    It looks like Kratos's horseshoe has an intentionally smaller gap so the axe physically can't fall out as he moves. To slot it in and out he raises it to the thinner part of the shaft where it can fit through.
    Doing that would take a LOT of practice... but I feel like it'd eventually become natural.

    The omega shape of the clip actually serves a useful purpose. Note that the shaft of the axe widens as it nears the blade. If you watch Kratos' sheathing animation carefully, you'll notice he puts the axe through the gap in the omega clip where the shaft is narrower, then allows the axe to slide down in the clip. The wider part of the shaft will fit in the "hole" of the omega, but not through the gap, so at that point it's secure from falling out no matter how you move -you have to actually lift the axe straight up, so the narrow part of the shaft can fit through the gap, to get it out. Using this shape, perhaps with longer and wider guide legs to help with aligning the axe, would probably make this carry method more reliable.

    I think you misunderstand the design of Kratos' axe holder. The entrance to it is smaller than the widest part of the axe handle, but it's wider than the thinner part of the axe handle. If the axe enters the holder and twists then the axe will be far more secure in all scenarios. The main issue would be trying not to hit your head.

    I know I'm late to the party (as I just recently discovered your channel) but it seems to me that given the bio mechanics of your arm you would be better served to have the axe head on your off-hand shoulder. In my arm chair scabbard designer mind I would:
    1. make the cross-body strap/harness span from weak-side shoulder to strong-side waist
    - this minimizes how much you need to bend your arm and rotate your shoulder - it would be similar movement to scratching an itch around your kidney or retrieving a wallet from your back pocket
    2. connect the cross-body harness to your belt so that it stayed at a constant angle relative to your waist.
    3. make the axe head holder (be it horseshoe, hooks, or some other design) opening parallel to the strap (as opposed to perfectly vertical)
    - this should result in the axe hanging diagonally (for a right handed user the axe head would be by your left shoulder with the handle ending somewhere around your right hip or butt cheek, depending on handle length)
    4. Add a small hook to the bottom of the shoulder strap or belt that angles diagonally toward your strong hand side for the bottom of the handle to rest on which should serve a few purposes
    - keep the grip in a consistent location (muscle memory would train to perfectly place your hand and you'd never have to grope around to find the grip)
    - hold the handle more securely making running and jumping less prone to dislodge the axe as well as keep the handle from freely swinging all over creation
    - give you an extra orientation point when holstering the axe (you could feel for the hook with the back or side of your hand and know the exact angle to manipulate the axe to ensure the head goes to the right spot
    Below is a really bad rendition of how it would look for a right-handed user:

    The problem with your design is that the hook is attached to a loose strap that slides out of position every time you move. Kratos' version is directly part of his vest thing and is therefore far more secure and practical. Try again dude!

      Lets also note that kratos' ring allows a more secure grip. Shad's open horse shoe has a wide opening, while kratos' has a small opening, meaning to holster it, thd narrow side of the handle enters, and you twist to hook it

    There's just one tiny downside. If you are in a crowded place, let's say a marketplace, it very easy for someone who is standing behind you to disarm you or just take your axe and plant it in the back of your skull. Not so easy to do if your weapon is at the side of your belt.

    • @_Arminius
      @_Arminius 6 лет назад +27

      True, but I did consider the fact that if he wants to kill you, because somebody put a price on your head, he's close enough to stick his dagger in the soft spot of your head. If his intent is to disarm you, he's probably not alone. Lesson to be drawn here is to always watch your back. (Yes, in my scenario I have really pissed off several high ranking people XD )

      Evelyn Ace I mentioned that in the comment above yours. An assassin would know to jam the dagger directly into the brain where the spine meets the skull or behind the ear. The spine's a little trickier.
      carlos conde I know, you can't just jank it out, you might get into a heap of trouble when he turns around :-D.
      Shads design makes it easier to lock it on your back (if indeed there were some hooks at the end), but if some people are looking for you, you might want to avoid places with a large number of people passing you by. They're also going to spot you easily because you will match the description they've been given which will contain: "He's carrying a big axe on his back."

