And Dad of Girl.
I think the other main problem is the belt itself. It becomes lose way too fast moving the hook all over your back thereby making attaching the axe onto the hook and have the axe stay there securely way more difficult then it should be.
Love your stuff these are just amazing videos
Realistically it would probably work best if the two belts were secured together which I think he mentioned in one of the video's. For somebody doing it full time I think the belt and baldric being made into one harness piece would probably be the most suitable possibility to keep that from happening.
I think the biggest issue with the real axes is the fact the dont have a secondary point of contact. Kratos' axe has 2 nitches in it to catch the hook, so it needs to me lifted some in order to actually twist.
OMG, this little thief stole my heart away.

Now you should do a thing about hanging shields on your back. It's too common a fantasy trope. And I understand why. It can free up a hand for other things. See Link for examples.
SheosMan117
In case of round shield:
Have the belt over your left shoulder.
Have 2 hooks on it that only allow the handle to go through then the shield is tilted towards right shoulder.
Then reaching for the handle with your left hand you tilt the shield the right way.
No way of it falling out unless you are upside-down.
More complex shields have the handles placed by the maker and he could probably add something to help to carry it on the back. This design still seems to be among the better ones, apart from the struggle of hooking the shield back.
Shad, I said that before and I must say it again: Your castle has no machiculations!!!!
Its adorable how much fun hes having testing it out
Also this is gonna help with my cosplay.
I think another reason why the wood chopping axes kept on slipping out was that the loop was twisting, not the axe itself. The back blade of Kratos' axe prevented the loop from twisting. Maybe a leather belt around the chest would prevent the shoulder belt from twisting, thus keeping the loop in place and preventing the axe from slipping out.
All the same, I'm loving the videos dedicated to properly experimenting with the back carry. So often these are dismissed as just impractical or impossible without trying it out first, happy to see that there is an actually practical method!
From now on, every fantasy hero must use the axe hook. It needs to be a convention.
I'm slightly behind but I think this new design illustrates more what I was thinking when I was looking at Kratos Device of the horse shoe hooked onto his Pauldron was that it was designed more to hold it by the head of the axe rather than the haft of it as it's portrayed in the game. Then again it may be portrayed that way in the game due to graphics or something rather than thought about how it's being held. The Axe on Kratos probably should have realistically sat just a little bit lower in the hangar.
The "I'm a professional" killed me! XD
Very Cool! I have some ideas for improvement:
1. Use something similar to a shoulder strap to keep the axe's position more secure. [the belt moves around too much.]
2. Angle the hook down at 30 degrees. [horizontally - not 30 degrees from your back]
3. Bend the bottom of the hook [including the prongs] up at an angle of 30 degrees.
4. Place a clamping hook [a narrow hook that will hold whatever is put in it by squeezing it] on your belt so that you may slide the axe handle into the hook, thus holding the axe handle in place. Make sure the clamp isn't too tight, otherwise it will be too hard to remove the handle. This should stop the axe from moving around so much.
If he adds a clamp on his belt then he wont be able to bend over without it popping out.
No sir, thank you for having fun sharing it with us
I love this design. I have a wood chopping axe since I live in the country, but I don't tend to go too far with it. However, I might just try crafting this so I can feel like a bad ass! Hah.
Horowitz You need a bearded felling axe... :P
or maybe he could make some kind of X leather strap on it that holds an extra bit behind the axe so it become like a bearded axe
oddly enough I have a bunch of wood cutting axes as I also live in the country. This is odd as the guy I buy wood from always sends it in pre split and sized properly. So I guess axes really are inherent to living in the country?
Wouldn't this actually make you a bad axe?
well if you cut your own wood like our family you would need an axe.
That intro is meme worthy.
I have been here for a long time, taking notes and using so much of your stuff to slowly build a fantasy world. Thank you very much for your awesome input Shad.
That may be the most adorable thief I’ve ever seen.
