When do you park? | Sunday Rant | Trucking Answers

- Recently there has been a spate of bad weather. On the Sunday Rant I discuss this and ask you when do you park in bad weather? Many companies talk about safety but how many of them back it up with action? Why are so many drivers still driving even though roads are terrible and driving is not recommended? Is a days pay that important? Will you be broke? Drivers need to get parked when roads get icy. Billy Big Riggers may think I'm afraid but I'm not. I'm at home getting paid.

That Werner lawsuit was complete BS. The car lost control & crossed through the median and hit the Werner truck who was going 30mph heading to a truck stop to park. The driver had complete control of their truck. A money hungry lawyer pursued the case. It is currently in Appeal.
Yep. Been driving since 2007. I'm on the extreme, in that I take the winter months off, ... I just don't want to deal with all the close-calls that I've had the first 3 years I drove. One time in the U.P. (Ironwood), due to beyond-heavy snow, I sat at a Walmart for 2.5 days. Company started pressuring me to drive after 24 hrs, but their own policy was "If you don't feel safe on the road, then don't drive."
And if the company let's me go, fine. I can get a job with another company easy. But Mark is on the right track here: If you're struggling financially, you'll drive no matter the conditions. If you're not living paycheck to paycheck, you become a safer driver.
Hauled auto parts to Detroit for 3 years. The loads only had a fine of $10,000 per hour if the line went down. There was always a state snow plow truck to fallow if the lake effect snow was heavy.
The triangles have always been my pet peeve as I used to say on your life show. Everyone clown Swift,, but they’re the only ones that seem to be able to put the triangles out correctly. with as much construction on the road as we all see, you think it would be common sense on what direction to put them out.
I park when the road gets slick
Ive never wrecked or slid off the road in snow or ice
But
On three different occassions I have had cars slide into me by no fault of my own but still the down time
The only thing we can
do is not be there for someone to crash into
I stop when I feel it's not safe. No questions asked.
Mark the problem is to fast for road conditions
Unfortunately, a lot of the drivers are pressured to keep driving in bad weather. Dispatch will say they will get a fine if the load is late or whatever excuse they come up with.. if I don’t feel safe driving I let my boss know. Never had an issue parking when I told him I didn’t feel safe driving
No load is worth the life of anybody so safety is you best desicison always 💯 👌
Truckers and people need to realize that around the Gulf of Mexico, if it freezing in that area, the roads, overpass and the bridges will ice up which means very dangerous. Thank you Mark for bringing this up and we love your podcast
It’s not only the 4 wheelers. My regional route has me regularly running over Donner, Mt Shasta, Mt Ashland & I even occasionally run over the Three Sisters. It amazes me how often I’m running with chains & maintaining a speed of 25mph, speed limit for trucks running with chains in this region is 30mph max because any faster than that the chains are likely to break & impale your tires or spit off into traffic & then litter the Freeway causing road additional road hazards. 🙄
At 25mph I’m able too better maintain complete control of my truck & better control of my downhill speed.
Then every single time there are the SUPER TRUCKERS that will fly by me going faster than the max speed limit for clear nice days when everything is dry & of course they also blow their airhorn at me while flipping me off & screaming obscenities at me.
9 times out of 10 only a few short miles down the road I will see those same trucks either blocking the entire freeway because they jackknifed or they are flipped on their side in the snow bank or ditch. Some drivers both 4 wheelers & truck drivers have absolutely no respect for the current road conditions & are clueless of the consequences because they have ‘I’m so special nothing bad will happen to me syndrome’.
You're 100% correct
Mark, what about Ice Road Truckers 😂? They must think we’re a bunch of Wimps that can’t drive down a huge interstate.
It’s all about the speed man, you will never jackknife going the right Speed, if someone wants to pass you; LET THEM, WHO CARES, so many people today speed-up, then hit the brakes and there’s the pileup. Years ago NOBODY DID THAT!!!
Professional Drivers make their judgment by, The Temperature, How much Weight You Have, and How You feel in the Gut.
This isn’t Ice Road truckers, that’s a specialty, ice on the highway is the worst you can drive in, just no good. Who cares about those Ice road truckers think anyway, they aren’t on a highway with other drivers, good for them!
Exactly
Ice road truckers have equipment made for bad weather... Snow tires and what-not...
For the most part, they're driving on snow pack not ice and they don't even have a fraction of the traffic we have...
What they might see about one or two vehicles on the way through there whole trip... It's a movie man...
Whenever we damn well feel like it! 😂
27 years retired HazmatTanker Yanker with one of the biggest tank line in America . they encouarged/want you to shut down
rule of thumb if you see spray off the tire threads your ok but i always shut down no matter what
I used to haul mail. It all runs on tight schedule. Pony express
Probably a Power Only contractor. We have about a dozen here at the Korean Mafia Phoenix
T8me for me to oark is when the level of control is so bad it scares me, I cant see anything or I get tired...
All drivers should get paid by the hour. There would be so many less wrecks.
Yeah if it’s a blizzard or Ice storm shutting down must be made mandatory and for dence fog too
All the trucks trying to go over donner pass in a snowstorm, are you drivers nuts?
I'm parking in Reno for the day
Too many companies don't care. They're willing to deal with an injury, a smashed truck, a lost load. Why, I don't know? Maybe they have enough money to handle what ever results?
I was listening to hourly pay for truckers being discussed on the trucker radio, Sirius XM channel 146. Many of the callers put on the air said they didn't want to switch from cents per mile to hourly pay (and Overtime!) because the feared it would cut their earnings. I don't have the words to express how duped those callers are. In no other profession do you not get to leave your workplace for weeks at a time, only get paid 70 hours out of a 168 hour week, and get paid more the worse you speed.
Heartland shuts us down when they deam the weather to bad and as a minimum guarantee driver for Smith transport I don't care since I still get paid the same
My opinion is the reason why I drive is run on horrible conditions, the fear of being a terminated, and you're probably going to say well go get a different job. The company has 100 % control of everything. They could put anything on your dac report, I resigned from this company for safety issues. They said I had a bad attitude and rude to management
Please don't let your lot lizard freeze this winter.
Is that a back window insert? Or was it made with no glass?
Mark, I concur, btw, why do you always have cuts on your face?
I don't care the reason, if I don't think, or feel it's safe, I shut down. End of!!
JOHN BOY. WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU EXPECT ?
Nobody cares about safely. It's all about money. Replace the term safer with saves more money
@ WHATEVER IS ON THE BACK OF YOUR MIRRORS IS WHATS ON RHE GROUND 💯👈 1 MILLION SAFE MILES KLLM 💸🤑👈
