Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Sword Scabbard!

- Опубликовано: 24 янв 2023
- Adam's assassin's sword finds its new home in this custom carved sheath! And while Adam has made scabbards for almost all of his blade builds, this is the first that he's done as a One Day Build--and perhaps his most satisfying yet. From carving the wool-lined wood to perfectly fit the blade shaping the brass fittings, Adam is most pleased with his sword finally completed!

Adam, sir I wish I had 1/10th of your budget for new toys... err tools, however I noticed you are using American Aircraft metal shears. Get yourself of Original Gilbow metal Shears Made in Sheffield, England- I have 3 pairs, 8", 10" and 14". They are the Dogs Bollox of sheet metal cutters and you will never touch those American aviator things again. Gilbow Shears are the best in the world- ask any sheet metalworker, shipwright or anyone worth their salt in the sheet metal industry.
38:27 What brand exacto knife is this? Please.
this is a great video that shows how i should go about making the scabbard for the conan inspired sword I forged.
Adam - next time you come to New Zealand, you gotta try sheep shearing. Serious! The smell of fresh-shorn wool is unforgettable.
I'm unsubscribing. I can't do the "rich worship" thing anymore. It's not cool.
Adam Savage carrying a sword while riding a one-wheel is the most San Francisco thing I can think of.
Nah, the most San Francisco is the same scene - except he's coming at you out of the fog!
They still have fog I hope? Not been back for a few years.
Visualizing this brought me much joy.
So san francisco is where i wanna live....good to know.
Don’t forget annoying all of us in the Tahoe region
I thought feces and needle covered streets were?
I laughed out loud hearing Adam talk about staring at the sword at night. Such a uniquely Adam thing to say that so casually
It’s very understandable, I’ve also stared at things I’ve been working on to the point I question my sanity.
I do it to my wip props all the time whenever I have to stop and give it a few days because I'm not sure how to proceed with color or greeblies or whatnot.
Don't all makers stare at the item they completed and feel really proud about? Obsessively?
Deadpool "I'm touching myself tonight" energy
Yeah, nothing unique about that man, haha! most artists and crafters do exactly this.
That (going home rather than pushing on) was the essence of experience and craftspersonship. Not in doing things perfectly, as everyone will always make mistakes, but in knowing yourself well enough to stop before you do.
Craftspersonship? The way you people are mangling your language just for the sake of "political correctness" would have been funny if it wasn't so pathetic. Americans... 🙄🤦♂️🤣
Craftpersonship?? Are we going to start saying personkind?
I made a number of scabbards for broadswords a number of years ago - when the build was close to done I started coating the blade with graphite the sliding it in. This showed where it was rubbing most on the way in and where we needed to shave away a little more without overdoing areas that didn't need it.
Hope this helps!
Great idea! Chalk for a chalk line would probably also work
@@alexstarr1589
Yup. Or even drawing charcoal would work.
Hey Adam, next time you make a sheath you should get together with Todd Cutler from Todd's Workshop! He makes historical recreations of weapons. He has an incredible wealth of knowledge and I would love to see the two of you together!
+1
a router plane would have done wonders on the inside of this. Router planes are a very interesting hand tool too.
i was about to comment this same thing !
As an old school carpenter, i endorse this comment. Accept this 'like'. 👍
Was gonna say the same, I’d use my 71 for that.
I had never heard of this tool, now I've looked it up I want one!
Take a piece of wood, drill a couple holes side x side at an angle, push that same chisel into the holes, bevel down, to necessary depth, wah lah poor man's router plane. Look up Paul Sellers Poor Man's Router Plane, thank us later Adam!
And now, with adam telling me the story, this is the wierdest interaction i've ever had with the song "Brandy".
Thank you.
56 seconds up and it appears in my youtube recomend, excellent service youtube
Adam Savage: Bringing OLD meaning to "Open Carry".
I can picture you tooling (heh) down the street on that One Wheel, sword in hand, helmet on. Maybe a backpack or satchel on. And then after the cops see you go by one of them says, "Aw-man. Those props he makes look so real."
Back in the eighties there used to be a fellow that I frequently saw walking in the Capital Hill area of Seattle, or practicing with it in a local park. I think it was a two hander and he had it sheathed on his back.
Always saw him by his self, never saw anyone hassling him, it was just the individualist kind of thing seen in some Seattle neighborhoods at the time, like the chewing gum wall, the statues of a group of people waiting for a trolley that people would dress up for winter, events, and such, and the troll under the Hwy 99 bridge clutching a VW Beatle.
I feel a deep kinship with that Brandy guy. That's exactly the kind of humor I've been know to engage in from time to time.
Thank you for the story about the song brandy, of course it came on Spotify 5 minutes before the start of this video
Didn't know Adam likes The Decemberists. I love listening to their music while I'm welding!