I have to say, I'm impressed. I think the next step in this evolution would mean delving into some leather crafting. Turn the simple belt into a more elaborate harness. A strap across the chest and over the left shoulder might help with sagging under weight, and like you said, being able to link the shoulder belt and waist belt would stop it from slipping.
I was about to comment, a 3-way belt (and more tightened) would be better to holding, not to mention Kratos has the shoulder-pads, which give a bigger surface area for the axe to weight it down and don't feel as heavy.
OR
instead of a 3-way, have the belt go under your armpits (like Kratos does in his default armor), it even has some fur to not make the leather hurt the skin too much and damper a bit the stress.
ALSO
for me it looks like Kratos uses the same principle as the hand of lego hands, since the holder is made of metal, it can flex on stress and allow the axe to be pulled (after all, Kratos IS strong) and it kinda looks like he puts it back by inserting the thinner part first
AND
it looks like, at least to me, that the is manly hold in place by friction and stress of the "horse shoe" being in an angle, but that could be more to a game design option so you can see the runes you apply to the axe while walking in the world
I think that a Sam Browne design for the belt might work well enough, or at least better. Instead of looping the cross belt under the waist belt you would attach it be either stitching it to the waist belt or putting a couple of rings on the waist belt and having the cross belt attach to the rings.
Another idea is to add another belt to the cross belt that attaches to the other side of the waist belt. It would look sort of like an upside down Y that's slanted.
That "horseshoe" design is a Greek "omega" sigil or glyph.
Dranen Stormwright, it's not a sigil or glyph, it's a letter of the Greek alphabet and a number, specifically the last one (and also in uppercase and the number 800) and can signify the end of something, Like in the biblical statement: I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
Honestly the way Kratos hook lays flat means the hook tightens to an angled oval cross section of the shaft with the weight of the axe pulling it down. Once you lift the weight off the ring it would be easy to remove again. Similar to the hooks they sell to hang brooms by the handle in a closet
13:15 it's all about the spin.if you practice enough you can use the momentum to get it where it needs to be without actually having to use your strength. It just takes practice and knowing where
You over complicated it just a little bit... You actually do need a shape and angle like the one in the game. Look at the shape of the Axe handle. It's wider near the head of the Axe, then it is further down the handle. Because of this, the opening of the hook only needs to be a slight bit smaller then the widest part of the handle. Also having it at and upward, or even a strait out angle is a disadvantage because it's failing to lock in place. Yes that sounds crazy, but it's true. If you were to have the hook at a downward angle like Kratos has, then the weight combined with the angle and the shape of the hook would cause the Axe to lock into place. I used to have a necklace that locked the same way. The *C* shaped hooks on it were flush with the back of my neck, but because of the weight of the pendant it never came undone unless I touched it. So the design that Kratos has in game, should be very efficient (especially because it is angled slightly away from his body, so it would be easier to catch when placing the Axe). Simply lower the Axe into place and it should be locked in no problem. And more easily removed with out having to rotate it in odd angles.
Edit: Also Kratos Axe has a cylindrical handle, unlike the flat handle of the Axe that you've created. This means with the current hook design your Axe is more likely to be knocked out of place by a simple turn.
Um... Sorry, I tend to babble at times.
Wouldn't a cylinder as a handle mean you can't index it by feel?
@@ShadowsOfEssence Do you mean lock it in place by feel!?! If that's what you mean, then I don't think so. The cylindrical handle shouldn't be a hindrance. Also if it's a proper fit, you should only have to lift very slightly out to remove it from the hook. However, it would definitely take trial and error to figure it out. But that's how you learn everything, trial and error... The hook it's being placed into is a tight *C* shape, therefor the handle should be round as well in order for it to lock in place. It's kind of like the old saying, "Trying to fit a square peg into a round hole." The axe created is; flat, kind of oval in shape and much-much smaller then the widest part of the hook. That's why it's knocked lose so easily, it just rotates with movement and is knocked loose... The inside of the hook should be pretty close to the same size and shape as the widest part of the axe, near the head. The opening of the hook should be just a bit smaller then the same place on the handle. The weight of the axe and the fit and shape of the hook, would lock it into the proper place. When walking and moving around normally, it should stay in place no problem. The only time I could think of it coming lose, would be if Kratos had to crouch or crawl, but that's because that would be altering the angle drastically. If crawling the hook would be standing upward and if Kratos made a sudden movement in that position, then the axe might come loose.
