- This is a review of the Reolink RLC-511 5 megapixel camera with a 4x optical zoom. It records in Super HD 2560 x 1920. The camera is well built and the picture, whilst not as good as I was expecting, is still better than all of my other security cameras. The client software for Windows 10 is really very good.

Man, this was a great review. Thanks!! Made me decide go for this camera.
Great video review! Just purchased myself a Reolink E1 Pro, can't wait to test it out!
:-)
The best review of anything I've seen yet, well done! Most useful demo of software. I'll probably buy. Thanks
Thank you. :-)
Great review, made my mind up to purchase the Reolink RLC-511. Thanks
I have two of these cameras now. :-)
Great review thank you!
Cheers Liran. :-)
Excellent presentation and beautiful property you have.
Thank you. Yes, we are very lucky! :-)
Thank you for this video"""
You are welcome. :-)
Very nice, well made review
Thank you! :-)
Many thanks, excellent review, clear and to the point with no waffle:-)
Glad it was helpful! :-)
@@RussellPlatten Got the 511w yesterday and set it up today, very pleased. The 4x optical plus the digital produces a better image than the 10x old optical zoom camera that it replaced. Reolink putting out some good well priced equipment now. Thanks again for the review, it made a difference,
@@fxpeter22 Thank you for the feedback Peter! :-)
good review, well done
Glad it was helpful! :-)
Thanks Russell. Good informative video. Looking to use these to replace a Netgear Arlo implementation. :)
I really like this camera Chris and the software is great. :-)
Got three arriving today with a small PoE switch. Will look at the software first and considering using BlueIris if the native software doesn't do what I need. Home and Office CCTV scenario.
I reckon you will find the software suitable for your needs. Please l et me know what you think to it all Chris. :-)
Hello,
i have a Reolink RLC-511 and i need a picture preview from the video clips (use sd card or FRITZ! Nas)
anyone know a software or anything i can do this? (i had a arlo before, i want the "same" overview ...)
thanks Russell, looking to buy one
It is a good camera. :-)
I have the floureon 18x zoom ptz dome
It’s amazing
18x zoom with PTZ is very useful! :-)
great video Russell, i thought that you would only be able to use these cameras with a Reolink NVR but from watching your video i think i could buy a router and several cameras and connect the router via ethernet to my PC and cut out the need for the NVR, would i be correct on this? Can you tell me where you got the flat Cat6 cables from, i'm in the UK too.
Thank you Nick. Yes, you can easily connect the camera to your PC and record the video. That is what I do with mine. You need a POE switch to power the camera using the ethernet cable and the POE switch needs to be connected to your router. I have added links to the bottom of the video for the cable I bought and the switch I use on the video. Shop around for both of these, you may not want to spend so much on the switch and there are a lot of different makes and models available. I chose Netgear because it is good quality gear. There will probably be cheaper flat cables available too. If you use a flat cable, you will need to try and waterproof the connection at the camera to prevent water ingress. I think it is a very good camera. :-)
Hi Russel, One more question. You mentioned that you were running a flat Cat 6 cable in order to run through the windows without drilling holes. I heard somewhere that one could run the flat cable say from the front of a house to the rear, along the roofline with double-sided mounting tape. Granted it would have to be very strong and sticky tape I'm sure. How did you handle mounting the cable on the outside of your house? Again thank you for this video. Very informative. I find myself referring to it from time to time for ideas.
I do not use this camera as a security camera so it is not permanently mounted to my house. I use a homemade tripod and move the camera around. Flat cables are much easier to tuck away if you do run them around the house. Inside they can be placed under the carpet and even under the skirting boards if there is a sufficient gap. Outside they can be stuck to the rear of the guttering or tucked under/behind woodwork with a little effort. As for tape, I am not sure I would go down that route. I would probably use self adhesive cable clips every metre or so. :-)
Russel, excellent review. Answered most of my questions. Very easy to understand. Reolink has a lot of cameras s it's hard to make a decision. I'm looking to replace my Logitech system which died. Looking for 2 POE Cameras for outside and 2 Cameras for the inside. Probably wireless because I want the ability to move them from room to room when I want. If you have any ideas let me know. They have several great package deals. Anyway, great review.
I am very impressed with the camera and software. I plaid extra for the optical zoom and for security this may not be a necessity. POE is a joy for external cameras the only problem is getting the cable outside. I made my own cables for other cameras it is not too difficult to fit the connectors. I think wireless cameras should be fine inside, so long as they are reasonably near the router. I would certainty buy Reolink again. :-)
@@RussellPlatten Thank you so much for your reply and advise.
:-)
Does it zoom out far enough for above my front door, to see peoples faces when they knock?
It will be fine if you mount it next to your door, but it is a bit on the large side Gareth and there is no need for the zoom. I would go for the Reolink RLC-410 it is a good camera and quite a bit smaller than this one. :-)
Hi buddy can you confirm if it has a built in mic to record audio?
Got the answer from your video. Thanx 👍
:-)
Did your cat 6 cable work with the included waterproof boot such that you didn't need to cut the end and reattach it?
I have had issues with flat and round cables and I think it is because they are completely out in the open with no cover whatsoever. If you mount the cameras under an overhang and have the cable hanging down to prevent water ingress the set up should be fine. Most of my cameras are connected with flat cables in various locations, mainly out in the garden and driveway. If water gets into the fitting it will corrode the small brass coloured connections as these are not brass as I have discovered. :-)
@@RussellPlatten I guess what I meant was...there were multiple reviews on amazon saying that the waterproof gland included won't fit over the included (or any normal) ethernet cord with a boot. I was just curious if cutting the end off and reattaching it back to the cable once the gland is on...if that was necessary as the reviewers stated of if your ethernet cable was able to slide thru the gland easily without modification.
@@philkingmke Sorry Phil, I had no real issues getting the fitting through the back of the waterproof connector. Getting the cable back out can be a little fiddly, but it is manageable. :-)
@@philkingmke I think the issue is there if the cable has a shroud over the connector. If it is just the RJ45 fitting without a plastic shroud/cover, it goes through the back of the waterproof cover fairly easily. :-)
@@RussellPlatten you are the man indeed. Thank you!
is it possible to record footage directly from RLC-511W to computer without cloud or memorycard/NVR?
Yes, the client software will record directly to your hard drive. The only issue I found was Windows automatic updates shutting my PC down and stopping it. Other than that it works really well. :-)
@@RussellPlatten How does it get recorded to a computer? I assume you connect the camera to the PC?
@@rmatthews9545 The camera and PC need to be connected to your home network. There is no need to connect the camera directly to your PC. Once the camera is up and running the client software will find the camera on your network. I cover the procedure on the video. :-)
@@RussellPlatten thanks
Nice review. 5mp cameras are 4:3 so if you want a high res in 16:9, you will need to purchase a 4k camera. 😋
