Video games cost more. That’s bad. It’s always bad. Don’t pay more for games. That’s bad.
Today I explain why the reasons publishers have given for this change aren’t particularly believable.

Every publisher now wants every consumer to spend eight hours per day playing a game they sold them for $70, and spend thousands more on microtransactions while they do it. The problem is there's only so much time in a day and consumers only have so much money. If every company keeps doing this, they will find that only a handful of games can maintain sustainable dedicated followings like that simply because there will be too many games competing for dominance in a limited pool of consumer man hours. If you're playing Call of Duty all day, you're not playing Battlefield, and if you're playing Fortnite all day, you're not playing Player Unknown's Battlegrounds. But every game wants to be the next big thing, and they're all doomed to take an ever smaller slice of the pie as the market becomes increasingly saturated.
And it gets worse because these publishers' shareholders expect constant growth; a growth which they can't possibly maintain forever. Once the growth reaches a plateau, investors will start selling off their shares and these companies will start to _lose_ money, and then they won't be able to keep churning out these games.
Good point. I never thought of that
All video game companies care about are short term gains, not long term growth. It literally quarter to quarter, especially in the AAA market.
This is literally just video game mercantilism.
Capitalism. The issue is capitalism.
That's also why the crunch is a problem. If the studio was a worker coop there wouldn't be crunch and there would be less of a tendency for people to put in nasty exploitative shit, since often people lower on the totem pole dislike doing blatantly unethical shit like that
If you sell your game in China then you basically have infinite customers. So what if they want you to sell your soul and look the other way when they steal your customer's data.

Imagine spending $70 on an intentionally unfinished game, then have to buy their “annual season pass”, which is basically paying for planned patches, AND THEN having to buy DLC stuff for a better gaming experience.
Haha yeah big games are kinda shit imo. I got my first console upgrade when I got halo 3. 3 odst and reach were both incredible too. I then also really started enjoying the Forza series too. Halo 4 killed the chances of me getting an Xbox One and then I built my first PC. Pc gaming is just more flexible. You are less likely to see these half assed $60/70 games and more likely that you'll find a game that you can see grow for a fraction of the price. A few games thst I've picked up early access thst sum up to less than $60 include : $15 Kerbal Space Program, $15 minecraft, $15 beam NG drive, $15 wreakfest. And I think I paid even less for most of those games. Not to mention you also get access to modding so thst just widens the gap. I find in far more interesting to see a game grow properly and I'm a lot more likely to purchase the next game that these developers make as they have built my trust with them.
We don't have to imagine...
@@tmi1234567 exactly so glad I switched to pc where instead of begging my parents to get a 60$ game I would ask them for 20$ games or 7$ games
Buy the games years after they are released when they are already patched and with the expansions included, during steam discount season right after the new year.
Not even one of my favorite games, Ark survival evolved, can get away with that kind of shit. granted, they've had price drops before down to 20 bucks, which is amazing considering how big the game actually is, but honestly, I can't see it with anything. Not even them.
The worst part is that the increase in price is only going to line the CEO pockets more instead of going to the developers who actually crunch and make the game.
Maybe, we can get developers to sell their games through means that don't involve going through the middleman in order to work around this? I've read that a theoretical way to support music artists is to pirate the music, then send a check to the artists...
The rich get richer and the poor get even more poor. Nothing new here, happens all the time
It's about the investors. Basically shareholders only really care about companies making money, so the CEO has to be seen to making as much money as possible to pay out more in dividends every year otherwise the share price falls and the CEO is booted out.
Then the developers get fucking death threats on Twitter because the game released poorly (*cough* Cyberpunk *cough*) Then those same idiots who send those threats go and defend the 70$ price tag like it’s nothing.
I definitely play games all of the time but the “general gaming community” is full of fucking idiots.