@@angelmuggleangel5042 actually I meant index the weapon when fighting. If the part you hold a weapon by is perfectly round you have no idea where the cutting edge is unless you look. Look at any axe handle in the store, they do not have perfect cylinders for the shaft. They are move like ovals or rounded rectangles. The flat part fits right in the crook of you closed hand. Most have additional curves to fit right against your thumb. That way there is only one comfortable way to hold it. You always know where the axe blade is without looking.
@@ShadowsOfEssence Actually, you're right and that does match Kratos' axe. His axe does match your description, meaning the handle is a sort of flat and slightly rounded shape... all but the section near the head. The top (maybe 1/4) of the handle is cylindrical and honestly that's really the perfect amount for what I described. The only part of the handle that would need to be circular, would be at the highest point, in order for it to fit properly and lock into place in the hook. Kratos axe also has a nice curve to it as well as a leather wrapped area to grip. These additions would make it easier for him to tell which way the sharp side of the head is facing while in battle. *;-)*
I can really start to babble sometimes too. It doesn't happen all that often, but it does happen. I contemplated giving you an example in this very reply to your comment. But I first thought: "Wait, I should actually read the bulk of the comment first." After doing that I realized, "Wait, I might actually be able to contribute to this conversation!" Then I started writing this and got so caught up in my babbling that I forgot what your comment was about (sorry).
So after rereading it I decided that, yes you do possess a good point in your argument there, but the beard of the axe is much to far away from the haft of the axe for that to work. You'd need the axe to be pinned to one of the branches of the horseshoe. To get this to work, you'd need to lengthen that limb. Which may or may not work. I haven't tried obviously, I'm busy with college. If anyone could delve into that a bit more it would definitely be a nice touch to the conversation.
Or you could on the other hand, make the beard closer to the handle.
PPPPFFFFFFFTTTTHAAAHAAAAHHHHHAAH!!!!! Sorry. That thought is funny. That could never work. Shad has said that people in history tried to make the axes as heavy as possible without sacrificing it's ability to be wielded properly. And by taking away that part of the axe you would be taking away a significant amount of weight. Not to mention the fact that with the beard closer to the haft you wouldn't be able to drop the axe higher as axe wielders would do when someone got to close. It's completely impractical.
See? I can babble too!
Also: BACK SCABBARD!!!!!
Cutest thief ever.
Shad is missing the secret to being able to lift the axe that size, he needs an epic beard like Kratos
Ah, so that's the secret.
It's just your standard facial-hair Samson variance. Very common in Norse-adjusted mediterranean deity performance metrics ; )
Krator has a BEARDED axe, you need a BEARD to fully wield such an axe.
He should try shouting "BOY!" to get himself into the mindset.

The true great feat here is wearing gambison on a bright Australia Day
It's getting on toward winter there. Maybe it's cooler than it looks?
It is getting to winter, southern hemisphere's seasonal order is summer 1st at the start of each year
It getting winter now in Australia doesn't detract in any way to this feat, with the average temperature in winter still being nearly 15°C.
I envy the 15° average temperatures, as average temps here hover around 30°.
Well if they could wear it during the crusades he'll be fine.
Awesome job on that. I'm making my own this week. The size difference is not the biggest issue with a secure fit, its the fact that the woodcutter axe head doesn't prevent rotation in the hook.
