- Reolink contacted me and asked if I would be interested in testing a new 12MP 4K CCTV camera before it went on sale. I was very keen to get my hands on this camera, expecting it to be very good and it did not let me down! It is a brilliant CCTV camera with good clear 4K resolution and is considerably better than the already very good 5MP cameras produced by Reolink. The camera will not work at 12MP with all NVR's here is a link to an article that specifies which NVR's will produce the best footage: support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/...

Thank you! :-)
Quite an impressive camera. Thanks for sharing this. Cheers!
Thank you Dwayne! :-)
Fantastic video and blessed to be surrounded by amazing wildlife 👏👏👏
Thank you Carl. We never get tired of seeing the deer in our garden! :-)
Excellent review between both cameras.
Thank you! :-)
Thanks Russell for the review
Cheers Ray! :-)
great review thanks russell ;)
Thank you! :-)
Nice Test Review Russell...Looks good...Hope your well mate :-)
Thanks Russ. All Ok here. I hope the same goes for you bud! :-)
good review thanks
Cheers Lee. :-)
Thanks Russell. Good video. Just seeing when the 12mp cameras and nvr are available.
:-)
Nice job. Be safe, from Boston MA
Thanks, you too Bill! :-)
thanks for the video! Are there any "fisheye" effect with this model?
Not enough to cause any issues, it is very slight. :-)
What is the maximum distance that a license plate can be captured at day / and night (feet or meters) and be good enough to read the plate numbers?
Great vid 👍
:-)
Thanks Russell, I've just ordered 2 x of these cameras from Reolink site, plus I have ordered 2 x 820A, thanks to your good video. I don't know how long they will take to be delivered though because I've never dealt with Reolink directly.
Glad I could help Rob! :-)
Thank you for the video I have had one question. did you set up something in the configuration to have such a perfect video height \width ratio?
Because when I saw the 12 MB frame area I was expecting something more square and not like that nice 16x 9 that kind of look as I see here.
thank you
I never touched the NVR, it just displays the image in a 16:9 ratio. The PC client software also shows the image in 16:9. :-)
Thanks for an excellent video, you really have shown the capabilities of the camera. This has just caused me a problem however, as I am specing a systems and have been comparing Reolink with HIKVision. I've been leaning toward HIKVision (although more expensive) as they seem to have better functionality especially in the areas of line crossing, intrusion detection, person/vehicle recognition and face capture. But I understand that this camera, and the RLC820A. now have person/vehicle detection so I'll try and find video that demonstrates this with the new ReoLink cameras before making a final decision. Thanks again, though you have made my job more difficult!
I could not show the new functions because my reolink NVR is not compatible with these features. :-)
@@RussellPlattenYes! Sorry you did say. Let's hope someone or even Reolink themselves puts out something that demonstrates the capability of these new models
Don't even think about Reolink. They have way too many issues. Unless you want to be a permanent alpha-tester. HiKVision is superior absolutely in everything.
@@D9ID9I In the end I did go for Hikvision and have not been dissappointed though the very fact they are so feature rich means its a steep learning curve to get the system set up in the way you want. But definitely worth it!
Great video! About how far can you reliably read the plates on the 12mp camera? Have you tried the camera with minimal lights and the nightvision off?
Too many variables to give a distance, but the footage is good. With no IR LED's and minimal light the image is very grainy, but better than you would expect. :-)
Very good review and very beautiful place 02:55
Thank you very much! :-)
Just bought 7 of these and 4 of the 4k version mainly for people/car filter , to replace my c2 pro's couldn't deal with all the false alerts with light changes, clouds moving, rain, snow, spiders webs, bugs, etc. These do have the exposer adjustment slider so you can tune the motion blur at low light?
