I’m exploring moving from Ring to something like this and found this very helpful. Especially, the adding a standalone poe switch that can connect to multiple cameras. That’s a great idea.
Reolink security system (NVR + IP Cameras) is a really high-value one but its compatibility to 3rd-party cameras are really poor. However it's still my favorite brand so far.
Great video! The only thing that pisses me off is that I've had the NVR and multiple Reolink wifi cameras for awhile now and never knew you had to connect directly to the NVR to actually connect the cameras to the NVR. I feel so stupid. I eventually gave up on connecting the two until now. Everything else uses the app they should just make it work on the app.
I think that is why they are moving to the new "hub" that is all app driven. Believe me, I have tried to setup things like PiKVM to access the NVR interface.
Thank you for this, one quick question and maybe I miss understood. POE cameras, no problem. But can the reolink go pt (cellular service data) camera connect with the NVR? Or will that only allow viewing through the reolink app?

Hello, tell me please, i got my RLN12W one week ago, and i noticed in the left side where should be a cooler is only the place for cooler, but no cooler inside, also this NVR don't have a power ON/OFF button. Can you tell me something about these 2 problems, please? As i noticed in your quick presentation video, you have the power button in the back ...but i didn't see if you have a cooler in left side, installed. Hello mate. Can I connect a RJ45 cable from my NVS8 POE port to a POE switch, but in the LAN port? The POE switch is TP-Link SG1005P. If I do that the POE Switch not crash?
Good question. I don't believe so. If you wanted a one stop location to look at live video and sensors, then you could add to Home Assistant (both NVRs). Now if you were using the ReoLink app, they would both appear in the same interface, so that would be pretty easy to switch between them.
You can have up to twelve cameras if four are connected to a switch on your network. The newer Reolink Duo 2 only takes one port on the NVR and has better joining of the two lenses than the original model.
@@vegaswayne247 None of their NVRs will allow more cameras than the number of channels. Reolink's 8 channel NVR will only allow you to set 8 channels regardless of how many cameras it finds on the network. There is no option for a 9th channel. The only way you could see more is if you connect a Duo 2, but that still just uses one channel.
Hi, I upgraded from a Reolink RLN16-410 to RLN36-32, but my cameras aren’t recognized by the new NVR, even though I’m using the correct IP addresses and passwords. Is my subnet the problem? Also, for my Reolink 810WA camera and Video Doorbell, I can see them on the old NVR when connected via PoE, but there’s no way to initialize the WiFi connection. In the app, there’s no option to configure WiFi, and when I connect the NVR to a screen, I can’t find any settings for WiFi either. Do you know where I can find this information or how to proceed?
As @billf6103 said, they do support masking. You can set up "zones" where it will only detect motion in that area. Or you can set up "privacy masks" that will back out certain areas of the picture for privacy.
I would assume so. I don't use the Alexa ecosystem. But if the EchoShows can view an RTSP stream, then you should be good. If not, I assume someone has a plug in for Home Assistant to do that.
As long as the doorbell supports RTSP or ONVIF it should work. But I would poke around some forums first and see I've heard a few vendors don't work well.
It looks like it is designed for that: support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/17208818114585-Getting-started-with-B500-D500/ I think those cams support ONVIF which is the default for ReoLink cameras (it is video and control).

Yes. As long as the NVR and camera are on the same subnet (same IP address range). In the video I give the example of the doorbell, it would be a similar install. Let me know if you have any questions.
Double check you have the latest by checking the downloads page: reolink.com/download-center/ Make sure you put in the right hardware version. I found the auto update isn't reliable.
Using the internal sd card shows you a thumbnail for each event. But upgrading to an nvr deteriorates the experience since you have alot less features.
Does the mobile app connect to the nvr or the camera? If you were to connect a 3rd party camera to the nvr, would it work in the mobile app? (including notifications)
You can connect to either. However, if you connect the cameras to the NVR via the built in switch, then you can only access the NVR. I believe if you add a 3rd party camera you will get basic notifications (motion) if the camera supports it.
Just to clarify, the 8 camera NVR wont support any additional cameras even if they are wifi cams or connected to a PoE switch? I just assumed it was a port limitation but if it's an actual hardware limitation I might go for the 16 camera model
I haven't tested it, but I believe it is a "channel" limit. So for example the Duo 1 camera treats each lens as a "channel". So it would consume 2 of the 8 slots. But most cameras, it is one camera per channel. So if you are wanting to connect more that 8, I would get the 16. Hope that clears things up!
Hello, i need your advice please..i got recent a RLN12W NVR from reolink, and i want to install to connect with my existing 2 Reolink's E1 Zoom camera and one Reolink video doorbell. When i start this NVR fiorst time for setup, should i leave that option to auto add my cameras in NVR? It's completely fine to leave the auto setup turned on. For any cameras that are not directly connected to the NVR (the PoE ports) you will need to go into the device and set them up manually. Let me know if you run into any more issues.

