For this video I am using U.S terminology
CROCHET US vs UK CROCHET
Chain (chn) is the same for both
US single (sc) = UK double crochet (dc)
US half double (hdc) = UK half treble (htr)
US double (dc)= UK treble (tr)
US triple (treble) (tr) = UK double treble (dtr)
US double triple (treble) (dtr)= UK triple treble (trtr)

Great pattern and I finally got it after a couple goes...didn't notice the note about stitch count being 29 on the first row. I also wanted to point out that while it's not specifically mentioned with Wave 2, (since the CH 3 at the beginning of the row counts as the first TC) you skip the first stitch after the CH3. I was listening to the video instead of watching, so I didn't skip the first stitch. This, of course, left me with an extra stitch at the end of the row. You'll also want to remember that the CH3 counted as the first TC, so on your return SC row, ensure you remember the 29th SC in the top of that CH3. Such a beautiful pattern! Thank you!
This!
Note: I misspoke in row 1 saying you'll have 30 stitches at the end. You'll actually have 29. Regardless, the multiple is correct and your waves will work. Sorry about that, I'm unable to edit the video once it's published. xx
I love anything having to do with beach. Very creative! 🌍☮️🌲
Thank you , Jennie, me too ! 🏝️ 🫶🏻
Of course. 🤗
Great video:) Like the 2 and 2 reminder. Thank you for including the stitch diagram. I am trying to learn to use patterns with them😊
Glad it was helpful! 👏🏻💕💕
I just finished this. It came out wonderful! I have to make the seagulls and the starfish and stitch them on. I intend to make a plain single crochet backing with the yarn I used for the sky, sew it together, drop a lining and zipper in it and use it for a zipper pouch to store my notions. Its the oerfect size for my project bag. Thank you so much for this absolutely lovely tutorial. PS- rather than rip it out on that foundation chain count oopsy, I simply decreased that last stitch on that first half double row to bring the stitch count from 30 to 29. It is totally unnoticeable and came out just fine! You are a great teacher and I enjoyed ths CAL project a lot! ❤
Fantastic ! 😀👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️
Thank you for your precise, careful, and perfectly explained tutorial. ❤
I love this! It's inspired me to do a whole seascape wrap. I hope to show you when it's done (it'll probably be next year realistically)
😲 wowee ! I’m so honored to be a part of your inspiration. This sounds amazing. Yes please show me - I’d love to see it when it’s finished. Good luck - sounds like a lovely project 👏🏻💕😀💕
omg me too! I was looking for a beautiful wave pattern and came across this video and am making a shawl/wrap with this beachy wave look. my work place has a theme of waves and one of our messages is "let's make waves together" so I was wanting to make wraps for some of the ladies in my office who are always cold from the AC.
This pattern was a real treat to find and follow along! Thank you.
Thank you so much ! 😀👏🏻💕
That would make a cute beach cabin pillow.😃
This is just so cute. I am going to make a baby blanket with even more colors for the sand, waves, and sky. Hopefully it will come out more artsy than craftsy but it still got me excited! Thanks for the inspiration and guidance.
Ohhh that sounds like it will be beautiful. I hope you’ll consider showing me when you’re done 🥰
Thank you so much for sharing the beautiful creation and your very helpful and calming tutorial!! 😉
Thank you so much 😀💕🧶🏝️
Thank you for the diagram and the tutorial, this is so cute and fun to work on as a little summer project!
So glad 😀🤗💕
I have finally managed to follow and understand your pattern thanks to your video. Thanks so much x
I’m so glad ! 😀👏🏻👏🏻💕
Your work is very inspiring, I could see a canvas in your colors and details. Thank you very much. Your 💡 are very important for me. God bless you and give you more inspiration to share....FROM SAN DIEGO AND MY HEART TO YOURS SINCERELY, MARCY G.
How kind of you , I appreciate you taking the time to tell me this , thank you so much 💕💕💕
I am planning on using this wave stitch in an upcoming project.. Thank you for the tutorial 🌹
Wonderful! 😀👏🏻🧶❤️
I think it's awesome the way you have replied to everyone's comments & answered their questions. I love this square & I plan to make it into a larger afghan for my niece who owns a beach cottage! Your answers about sizing & specific colors of the yarn are very helpful. I can't wait to get started on this. Thanks again!!
Thank you for the acknowledgment! 💕 I’m so glad you found the answers you needed in the comments. I get so excited seeing how the square is being used.