Movies cost as much to produce, but you can buy them for like 20 bucks or lower
Movies are also a weird market. They get most of their money from what is essentially a one use rental (box office), followed by licencing from streaming services. Unlike games, which depend on sales, the amount movies make from retail sales is miniscule in comparison. So while I agree games should be cheaper, the comparison isn't really fair.
@@wave1090 But most people only go to the cinema once to see any particular film. Just like people only buy a game once.
yes and no. while movies are about as expensive as modern games, games do still sell less than movies. despite what many belive, gaming isnt as mainstream now as other mediums like music or movies and there is a significant age cut at which people just dont buy games anymore as well as a huge margin of young people that have never bought a 60$ game or played many games exept maybe some mobile ones or as a kid on a handheld. I entierly agree with the video and that the price increase is just bad but i can not see a world where you can play a new AAA Game for 20$. The sales for that are just not high enough. (Also movies make alot of money by reditributing the same product diffrently: movies make money from box office sales, Blu Ray/DVD sales, by licencing it to Netfix and so on and by licensing it to potentially a few hundrered tv stations around the world. So oftentimes they kind of sell the same product to the same customer twice or even thrice

While I would love to imagine that the people who are angry about this price hike will actually defy it in someway, it'll most likely end up like a EA/Activision type situation. This is why I am sticking with my Xbox one
Kinda reminds me of Nintendo. Their business decisions can be pretty asinine, with many nodding in agreement to that, only for all thst to be ignored when they drop a good game
Fucking EA. God they're awful. You know the Sims games? Well Sims 4 has been constantly critiqued for how garbage and empty it was from the start and how you basically need mods to make it playable let alone fun. Creation is super busted, and storytelling is near impossible. Only good thing is the graphics (and as a mac user, that the mac version is truly ported to work on mac and not a shitty emulator like the otherwise super good 3 was). Currently, if you buy all of the game, the deluxe version of the base game and all the expansion, game, and stuff packs, and the newly minted kits, all at retail price when they came out, no sales or bundles, it costs 899.58$. It's absolutely nuts. Each pack has very little in it, and even after years we still haven't gotten everything that was in 3, and most of it is so badly done. Like the Star Wars expansion, most people didn't want it, some thought it'd be interesting to have Jedi's and use the force, sorta like how other past supernatural types worked, but it was literally just an advertisement for star Wars Land at Disneyland/DisneyWorld. Literally an exact copy. Impressive in the detailing, but that's all it was. The clothes for the world are literally the costumes cast members wear. And no fun jedi powers, it was just a vacation area with very little to actually do, and nothing that interacted with the rest of the game. They really made people pay 20$ for an ad. Fuck EA.
There's a reason I haven't spent a single penny on this game, and actively help with getting the Windows crack to work for Mac. They treat the people at Maxis like shit, don't let them actually be creative and put out fully developed packs with a lot in them, stopped making the game compatible for machines running only 32 bit and only have updates for 64 bit (making the money people with older computers basically wasted) reference common mods in game descriptions showing they know how much those mods are needed to make it playable, and expect 900$ from me? Fuck no. There are good artists on the team, some of the "gurus" are really creative and knowledgeable, some of the stuff is really pretty. But there is maybe 200$ tops worth of game so far, not 900$.

This could be a subtle way of pushing people into using more online subscriptions and calling for digital-only. I see this as an excuse to get people to demand cheaper games, and they'll kill physical media, lower their prices and say, "Sorry, people wanted cheaper games." 9:15 I spoted an error: the assumption that every sell of a game is "pure profit". Platforms like Steam or the digital store of the consoles charge 30% for every sell, the government charges like 35% of the remaining, so the company would take only 45% of the price paid by the customer.
For physical copies, the retail stores also charge their own fee, and there is also the transportation cost.

You mean, you have to put work into the unending bugs and glitches, the empty open worlds, the terrible physics, the graphical downgrades and the broken AIs??
Nah, you gotta TRIPLE CHECK that the in-game store is always working, right??
Doubly funny since most games have one or the other, only rarely both
Do you really think the only increase in development costs of games in the last few decades has been from in game stores ? These conversations are pointless because people dont know how games are made or the current state of the industry, the reason games have less quality and more microtransactions is because developers have to reduce cost and increase revenue to make the same profits, as the development costs are going up but the price is the same.
Why would anyone round down when it comes to spend their own money? One should always round up.
It's subconscious, not a choice
