Our verdict of the Reolink RLC-511 PoE Security Cam: 9/10 - The RLC-511 offers fantastic image quality, ease of installation, and rock solid desktop software that can grow into an extensive security system, at an affordable price.
Thanks for the nice review. so this means i can connect the camera directly to my router and no need for nvr device. so the desktop app allows me to setup and see all the cameras ? also it can be accessible from the desktop outside the home network or only on Mobile app ?
Really best quality recording & very useful to identify the objects in the frame. 👌🏼
Nice & complete review as always. 👍🏼
Please do a review of the
RLC811A 👍. Its it good. No good is it better than this model ?
It looks like you were able to slide that ethernet cord right through the waterproof connector. Is that accurate or did it require you to cut the ethernet cord jack, fish it through and then connect a new crimp? It would be so nice to be able to use a current cord without having to cut it. Thanks!
Yes, you can slide it through. Or rather, the waterproof connector is built around the cable, it has a rubber piece with a slit on one side.
@@MakeUseOf Perfect! They mustve updated the design (likely just the slit in the grommet) cuz some of the negative stuff on the Amazon reviews is that you have to cut the end off to get it to work. I have a crimp tool but its so annoying to have to cut a brand new cord just to get something to work right. THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK!
This particular model does have audio (MIC) support
YES
I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAMERA REALLY GOOD AND CLEAR PICTURE AND RECORDING
Does it work through the app?
Thank you for the video. Does the app allow you to chose an activity zone or are you notified if there is motion anywhere in view?
The desktop app allows you to set the area; the mobile app does not. I'm not sure why that feature isn't on mobile too.
Can you record on a desktop hard drive?
Can I connect this through my iLink extender for PoE or do I have to hardwire direct to my main broadband hub?
Love the new Reolink review. Will you please review the RLC-423 and compare it to the RLC-511?
Oooh, that does look nice, I'll see what they can do though our schedule is pretty full at the moment, too many awesome gadgets....
The camera give a ghosting view and litlle blury squares by moving objects. (cam is connected with a LAN cable to a PoE switch. Switch is connected tot a router (provider)
Hmm, ours is still going strong and looking superb. What device are you watching the footage on? Mobile? Try the desktop app for a better live view, and don't use Wi-Fi.
Thanks for the review, do you know if those cameras do work with the QNAP Surveillance Station ? Thx
It'll definitely have basic ONVIF support, though beyond that I'm not sure. QNAP does list it as supported, but their other information on the features it has (like audio in) are wrong, so not entirely sure if it's to be trusted: www.qnap.com/en/compatibility-qvr-pro?brand=Reolink
Hi, thanks for the video, do you know if reolink does make a camera with talk back capabilities? Also whether a talk back capable camera could be used with the reolink software?
Thanks
Yes, and yes. Here's one we reviewed that would be suitable for outdoors: www.makeuseof.com/tag/reolink-argus-pro/
Does it work through the app?
Yes!
Love the video camera, thanks. Need a camera for our house, we're in a bad area close to town, please !!
Do you have to mess with port forwarding or does Reolink NDVR handle setup so you can stream to your phone? Thanks for your help.
I've never had to mess with port forwarding, but that's mostly due to uPnP that's been on routers for years and not related to Reolink. Any competent router should have uPnP built-in, but some people disable it...
Could I power this via Google whole home wifi??
No, you'd need a PoE capable wired switch. Google Home Wi-Fi doesn't do that.
@@MakeUseOf thanks
Hi, thank you for the video!
I wonder If I could use the camera and its software to use it for a webcam. Meaning store a snapshot every hour or so on ftp or if not possible on local disc...
Would you consider that as possible?
Assuming you have a working FTP server, yes, you can schedule it to automatically upload a picture only every X seconds. I only see this option to set it up on the desktop software side though, not from the mobile client. Also I don't see any settings for filenames, so it's probably auto generated with the timestamp.
How good is the Reolink motion detection at removing false positives?
There's a sensitivity setting, but I get some false positives from rain. Best it to install it slightly under cover rather than completely in the open as I did in this video. Under a porch, or eaves of a garage or something.
One thing puzzles me: how does the mobile app connect to your camera when you're on a different wifi network?
Yes, you can remote view outside of your home.
@@MakeUseOf Yes, but how can it connect through the Internet to your router and to the camera: how does it know where to find your router? Maybe that's a technical question I should ask Realonk!
A different point: I have a RLC-422W but I find both the PC program and the iPhone app very flakey: the programme crashes frequently and the app stops displaying the timeline of recordings.
@@zeno2712 Interesting. The app is rock solid for me, I run it constantly on Mac, admittedly not PC and mobile is just to check in occasionally. As for technicalities of how it connects; your device is registered with Reolink, and uPnP negotiates an open port on your router, so when you request the feed, Reolink's server tells your phone where it's located, and you connect.
@@MakeUseOf Ah. Thanks for the explanation.
@@zeno2712 I have the same issue on Windows, loss of picture regularly. On Mac the clear playback freezes all the time. Going to try with a different camera, maybe better.
4:50 I also have a Mac with the Reolink app installed via the App Store, but I don’t now how to have the small window in the corner of the screen that you are talking about. However that seems like a really nice feature so can you please explain how you did this?
Kind regards
Sorry for the confusion, I didn't mean as some special feature - I just maximise the video window, allow it to cycle if I need, and make the app window small.
Ow okay, I understand. No problem
Can this device be used without a nvr? And the sdcard as storage? With internet support?
Yes, it doesn't record to an NVR. Storage on-device. You just need PoE to power it, or get an injector.
I know it has optical zoom but does it also allow for digital zoom on playback? Thanks again!
No. They say to caught plates you have to zoom in at the area where you wants plates to be caught. So you wont be seeing the surrounding area only the zoomed in portion.