    • @evelynace388
      @evelynace388 6 лет назад +3

      Arminius The problem with that lime of thinking is it implies your in full battle dress and as far as an indicator goes plenty of people traveled with weapons on their back when not in use so it's not nearly as obviuse as you think. Besides if discretion is what your going for get a belt loop at the nearest leatherworker. Because it was pretty rare to be hunted or marked out for assianation. Unless you were a noble in which case their are 20 different things identifying you other than that axe and even if the ace was the only thing as a noble you have bodyguards if any of them have axes have them wear it the same way.

    The turks used a similar piece of iron (omega shaped) with leather straps as kratos uses to carry their arquebus on their back, they use the same 'locking' mechanism that the weapon was more wide then broad, so it would lock in when flat against the back, but unlock and fall away when turned. there was also a pole attached to the omega that they would stick into the sand to mount their arquebus on.

    A good solution for it to stay sturdy was if the hook was extremely magnetic and you built the part of the axe that connects with the hook out of an opposite polarity magnet, that way the axe stays magnetized to your back. It would take some force to pry it off, but that's why its built for your everyday God of War.

      BertyFromDK No Galar and Fjalar are the dwarves who killed the giant Kvasir and made mead from his wisdom that Odin stole.
      The dwarven smiths in norse mythology are two sets of brothers. The sons of Ivaldi and Brokkr and Eitri. After playing a prank on Thor where he stole his wife's hair, Loki convinced the two sets of brothers to compete with each other for the gods' favor. The sons of Ivaldi made Sif new hair for Thor, a new ship for Freyr, and a magic spear for Odin. Brokkr and Eitri made an infinitely multiplying gold ring for Odin, a magic boar mount for Freyr, and Mjolnir for Thor. Brokkr and Eitri won the contest.
      Brokkr and Eitri are the ones in God of War, but they are spelled Brok and Sindri

    I had a similar problem when I took up archery. I got the over the shoulder quiver because it looks cool, then very quickly discovered that the angles to make that work were not friendly to newbies... At first I would reach back and essentially miss the quiver with a stack of arrows and drop them all over the ground, but over time I figured out how to effectively load them.
    I figure it would be a similar use case with an axe.

    There's something you're missing about the relationship between Kratos' frost axe and the Ω hook. The hook is specifically designed to catch the axe where it's wider, up by the head, and release the axe where it's thinner, closer to the grip. That's how it stays in place. So you would slide the axe up and out then out to draw it, and then place it back the same way in reverse.