Unfortunately, my NVR does not support the People/Car function. I too have hundreds of motion detect instances. I do not know what you mean by motion blur at low light. You can adjust the exposure setting. It has an Anti-Smearing option in the options which may be what you are interested in. You can manually adjust the exposure settings too. You should ask customer service if this has not answered your question Jeff. :-)
Thanks for the review, do you know what systems the camera works on please, looking to upgrade from my ankke system in a few months
It will only work on reolink NVR's or on the reolink client software and app. :-)
@@RussellPlatten Hi mate Can you tell if the camera will work with RLK8-800D4/B4 ?
Here is a link to the information Dean. support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/900003483406-Which-Version-Model-NVR-recorder-Works-with-RLC-1220A-RLC-1210A :-)
any idea when i can actually order these from their website? i want to get the 16ch NVR tho ....
Sorry for the late reply Jed. I have been in touch with Reolink. Apparently the cameras are in transit and there are delays due to Covid. :-)
Hello Sir, can i connect more that one of this cameras to the router or just one at the time? This is a gift for my father that lives abroad and he needs cameras on his vacation house. i want to see if he will like them before i get the NVR system
Yes, you can connect several cameras to the router and view them on the PC Client software. Remember that these cameras are POE and need an POE network switch if you want to run them via the Ethernet cable without a separate power supply. I used Netgear BGS308P switch before I purchased the NVR. I used to record the video from several Reolink cameras directly to my PC hard drive using the client software. Obviously, you need to keep the PC running and have a big enough HDD. :-)
Thanks for the review, By the way, what is the min requirement of internet bandwidth for 12 MP CCTV?
Can this 12 MP CCTV be used without NVR.. just directly to the phone using app?
First of all, I am not sure what the bandwidth is Ed. You can access the camera with the app or client software and select the video quality for viewing. :-)
@@RussellPlatten thanks anyway Russell..
Do you experience lagging using the 5MP, 8 MP, 12 MP Reolink camera.
I mean , the movement you see on the live video is late (falling out of sync) .
If you have experienced this, how did you fix this issue..
It has the A designation does that mean it has the new AI for car/human motion detection? How well does it work? What about optical zoom? Frame rate? SD card?
It does support AI detection, but only with certain NVR models - there is a link in the description. My NVR does not support it. There is no optical zoom. 4K 20 fps. It does take a Micro SD card. I used this for the time-lapse video. :-)
Thanks for the great review. I have an 823A and was looking for a nice stationary camera to go with it, this looks ideal. Unfortunately it looks like they are currently unavailable, I guess I'll have to decide whether to wait or maybe go for the 820 or 822.
It is listed as discontinued on the website Daniel, the 820 looks like it is virtually the same. The zoom feature on the 822 will only be useful if you need to mount the camera at a distance. :-)
@@RussellPlatten yeah I contacted them. Looks like all the 12mp cameras are discontinued only the 8mp ones left. Chip shortage maybe?
do you know what NVR model supports the reolink RLC 822A?
The RLC-822A camera has ONVIF protocol so can be used with a lot of equipment. This link gives a little more information about the Person/Vehicle detection and NVR models: support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/900002812986-Which-Cameras-NVRs-Support-Smart-Person-Vehicle-Detection
Hi Russell , fantastic review was really impressed . I was thinking of getting the Reolink 4K 8meg cameras and NVR , what do you think about these? At the moment I have 3 Reloink WiFi Lumas cameras which are pretty good but want to upgrade with NVR capability.
I have one of the 8MP cameras and it is a good camera Andy. If you get a NVR your WiFi cameras can be connected to it also. I certainly do not regret buying my NVR or 8MP camera. I have purchased a lot of my Reolink equipment myself. I do like it when they give me cameras to review though! :-)
@@RussellPlatten Hi Russell , thanks for the recommendation I have been looking at reolink for a while now and also viewed quite a lot of your reviews and others but you seem to be more genuine with your reviews. Just a quick question, now that we are out of the European Union will there be a customs charge on anything bought from Reolink ?
