Brendan Behan wrote this when he was a Republican prisoner in Mountjoy gaol, which is near the Banks of the Royal Canal. Horses used to pull the barges along the canal before steam. They had a bell hanging from their necks to let people know their was a barge coming. I live quite close to the Royal Canal where you are more likely to see holiday barges nowadays.
I was listening to the Punch Brothers on my speaker while I was doing some yardwork. My 89 year old dad who was born in Arkansas came and stood by me, listening to a few of these tracks with me, and he said, "Now this is REALLY good music." I absolutely agree with him. Punch Brothers, you have your newest fan today, my dad!
The "Auld Triangle" written by Brendan Behan during his incarceration for the murder of two Garda Síochána in Mountjoy Jail. The triangle was the metal triangle that was beaten by the screws (wardens) every morning to waken the inmates in Mountjoy Prison, it's still there. The song is the reflection of a fictionalized IRA man on the last day of his life when he is going to be hanged. Behan wrote it about himself in memory of the Easter Rising in 1916 ... The Royal Canal was built to carry freight by barge from Longford to Dublin.
@@raaaaaaaaaager In his defense, every time the Dubliners sang it they stated themselves that it was written be Behan. But thanks for the heads up they were obviously wrong. " Subject: RE: The Ould Triangle From: GUEST,Tom Neary Date: 21 Jul 12 - 08:11 PM As a matter of clarification to the debate of who wrote The Auld Triangle, I can confirm that it was indeed Dicky Shannon who penned the song for Behan. Brendan and Dicky were very close pals, aswell as drinking mates. The song refers to the joy (Mountjoy) jail in Dublin. It was very common in those days for men to get themselves locked up, as it would guarantee bed and board for a few nights. Strange I know, but that's wha poverty does I suppose? I have many stories of their escapades together, including a visit they made to the BBC, in which Brendan promised to record a series of short stories. This was of course dependant on him being paid up front for his services. Sadly he never recorded the stories, but was given a small retainer, so the drink flowed for a while. Brendan always credited Dicky for the song because they were great pals, however, I can verify that Dicky never received a penny in royalties and neither did his family, but Brendan did give Dicky's eldest son Michael (Mickser) Shannon the boat fare to come to England in 1955. A gesture that Mickser has never forgotten. I know this to be true because I am Dicky's grandson, and he would relate his story to keep us entertained as kids. Having read Sullivans book on Behan ican see why they were such good friends. They appear to have had very similar outlooks to life."
As a Born and Bred Irish man, I can safely say "You Guys" done excepionally well, on a heartfelt and true Irish classic.. I need say no more..only THANK YOU
As an Irishman I've been listening to this song since the cradle and I must admit this take on it has opened up a whole new dimension for me! For such a simple song its so layered and thought provoking! So go poetry, go 'The Punch Brothers', and go Ireland! Great stuff ;-)
If some of you want to hear only the "authentic" original, go put that recording on an infinite loop and you will never have to hear another interpretation. I say "to hell with that". This is an homage to great music done incredibly well by fantastic musicians who have taken the time and effort to honor a great tradition.
For those of you who are offended by The Punch Brother's rendition of this song - it was originally written by Brendan Behan. If you listen to his version, the tempo is much different, and the lyrics are not the same. In fact, the song has been recorded many times by many different artists. If you take the time to listen to some of the other versions, you will notice that there are several different versions - and in fact the phrase "humpy gussy" is not even used in many of them. The version sung by The Punch Brothers seems to be modeled most closely on the version sung by The Pogues, and I haven't seen any criticism of their interpretation.
As a proud immigrant Irishman having sung this in many formats and love the tune, hats off to the lads there. It was great!!! Anything Chris Thile does is golden anyway so fair play to all!!!
a pal of mine almost drowned in it, some hopeless egit thought he was his son and he jumped in after him ,but couldnt swim, almost got both of them killed trying to float on him.
Had never heard this song until this morning. It struck as something worth looking into. The version I heard earlier today was Damien Dempsey. This is a helluva song. And once I learn what it's about, oh, how important it is.
I love this song from Brendan thanks to all the other artists including Bob on the Basement Tapes who give it a lash as well as The Punchies they are as irish as the rest of us welcome over here any time
Showtime is repeating the Movie tribute "Another Day Another Time" from which Marcus Mumford , Oscar Isacc, Punch bros, etc these clips were taken from Tonight Thursday Jan 16 @ 7:00 E - Brilliant!
I am going to correct myself. I believe that Punch Brothers version is more like the version sung by The High Kings. Either way, The Punch Brothers do a great rendition.
I heard this song in the movie Inside Llewyn Davis and the guys that sang it looked funny in those sweaters. But this song is actually quite beautiful.
very good but a bit too polished, The song almost has a free metre and the rhythm isn't always exactly defined. Incredibly hard to capture but still a great effort.
the gods spoke on this day when the tallahassi bunch crunched and punched. and to think it was all one big hunch. as an Irish man and a Dubliner and someone who sings this song everyday I have to say this is fantastic. Luke Kelly would be happy.
"Irish man and a Dubliner". Which one is it?
@@reredrumuoy What do you think? Asking such an obvious question is stupid.

It simply does not get any better than this
A miraculous performance
The only version I've ever seen that comes in any way close to the Dubliners. Chris Thile is some lad.
an amazing performance, hard to get it out of my head.
I've been singing this song for 45 years, but never as well as this version!
This is a classic song and one I play over and over. Actually heard some old boys in Kinsale at Dalton's Pub sing this song. Well Done.
I fell into the Royal canal when I was a young lad.
a pal of mine almost drowned in it, some hopeless egit thought he was his son and he jumped in after him ,but couldnt swim, almost got both of them killed trying to float on him.
Been watching Marcus Mumford all the time. Definitely a superb performance
I absolutely LOVE this song. It's so beautiful, and the polyphony makes it all the better. Every time I hear it, I get shivers down my spine. SO good!
Good Job Much Respect from Ireland