The Afghan is a fabulous idea 👏🏻😀
Thank you so much for a fantastic video, you've been such a great inspiration ❤ especially during this difficult time we are all going through. I'm making mine into a baby blanket, and looking forward to adding the applique. Love from a Soggy Southampton UK. xx xx
This warms my heart, thank you so much. What a lovely idea to make this into a baby blanket 😍😍😍
Thank you for this beautiful stitch and the great explanation of the steps I really like it I never tried this wave stitch before but definitely interested in trying it one day 👍
I’m so happy you like it! It would be great for a multi colored blanket I think ! It’s on my long list of blankets I want to make. 😂 thank you for your kind comment 💕
This is a beautiful square! ❤ it. 😊
Thank you, Michelle 😀💕
So excited to try this stitch.
Great! I hope you enjoy it 😀👏🏻
Love this design!
Thank you 😊 😀💕
Beautiful ! Design
Thank you so much for showing us the pattern, again thanks a lot
So happy you like it 😀💕
Beautiful square, I just love the beach! I found the colors you used but you didn't mention the colour for the stafish? It's a pretty shade
😁
Thank you ! It’s called Apricot. Blush is very close to it (as an alternative) . Both are stylecraft special dk
Thank you so much! 😁
Loved the video, just stared crocheting. You are very generous with your tips and you explained it very clearly. Thank you!! I plan to do it as a baby blanket.
Does this pattern work with thicker crochet hooks?
I’m so glad you found it helpful 💕 absolutely, it should be fine working with a bigger hook. What a lovely idea to make this into a baby blanket! 😍
@@PlayHookywithMe Thank you for your fast reply!! I tried to follow you on instagram but couldn’t find you
@@robertamalagon1713 I’m there - it’s play_hooky_with_me_ 🤗 (it should work if you add the underscoring between the words)
Just beautiful!
Thank you so much !
I love this stitch and I’m curious do you still use a 3.5 hook when your making it bigger??
It depends on how big you’re wanting it and how you’re approaching it. If you are wanting it just slightly bigger , then a bigger hook and yarn in the way to go.
If you are doing something like turning this into a wall hanging , pillow or a blanket then it would be a case of adding more stitches . So you’d start by making a longer row of multiples.
But you could combine both and use thicker yarn and hook to help it grow with the bigger stitch count 👍🏻
Thank you for your fast response!! I’m doing a larger size baby blanket. I will up my hook size then. Thank you again :))
That is so cute!!!! I think I can do it!!
Thank you! 😀🧶
I really like you video. Thanks a lot ❤️
Thank you for the video! Love this!
I appreciate it, thank you !
This is a charming motif, and your instructions are very clear. I’d love to make a sofa throw (and/or a pillow cover), but have no idea how many 323 yd. skeins I would need. Could you share approximately how much yarn you used in making this small sample so I can figure it out?
Sure! The square was 7X7 inches. The skeins I used have 322 yards and weigh 100 grams (stylecraft special dk) . In this small sample I used about 19 grams in total which is 57.96 yards.
The color changes were pretty even so I would say I used about 20 yards of each color give or take.
Here is how I calculated it :

@@PlayHookywithMe thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing❤
Thank you ❣️ this is so well explained & organised. However, I don't know why don't I get the ridge effect?
🌴🏖️
Thank you , you don’t get a ridge effect? What happens instead?
@@PlayHookywithMe hi. 🙂
I'm holding my piece with the strangler from starting chain on the left (that's supposed to be the right side) & I just get a flat normal Crochet regular standard look. Maybe I'm doing something wrong... Or maybe that should be the wrong side? ☺️
@@akakonoha Have you done more than one? Once you do the rows with the varying heights of stitches it will create the wave effect. Otherwise I’m not sure what ridge you’re referring to. Sorry 😅
@@PlayHookywithMe yes, maybe. I mean the surface ridges. I'll just do a surface slip stitch after... Thank you anyways 😉
Hi I have a question, I have just done a sample following your instructions but my count is still off. How do you keep to a stitch count of 30? Which stitch am I missing, having followed the foundation row of 2nd chain from hook and half double crochets along. Getting a tad confusion help/advice appreciated thank you :)
I will try this in the morning and see if I have any suggestions. It has been a long time since I designed this pattern .