Suit of armor, check! Sword, check! Trusty steed, check! 😁👍
Adam running his fingers along a blade always makes my skin crawl a little
The Brandy anecdote reminds me of the time, recently, that I came to the realization that "Patty your land turns" was actually "Patio Lanterns".
Outwardly realizing that fact while among a group of people made for a good laugh for all of us.
I like how this thoughtful sentence about gaining experience through repetitive processing ended with "when you build weird shit!"!
This was absolutely one of the more satisfying builds for me to watch that you have ever done. Thank you so much good sir, you are such an enviable craftsman.
Something about swords really speak to a primal part of my brain. Holding one has never not felt great.
Adam: "It comes from an intuition you get from building weird shit".
Me sitting here whipping medieval arrows: *nods*.
I Friggin' love Sword Phase!
That CA Glue shot made me feel many, complicated things as a fellow maker. Utterly satisfying.
I could tell by the sound of his knife on the "lamb's wool" that it was synthetic. Wild.
I hope Peter sees these videos and they make him happy the skills are making you so happy.
I was testing my Gopro with an automatic Gimbal from the sunroof in my car in Seattle at the end of February 2020 when the song Brandy came on. A week later Covid and the new future happened. I watch that video on occasion as a nostalgic BC (before Covid) moment. That's my Brandy story.
Sticking with the movie theme, you should make that sword somehow make a "shhhhink!" sound when you pull it out of the scabbard, haha.
Nails on the chalkboard! No metal to metal contact, ideally.
Chisel work is all about patience... you gotta have to have right state of mind for it.
LOVE the Decemberists
It's not a phase 😄 All swords, all the time is just the best way to live!
I love the childlike glee whenever you pick up the sword it's just a joy to watch, thanks for doing this build Adam!
Edit: apparently I can't spell...
So satisfying watching him wrap the scabbard in leather
34:27 +10/10 on the one-handed technique to open the C-Clamp. -10/10 for leaving a brass-free tip on the scabbard.
How Adam has not lost multiple fingers using all those machines over decades is beyond me. A skill unto itself.
I finished a wood sword for my niece today. I used a playlist of all the Tested sword videos as inspiration. Peter Lyon, the Hero Sword, and scabbard builds were great sources for tips and cherry-picking design ideas. Thanks for the help and for being a voice in the background these last two months.
That sword is awesome. You should be proud .
Mr. Savage, your style brings joy to my life. Thank you.
Build looks fantastic! I know wasn't the objective of the build, but i'd love to see Adam's interpretation of a functional back-sheath.
I'm glad the recurring background hum isn't ACTUALLY just me going insane.
Drink whenever Adam says the word "Scabbard" !!
You SHOULD be proud of that sword!
Beautiful sheath. And to see one done properly and not just a little bit of felt and leather but an actual wood scabbard is freaking amazing Great work Adam
That Thumbnail is just so awesome! 💪😘
Grace cathedral hill!! One of my favorite songs of all time
Love the music during the contact cement sequence!
I literally love EVRYTHING about this sword and its scabbard. Great work Adam.
Thank you , Adam for this video 🙂 ☺️ 👍🏻👍🏻 !!!
That is an amazing point of balance for that sword, right on the riccaso ❤
If there were ever a zombie apocalypse this is the man you want helping you.
Love watching Adam work.
can i just say again and i'm sure you've heard it a million times per video but thanks again for just letting us hang around all this time. It really does feel like you make accommodations for us to be here. AND it IS oddly meditative!
I love how Pumped Adam gets
Beautiful work sir nice adam you are awesome, sir. Thanks for sharing another video
This was awesome, Adam!!!
❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Adam I love the song too! Excellent story!
"Alexa, play Grace Catchedral Hill by The Decemberists" i love you, Adam.
If nothing else, I'm constantly fascinated with the number of tools you have. Not only do you seem to have one for every job, you know how to use them and when. Great stuff.
Nothing wrong with being impressed with yourself! I know I was. Inspiring as always, Adam!
I learned the hard way that chiseling out a scabbard for a lightsaber katana, ended up buying a set of bent neck chisels which makes my life a lot easier ( and then I fashioned a jig together and just routed it out because the scabbards were sitting on my bench for about 6 months ignored. Absolutely wonderful to see Adam go through the same process haha.
Chiseling is definitely a totally consuming process like that.
Kudos to you Adam for adapting my suggestion. The capstone looks much better and fits the story of the design much better.
43:30 - I've made some of these for my small squadron of giant guard chickens on my volcano island. Nobody has broken through the defenses yet. Thanks Adam!
In 04, my x and myself were in San Francisco in September and passed the studio you talk of.
Visited the Presidio, and stood on the Golden gate and the Rock. Lol 😆
Even got sunburnt on the one arm, yes you guessed it, the right arm.