    okay, when you said that lifting the axe up with your wrist is "superhuman" i had to know...i heard "challenge accepted" in my mind and needed to try this because it looks super-easy on camera and i just assume you didnt have a ton of wrist strength. Little backstory here for perspective. I'm a blacksmith of about 15-16 years, and i had surgery 4 days ago on my abdomen where i had some unfortunate stabbing. so i'm not in my best strength right now and in the early stages of rehab to get back in shape. fortunately this is almost 100 percent wrist and shoulder work and after 4 days of light movement i'm a bit weak everywhere. So being a blacksmith and injured i should be equaled out to something halfway comparable to working class average. Now the axe i used was a double sided wood chopping axe, so considerably larger than the single axe in the video but probably about 30 percent lighter than the Kratos axe made of steel. now i'm not stupid, so i wasnt about to do an injured swing blindly behind my back with a razor sharp axe. it was in the "dull pile" of the shop and pretty blunt, plus i taped the crap out of it with 3 layers of duct tape to ensure there was nothing sharp at all, which i am now glad i did. stood as shown, extended the axe and gave it a go. Now i wont lie and say this was easy, there was straining and some comical sound involved as well as profanity. its VERY awkward, its difficult and i did whack my shoulder in the first try, but it got there. is it superhuman? nope. Injured blacksmith with a fairly similar sized weapon did it on the first try, and i assure you i am mortal, the big wound on my stomach and the slow recovery from that injury reminded me of that aspect in full. plenty mortal, i now regret this adventure and am a little sore, but it worked... technically. second try didnt make it up, fizzled out halfway and dropped the tip, third try did pretty good. then my shoulder hurt and i quit and sat down for a bit. so its tough but humanly possible if you have blacksmith arms and the willpower. Practical...shit no, doing that with a sharp blade would be dumb as hell and i didnt have a harness so i have no idea where it ended up exactly and no way of knowing if it would have holstered correctly either of the successful 2/3 attempts. I'm assuming a god with lots of experience could do that pretty easily and it doesnt require super-human anything, just dangerous and impractical for us hoomanz. i do NOT recommend trying this with any sharp anything, and if you have any injury or are less than a full week past major surgical work please do not try this. my back is killing me right now and im fairly sure a blunt axe to the head would be even worse. but despite how much i dont recommend this or claim its usefulness in any way...its very humanly doable and with some practice i dont see why its even overly difficult.
    i think your problem may have been an undersized beard. i noticed Kratos in the thumbnail pics has a rather triumphant beard, larger but similar to mine. Huge beard...easy as pie. fairly large beard...barely successful. trimmed beard...utter failure. So, out of 3 test subjects the level of beard power seems proportional to the success of the holstering...coincidence? maybe. Go swing a hammer fullering for a few weeks, main-line some rogain and bullshark testosterone, let that beard grow out and then try it. you'll get it every time. easy peazy. lol (Note: everything in the second column is bullshit, just a disclaimer for the readers who may be shy on brain-cells. do not do intravenous drugs, especially hair growth products. The only drugs i recommend are coffee, lean protein and manual labor. just disclaimering and covering my ass here.)

    The way he picks it up off of his back is with the head facing into his arm rather than away, and he doesn't twist or "flick" it right side up until the blade has cleared his back and is at his side.

    Something important to notice about Kratos' axe holder is that the angle down is then complemented by angled upward facing "hooks" that would help to secure it further

    The horse shoe design is meant for the handles narrow part the front to go into the horse shoe, then turn 90° so the blade is flat to your back so it stays secure, then spin it out of the horse shoe to engage the enemy

  • @MuradBeybalaev

    I still think you should try the original Ω latch design. Making it stick out and not lie flat is only a matter of attaching a beefy chunk of material on the belt/armor just beneath the hinge/pivot.
    You'd also have to be inserting/removing the axe with the blade aligned towards yourself to fit through.

  • @fatharmonix
    @fatharmonix 5 лет назад

    The key to the way it is supposed to function is in the taper of the handle. The horseshoe would work in the manner shown if you inserted the handle at the narrow part and then slid it (down) up the taper towards the axe head.

    Kratos wouldnt be able to do a lot of things if physics applied. But if it did he would probably just beat up physics and kill it.

    • @greatmightypanda
      @greatmightypanda 6 лет назад +3

      God of physics sounds much more boring until you realise that quantum physics would allow for destruction at an abstract level, literally unmaking reality at a whim.

    A couple things that might improve it. I think you need to find the "sweet spot" on your back and tighten it a lot more so it doesnt move also on the prongs it bends in slightly so it creates a more of a circle. Very interesting topic though thanks for the video Shad

    • @canary0074
      @canary0074 6 лет назад +6

      Damon Hallam I would definitely agree. The loop you have the hook in is far too loose to be effective.
      A few years back (unintentional pun) I tried my hand at making a back-scabbard and what I found to work the best is to have the loop that goes around your torso to be tight. For the greatest ease you would want the loop to also attach/be a part of the belt you wear around your waist. That would be the most stable, and also emulates the two-part sword scabbards used for the waist.

    I think one flaw with your rig versus Kratos' is that you can see that his is affixed to his pauldron, rather than a loose strap, so his would actually be held in place more stably without worrying about it slipping around.