In theory yes, you could connect a touchscreen monitor to the HDMI and USB on the NVR. However, I have found that the mouse driver is weird. I am running PiKVM and I cannot use the mouse to control the NVR.
The only way your camera will require batteries is if you get a battery version that won't connect to an NVR, but if you get a Poe that stands for power over ethernet, the power comes from the ethernet cable and plugs directly into the nvr and from there into your camera so even if your internet is down as long as the power is on the device will still record and you can later access that video stored on the hdd.

For me the problem is i have another camera at balcony, Boavision, and the internet cable enter in one of 2 LAN ports, the other one is for laptop cable, and i am forced to take out the camera cable to connect the NVR. But now i understand and thank you, from what you told me, the NVR must be conected with internet cable and can give wi-fi to cameras. Thank you once again, you are great.
Ive the reolink RNL8 410 PoE with 4 x 12mp dome, but having problems on 4K settings, picture is ok, but sound is missing every 4 secs. I have the NVR wired by ethernet to my WiFi router 18 feet away….. Speed on reolink app only showing up to 6000 kbps on clear. & my internet speed averaging 70 Mbps, it’s better sound on fluent & works fine but wanted better quality pictures and audio , previously I did have tp link from NVR to WiFi but hard wired 2 weeks ago. Expecting better quality on higher resolution but sound is not working as it should. Is there any settings I can adjust to help ? Don’t have monitor linked to NVR atm as it’s in the loft, but can do so if need be. Thanks for any help
If you are using RLN8-410 with Reolink cameras. Can you still connect those same cameras into Frigate software as well, or does RLN "consume" the cameras fully? As Reolink mobile notifications are not as good as I'd hope, I'd wish to use Frigate only for the notifications.
@@ThisSmartHouse Yes, I have a ReoLink NVR where the cameras are on 172.N.N.N and Home Assistant/Frigate is on 192.168.1.N. Even though the ReoLink NVR/Cameras have person and animal detection, I don't think it is as good as Frigate.
No. If you want to be able to view the HDMI output at another location you will need either a balun or a HDMI extender. Those typically have to connect via a dedicated network connection. I did a video on an HDMI splitter / extender, but you just need the extender.

i have REOLINK RLK8-1200D4-A .when i connect to my router the NVR internet connection failed but i only connect to my modem the NVR internet connection ok, if i use ethernet switch connect the router and NVR together , only the router ok the NRV internet connect fail. Do you have the NVR set up for DHCP? Meaning that it pulls an IP address from your router? Because if it worked while connected to the switch, it should work when connected to the router. Also, make sure that the port you connected it to on the router is active (you will have to check the router settings).
By the way, i tried to connect a Boavision camera( wich is not a Reolink) to NVR Reolink, but no success, i guess the NVR know this camera is not a Reolink one. I tried both ways, onvif and ip, and still couldnt connect this camera.
Can you connect the NVR to two different monitors at the same time? For example, I'd like to connect mine to the TV in our bedroom via the HDMI output and to the computer in my office via the VGA port or by spitting the HDMI output. I want to be able to access the camera feeds from either location. Any problem with this?
Can i connect my laptop to a Reolink NVR instead a monitor? I use only laptop an i want to buy a NVR Reolink for my cameras, but i wish to know if i can connect and use my laptop as monitor when i want to see my cameras, to not spend money for nothing on this NVR.
If you want to be able to watch the cameras on your laptop you can use the reolink desktop application. You can also use the app on Android and Apple Amazing you need a monitor for is the web interface if you want to use that.

I asked this because i need the NVR to storage permanent and safer the videos, because i can't keep all the time client in laptop opened, i do this now already and i use an external HDD but this is not a permanent choice right now for me :( . Through your home network. You just need to connect them to your wifi, on the same network/subnet as the NVR's ethernet port. Then connect to the NVR (via keyboard and monitor) and add the IP address.

Avoid the 8 and 16 channel NVR due to the tiny drive and low storage capacity. (Just a few days at 24x7) Instead consider the NVR 36 which is lower cost and can store up to 48TB you supply the hard drive(s).

Can you see your POE cameras directly on a local client using the Reolink app? If so make sure your network is connected to the NVR’s LAN port. Your cameras should show on the NVR. If you can’t see your cameras on a local client you need to get that working first. I only use a doorbell WiFi camera and as I recall they should also appear. You will need to add them to the NVR channels.
Using the Reolink app? It works while inside of your house, but when outside it fails? You might have to enable UPNP on the NVR and on your internet router.
What issues are you having? If you have ever set up an old school DVR, it is much easier. I just wish they wouldn't require you to go to the NVR to set up cameras.
So, using an NVR, the camera can not record to an SD card if the camera has one? You said something about losing abilities. You still can use a PC? I like the ability to record to a PC into a folder as a backup. Just write a small command to have the PC auto run once a day to delete files after x many days. I just use the PC webserver to view them there as the camera can't retrieve them. To be clear, record to camera's SD card and a copy to the PC. Try the CX410 if you have street lighting. Mega pixels aren't everything.
Reolink? Not true at all. Their cameras support industry standards (RTSP / ONVIF). I am using my Reolink cameras in Frigate (open source NVR / object detection). Both directly connect and through the NVR.