@@PlayHookywithMe Thank you :)
So sorry it took so long to reply to you . I just watched the video and it’s my fault. I misspoke. You are probably getting 28 right? Then all is good. Hopefully you realized this already 💕
I would like to make a pillow with this pattern. How would you advise for the pillow form to not show through the crochet
This sounds counterintuitive but I’d recommend going with thicker yarn AND using a smaller hook than recommended for the yarn.
Using a smaller hook will make the stitches tighter but will also reduce the finished size so using a thicker yarn weight will help with the size shrinkage.
But the quick answer is, use a smaller hook will help fill in the gaps.
1 to 2 mmm less depending on your tension
Love this! 💖🚀💫✨
So glad 👏🏻💕
“Play some hookey”...I 😍 it
😂👏🏻💕🙌🏻
Hi! I know this is an old video but I've had it saved for awhile. When you are doing the HDC row, are you going into the 3rd loop? It looks like you are but I just want to make sure.
Sorry. I meant after the HDC and making the 1st wave.
That’s right… when you’re doing the wave , it’s sc in the first stitch , a sc in the second stitch and then a hdc into the third stitch. 👍🏻💕
@@PlayHookywithMe I get that the 3rd STITCH is a HDC. I'm trying to figure out if when you are doing the stitches for the first waves, it looks like you are going into the 3rd loop and FL instead of the V part of the stitches. I know this would make a ridge. Someone else commented that they didn't have the ridge that you had and I wonder if that was the reason. I hope I'm making sense!
@@angelacastle2216 oh yes , I see what you mean … no I didn’t work into the back loop only. I’ll watch again to make sure
But I know I would have mentioned that if I had. I think it just gives that affect with the turning on each row.
Addendum:
Double checked - I’m just working into the stitches as normal going under both loops of the stitch 👍🏻
@@PlayHookywithMe thanks so much for your quick responses! Working on a throw version now 😊
Hi, I love the pattern and plan on using it to make a baby blanket. I noticed in the video you said if you are making a blanket to skip the initial row of half double stitches, and I was wondering why that is?
Sorry, if that was confusing. I was saying to skip that for those that were just wanting to learn the wave stitch for other projects.
I created that first row as an edge for this particular square/beach scene.
If you like the look of it , then disregard that direction and use it in your blanket. Completely up to you. 🧶💕
@@PlayHookywithMe OK, thank you so much for clarifying. I like the frame work it gives so I'll definitely leave it in.
This is a great tutorial for wave stitch but how can you chain 30 then start second chain from hook but end up with 30 when start wave 1? Counted stitches on your chart wave and = 29. Very confused.
I misspoke and mentioned this in the description of the video. It doesn’t affect the count for your wave. You want 29 chains for this sample. 👍🏻💕
At the beginning you said if it were going to be being made into a blanket to start the sand wave before ending the first half DC, cand you explain?
Yes, if you don’t want to start with the hdc and you want to create the wave immediately, then create your chain + 2 for the turning chain and then place your first stitch into the 2nd chain from the hook that I say to make in row 2.
You might like keeping the hdc foundation row even if you’re making a blanket , though.
If you are still answering questions for this tutorial, I need some help. At 3:20 when you complete the first row of half doubles, you say you should have 30 or count 30. Shouldn't that really be 28? The chain was 30 and you started with the second chain from the hook. My next question is should every row have a count of 28?
You’re absolutely right, I misspoke. You should have 28 at that point and throughout. 💕
@@PlayHookywithMe thank you!!!
What loop do you go into for your sc in between the waves?
Please share a time stamp so I can see what portion of the video you’re referring to. It has been several years since I made this tutorial 💕
I love it. Try to crochet it for 2 days and for the 7th time now.
I wanted 7x14+2=100.
But it always ends at 96.
I can't find the problem.
Pls help me someone. Thank you.
Are you started with the wave or the hdc row first?
With the hdc, like you said.
@@CarLa-dn9ms Ok, I played around with it, and I can't figure out how you are getting 96 stitches. You should be getting 99. The only thing I can suggest then, is to add some extra hdc's when you reach the end of your chain. This way you can get past the HDC row and then you'll be on track. You can do it two ways:

I am gonna try it later!
Hello😊
I would like to make a “sofa snuggler” for my daughter- or a blanket to cuddle up with on cold nights (yes, we get them in San Diego, CA!) - about 52” x 60”. I hope these questions aren’t untoward. I am an intermediate crochet -er. I’ve watched your video, especially the beginning of it several times. And unfortunately I am not good enough at the math to figure out what my starting chain should measure. As well, I was hoping you could tell me how much of each color of yarn to order from your tiny URL… your work is beautiful- and since I’m newly retired, after 35 years of teaching (no judgments on the math issue please 🙁) I have lots of time to work on my crochet and get better. Thanks so much for your video and perhaps even answers to my questions!