Enjoy watching you. Used to make swords and scale vehicles. Just about anything. Got an unknown muscle condition all my fingers are out of place. Miss making stuff but love watching others enjoy it. Thank you for sharing.
this sword build is my favorite thing on youtube right now.
Before you started the build, I was thinking tanned leather with brass fittings was the only way to go.
Haha! Great minds think alike. 🤔 😁
Is/ was...
I hate mistakes
Sorry
Absolutely gorgeous!
Adam, I love your work! thanks for all you have done but what I love the most is your personality, the way you think, see... I'm an ESL teacher from Guyana who lives in Brazil and I too have the same thinking process as you do, it's crazy in our heads so thanks for being yourself, and I hope to see you on VFX reacts again.
Man, that is so beautiful!! I’ve never built anything like that before but I loved watching you do it! I feel inspired, thank you for everything!
Bless you sir, i am not that patient or willing to pound a chisel for an afternoon. I would have used my laminate router to do the bulk of the cutting and fine tuned it after. I'm sure this option crossed your mind, but your inner craftsman screamed "Hell no! do it right!"
Awesome that you just went with hand tools. I love modern technology to make work faster and easier, but hand tools.... So satisfying. Cheers!
Adam I just have to say thank you, you are one of the main reason when I decided to go to college I decided on machine tool technologies and I'm now learning to use CNC machine and I can't be happier so thank you and maybe one do I'll have something cool for you to look at
I'm about to start working on a wooden sword based off of Adam's WETA Workshop build. I was really hoping he had a scabbard video and, well......the man delivers.😊
5:38 I had this same experience at work with the song "Stop the Cavalry", which is like a Christmas classic in the UK but word for word it's like "Churchill, stop the fighting plz"
Super satisfying watching Adam chisel, but I knew he was going to mill it out
That is a magnificent sword. Well done! I'd carry it around to stare at it too. You nailed the Middle Earth aesthetic while making a unique but useable looking weapon. Super cool! I love seeing scabbard builds- people often ignore the scabbard but it's an engineered work of art itself.
Happiness is a cool sword.
I really love that sword Adam!
I just went back and listened to "Brandy (You're a fine girl) and this time paid attention to the lyrics, haha. Never realized the what the song was really about, great song!
You, my friend are in fact the positive part of my brain rendered in body and mind. Thank you for this. It's very hard to stay with it in when your poor and broken for trying. People like us can't stop thinking or trying. It doesn't suit us. AWAYS KEEP TRYING.
Really liked the more chill more chill montage music
ive never noticed how much cleaner adams table it under that pad he normally has in the middle before lol when he completely cleared off the table at the beginning i was shocked lmao
I'm still blown away by Adam's attention to detail.. i guess i just had in my head "he's hollywood" and never did anything in great detail.. still amazed by his work, but never realized it till becoming a member here to tested... kudos my friend.. and i hope i can call you a friend.. 👏🏼
I never thought to do that little c-clamp trick at 34:25. Learned something new!
*absolutely gorgeous sword*
Damn satisfying conclusion. I was worried about that split.
"It's a tool for making square holes!" he says with delight, before immediately proceeding to make the hole no longer square :)
Adam: "You can never pull a sword out of your back"
Shad: "Allow me to introduce myself"
That was amazing.
Request to the editing team, the pneumatic tools in this were quite loud when I had the volume up enough to hear Adam speak. is there a way to mix the audio so that the louder tools are a little quieter? thank you!
I imagine that coworker at ILM with the Brandy story to be Norm Macdonald.
Along with your Japanese woodworking master, Ted would also be shaking his head at you. Warm up your hide glue before applying...it makes it easier to spread!
I love how much you love that sword :)
A grand job! Can't wait to see the finished tip.....Perhaps more Brass?
Adam, that's a piece that was forged by a smith named Jody Samson. He was a wonderful smith, and made several iconic replicas for Albion. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago.
12:04 Here we go again. Never ever ever ever do this, it’s the most important rule by far when using a chisel: never push it towards your other hand like that.
That’s a mistake no one makes twice.
I love Adam when he is totally excited about *a thing*.
Well, even more than I love Adam any day of the week anyway ;)
As a former HEMA practitioner, I am in love with the balance point on that blade. It gives me a warm fuzzy.
Had to hang up my longsword after I got a titanium plate in my spine lol
I totally relate to that random guy telling you about brandy. It's all about the music for me XD
Please tell me I'm not the only person who gets anxiety going when he's using the exacto knife when carving the top out a bit lol looks awesome though love the sword and scabbard great work
Gorgeous
Still Untitled podcast listeners had already heard the Brandy story in the Spoilercast of Guardians 2. Now that’s a throwback.
I bought this same blade from Albion and built my own sword too! I finished mine last Spring. It's a lovely blade designed by Jody Samson.
