I actually gave a 2 week notice at a diesel shop because of family issues as well and my boss actually paid me what I usually made every 2 weeks right then and there and told me to take care of my family and thanked me for how hard I worked while I was there. I was blown away and will never forget how well I was treated by this owner
After working somewhere for 2 1/2 years, I had psychological issues that were getting bad, so I told my boss I was going to the hospital immediately after work to work on it, and I didn't know when I could come back. Seemed okay with it. It got so bad after a couple weeks I stayed at the hospital for a full day. After a few weeks of it still being severe and knowing I couldn't go back I told him. He hung up the phone and never talked to me again. So if I had cancer, would he still treat me the same way? And for the record, I never collected unemployment, welfare, or anything after I quit, even though I probably could have with the whole covid thing. I have my own business and support myself, I just couldn't work there anymore. One of the hardest working employees there and in the end you just get treated like shit if you have to leave for medical reasons, God I hate that.
Some employers may look at it from a liability standpoint. if you're on the way out anyway, they might just as well be better off having you out of there right away. unless you're their rock-star/lynch-pin, then they might try to squeeze the remaining work from you. but I don't think it would be wise for them to try that.
Yeah, that sounds like the south...When you give notice they tell you can leave now and then they screw you out of your pay check....At Will employees can be fired at anytime, for no reason(except for cases of discrimination.) I learned this the hardway back in the 80's...Since that time, I don't give notice I just leave and have them mail my final paycheck...Employers enjoy telling you that you are employed "at will" and that you can be fired at anytime....I enjoy telling them that "at will" goes both ways and that I can quit at anytime WITHOUT notice or reason...🤔Shalom

Sorry to hear about your experience with the 30 day notice. There are still some good owners out there and a 2 weeks notice is still appreciated. I would say at your new place of employment see how they treat people who give notice. If they treat the person fair and let them finish the notice time. I would say give them notice. I love my employer and I love my job, they take care of you....you take care of them everybody's happy. Nobody leaves If you get shit on and they don't take care of you.....no notice I'm gone

Even a 30 day notice won't stop the exitus of business returning to the shop. Once he leaves half the business is gone, and when he arrives at another shop, it takes about a month for the State and City municipalities to find him, and everyone has twice as much work to do. Everyone is shocked how busy they are doing all this new niche work, ALL the metropolitan law enforcement vehicles, parks department, DNR, USPS, F-450 Ambulance just for Warranty drivetrain, everything except the large firetrucks and garbage trucks. The city has their own large diesel technicians for firetrucks, and they work on the garbage/recycling/compost trucks 🤮⚠️ I'm certain most shops would refuse to work on a garbage truck in the building unless it was power washed entirely! They can't allow that smell to ruin every other customers vehicle ⚠️🤮. Those need their own special facility for maintenance and repair to contain the smells! 80+% of government vehicles are Ford's, the last generation of mail trucks had a lot of Ford Explorer parts underneath, don't understand why nobody else goes and gets that work, Crown Vics, Taurus' Explorers, F-350's, Transit, etc. Enough to fill half the back lot of a good dealership with government contract repairs. It's easy money, don't have to discount the work because a divorced single Mom doesn't have the money, the City and State police will pay their bills! He just retired when the mandatory State shutdown COVID layoffs began, wasn't going to play the unemployment game. Then returned at a different dealership a few months ago, it's easy to tell which of his new co-workers are lazy, they complain about learning how to source the Police Interceptor or fleet service vehicle parts or working on those modified vehicles. They don't want more work, or learn about Ford fleet service vehicles. When they were all in doubt about their own layoffs and getting sick just last year, be happy there is more work now, instead of layoffs.

Now I work on two million dollar locomotive's all tools provided for free. 32.45 an hour and a million dollar retirement in a few more years. Cars suck. My $40.000 dollars in tools can rust to death. If you can fix a car you can fix anything.

You give what you get. If you're doing good honest turns for them and they care less then you already know how it's gonna go. I've given two weeks at a couple places and it was all good. We parted on good terms with mutual respect. One place did jack me around, I collected my last check, listened to their jack around for 5 minutes and left already employed elsewhere and never looked back or returned phone calls. My new employment went well, lasted many years. So I wouldn't let it aggravate you, or dictate how the next one goes. Man the stories I could tell on this subject! In my opinion, these weak service managers and service directors take our notice personal like we worked for the greatest boss😂 Not! Their then firing us at some point in our two weeks is their way of taking back the power and control. Therefore, no notice, I’ll never give them that satisfaction again. I gave a 2 weeks notice at my last auto mechanic job at a Chevrolet dealership. I was gone in 2 days. Enjoyed my time between jobs. That was 11 years ago. Stayed out of auto mechanics and no regrets. Better pay, benefits including retirement.
Having been in the dealership service/parts depts for over 30 years. Seen this more than many times. Good thing about being a good tech. You'll always land on your feet and you pretty much get a instant job wherever you go. P.S..You forgot to mention that sub letting that job to another dealer, if it was warranty..they get paid for the entire job. If it was customer pay, all the profits were lost absorbing the labor time billed by the other dealer.
I didn't give a two weeks notice to my last technician job because the manager would haza people for quitting to go work somewhere else. Making their last 2 weeks there a living hell
I had a friend who started his new job on the same day he started a two week vacation at his old job. He quit on the last day of his two week vacation, having already been at the new job for two weeks. While I don't condone this kind of stuff, I've always thought it really strange that the company expects you to give them two weeks notice when you plan to leave, but when they fire you they'll tell you on the same day while they're escorting you out the door.

I was a parts manager at a dealership I gave them 30days also . A week later H.R & the service manager as back up told me I was being let go and escorted me off the property like a criminal
I never would give 2 weeks notice either. I'm a sales rep though so it's different but too many companies like to screw their employees. Only reason to give one is if you want them to consider re-hiring you in the future but I would rather move on
I work at a major box store and where I work at the evening shift is under staffed and they don't want to pay us overtime and we have to cut it out if they tell us to and I push carts there and they hired a new guy for the closing shift but they need 4 people for the closing shift once I can find something better I won't be telling them that I'm giving them 2 weeks notice because 2 people I know who where part time they cut there hours way down and I'm full time
I once worked for an employer, gave my two weeks notice as required, and he fired me on the spot. I went and applied for unemployment, and he had to pay because he did not honor the two weeks notice. That was many years ago, and through that experience I learned that you owe your employer no notice. There is not such thing as employer loyalty. I have yet, in my 65 years, to meet any employer who gives a worker a two week notice that they intend to fire them. I thought your 30 day notice was extremely generous.
The "courtesy" of giving a notice and allowing the employer time to find a replacement used to be a gentleman's agreement that that employer would give you a good referral to future employers. If you have ever called to get a referral these days for someone you want to hire, most companies will only confirm employment dates because anything else said opens them up to liable. If an employer wants to badmouth you, a notice or not won't change anything. Once you are gone, whether you gave notice and trained your replacement or not will make little to no difference. Generally I recommend to not burn bridges because you never know if it will come back and haunt you but always be smart (quit on a payday, burn all your vacation and PTO before notice, get all personal items out of work before giving notice, etc.), have a plan for separation, and try to keep emotion out of it.
Generally speaking, you are correct as you know. It's how well do you know your employer, and when you see them treat others poorly that's a good sign they are not who you want to work for. Working for the other guy is a compromise at best.
And remember that when you give notice, your employer doesn't have to accept the 2 weeks, they can simply say that won't be required, your last day is today.