Shadi you've improved the design alot . but everytime you are forgetting a bunch of parameters of the original design. For example try to actually mount the hook (omega sign) on a shoulder guard rather than straps because no matter how tight you do the staps it is still not as stable as the guard. Second , as you mentiond in the video try to give it downwards slope rather than upwards or straight. Third, the hook shouldn't move or dangle in its place it should only flex a little. (Ps: experimentally try to sheathe the axe with your opposite hand and see if that works.)and overall stick to the original design much as you can. Trust me you never know until you give it a shot.

I think better securing the hook to yourself so that the belt itself doesn't twist would help quite a bit more to keeping the real axes from twisting themselves out. But otherwise, nice to see it works so well in general. It's fun to know the concept is fairly sound, and only needs a few details worked out.
Awesome improvement from the last👍 a few needed but ya smashed it this one.

Shad, holy hell I think your segment on “generic action-y things” has to be my favorite gag of yours since “BUT WHAT ABOUT DRAGONS?!”
I swear, your gags manage to be hilarious while still not completely derailing the subject matter, and in the case of Kratos’ hook - it adds to it!
I’m more amazed by the castle in the back!
I am glad to see you've applied a lot of the ideas I suggested in the previous comment, on the previous video :D Great job man! What I would ultimately do, personally, I would craft it out of steel, and stick with the tighter opening idea, but insted, curve the prongs upwards, like a coathanger, maybe make them a little longer. Secure them very well with the belt, so it doesn't just fall out with the belt, and voilla! I think you have a perfect holder for many types of axes!
This was even funnier than the previous one.
Gods damn, Shad, that "special" shirts comertial makes be crack up every time.
I actually want to see more things like this, store weapons more practically, or even sheath weapons like polearms and greatswords with ingenuity, but that would be impossible for me
the only way to store a polearm is to wrap it in leather and leave it in the wagon.
I love the look at it when you pull out, putting it back in is also rather cool when you have to hold up the top but the way you do a half spin after pulling it out just looks badass, tho I bet its not safest way when around a crowd.
You're a fun and light hearted man, I love just how much you enjoy doing this, it's nice ^-^
I know this kind of video is probably a lot more work than you usually put into a video since you usually "only" have to do research and not get physical or build something but I really would like to see more of this kind of video 😃
I hope this doesn't sound like I'm talking down on your other videos. I enjoy your videos no matter the format ☺
Now you need to add a Back Axes shirt to the store.
A second note about the other problem you were having with the axe hook/holster/sheath or whatever, the sliding problem is solved with it being attached to the shoulder armour. And the thing with the holstering method, the piece that holds the axe is slightly flexible and he uses the momentum from swinging the axe from attacking position to sheath. Then there is also the fact that it’s made out of some kind of metal. Like I said the last time, I love the videos. Keep up the good work.
I discovered your channel yesterday. And now I’m 6 videos deep. These are just fantastic!
You having so much fun doing this makes this really fun
I'm so impressed how much thought went to the Ingame design of the holder. When I saw this in the game, I thought that it is the God of War omega, like everyone else did.
Seeing your videos made me realize, that almost everything in this design has a purpose.
Awesome! It actually works! Fantastic video mate!
Constructive Criticism: Modern utility axes from a Home Depot, Lowes or something similar need a different hook design due to the difference in the axe head. Also, the hook on Kratos is attached to his shoulder pad which is FAR MORE secure than your belt as your hook slides up and down your back, so you really need to find a way to secure the hook to where it remains in the same spot on your back. Not easy I know, but yeah
Oh....one more thing, you missed an ample opportunity for Kratos, "GIRL" shout out there, you could have even added some edited voice over.
In a few of the better made three-point tactical slings for gun holsters the ends of the main over the shoulder belt are looped and attach (front and back accordingly) to your main pants belt. Then typically there is a secondary over the other shoulder belt attached midway on the main over the shoulder belt.
I love that you go back to improve your Design.. this is pretty badass.. awesome😀
THAH WAS THE DESIGN I RECOMMENDED!!!! thankyou for trying it out! it is great to see that my comment was useful for something :D
I love how much fun you have in your videos
Excellent video! Thank you!