Are the notifications strong enough to wake you from sleep if it detects activity?
That depends on how your phone is set up, but generall, no.
@@MakeUseOf Thx. Yeah this is my concern. There is no real way to actually monitor your home unless you are awake all night. Do you think you could set it up on a tablet with the volume set to high? and/or use bluetooth speakers?
@@kstevenson3504 buy a motion sensor that picks them up and leave the beeper by bed at night is what I do
Is it possible to disable autofocus in Reolink Client? That was the only manual focus control?
On desktop at least, it automatically focusses if you change zoom level, but you can then override the focus with the manual focus control. There's no explicit "disable autofocus all the time" setting.
Looks like the screws are standard screws. I was hoping that it would require a wrench of sorts so that the camera isn't as easy to steal with a regular screw driver.
Yeh, you'll want to put these sort of things out of reach.
@@MakeUseOf Or be like me, a night owl, with constant feeds.. anyone comes near to steal my cams, I make them walk funny...
Just have this camera I it's fantastic so glad I bought this
Oh, i was about to buy this camera until i noticed you saying there is NO MICROPHONE in this RLC-511 camera so it can not record sound...... :( Man this is a serious no buy from me as i want to record sound as well.
Also they should replace the cheap 850nm IR LED's (visibly red glow) with 940nm IR LED's (undetectable for humans). Or add both 850nm and 940nm to let the user choose between high power and low power IR.
you can use an IR Flood and cover or disable the existing IR in night mode .
This is helpful if you have local insects that are attracted to IR, and boosts visual range of the camera at night.
There is!! There’s another review of a guy who uses one for watching wildlife and shows microphone quality. I even messaged Reolink and had it confirmed it does have one. This review is wrong and nearly had me dismiss this camera.
@@robintodd3901 I see now. I think this is a new batch of 511's that has audio build-in because in that past it was not mentioned on their website nor on their Amazon listings. The same reason i did not buy the 422 (no audio). I ended up buying 410 and 420. Similar specs but no zoom (but with audio).
soundshout Yes can confirm 100% they do now sir now I’m an owner of the 511 👍
@@robintodd3901 I hope Reolink will update their firmware to support h.265 for all cameras. Currently they use h.264. With h.265 codec firmware the filesize of video will be 50% smaller than h.264 but quality is as good as h.264 codec. So you can record more days of video.
Hello, when I want play a video, there is "start playback" but it's impossible to play the video... Can you help me please ? (forgive me for my english)
You mean in the mobile app, the video doesn't load, it just keeps spinning? Have you tried taking the SD card and viewing directly? Seems like it might be a network issue, or perhaps the card/file is corrupted. Also, have a go on desktop, see if it works there.
@@MakeUseOf Hello, many thanks for your answer, but It's OK now : I reset the camera and the application reolink, and I can download my videos. Thank you. (apologyse for my English)
Do you know model RLC-511W has audio recording?
No, it's just a wireless version of this model.
@@MakeUseOf it has sound recording....
Muting is better than bleeping.
;)
@@MakeUseOf alexfu-
what are you saying at 7:03? "the lack of ...." what? It's being beeped by RUclips? I doubt you are saying obscenities
"Alexa", we didn't want to trigger everyone's voice assistants ;)
@@MakeUseOf LOL I thought it was because you secretly detest it and didn't want to even speak its name on video...
Has anyone compare the picture quality only between 511 and 4k ? Which is better
A I i have tried both 4k reads number. Plates better the problem is the zoom in 511 is fixed position so most times when zooming in you don’t get the object as its a fix camera
A I i am getting the 4k reolink ai no false motion detection it capture human and car only cant wait its out in November
A I what do you have now
A I they are better than reolink tho for money reolink are fine i want the human and car detection thats very important i hate false alerts
A I hopefully the new 4k ai reolink are good
Great camera but compared to the 411 it's much bigger.
Why are beeps when you say Alexa? Hear it at 7:03
So he doesn't trigger Alexa in viewer's homes?
Because he's worried about the blue haired snowflakes melting down in the comments section for triggering their Echo devices.
It was purely selfish, I have an Echo Dot in my office and the damn thing kept triggering while I was editing! ;)
Sold me. Will buy the set up plus the DVD box that monitors up to 16 cameras. Question. Can to buy a deafening Sound system to turn on and off with the phone. So the thieves bug out and I call the cops...
Hmm, these Wi-Fi models include a siren: support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/360004215573-Audio-Alarm-siren- - I'm sure their hardware NVRs also have a connection for an external siren, but I can't find the documentation for it now, so I'd suggest reaching out to Reolink to enquire about that...
I have 4 Reolink cameras and they are shit. Very good quality WHEN they work but mine constantly disconnect and will only re-connect by removing from the house and having to connect via Ethernet. The firmware will also not update on any of the cameras. Reolink customer support is extremely slow and pretty much useless. They even offered me 8% discount on 2 of my cameras for the issue I am facing. I would rather the cameras actually properly work than have a discount.
I do NOT recommend Reolink at all.
Hmm, sorry to hear that Nick. I've got four cameras around the place too, and not once have they disconnected. It's more likely the fault of your router. I used to have horrendous Wi-Fi everywhere until I upgraded to a UniFi system with multiple access points.
@@MakeUseOf The router is fine and we have a very strong internet connection. Reolink told me to update the firmware which I have tried on every camera multiple times but it always fails.
🌏🤠✌
Did they update since your review? I was about to purchase and noticed you said no mic but on their site they say built in mic. reolink.com/product/rlc-511/#specifications
Looks like I've made a glaring error there, or perhaps its disabled by default. I've just checked again, and it does indeed transmit audio. Will update the review now!
There IS a microphone!!!
Yeh, article and description were corrected.
Wow amazing