That's the company. People forget about the actual person they worked under. "Work history" is where you worked. "References" are people you asked. I still get calls from former employee's perspective new employers even though I no longer work at the same place either. If somebody left me hanging with no notice, they know better than to ask me.
I actually kinda love this story. We fired the only guy we have that can do this work,and now we have nobody to train our guys how to do it properly. It sucks you got screwed over,but they screwed themselves even harder.

I quit a job once. Boss was a great man but I was ready to move onto other things. We still get together once in a while and text on a regular basis and I've given him a hand a few times through the last 10 years.

As professional mechanic myself, I will add you never do work for a shop off the clock. The shop comes to expect it from you as well as any other techs employed at that business. If you get hurt during working off the clock, you can be denied workers comp. Also 90% of the time the shop won’t reciprocate any benefits to you for putting in the extra effort. Don’t ever use your hard earned skills for free, except for family or friends.
The "technician shortage" is caused by both the business and the technician. Example; about 2 years ago I stopped in at a local bagel store. A worker asked me what we pay. When I told her the average depending on experience and knowledge, she told me her boyfriend was making 6.00 per hour less than I was paying trainees. He supposedly had 6 years experience. I told her to send him down but he never showed. When I asked her why, she told me that he was afraid to leave as they liked him. I said, if they liked him so much why aren't they paying him?

Pay one decently, on a day shift, weekends off, and you will have many more applicants. With a whole lot less employee turnover. Strange concept, but it just might work......
This is correct for any at will employment. This is also why I don't give notices as well. The way I see it is, if they don't have to give me a two week firing notice, then why give them a two week quitting notice? Good video!
They need me to make them money but I don't need them to make them money. You belong in a shop where you're a one man show, like me, and get to call the shots on everything. It took years of paying dues as a dealership tech to get to this point.
It's not for the company, it's for management. If you respect your manager and you are confident they are ethical people who have a track record of treating you and others fairly, then a notice is appropriate, if not? ......fuck em.
Not at an auto shop but, When I was 15 years old I worked for a 4 star restaurant washing dishes. There were some very nasty things that went on in the kitchen. I ended up giving 2 weeks notice and was let go on the spot. I asked for my pay and the owner refused to pay me. I called up the local fox news investigators to tell them my story and how messed up the kitchen was. They came out to the restaurant and interviewed me out front while I told all of the patrons coming in all of the horror stories of the kitchen. The owner ended up coming out front to "buy me off". While he was paying me out front to get me to shut up and leave, the news team slipped in through the back and filmed all of the nasty shit in the kitchen and ended up airing the story the next day. Ultimately the restaurant ended up closing down from the news story and I ended up with $300 more than my paycheck should have been from his hush money.
The guy I worked for at a small furniture store in Italy for about 5 years, when I had to go back to Romania to deal with some family problems and a funeral, i gave him a 2 week notice and he paid me for all my hours, asked when I would return. I told him that I wasn't sure,2 months or 3 . He then decided to pay me what I was making normally for the time i was going to not work and told me that he will be waiting for my return and he wished me all the good with my trip. I was in tears. I end up returning after 3 months and he had hired a friend of mine to help, as a temp and after my return he end up keeping for over 2 years as my helper. Best boss I ever had.
Years ago a friend of ours who was a mechanic ran into a situation where the dealer failed to pay in his social security, even though it was deducted every paycheck. The dealer claimed that the mechanic was a contract/1099 employee. Well, the mechanic had kept all his pay stubs, W2's, etc and proved that the dealer failed to pay it in. Well in the end the dealer had to pay in all the missing Social Security payments, plus the interest it was supposed to have gotten, plus a penalty, plus a bonus for the amount of delay they had caused the mechanic in retiring. The dealer nearly lost his franchise by playing fast and loose with his payroll/book keeping system. After the SSA got done with him, the IRS went to town going back to see what else he might have pulled.
I worked for a dealer and his family. They were so tight with payroll and no one could get a raise and even the book keeper complained. I told her if these people could get you to work for nothing they would. They thought that they were superior beings....Not!
Yup I'd drop a job in a heartbeat for family, no question about it no matter how much time I had in the place. 15yrs at my current job, and I'd skip tomorrow if I had to for family. Doesn't need to happen that way for me, my jobs been more then helpful for situations already.

I love the arrogance of managers and especially business owners crying "where's my two week notice?", to which I answer back "If you were to terminate my employment, would you give me two week notice? You're not too bright and you have no idea about how a business runs nor what it's like to pay employees...If you fire somebody with a two week notice, you, as a business owner, could be liable for any damages the outgoing employee may cause...If you can't see the difference between the two week notice, in appreciation of being trained and salary for your time there and not to inconvenience anyone...In my company; I don't take two week notices; if someone wants to quit...SEE YA! I don't want to spend another moment with someone that doesn't want to work for me.

I worked as a tech at a support center and we learn over the years, you give them 2 seconds notice when you quit. If you give them 2 weeks, you will be let go by the end of the day. This is because of the sensitive info you are around. The last job I gave 2 seconds notice. I remember saying, yeah, I quit, I am tired of your BS and your verbal abuse. In a much better job today.
Not necessarily. I worked in an office between mechanic jobs writing service manuals for the military. I got a great offer to get back in the business but I was in the middle of my project. Told the new place I need to finish stuff before I can come. So I kept working for another two months, then gave my two week notice. They actually let me finish most of the two weeks till my project was done. Then I walked. I agree most were walked out same day but if they need you, they will keep you for every last drop of work they can get from you.
Used to be a Team Lead in IT for a major Bank. Policy was if an employee moves on to another financial company, Security walks them out that day. One of my guys gives notice and ... nothing happens. The next day, nothing happens until the end of day and Security walk him out and take away all access. He was key to a major project so I invited him back to the company as a "guest" to provide the updates we needed. Parted on good terms. 5 years later, he gets re-hired and moves up to a VP position!