@@middone I think they ship directly from the UK Andy. I usually buy from Amazon UK. If you look at this web page it would appear European orders ship from UK or Germany. support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003623033-How-Long-is-the-Delivery-Time
I think you can get a discount from Reolink direct if you use the code: ytb5offruss
I am not sure if it works and it is only 5% off, but it is better than nothing if you decide to order from their website. :-)
Why in your video does it look like it has a wide field of view as well as a widescreen aspect ration compared to other videos that show square aspect ratio?
I have the aspect ratio set to 16:9, not 4:3, so the image is stretched to fill the screen. I prefer it that way. :-)
Hi Russel, does this work with a Synology DS220J NAS with the built in software Synology Surveillance Station?
Search for: "How to Add Reolink Cameras to Synology Surveillance Station"
The information is all on there. :-)
Any idea if this would work with a synology station?
I am not sure Christian. Contact Reolink support, they will be able to tell you. :-)
Good review thank you, which retailers will have them in stock
It is listed on the Reolink site, but not on sale just yet. Other retailers will be getting deliveries over the next few days/weeks. Reolink said that around 250 had been shipped to suppliers before I finished the video. As soon as I see it on Amazon I will add a link to the video description Rob. :-)
@@RussellPlatten Thanks Russell and take care,
Thanks Russell very useful review. Dont suppose you could comment on the visibility of number plates when going past at a higher speed ? Keep getting people crashing into our cars outside and am looking to capture evidence. Thanks again, hope all is well
The set up I have is not realistic as the camera is actually mounted right next to my driveway. I think that the camera would cope easily with number plates during the day at any normal speed. Also at night, so long as the cars lights are not pointing directly at the camera and the angle of the camera to the car is such that the IR lights are not reflecting back towards the lens. I am sorry that I cannot be more helpful. :-)
What would you recommend more this 12mp or the ptz reolink that you reviewed as far as id be wanting to record my boat at night which is about 100 feet away in the water. basically which would be better for night vision about 100 feet away clarity and quality
The 12MP is a better picture but the camera is static and has no optical zoom. The PTZ is a good picture and can be moved, zoomed in etc.. If you can get the 12MP camera close enough to the boat for the resolution of the camera to be an advantage (filling the screen) and do not need the pan and tilt go for the 12MP. The PTZ is much more versatile and zoomed in it will show more detail then the 12MP camera if the 12MP camera is not close enough. I hope this helps! :-)
@@RussellPlatten Excellent the closer i can zoom in the camera while watching the front door the better as per i wont really be panning or tilting the better night vision and zoom sounds like a better deal to me although its a little bit more expensive
Hi,
Which nvr system did you use to go with theses cameras ? Since reolink doesn't have nvr that goes with 12mp cameras.
I used my Reolink NVR. It is an older version and the camera will work on it, but the person and vehicle detection system will not. :-)
Reolink do have NVRs that work with this camera. support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/900003483406-Which-Version-Model-NVR-recorder-Works-with-RLC-1220A-RLC-1210A
I just bought the 8mp from Amazon. I think I will return it and wait for this 12mp to come out! Awesome review!! Thanks
:-)
@@RussellPlatten i went to the link you have in description and I seen the cameras and latest dvr works with Alexa!!
they are available now on Reolink site £98.99 each
russel what are you most happy of and using today in home ???
Sorry Kjeld, I do not know what you mean. If you are talking about CCTV, you can tell me what you want to do and I will tell you if I have any experience or opinions on set up and equipment. I am using all of the Reolink cameras I have reviewed. This camera recently had its RJ45 port chewed off by a squirrel and I have just repaired it! LOL
So, this would not work at full 12mp with Blue Iris?
I am not sure Lee. :-)
I wonder what happened with the new release of this camera, which I just noticed today (September 17th 2021). I just received my 8mp version today and noticed now they have the 12mp version that will be out soon..... again.