If you are going to be using the same yarn and hooks size (I think I saw that you are) then based off of my measurements (30 chains made a 7"x7" inch square) here is what I got for your sofa snuggler : I rounded up and rounded down to make the math easier. A 49"x 56" blanket would be 198 chains (this includes the 2 chains you need for turning) If you want to round up and do a 56" x 63 " blanket then you will start with 226 chains (this includes the 2 chains needed for turning)
To get these measurements I just kept going up 7 inches (30 chains) until I reached how big you want your blanket to be.
I don't know how much yarn you will need for this blanket. The skeins of stylecraft special dk have 323 yards each. Once you decide on your blanket size you can convert it into yards and get a rough idea of how much you need.
Hope that helps.
@@PlayHookywithMe oh YES it helps- thank you sooo much😌

Hi Roz, I’m on The Lovecraft website getting ready to buy my yarn… And the colors on the website don’t really match the ones that you wrote down in your comments area… It may be that the duck egg blue is no longer made, but the blues don’t look the same and the parchment… Looks a lot lighter than the sandy part of your blanket. I just want to make it look as nice as yours. So thanks in advance for giving me a moment of your time… Again!
@@Wendy56494 hi Wendy - I’ll reply soon today with the colors I used. I’ll double check and make sure I posted the correct colors 💕
@@Wendy56494 Hi Wendy, I'm sitting with the square and my yarn swatches and these are indeed the colors, I'm also on the site right now and it shows duck egg is still available.
So to be specific I used:
Sky : Sherbert
Water: Storm Blue
Tips of Water : Duck Egg
Sand: Parchment
Birds: Cream (but only because I didn't have white on hand)
Starfish : Blush
I think maybe the colors are just lighter in general on their site. I hope that helps xx
Hello, I would love to make this pattern to fit a 14 in. Square pillow. Can you help me with how many chains do I start with please?
Sure- all you need to do is make up a swatch for yourself and measure it. Each wave consists of 14 chains, so I would recommend you make a swatch with 1 or 2 waves and measure it to see how many inches it is .
Then you can see how many waves you’ll need to reach 14”.
Thanks so much, I'll definitely try it out.
I would love to do this in a twin size afgan, any way you could post a written diagram?
Sorry, that won’t happen any time soon. That would take a lot of time and would have to be something I charge for 💕
nice
Are you sure the „corrected advice“ you’re giving to people about there being 28 stitches in a row instead of 30 is really correct? According to your own graphs that pop up for wave 1 & 2, I count 29 stitches on each : 2 multiples of 14 and one extra stitch at the end in keeping with your 2&2 plan.
For me the advice is correct. I get 28 when I complete the row. Have you tried the pattern and gotten something else?
Please count the stitches in your wave graphs…there are really 29 across in each graph. Plus at timestamp 10:34 where you lay your first completed wave down flat, I can even count your single crochets across very clearly…there are really 29. I‘m not trying to give you a hard time, I just want to get it right before starting my project 😊
@spacebizkit1966 I understand and I appreciate it. The multiple is correct whether you end up with 28 or 29 stitches. Please work up a small sample with 3 waves for yourself to see what I mean. I’ll work a practice swatch too and add an addendum in the description ❤️
I'm starting my 4th color and it's not laying flat! Grr am I doing something wrong? Will I have to size it when I'm done?
Thank you so much for your tutorials!❤
Has anyone made this into a large blanket? How did it look?
I want to but I wondered the same thing
Is there a written pattern?
Sorry, no
@PlayHookywithMe okay thanks.
written pattern?
Sorry, nothing written for this pattern. Just a video.
Is there a pdf pattern?
No , sorry
Could you please try not to put text over your work areas as it can be very difficult trying to work out what you are doing and following. It would really help us beginners. Thank you.
Are you meaning subtitles? That is controlled by you and can be shut off. If you are on a computer , click the gear on the bottom right of the video and choose “subtitles -off”.
If you are on your phone tap on the video and you’ll see 3 dots at the top right corner. Choose “captions off”.
Hope that helps 💕
No, its the ones you have put up there I white, wave 1, wave 2 etc. It would help if they were lower and OT covering your actions in the project. :)