When I started working at 15 my mother told me to keep a years salary back and earmarked for a O crap fund. I kept bumping it up as my pay went up, then 2020 happened. I was so glad I had listened to her advice.
As a construction welder, I always said, "They don't give you notice when they decide to lay you off. They don't get any notice when I feel the need to leave."
The reason they don't give you two week notice is because people get too emotional and can cause trouble, destroying stuff, stealing, ECT... You will understand this issue when you will have your own business and employees. Majority won't do it, but few bad apples will.
Had a female boss on her rags lose her crap at one guy, for something her sister did, and she fired him. They lost 5 workers that day in a show of solidarity. 2 days later everybody was reinstated with raises lmao
I’ve seen this done many times, at multiple companies. Companies expect notice, but they punish you for giving it. Companies almost never give you notice, so it’s a very one-sided deal they expect.

Two days after my notice the manager tried to get me to stay but refused to negotiate or rectify the issues why i was leaving . He then got tough and demanded that i was legally obligated to provide 2 weeks . Owners and managers think they are above us but truth be told they wouldn't have a job or business without us . I had something similar happen to me except I was a tattoo artist working in a shop. I had rented a place of my own and been secretly stock piling supplies and getting everything ready to open my own shop for a about 3 months. Glad I did wait to give my notice till I was totally prepared to open. The day my health permit was ok'ed I told the owner I was leaving and gave her a couple weeks notice. She fired me on the spot and told the receptionist not to pay me out the 3 or 400 I had made that day. I was the only artist working that night and had a shop full of people waiting so I told everyone to follow me and I would do all their stuff for half price. Lol gave me a nice little head start on business
Years ago I was hired by a drilling company to bring a certain client aboard who I had done work for years. Three holes from completion I was terminated. I called the quarry manager telling him I wouldn't be back to finish up and would he consider hiring me if I got my own drill rig. In 2004 I bought a used rig, took the client away from my former employer. After a move to California for a few years during a slow time, I returned and took the client away from them again. I just finished a contract with the client worth almost a quarter of a million dollars for 2 months work. Not too bad for a one man show. I got fired and damn glad I did.

Wish it was like that in TX. Finally got my $$$, but it was almost 2yrs out, and the temp agency just shuttered and changed their name. Apparently a bunch of people just quit fighting so they "won" big in the end. I know because the fktards under the new name tried calling me up to work another job. No doubt have flipped multiple times since then. Unbelievable.

I am an independent dealer and in 66 years we have never done anything like you have experienced. Minnesota state law would also not let it happen. Good independent shops just have more respect for their employees.
respect is going away at light speed in this industry . The almighty dollar is all most shops care about. Work harder, less breaks, shorter lunches, no matter the temp outside. Im in south east Texas, yes its Hot!. im good to about 100 degrees any higher i slow down. my slow down is 60 hours a week instead of 80 plus. but i was treated like i was goofing off even tho i had more hours than everyone . at that time i was 49 years old I"ve had a major heart attack 3 stints , a quadruple bypass a year after the stints and was still top dog in the shop. but they kept pushing me and pushing me in 108 temps . i think they were trying to kill me lol.

I will add one thing that I learned about car dealers and others of their ilk many years ago. Not only do you, not give them notification, but you get your paycheck and go to the bank and cash it first before you quit. I worked for car dealerships for almost 30 years in various positions from sales to finance and service departments. When I first started in the industry, my sales manager took me aside one day and gave this same advice. That was way back in 1973. It saved my bacon several times over. I’m 73 Years Old now. Which is VERY stupid. Successful dealerships make the majority of their profit from the service department. You want to make sure that you do everything possible that you have return customers. In the sale, you introduce the service managers to the buyers. You build service packages and don't make them like all the hidden fees (straight up, lose these... customer trust equals repeat business and referrals.) Customer service equals steady income. Great mechanics fix it once and the customer is happy. If they have to bring it back in because you did not verify that the balance of a tire was correct after you fixed it, you start losing customers. Petty stuff makes it hard to earn.
I agree. I worked in the oil and gas field with my CDL for almost 10 years. ( retired now ) One previous employer was famous for deducting and nit picking everything he could out of an employees paycheck for the ones that gave a two week notice. Its almost as if the owner despised you for not working for him and wanting to improve yourself by leaving his place of business ( many did ) for greener pastures. Instead of giving a notice.......I became " sick" and obtained a doctors excuse to be off work for two weeks. Owner could not do anything about it because I had a return to work date on paper. So after the two weeks were up I texted them and said I wouldnt be able to return to work. Didnt give them any reason whatsoever. Then I put all the miserable bastards on call block to this day. I did get my last paycheck within that two weeks period with no fabricated deductions for anything. Moral of the story is two can play at that game and I was not going to let that miserable SOB have the upper hand.
as a welder i was getting 30 $ an hour , we were being replaced by illegals for 12 $ an hour , but i had to hold their hand and interpret the blueprints cause most could not speak never mind read english . i had to sign off the blueprint meaning i was responsible for any mistakes . i walked , no notice ,they lost a 10,000,000 dollar contract . felt good .
i only disagree with the term "illegal". undocumented is more accurate. they are just like you and want a better life. ALL the blame is on the employer. the undocumented wouldn't come here if employers wouldn't hire them. semantics matter.

I worked for 13 years in Australia as a professional engineer and, after a new General Manager was appointed to the office in another state, he laid me off with 4 weeks pay in lieu of notice. He did not have the balls to face me. Instead he sent me a three line letter. At my own expense, I hired a lawyer and got together ALL the documents needed to mount a case for unfair dismissal. Finally, the Managing Director, who resided in a neighbouring country, instructed the company lawyers to settle out of court and I received a fair payment.
Sue the dealership in small claims, I’ve had to do this with customers that don’t pay, granted they may claim damages etc, but you’d get more then you think, never listen to a lawyer that tells you it’s not worth your time, it is, it’s your money.
@William Mulvaney in Michigan it’s 6k and 80 to file and if you win you get your 80 bucks back, only problem with what he did by taking parts that weren’t his, is make a counter claim for damages valid.

