  • The Sunday Rant deals with a recent meeting of recruiters and what they were saying. Apparently companies are going to continue to look for drivers and offer jobs that don't exist according to them. They are doing this to keep ready for when business picks up. Don't sit around and wait for them. If they tell you to go home and they will call you or it takes more than a few hours to call you back, move on to somewhere else. If they don't want you, don't beg them to take you. Have more self worth than that. These trucking companies continue to find new ways to disrespect drivers and yet they also continue to wonder why they have such high turnover. Never tolerate this out of a trucking company.

Recruiter: Join our company, we're like family!
Me: I already have a family and they're dysfunctional too.

Why should they care if they hire too many drivers? Truck drivers love to sit for free, waiting on a load.

I have heard more stories of companies telling an orientation class to go home and wait because, they don't have enough trainers!!! I wish I hadn't seen this! I have an interview with a carrier tomorrow and hope it's for a real opening and not to add me to their list!

I went through that with Knights Transportation, they did hire me fresh out trucking school, but they had me sitting waiting for a trainer. I waited one week, and after the second week, I called them and told them that I was done waiting. A week later, they called me and said they had a trainer and said no thank you, I'm not interested.

My youngest just went to work for knight (against hours and hours of me telling him not to)
It took them a month to get him with a trainer.

Recruiting always has to backfill for natural attrition. Your point is correct: don't wait to be hired.
Some temp agencies would consider an application to be a contract despite not being assigned work.
Also, don't take assignments away from your hub yard.

I have one company that calls me every couple months about a position near my home. I told them I would do it then they call me back a day later and say the positions filled. Been going back-and-forth with them for over a year now.🤣

It’s all places I’m going trough this right now it’s honestly just annoying the system is so broken I honestly don’t blame people for sitting on unemployment money anymore if people won’t hire you then well then you’re going to pay me for not working maybe if they were responsible for paying your bills when you applied and they bs you around they should have to pay your bills until they make a decision that will get there attention vary quickly

From experience I can say that unfortunately this tactic is not exclusive to trucking, this is pretty much a common big company trick these days to make it look like they are hiring even if they really are not... And this practice has only gotten even more widespread Ever since beer flu,

Recruiting is its own industry. It is not the trucking industry. Based on how many leads they have and the strategies to get those leads. Recruiting is a polar opposite to retention. If a company could retain drivers. They wouldn't need as many recruiters. There is no incentive to a recruiter if you make a 30 year career out of this job.
But some are shadier than that. That if you dont bite. They sell your info to a 3rd party Recruiting agency.