The door bell had it and worked just fine, but the bullet cameras I had only connected with RTSP or ONVIF if the NVR was around, when I turned off the NVR they stopped working. So they only connected to the NVR then to HA or other NVRs through their own NVR. I had purchased the bundle with 8 cameras included.

Technically 12MP is more than 4K (4000x3000) but is considered a 4K resolution in IP cameras (4:3 vs 16:9). blog.swann.com/what-is-video-resolution-explained/
Can you add a camera via LAN? For example, I intend to have the NVR in my house connected to my home LAN, with 3 cameras directly plugged into the PoE ports on the back of the NVR. However, I also have an outbuilding where I'd like another camera. That building is already connected to my home LAN via a Cat6 from the house and a switch, but it wouldn't be possible to run a 2nd cable all the way from the outbuilding camera into the house. Could I connect that camera to the switch I have on the LAN?

I moved from Nest and never going back. The customisations and integrations with home assistant are second to none.

Correction to your comment about duo cams using 2 channels. That was the case for the old version. The duo 2 uses 1 channel.
I have the old version (Duo PoE). I didn't realize that the Duo 2 only takes up 1 channel until someone commented that.

I thought the rln8-410 only had 100mbit management interface. Are you sure it has 1gig?

What about using the RLN36 NVR in Home Assistant? Can I see all cameras on HA if I use 36? Does HA allow me to playback recording in the past?
How does thread and matter protocols coming on line 2024 affect this system?

You can have as many nvr as you like no need to connect them physically together.

Such a shame that the time lapse is only available via the memory card and it's disabled if connected to the NVR.

I would assume so. I don't use the Alexa ecosystem. But if the EchoShows can view an RTSP stream, then you should be good. If not, I assume someone has a plug in for Home Assistant to do that.
I could be wrong about this, but it is my understanding that alexa doesn't work with the PoE cameras.

I think the Reolink integration uses the ONVIF protocol.

I haven't tested it, it might work. I don't have an RTSP capabile Eufy camera set up right now or I would test it for you.

The duo 2 and the duo 3 don’t connect to the RLN8-410
They sure can. I have mine set up (Duo 3). It works with both hardware revs I have of the RL8. Is your firmware up to date?

Excellent! That got me too. Home Assistant will actually tell you if you need to update the firmware even if the NVR doesn't.

QUESTION: how do you communicate two way? Where is the microphone on the recorder to communicate with the other person?
Via the app. I don't believe you can attach a mic to the DVR.

It's completely fine to leave the auto setup turned on. For any cameras that are not directly connected to the NVR (the PoE ports) you will need to go into the device and set them up manually.

In theory yes, you could connect a touchscreen monitor to the HDMI and USB on the NVR. However, I have found that the mouse driver is weird. I am running PiKVM and I cannot use the mouse to control the NVR.
How do the cameras stay charged? Does the Ethernet cable charge it? Are any batteries required?
The only way your camera will require batteries is if you get a battery version that won't connect to an NVR, but if you get a Poe that stands for power over ethernet, the power comes from the ethernet cable and plugs directly into the nvr and from there into your camera so even if your internet is down as long as the power is on the device will still record and you can later access that video stored on the hdd.

No. The NVR cannot connect over wifi. But if you have wifi cameras on the same network as you NVR you can add them to the NVR.

For cameras, yes, i have doorbell and 2 cameras E1 Zoom, all with wi-fi. For me the problem is i have another camera at balcony, Boavision, and the internet cable enter in one of 2 LAN ports, the other one is for laptop cable, and i am forced to take out the camera cable to connect the NVR. Ive the reolink RNL8 410 PoE with 4 x 12mp dome, but having problems on 4K settings, picture is ok, but sound is missing every 4 secs. I have the NVR wired by ethernet to my WiFi router 18 feet away….. Speed on reolink app only showing up to 6000 kbps on clear. & my internet speed averaging 70 Mbps, it’s better sound on fluent & works fine but wanted better quality pictures and audio , previously I did have tp link from NVR to WiFi but hard wired 2 weeks ago. Expecting better quality on higher resolution but sound is not working as it should. Is there any settings I can adjust to help ? Don’t have monitor linked to NVR atm as it’s in the loft, but can do so if need be. Thanks for any help

If you are using RLN8-410 with Reolink cameras. Can you still connect those same cameras into Frigate software as well, or does RLN "consume" the cameras fully? As Reolink mobile notifications are not as good as I'd hope, I'd wish to use Frigate only for the notifications.
Yes all of the cameras still work in Frigate with the NVR. I just set it up a few weeks ago.