I had a similar situation like his, a contractor I was doing work for as a sub, wouldn’t tell me how much I was getting paid, just get the job done he said, I’m like no... let’s come to an agreement etc, didn’t, so I refused to do anymore work until a contract was drawn, then he said I quit and he doesn’t have to pay me anything, had about 1800 in labor on the job already, so In small claims sued for 2400, and got 900, was due to damages he claimed cause i abandoned the job, but I’ll take the 900 vs nothing, cause he still had to pay me and if he didn’t pay on the judgement, I would have pursued every legal form of collecting. The 900 was better then just walking away, I’ve done that in the past and I’m tired of working for free because someone doesn’t want to pay their bills.

At age 74 retired 5 years, I think back over my long working career. Every place I ever worked that kept harping on loyalty turned out to be snakes. Even worse was the self righteous religious. The really good employers were the ones who were no BS, straight shooters. The last place I worked would have asked you how could they help you during the last 30 days. You would have left there with a letter of recommendation, best wishes and good will. BTW HAD THEY BEHAVED HONORABLY KARMA WOULD HAVE PROVIDED THEM A GOOD REPLACEMENT. Maybe it’s just me, or I’ve been lucky enough to work for great bosses and employers, but I’ve always given at least 2 weeks and they usually ask for more time. At my last two places, I gave 30 days notice, fully aware that they could ask me to leave immediately. One place asked for even more time, which made me eligible for an annual bonus that I would have missed out on. It’s tough when you quit working for great people but sometimes opportunity knocks and you have to make tough decisions.
Because the best employees are usually the easiest to screw over. The best employees are called the best employees because they usually don’t put up a fight when they get screwed over. Also a big reason why when a mad man shoots up a workplace the other employees say “he was real quiet and nice and was a great worker. I can’t believe he would do this.”
When I retired, I gave the company a 5 day notice. I found out that I could've gave them a one day notice. I used those 5 days wisely by distributing my specialized test equipment to fellow techs who I knew would take advantage and good care of them.
I actually got along good with my manager and told him my plans of retiring and he was able to get another communications tech in the five man shop so the tech could be up trained up on the fiberoptic and satellite communications systems.

I once gave an employer seven week notice so they would have time to hire my replacement and get adequate turnover with customers to avoid any impact on the company I was leaving. You guessed it, they neither hired anyone nor assigned any existing employee to work with me. The day before I was scheduled to leave they told me they needed more time. I told them I couldn't do it, but would take their calls and work with my replacement after hours for the next two weeks. Then they tried the "we're not going to give you your final pay if you don't stay." I just laughed and said, "State Labor Relations will have a field day with this." Took awhile but I eventually got paid in full without having to hire a lawyer.
Been on both ends of this as a Mechanic and Service Manager, When a guy turned in his 2 week notice to me I would ask him if he wanted to leave now or do the 2 weeks. Some would leave then so they could have a week or two of off time before the new job and the others would do the 2 weeks. However, I would not put them on anything heavy that might take over 2 weeks ( slow machine shops ) light work like water pumps, brakes, tune-ups, ac work I would load them up. If the guy did the 2 weeks when paycheck time came around on Friday I would let them go ahead and load out so they could get their boxes moved to their new shop before Monday. Once in a while a shop owner would match the offer or match the offer plus a dollar more made by the other shop. On the mechanic side I have been fortunate to have been able to give a 2 week notice and work the 2 weeks to the end. ( I hate to burn bridges unless I have to) Only 2 shops in my career did not get a notice, it was I leave or I was going to prison for murder. Those 2 shops I burned the bridges and boiled the water in the river to boot. As a service manager, I always hated seeing good mechanics leave and seeing owners let them leave because they did not want to match the other shop offer. Good mechanics are hard to find but parts changers are a dime a dozen. I do trust things will work for the better for your dad, mom and you.

My temper got very short and i told a customer off. the service manager should have dealt with the guy but put me face to face with him. the customer complained to corporate and i lost my job. when the shop manager gave me the bad news i was surprised. When i stood up my back ache was gone. I was amazed Like a miracle. Stress can be a killer.
I had a skill set in operating printing presses and the biggest and best employer in the city paid crap wages.I endured that for as long as I could because I was in college nights, but when ai got an offer$2 more I had to take it because I was starving. The day before I left the boss called me in his office and offered me a dollar more than the other guy. Shit, this job was easy enough, and I would have stayed, but I had already visited the new shop and accepted their offer. Turns out they had to pay my replacement more, and the other three operators more, too,. Perhaps the boss finally realized that we were the earners in the business, not him. The new shop treated me well, and I stayed until I got an offer they could not match four years later.
And plan ahead! Take all the pens, pencils, Sharpie, staplers, rolls of toilet paper, coffee creamer, and whatever you'll need for the next 30 years before quitting.
As a field technician (network tech) I learned in about... 2000 / 2001 I believe, after twice in a row over 8 years of giving 2 weeks notice, then getting dumped out and having to fight it for my resume, that I just took a micro-recorder with me in my pocket (back in the day. mp3 recorder these days.) and get it on recording that I'm the one who quit. The moment anyone comes in and says 'you're fired' - I just let them know I'll be bringing in the recording the next day of me quitting. That's usually enough right there and I get a 'just kidding around with you man, sorry to see you go!' and on one occasion I had to play it back before the 'joking around'. My most recent background check, actually had a prior employer state I was fired rather than quit. I played back the recording, they said ok, and I filed a complaint with the AG. These people are real bastards.,
In California if you quit, employer has to pay you in 72 hours. If they fire you, they have to pay you immediately. An employer will be forced to pay you a penalty equal to one day's pay for each day they go beyond these limits, up to 30 days. Enforced by the California Department of Labor Relations where they take this seriously.

I worked 40+ years in Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealerships as a tech and I can verify its a tough way to make a living. You have to watch out for yourself because nobody else will. I know it'll work out for you because good techs are hard to find
I had a boss who didnt want to give me a raise, i upsold all kinds of jobs only i could do... about 2 weeks worth, then i left at 8am on monday morning no notice nothing. He had to farm out all those jobs and probably lost way more than what he would have had to pay me with the raise i asked for, moral of the story, the technician is usually smarter than the boss in this industry

