Should you give a 2 week notice? | Trucking Answers

  • Should drivers, especially OTR drivers, give a 2 week notice before quitting a company. Hear me when I say this, it is not required by law anywhere. It is just common in all industries. Why? Companies need to replace you so they expect it. Do they give notice to you if they are going to fire you? NO. What is the difference? The most complaints I get about giving two week notice is not that drivers get fired on the spot although that does happen. The biggest problem I get from drivers is they get sat somewhere for most of that time and don't get any miles. Nice and petty from trucking companies to be sure. Also, I have seen where drivers cannot get back to the terminal. They are out 3 and 4 weeks beyond their notice because the company refuses to give them a load back. Can't quit if you aren't back, right? Protect yourself and just quit while you are at a terminal is my advice to most drivers. Take pictures of the truck and take a video with the current paper as proof of the day and show the truck, paper and terminal in one shot to prove it was there on that day. You do not know the problems companies can give you by saying you didn't turn it in. How would you prove it? With the video. Bottom line I believe is for most people to just leave.

10 years ago i gave a 2 week notice to my company. 30 min later i get a message to clean my truck out that they needed it for someone else. i lived 250 miles away. i had to put all my stuff on the curb and wait 4 hours for my wife to come pick me up. Never again.

Depends on.the company and management. When I left Werner Enterprises, I did not give a notice. I read all of the horror stories about people giving two week notices with them and stranding them 1,000 miles away to starve you out of the industry.
I gave them a home time request (2 weeks in advance), and before I left the terminal:
    1. I made sure I was under no load, which I was not.
    2. I took pics of the vehicle, cleaned it out, and did a post trip. I gave the keys to the mechanics, and did not tell anyone at the terminal I was quitting. Went to home terminal.
    3. When I did my check call in the middle of my off time, told them I was not coming back.
I was brought home a day late, but better late than never.
They have hundreds or thousands of new applicants that can replace you for less pay and benefits (replace you in a minute). If they do not give me a two weeks notice before letting me go, WHY SHOULD I? They will notice in two weeks when I am gone!
I checked my DAC after I left and it said, "Eligible for rehire upon review."
Nebraska where Werners headquarters is, is an at will employment state, they can fire you at any time for no reason, and you can quit at any time for no reason.

I gave 2 weeks notice after I accepted a position with another company. The new company sucked big time. Everything the recruiter told me was lies. After a few weeks I called my old company. They told me come on back. They said nobody has touched your truck and we'll do our best to resolve the issues that made you quit in the first place. Best thing I ever did. My old company resolved the issues and now they know that I ain't gonna tolerate BS in the future. I'll probably retire from these guys. Don't burn any bridges because the grass ain't always greener on the other side.
If it's a sh*t company I would wait until I was empty with a full tank of fuel. Head back to your terminal. Just refuse the next load and tell them you're coming home. Sorry, I don't do Grey Hound or fly. I will return to the terminal the same way I left.

I worked for Schneider for 3yrs 2015-2018. They treated me really good I made good miles and home time was good. But when I put in my 2 weeks they tried everything to make me stay up until my last day. I worked a Walmart dedicated account. So in short I think if the company treated me good I’ll give them the courtesy of a 2 week notice.

Yes. I think a two-week notice is more of a "courtesy", that is used for one basic reason. If it was a good company, and you were just looking to better yourself in another position, then you might want to use a two week notice. But if it is a shit company, who didn't treat you right, then why would you want to give a two week notice?
p.s. I quit Prime, with only one week's notice, not because they treated me badly, but like you said Mark, I quit after one week because of fear that they were not going to give me any miles during that period. I gave them only one week, because I figured that was enough time for them to get me back to a terminal

As a small carrier I have respectfully disagree. I’ve been on both sides of the coin. I’ve always given a two week notice unless there was a good reason not to. As a carrier I never want to see a good operator leave. But at the same time I would never treat that individual badly just because he or she turned in a two weeks notice. I’ve always given anyone who gives me a two week notice the option to go ahead and leave unless I already had loads scheduled for them. But I’m also the type of person who puts themselves in the other person’s shoes. I don’t like sitting out on the road so I figure no one else does either! No one is making money if the truck is sitting. I think courtesy and communication go along way for both parties.

