      It's a tricky thing for adventurers because you cannot effectively wear both this and a pack. Thus, some may still prefer traditional side scabbards so they can wear a backpack and carry equipment there.

    • @NobodyCares56
      @NobodyCares56 3 года назад +5

      Is there really no historical evidence for scabbards like these? I get that "practical for adventuring" wasn't exactly a real benefit to be considered when designing equipment in medieval society, but all the materials that went into this one sound like they could have been feasibly recreated back then and the benefits still would have been worthwhile in some situations.

    • @vorrnth8734
      @vorrnth8734 3 года назад +5

      @@NobodyCares56 The problem is that this shabbard is actually not very practical for traveling. I would rather have a backpack with my stuff on my back.

    • @dilen754
      @dilen754 3 года назад +15

      There are two problems:
      1. In reality there wasn't such thing as "adventuring". No need to go in a small group with battlefield level weapons. When you just travel you only need some self-defence weapon. If you march to war - there are carts and horses and everything.
      2. Not fully enclosed scabbard is rather bad in wet weather - rain, fog, snow. It's not just problem of actual water falling inside scabbard, it's the moisture in the air. Though there are ways to work around it, there is the point 1 that makes work rather pointless.

    • @disturbedcanon4765
      @disturbedcanon4765 3 года назад +16

      @@NobodyCares56 it comes down to the intended purpose. In medieval times the average person carrying around a greatsword that might benefit from this wouldn't need to draw the sword quickly. It is more practical to have a weatherproof scabbard attached to your pack because if you need the sword then you almost definitely will have time to get it. Fantasy characters have back scabbards because they need to be battle ready at all times. They can't waste precious seconds taking off their backpack.
      Also, most people with a sword had a longsword or bastard sword, either exclusively or in addition to a larger sword. This kind of sword is more practical to keep on the hip for weather protection purposes. A hip scabbard is nearly rain proof (you would still want to cover it as much as possible and oil the sword frequently. They didn't exactly have waterproof plastic), and a hip scabbard allows you to wear a cloak to keep yourself and your equipment dry.
      Essentially, this scabbard is awesome if you need to have quick access to your greatsword, but medieval people didn't need that. This scabbard can be frustrating if it rains or you cross a stream, which are situations that medieval people had to deal with.
      Also, I love this scabbard and I want 2, one in black 🖤

      @@apostle602gmail I don't think so. It's very practical to use the shabbard, because the normal scabbard on the back does not work and they have to fake it to make it look as if it's working. You don't need to fake anything with a shabbard. Being able to show the sheathing or unsheathing with a working scabbard/shabbard is way cooler than having to fake it and cut inbetween or hiding the scabbard from the camera during the motion of faked sheathing or unsheathing.
      It makes the whole back-scabbard thing a lot cooler this way and because it does so, it will be used in film and video games as soon as concept of the shabbard is known to the people in charge for weapon design.
      The shabbard will prevail because it's a lot cooler than the non-functioning back-scabbard. The "rule of cool" will make it happen.

    Would be interesting to find a way to make the wing able to fold over at the top so you could use it as a normal scabbard or fasten it to your back with the wing open for use on the back.

    • @Buphido
      @Buphido 11 месяцев назад

      That’s what I thought as well. There are certain special hinges that can stiffen in specific positions, so give the flap hinges that stiffen in the open position and you have a shabbard that can be opened when you want to be ready to draw and closed for travel and protection of the sword from the elements.

      It would not work in the north simply because of rain and snow or to make it work you would need to be very careful to not make it rust.
      It is fine for fantasy it however is not great for real-world situations everywhere.
      If you at all think about rust prevention open-faced back scabbard is not a good idea (you also want the end hollow to get water out of there)

    • @havtor007
      @havtor007 3 года назад

      @asdrubale bisanzio That is fine if you are not intending to move around with it. if you are a flap will not hinder rain at all what so ever, Wool is also very absorbent and keeps moisture for quite a decent amount of time
      To make the flap secure enough that you can move around with it without getting rain in you have effectively made a normal scabbard on the back
      You also can not have the flap be in the way of sheathing the sword making it harder to place but i do think it is possible
      For it to not affect the unsheathing part it needs to be lose enough that you are just pushing it away and not cut in to it, nah i just see a lot of problems with using a flap.
      I see to many problems with a flap and a sharp blade.
      Again what is made here is fine in fantasy it just has some flaws in "real world" applications.