I had an employer that took good people quitting personally - he would start making little negative comments and once gone, would dismiss any work they produced as substandard. So many employers are bad "people" persons. If they are smart, they need to hire good managers to deal with employees for them. The personality required to drive your own business usually makes for a person that is bad at managing people on a daily basis.
One of my best bosses, I gave 2 weeks notice planning to be escorted out that day (as literally everyone was, they'd pay the two weeks but for "security reasons" they walked you out that day) and he asked me "are you going to work the 2 weeks?" I was like wait, I expected to be walked out today like everyone else... He asked when I start the next job and I said two weeks, I was planning on some time off - he asked if I'd work the next week to make sure everything got handed over properly, etc... I agreed. He was a nice guy, just the hours were killing me (70-80/wk typically), and he knew that but his bosses didn't care and budgets were tight. I asked why he wasnt punting me out that day and he said "I trust you" - I was one of the two "old guys" in the department, even the boss was 8 years younger than me, and most of the others were early 20s.
I've only given notice once, with an employer I knew appreciated me. And that was six months before I left. I'm working for a genuine psychopath now and I won't be giving him any warning. In fact, I'm going to try to arrange my departure in the beginning of a job, so he has to struggle to figure it out. In a working life of about 50 years, I've encountered three decent employers and two weren't even native born.
Both of my parents passed 10 days apart in 2010. I took 3 days off when my mom passed. Then my father passed, and my boss was pissed that I wanted more time off. I had two weeks vacation to use, and 3 sick days. I no call, no showed for 10 days. When I did go back, he said "we are having a meeting to discuss time off policy, you need to sit in on this". I told him to get fucked, I don't work for you. It was a priceless moment. He told me if I stayed, and finished up my scheduled work, we would pay me out my vacation time, and we could renegotiate my salary. Nope. Get fucked. I am now a 30+ year veteran tech. Guys like me are getting harder to find, and less are coming in behind us to take our places, making us more valuable then ever before. Never underestimate your value as a tech, my freind.
One place where I worked at, this guy who was unqualified and a scumbag was promoted over a Puerto Rican guy who was qualified for the job. Eduardo had six weeks of vacation saved up which he started taking a week at a time. The company worked on government contracts so they couldn't deny Eduardo his vacation. At the end of six weeks Eduardo had found another job and gave his notice. He was the one doing all the meaningful work so that department was left high and dry.
Much the same with me, myself & a coworker, both there the longest (just shy of 10 years) got canned - both in our 40s (coworker 44, I was 49) and by far the most experienced (though also highest paid). The boss hated it when he'd see us giving advice/helping our other (mostly younger) co-workers out... Y'know, we both figured if asked we'd take 10 minutes and give them younger "kids" our advice/experience to help them improve, which one would think a positive because it helped them in the right direction at times, saved overall time fixing things, etc. He saw it as us "slacking off/not working our jobs" (note that he was only boss for 3 years, our prior boss appreciated it). I often could do things in under half the time some of the younger guys could... In fact I remember a couple times they'd spent several hours on something before asking for my help, and I had it fixed in 15 minutes - trust me, I wasn't making hours of their pay in 15 minutes. Funny because after we got canned the next longest guy (8yrs) decided to find another job, and the one remaining. "Old timer" (7yrs) stuck around but mostly kept to himself. We talked like a year later and I had to laugh, he said the boss was blowing up at a couple of the guys because they'd spent 2 days on a problem that still wasn't fixed (and he was catching major flak of course)... But my old coworker said he "bit his tongue" and didn't say that I probably would've had it figured out in hours that first day. Things started really falling apart after that, I'm surprised they're still in business, he was a particularly unlikable boss - he had the "wants interchangable cogs" type, would rather have 10 idiots that can't troubleshoot a problem in 4 hours than a hard to replace knowledgeable person who could fix all 10 problems in 4 hours (the "nobody can be irreplaceable" theory).
Spent 15 years at a shop and I was one of the best,honest,hard workers there . Got my hours cut and than got let go shortly. I found out from my former coworkers that I lost my job because I didn't kiss his ass. I just kept to myself and did the work and go home and he didn't like that.
Funny, I just jumped ship to move to Georgia, put in my 2 weeks, that night, 9:30 they said it ain't worth it to pay me those 2 weeks and I can go. A week later my good buddy/mentour left because of how they treated us, now there down to 2 lube techs. They called me to come back to work a couple weeks untill I leave. Some dealers can burn for all I care
that's some shitty labour law. Here in Ontario Canada, the notice period is required, but if the employer doesn't want you to work for the full notice period, they have the option to terminate you early and pay out the full amount you would have worked during the notice period.
I'm also kinda glad to live in Europe, where labour laws are much stricter, even if they fire you on the spot for whatever reason (which is rare) they have to pay you at least 1 month of salary. If you got fired due to intentionally causing serious harm to the company, they can sue you afterwards, but they still need to pay you your salary. Whatever is going on in the US seems to enable abusive behavior towards labours.
Yeah the American labor system definitely favors the rights of management over the rights of employees. After being let go because my wife was in the hospital for 2 weeks with a premature birth, no prior problems with the company, I decided to go to work for myself and it was the best decision I've ever made
Same here in the UK. I’ve worked for a few arseholes in my time but they and I have always respected the notice period, and no one has attempted to not pay me what I was due.
I have worked for companies that does that when you give notice. Working in communications technology they wanted you gone because if your new employer was looking to recruit more than one they didn’t want you talking fellow employees into coming with you. One time I left an employer and two other techs ended up giving notice on my last day. They company was pissed but they had it coming because the low level manager was a dick. They ended up firing him a few weeks later. I few years later they tried to hire me back. I told them that with wages, pension and medical insurance they needed to give me $25 more an hour to keep my at the same level.They told me they couldn’t pay me that because of other employees not getting that much.

New York State is completely different on this. One of the few good things about this state. If they terminate you after notice, they have to pay two weeks salary. If they don’t pay you your paycheck within one week, they will owe you the check plus interest and you can pursue punitive damages for things like late fees.
It's like that in the cable and internet industry your better off burning all you vacation and quiting on them. You give them two weeks notice they gonna tell you don't worry about coming in
One company claimed they would honor your unused vacation time and pay me cash if I gave them two weeks notice. They didn't. And I was out 3 weeks vacation pay. Unless the deal is in writing in a signed employment contract, which it wasn't, the company does NOT have to honor any verbal offer. Don't ever forget that.
I gave my boss a 3 month notice in february, and they continued to honor our contract. Even got all my bonuses, vacation pay etc, and I could finish off with style. Last job I quit, I was fired during my 3 month notice, and they gave me 3 months of pay. But then I live in Europe...