@@ThisSmartHouse Yes, I have a ReoLink NVR where the cameras are on 172.N.N.N and Home Assistant/Frigate is on 192.168.1.N. Even though the ReoLink NVR/Cameras have person and animal detection, I don't think it is as good as Frigate.

No. If you want to be able to view the HDMI output at another location you will need either a balun or a HDMI extender. Those typically have to connect via a dedicated network connection. I did a video on an HDMI splitter / extender, but you just need the extender.

i have REOLINK RLK8-1200D4-A .when i connect to my router the NVR internet connection failed but i only connect to my modem the NVR internet connection ok, if i use ethernet switch connect the router and NVR together , only the router ok the NRV internet connect fail. Do you have the NVR set up for DHCP? Meaning that it pulls an IP address from your router? Because if it worked while connected to the switch, it should work when connected to the router. Also, make sure that the port you connected it to on the router is active (you will have to check the router settings).
By the way, i tried to connect a Boavision camera( wich is not a Reolink) to NVR Reolink, but no success, i guess the NVR know this camera is not a Reolink one. I tried both ways, onvif and ip, and still couldnt connect this camera.

Can you connect the NVR to two different monitors at the same time? For example, I'd like to connect mine to the TV in our bedroom via the HDMI output and to the computer in my office via the VGA port or by spitting the HDMI output. If you want to be able to watch the cameras on your laptop you can use the reolink desktop application. You can also use the app on Android and Apple

If there are NON-Ethernet cameras out there... HOW are you gonna connect them to THAT NVR?
Through your home network. You just need to connect them to your wifi, on the same network/subnet as the NVR's ethernet port. Then connect to the NVR (via keyboard and monitor) and add the IP address.

Avoid the 8 and 16 channel NVR due to the tiny drive and low storage capacity. (Just a few days at 24x7) Instead consider the NVR 36 which is lower cost and can store up to 48TB you supply the hard drive(s).
You can put a bigger HDD in both NVRs
And lower cost due to no hdd and not poe

I upgraded from a Reolink RLN16-410 to RLN36-32, but my cameras aren’t recognized by the new NVR, even though I’m using the correct IP addresses and passwords.
Also, for my Reolink 810WA camera and Video Doorbell, I can see them on the old NVR when connected via PoE, but there’s no way to initialize the WiFi connection. In the app, there’s no option to configure WiFi, and when I connect the NVR to a screen, I can’t find any settings for WiFi either.
Do you know where I can find this information or how to proceed?
Can you see your POE cameras directly on a local client using the Reolink app? If so make sure your network is connected to the NVR’s LAN port. Your cameras should show on the NVR. If you can’t see your cameras on a local client you need to get that working first. I only use a doorbell WiFi camera and as I recall they should also appear. You will need to add them to the NVR channels.

Using the Reolink app? It works while inside of your house, but when outside it fails? You might have to enable UPNP on the NVR and on your internet router.

User friendly my butt. I’ve been trying for four and a half hours to set it up. It’s terrible, just like my last Reolink system.
What issues are you having? If you have ever set up an old school DVR, it is much easier. I just wish they wouldn't require you to go to the NVR to set up cameras.

I like the ability to record to a PC into a folder as a backup. Just write a small command to have the PC auto run once a day to delete files after x many days.
I just use the PC webserver to view them there as the camera can't retrieve them.
To be clear, record to camera's SD card and a copy to the PC.
Try the CX410 if you have street lighting. Mega pixels aren't everything.

They force their cameras to only work with their own system, and you can’t even use them without the NVR, for example by connecting to the router.
Reolink? Not true at all. Their cameras support industry standards (RTSP / ONVIF). I am using my Reolink cameras in Frigate (open source NVR / object detection). Both directly connect and through the NVR.

The door bell had it and worked just fine, but the bullet cameras I had only connected with RTSP or ONVIF if the NVR was around, when I turned off the NVR they stopped working. So they only connected to the NVR then to HA or other NVRs through their own NVR. I had purchased the bundle with 8 cameras included.

Yes, the cameras that come in a package with an nvr will only work if they are connected to that nvr. They are not stand alone cameras.

Can you add a camera via LAN?
For example, I intend to have the NVR in my house connected to my home LAN, with 3 cameras directly plugged into the PoE ports on the back of the NVR.
However, I also have an outbuilding where I'd like another camera. That building is already connected to my home LAN via a Cat6 from the house and a switch, but it wouldn't be possible to run a 2nd cable all the way from the outbuilding camera into the house. Could I connect that camera to the switch I have on the LAN?