Make sure you clean the truck out of all your stuff before quitting, then hand back the keys. I’ve heard of drivers being locked out of the truck with all their stuff in there and being escorted off the property by security or police. The company tells you they will clean out the truck and send you back your stuff. Bullshit!!! You never get back everything you had in there and if they see a nice CB Radio or other piece of equipment they want, they claim it wasn’t there.
So yeah…clean out the truck before you return it. Also top off all the fuel tanks including refer tanks and DEF. Don’t give them any excuse whatsoever to deduct money from your check or withhold your last paycheck. I’d even go so far as having someone for the company come out and inspect it, maintenance if at all possible, and video it so if they say it is good to go you got proof.

  • @SAPPY4HAPPY1

I think to give notice is on a case by case basis. Yes I’m an at will employee and my employer can terminate our relationship at any time without providing reason. But I also have values and that doesn’t always mean stooping down to the level of a soon to be ex employer. I gave 2 weeks notice at an employer because I had a real good working relationship with my dispatcher and I was more concerned about how he was going to handle things once I left than I was the company I was working for. Since we’re ‘at will’ employees, if the company I give notice to decides to retaliate by being petty or making my life hard, I can always say something to the effect of, “I don’t feel like you’re respecting the intent and purpose of the 2 weeks notice I gave you so I will be tendering my resignation today.” I’ll get off my soapbox now.

If it is in At-Will Employer no notice is needed. I learned long ago just wait till you get to your home terminal or yard where the truck is secured. Clean it out then let them know no need to dispatch you anymore. I give the truck back cleaner than I received it. I kept my mattress last company I worked at since it was new. That way If I go back on the road next company does not have to buy a mattress for me.

A 2 week notice is for an office job, where you actually physically SEE and KNOW folks around you... where you actually talk and mayhap share a coffee with a person.
You are in a tin can, weeks at a time.. you work with a PC box that is powerful enough to: On, Off, Sleeper, Driving.... Do not hold any illusions, you are just a cog that directs where the machine is going....
Take charge of your own life, you want to be somewhere else? Do it the best way it suits you. The video/photo advice is about all there it to it - film the truck, park it at the company's yard and that is it.
I am actually very surprised and pleasantly so! to hear a GOOD and REAL advice about this given in a video. A corp is NOT A PERSON, not a human, nor a being of any kind, just an idea.

I think it all depends. If you're on good terms with the company, yeah, do them the courtesy of a 2 week notice. But let's face it, a lot of places (my employer especially) will remind you that employment is at will, they can let you go at the drop of a hat, and you can leave them just the same. If my employer really did me wrong, and I had a plan B ready, need I say more?

Normally I would say yes give notice. However in the trucking industry. Drivers can be mistreated worse by giving notice. If you are going to quit a company. Don't give them any indication that you are quitting. Ask for a home run clear your truck out and then go to the yard. Give your key and the truck over to them and walk. A overnight bag is all you need at that point. Catch a plane or the bus home and start again.

Unspoken truth...company I used to work for...if you gave notice...you would end up wherever they needed a truck...and a bus ticket home...of course you can't get everything you have in a truck on bus...so....you end up either having to do a "fire sale" on your property or giving it away.

For me, I always put in a 2 week notice if possible because I am a professional and that’s what professionals do. If the company are scumbags and my miles dwindle upon my pending departure, that’s another story.

This might be the first video you put out that I agree with without needing to give any thought...
Don't never give them 2 wks notice in this trucking industry. Vast majority of the trucking companies think and treat you like an animal if not a slave. They always want you to do stuff for them for free. They take advantage of you all the time. They lie to you all the time....
They cheat your pay by not paying you all the miles you drove, why would you give them the 2 wks???

If you work for the state of Tennessee hourly employees must give a 2 week notice or you CANNOT be considered for ANY state job ever again. Salary employees are to give a minimum of 30 days but they prefer a 60 day notice or you cannot apply for another state job. When you retire that notice is bumped up to 3 MONTHS !!! That’s over 43,000 employees !

The point about holding up a picture of a newspaper to prove you brought the truck back on a certain day doesn't make any sense because you could be holding up a 3 day old newspaper. Better rethink that one. Maybe film yourself holding your cellphone when it is showing the date and time. Cellphones always show the correct date and time.

it's different in trucking, recruiters in trucking dont mind poaching you while you are driving for another company
I set up my application and got conditionally hired by one company while I was employed by another. I cleaned the truck out and then called the dispatch supervisor to notify of immediate resignation at the terminal.
I was hired and had hotel, uber, and orientation setup with the new co the next hour.
the condition for the hire was that I had to resign, and not get fired, so as far as I could tell it was important for me to give them absolutely 0 notification prior to resignation