@@ianc435 Most states have a small claims court called the "Peoples Court" where you bring your case against someone to a judge without attorneys. Small limits 2500-5000 max and the judge decides.
I had an employer hold my last paycheck once. He has never had a month without a flat tire since. If he didn't get Road hazzard insurance before, he does now.
My first job in the industry was at a Kenworth dealership. I watched them honor a two week notice of a coworker just months before I gave my notice. When I told my journeyman that I was in the interview process at another company , he warned me to plan on being let go the day I give my notice. Sure as shit that’s what they did. Turned out the service manager was relatively new and got his ass chewed by the GM for letting the previous guy work out his two weeks. Ever since then I’ve always coordinated with a new employer a flexible start date just in case the current employer doesn’t honor my two week notice. I only quit on the spot when I’ve been screwed over and there’s a mutual unspoken understanding that there ain’t gonna be no two weeks.
I have been a heavy equipment mechanic for 35 years. I learned years ago to quit and get your tools and leave otherwise they will hold your tools or it will get ugly.
Should you get your tools first then quit? Yeah the last job I had I pretty much did the same, I quit after my last day/paycheck. I think I have another 15hrs worth so I’ll circle back next payday, & see.
Last place didnt quite do that, but played games letting me in the gate and such... And the whole "what do you want" routine, while blocking a doorway to come in... Im a pretty reserved guy, but my tools are my livelihood, and you wont interfere with me picking them up, and I made that "crystal-fucking-clear" enough that everyone got out of my way and i loaded up without further issues LOL
Giving notice is a favor to your boss. Do it if your boss _deserves_ it, not because you've been told you're obligated to do something for them that they will _never_ do for you. If your boss doesn't care about you, then you shouldn't care about them. Loyalty and respect must be earned. In general I'm a very frank and honest person, which some bosses in the past have definitely used to take advantage of me. It took me a long time to learn that it is usually not in your best interest to share everything you know with your employer. Don't give anyone a rope to hang you with, unless you trust that person absolutely.
Worked in a Lincoln Mercury dealership and gave a two week notice, suddenly I was out of work when others were working. After a few days, I got the message and left. It was about money. Myself and a technician in Seattle were the VERY FIRST to get a "confirmed fix" on Ford's new "modulator" engine, this was 1991 and I was making $12.00/hr flat rate. The shop I went to paid $16.00/hr flat rate. I'm out of it now, and don't regret it one bit. The shop I was in was corrupt to the core with technicians paying the service manager for the "good jobs". Warranty time was downright ridiculous.
I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one. LOL I too worked for a Ford Dealership back in 93 to 97. Warranty time sucked and that's all they would give me. I also had my fill. Thanks for the post.

I have learned to never give any loyalty to any job. These companies don't care about your knowledge or dedication. I spent 9 years as a technician in a different field. I was one of the top techs in my company. The workload was getting absolutely out of control. I hired on with another company. Turned in my two weeks notice and was let go on the spot.

I have always secured my new job before letting my current job know anything so this removes the need or inclination to give a notice. I now run my own business and all I ask of my email is please don’t quit mid shift we treat you right and will pay you your pay upon leaving just let us know at the end of day don’t walk out in mid work on a small business that treats it’s employees good
Being a technician in the trades field I have no problem finding a job so I knew that wouldn't be an issue and by the time I got back home I was already hired on at another shop and it was Union

The lube techs who finally did their first brake job and left all the bolts loose....shit one week in i hauled a transmission and was doing all sorts of work...not exactly fast, but i'm smart enough to look into how things come apart ect. Sure, doing a brake job is nice...but it's not like OH YEAH i'm bIg MONEY. Seen a few of these guys, who were making the same as i was, all they did was tires oil and they JUST started brakes... brakes as in simple rotors pads. Same pay as them...for far more work, far more tool understanding, system understanding. Bosses gotta pay for what they got not what is on paper. One guy in the class didn't know how to use a ratchet halfway through the damn course. On god he did not know. This wasn't a joke.
I would contact your local labor board and see if they can protect you past minimum wage as like you signed a contract and can you ensure that I get that money if my employer won't pay it? And if they tell you you're just going to get minimum wage on their end I would collect my paycheck and leave Or if you trust somebody in the shop ask what has happened to other people when you give notice
I was a Toyota master tech and ASE master tech, we had teams and I was the oldest tech on my team according to my team leader said I was too slow, after 2 years he told the service manager that he didn't want me on his team anymore so I got demoted. I was put on the used car team and made a lot less money. I went to the manager on a Thursday and I told him I quit, the manager said that I had to give him 2 weeks' notice I said if you were to fire me that he wouldn't give me 2 weeks' notice. I came to work that Friday and that Saturday I took my toolbox and my stuff and left. When I came back for my paycheck he took money out of my check for all my uniforms. All my uniforms were in the locker room there no uniforms missing, within the next 2 weeks the owner sold the dealership and they brought all people and fired all the employees who worked there.
Two-week notice only works one way, a courtesy they expect and we offer for our integrity, but employers never offer. I was loyal and reliable five years solid, with only three annual raises averaging $.32. They let me go without notice. My new job, in six months I've made more money, more hours, a raise and another I know is on the way, and bonuses totaling $1200, in a shop that is climate controlled (in Arizona) and everything doesn't depend on ME being there to function. Trust me, employers will play your play your pride and emotions only for their benefit.
I actually gave a 2 week notice at a diesel shop because of family issues as well and my boss actually paid me what I usually made every 2 weeks right then and there and told me to take care of my family and thanked me for how hard I worked while I was there. I was blown away and will never forget how well I was treated by this owner

After working somewhere for 2 1/2 years, I had psychological issues that were getting bad, so I told my boss I was going to the hospital immediately after work to work on it, and I didn't know when I could come back. Seemed okay with it. It got so bad after a couple weeks I stayed at the hospital for a full day. After a few weeks of it still being severe and knowing I couldn't go back I told him. He hung up the phone and never talked to me again. So if I had cancer, would he still treat me the same way? And for the record, I never collected unemployment, welfare, or anything after I quit, even though I probably could have with the whole covid thing. I have my own business and support myself, I just couldn't work there anymore. One of the hardest working employees there and in the end you just get treated like shit if you have to leave for medical reasons, God I hate that.