I know, it is all very strange. I suspect that Reolink are having difficulties getting hold of some of the components. I was supposed to be reviewing a different camera a month or so ago and they had to postpone due to supply issues. :-)
@@RussellPlatten damn damn damn! Well I hooked up 4 rlc822a cameras and Soo far Soo good. I like them. Next purchase I think I'll get the rlc-823a ptz camera. Looks awesome.
@@MrFreeze79 The 823a certainly does look awesome! :-)
You have to compare 12MP vs 8MP! Comparing with 5MP is NOT fair
When will the product be available?
They are available now. :-)
Reolink site says discontinued will they go on sale
They are in transit according to Reolink, but there have been delays due to Covid. :-)
@@RussellPlatten Great stuff can't wait keep us up to date great reviews
Have you any idea of a price point? I’d like to be ready when it comes out.
reolink.com/product/rlc-1220a
It is retailing at £98.99 in the UK.
Thanks Dan. After thoroughly watching your video, twice! I was sold. I found them for sale via their website. I purchased 5, RLC-1220’s and one 8 channel box. Also, I found an online coupon saving me 10% @ coupon follow.com
Could you tell me how much wire will come with them? I’m gonna need a lot of wire.
You will need to purchase ethernet cables. The cameras come with a very short cable to use for set up. :-)
Thank you Dan. :-)
Am I able to use two monitors at home?
I can see how much of a difference between the two
:-)
Russell, when this 12MP camera will come to the market?
Hopefully soon Roger! :-)
What kind of price are we looking at?
Not sure, they are still deciding on the price. :-)
@@RussellPlatten Thanks!
£98.99 each and they are available now on Reolink site
The most important issue is missing. No cloud usage possible once you are on holiday... this is a no-go (in Europe not available or only with the additional NVR). Sorry...
You can also use a NAS. :-)
Dang. Still waiting on it. "out of stock" on their website
I think that there is a shortage of some processing chips that has led to a suppy issue for certain products. :-)
So I got mine. Opened the NVR and one camera. HDMI to my 4K TV. Plugged it all in. Image quality is comparable to “Christmas 1995” VHS tape🤷🏻♂️ Frame rate all the way up. Resolution all the way. Everything all the way. And I have really trashy image. Then I read a possible firmware update. I never planned on EVER watching anything on my computer. This is for home protection. If something comes in a zone that I already have setup. I get a chime in my house.. I rush to the dedicated tv and see what’s what. This image is trash. What could possibly be wrong? I’m looking for updates but this is their newest product??? Thoughts on this?
Have you removed the protective cover from the lens? :-)
It had a blue style protective tape. So, yes.
@@dathonlawler81 Have you set the NVR output to 4K. Main menu, Display, Output tab, Resolution - 3840*2160?
@@RussellPlatten I’ve done that also
@@dathonlawler81 Try - main menu/recording/encode Select the camera and ensure Main Stream is indicated/selected in the first Column. Resolution 3840*2160 My Frame rate is set at 20 and Max Bitrate 8192.
bad, the 1220 a is not available in Germany.
That is a shame! :-)
Yea the only downfall is my boat is about 100 ft away being im on a 3rd floor condominium so I'm assuming ptz would be my best bet?
Yes, sounds like the PTZ would be the best choice Frank! :-)
Here we are 10 months later and still not on the market.
I think that they are having problems with suppliers. :-)
I thought 4K was 8MP, what have they done with the extra 4MP 😂
It is a larger image. :-)
aspect ratio KILLS IT. Looks like they killed it/ discontinued it. Sensor was not very good and the aspect ratio killed demand.
:-)
£98.99 each
:-)
Discontinued now.
:-)
too bad this camera is unusable on NVRs that are 6 months old
The camera is usable, but the Person/Vehicle detection software does not work. :-)
That's a BS. Reolink cameras are terrible in absolutely everything. They have tons of bugs and issues in software. They are not compatible with BlueIris. They have totally awful low sense night mode. Affiliated guys reviews are very annoying.