Yeah, that sounds like the south...When you give notice they tell you can leave now and then they screw you out of your pay check....At Will employees can be fired at anytime, for no reason(except for cases of discrimination.) I learned this the hardway back in the 80's...Since that time, I don't give notice I just leave and have them mail my final paycheck...Employers enjoy telling you that you are employed "at will" and that you can be fired at anytime....I enjoy telling them that "at will" goes both ways and that I can quit at anytime WITHOUT notice or reason...🤔Shalom

Sorry to hear about your experience with the 30 day notice. There are still some good owners out there and a 2 weeks notice is still appreciated. I would say at your new place of employment see how they treat people who give notice. If they treat the person fair and let them finish the notice time. I would say give them notice. Once he leaves half the business is gone, and when he arrives at another shop, it takes about a month for the State and City municipalities to find him, and everyone has twice as much work to do. Everyone is shocked how busy they are doing all this new niche work, ALL the metropolitan law enforcement vehicles, parks department, DNR, USPS, F-450 Ambulance just for Warranty drivetrain, everything except the large firetrucks and garbage trucks. The city has their own large diesel technicians for firetrucks, and they work on the garbage/recycling/compost trucks 🤮⚠️ I'm certain most shops would refuse to work on a garbage truck in the building unless it was power washed entirely! They can't allow that smell to ruin every other customers vehicle ⚠️🤮. Those need their own special facility for maintenance and repair to contain the smells! 80+% of government vehicles are Ford's, the last generation of mail trucks had a lot of Ford Explorer parts underneath, don't understand why nobody else goes and gets that work, Crown Vics, Taurus' Explorers, F-350's, Transit, etc. Enough to fill half the back lot of a good dealership with government contract repairs. It's easy money, don't have to discount the work because a divorced single Mom doesn't have the money, the City and State police will pay their bills!
He just retired when the mandatory State shutdown COVID layoffs began, wasn't going to play the unemployment game. Then returned at a different dealership a few months ago, it's easy to tell which of his new co-workers are lazy, they complain about learning how to source the Police Interceptor or fleet service vehicle parts or working on those modified vehicles. They don't want more work, or learn about Ford fleet service vehicles. When they were all in doubt about their own layoffs and getting sick just last year, be happy there is more work now, instead of layoffs.

Now I work on two million dollar locomotive's all tools provided for free. 32.45 an hour and a million dollar retirement in a few more years. Cars suck. My $40.000 dollars in tools can rust to death. As for no notice... you're more or less saying what I believe. You give what you get. If you're doing good honest turns for them and they care less then you already know how it's gonna go. I've given two weeks at a couple places and it was all good. We parted on good terms with mutual respect. One place did jack me around, I collected my last check, listened to their jack around for 5 minutes and left already employed elsewhere and never looked back or returned phone calls. My new employment went well, lasted many years. So I wouldn't let it aggravate you, or dictate how the next one goes. Dicks will be dicks, If it's not you it's the next guy, the other guy, or some other random guy.
Man the stories I could tell on this subject! In my opinion, these weak service managers and service directors take our notice personal like we worked for the greatest boss😂 Not! I gave a 2 weeks notice at my last auto mechanic job at a Chevrolet dealership. I was gone in 2 days. Enjoyed my time between jobs. That was 11 years ago. Stayed out of auto mechanics and no regrets. Better pay, benefits including retirement.
Having been in the dealership service/parts depts for over 30 years. Seen this more than many times. Good thing about being a good tech. You'll always land on your feet and you pretty much get a instant job wherever you go. P.S..You forgot to mention that sub letting that job to another dealer, if it was warranty..they get paid for the entire job. If it was customer pay, all the profits were lost absorbing the labor time billed by the other dealer.

I had a friend who started his new job on the same day he started a two week vacation at his old job. He quit on the last day of his two week vacation, having already been at the new job for two weeks.
While I don't condone this kind of stuff, I've always thought it really strange that the company expects you to give them two weeks notice when you plan to leave, but when they fire you they'll tell you on the same day while they're escorting you out the door.
Notice is a risky thing to give no matter what type of job you have. They won't give you a notice when they decide to fire you.

I once worked for an employer, gave my two weeks notice as required, and he fired me on the spot. I went and applied for unemployment, and he had to pay because he did not honor the two weeks notice. That was many years ago, and through that experience I learned that you owe your employer no notice. There is not such thing as employer loyalty. I have yet, in my 65 years, to meet any employer who gives a worker a two week notice that they intend to fire them. I thought your 30 day notice was extremely generous.
The "courtesy" of giving a notice and allowing the employer time to find a replacement used to be a gentleman's agreement that that employer would give you a good referral to future employers. If you have ever called to get a referral these days for someone you want to hire, most companies will only confirm employment dates because anything else said opens them up to liable. If an employer wants to badmouth you, a notice or not won't change anything. Once you are gone, whether you gave notice and trained your replacement or not will make little to no difference. Generally I recommend to not burn bridges because you never know if it will come back and haunt you but always be smart (quit on a payday, burn all your vacation and PTO before notice, get all personal items out of work before giving notice, etc.), have a plan for separation, and try to keep emotion out of it.
Generally speaking, you are correct as you know. It's how well do you know your employer, and when you see them treat others poorly that's a good sign they are not who you want to work for. Working for the other guy is a compromise at best.

As professional mechanic myself, I will add you never do work for a shop off the clock. The shop comes to expect it from you as well as any other techs employed at that business. If you get hurt during working off the clock, you can be denied workers comp. Also 90% of the time the shop won’t reciprocate any benefits to you for putting in the extra effort. Don’t ever use your hard earned skills for free, except for family or friends.
There was a chain auto shop that ended up in a class action lawsuit for working employees off the clock.

The "technician shortage" is caused by both the business and the technician. Example; about 2 years ago I stopped in at a local bagel store. A worker asked me what we pay. When I told her the average depending on experience and knowledge, she told me her boyfriend was making 6.00 per hour less than I was paying trainees. He supposedly had 6 years experience. I told her to send him down but he never showed. When I asked her why, she told me that he was afraid to leave as they liked him. I said, if they liked him so much why aren't they paying him?

They need me to make them money but I don't need them to make them money. You belong in a shop where you're a one man show, like me, and get to call the shots on everything. It took years of paying dues as a dealership tech to get to this point.
A lot of workers will sabotage and steal if you give them notice, better to just pay the severance pay and get them off the property.

Not at an auto shop but, When I was 15 years old I worked for a 4 star restaurant washing dishes. There were some very nasty things that went on in the kitchen. I ended up giving 2 weeks notice and was let go on the spot. I asked for my pay and the owner refused to pay me. I called up the local fox news investigators to tell them my story and how messed up the kitchen was. They came out to the restaurant and interviewed me out front while I told all of the patrons coming in all of the horror stories of the kitchen. The owner ended up coming out front to "buy me off". While he was paying me out front to get me to shut up and leave, the news team slipped in through the back and filmed all of the nasty shit in the kitchen and ended up airing the story the next day. Ultimately the restaurant ended up closing down from the news story and I ended up with $300 more than my paycheck should have been from his hush money.

The guy I worked for at a small furniture store in Italy for about 5 years, when I had to go back to Romania to deal with some family problems and a funeral, i gave him a 2 week notice and he paid me for all my hours, asked when I would return. I told him that I wasn't sure,2 months or 3 . He then decided to pay me what I was making normally for the time i was going to not work and told me that he will be waiting for my return and he wished me all the good with my trip. I was in tears. I end up returning after 3 months and he had hired a friend of mine to help, as a temp and after my return he end up keeping for over 2 years as my helper. Best boss I ever had.

Years ago a friend of ours who was a mechanic ran into a situation where the dealer failed to pay in his social security, even though it was deducted every paycheck. The dealer claimed that the mechanic was a contract/1099 employee. Well, the mechanic had kept all his pay stubs, W2's, etc and proved that the dealer failed to pay it in. Well in the end the dealer had to pay in all the missing Social Security payments, plus the interest it was supposed to have gotten, plus a penalty, plus a bonus for the amount of delay they had caused the mechanic in retiring. The dealer nearly lost his franchise by playing fast and loose with his payroll/book keeping system. After the SSA got done with him, the IRS went to town going back to see what else he might have pulled.

I worked for a dealer and his family. They were so tight with payroll and no one could get a raise and even the book keeper complained. I told her if these people could get you to work for nothing they would. They thought that they were superior beings....Not!

Not necessarily. I worked in an office between mechanic jobs writing service manuals for the military. I got a great offer to get back in the business but I was in the middle of my project. Told the new place I need to finish stuff before I can come. So I kept working for another two months, then gave my two week notice. They actually let me finish most of the two weeks till my project was done. Then I walked. I agree most were walked out same day but if they need you, they will keep you for every last drop of work they can get from you.

Used to be a Team Lead in IT for a major Bank. Policy was if an employee moves on to another financial company, Security walks them out that day. One of my guys gives notice and ... nothing happens. The next day, nothing happens until the end of day and Security walk him out and take away all access. He was key to a major project so I invited him back to the company as a "guest" to provide the updates we needed. Parted on good terms. 5 years later, he gets re-hired and moves up to a VP position!

I had something similar happen to me except I was a tattoo artist working in a shop. I had rented a place of my own and been secretly stock piling supplies and getting everything ready to open my own shop for a about 3 months. Glad I did wait to give my notice till I was totally prepared to open. The day my health permit was ok'ed I told the owner I was leaving and gave her a couple weeks notice. She fired me on the spot and told the receptionist not to pay me out the 3 or 400 I had made that day. I was the only artist working that night and had a shop full of people waiting so I told everyone to follow me and I would do all their stuff for half price. Lol gave me a nice little head start on business
Years ago I was hired by a drilling company to bring a certain client aboard who I had done work for years.
Three holes from completion I was terminated.
I called the quarry manager telling him I wouldn't be back to finish up and would he consider hiring me if I got my own drill rig. In 2004 I bought a used rig, took the client away from my former employer. After a move to California for a few years during a slow time, I returned and took the client away from them again.
I just finished a contract with the client worth almost a quarter of a million dollars for 2 months work. Not too bad for a one man show.
I got fired and damn glad I did.

Im in south east Texas, yes its Hot!. im good to about 100 degrees any higher i slow down. my slow down is 60 hours a week instead of 80 plus. but i was treated like i was goofing off even tho i had more hours than everyone . at that time i was 49 years old I"ve had a major heart attack 3 stints , a quadruple bypass a year after the stints and was still top dog in the shop. but they kept pushing me and pushing me in 108 temps . i think they were trying to kill me lol.

That is so typical, “a lady” in “hr” worked at a Ford dealer just under 40 years and it was always the bi$ches upstairs in the office complaining about the technicians, they had no idea what we did, we were told we didn’t need lunches, were overpaid, dirty, smelled like oil, etc. left the job because my joints wore out in my hands.
I will add one thing that I learned about car dealers and others of their ilk many years ago. Not only do you, not give them notification, but you get your paycheck and go to the bank and cash it first before you quit. I worked for car dealerships for almost 30 years in various positions from sales to finance and service departments. When I first started in the industry, my sales manager took me aside one day and gave this same advice. That was way back in 1973. It saved my bacon several times over. I’m 73 Years Old now.

In the sale, you introduce the service managers to the buyers. You build service packages and don't make them like all the hidden fees (straight up, lose these... customer trust equals repeat business and referrals.) Customer service equals steady income. Great mechanics fix it once and the customer is happy. If they have to bring it back in because you did not verify that the balance of a tire was correct after you fixed it, you start losing customers. Petty stuff makes it hard to earn.

I agree. I worked in the oil and gas field with my CDL for almost 10 years. ( retired now ) One previous employer was famous for deducting and nit picking everything he could out of an employees paycheck for the ones that gave a two week notice. Its almost as if the owner despised you for not working for him and wanting to improve yourself by leaving his place of business ( many did ) for greener pastures. Instead of giving a notice.......I became " sick" and obtained a doctors excuse to be off work for two weeks. Owner could not do anything about it because I had a return to work date on paper. So after the two weeks were up I texted them and said I wouldnt be able to return to work. Didnt give them any reason whatsoever. Then I put all the miserable bastards on call block to this day. I did get my last paycheck within that two weeks period with no fabricated deductions for anything. Moral of the story is two can play at that game and I was not going to let that miserable SOB have the upper hand.

as a welder i was getting 30 $ an hour , we were being replaced by illegals for 12 $ an hour , but i had to hold their hand and interpret the blueprints cause most could not speak never mind read english . i had to sign off the blueprint meaning i was responsible for any mistakes . i walked , no notice ,they lost a 10,000,000 dollar contract . felt good .

I worked for 13 years in Australia as a professional engineer and, after a new General Manager was appointed to the office in another state, he laid me off with 4 weeks pay in lieu of notice. He did not have the balls to face me. Instead he sent me a three line letter.
At my own expense, I hired a lawyer and got together ALL the documents needed to mount a case for unfair dismissal. Finally, the Managing Director, who resided in a neighbouring country, instructed the company lawyers to settle out of court and I received a fair payment.
Sue the dealership in small claims, I’ve had to do this with customers that don’t pay, granted they may claim damages etc, but you’d get more then you think, never listen to a lawyer that tells you it’s not worth your time, it is, it’s your money.

I had a similar situation like his, a contractor I was doing work for as a sub, wouldn’t tell me how much I was getting paid, just get the job done he said, I’m like no... let’s come to an agreement etc, didn’t, so I refused to do anymore work until a contract was drawn, then he said I quit and he doesn’t have to pay me anything, had about 1800 in labor on the job already, so In small claims sued for 2400, and got 900, was due to damages he claimed cause i abandoned the job, but I’ll take the 900 vs nothing, cause he still had to pay me and if he didn’t pay on the judgement, I would have pursued every legal form of collecting. The 900 was better then just walking away, I’ve done that in the past and I’m tired of working for free because someone doesn’t want to pay their bills.

At age 74 retired 5 years, I think back over my long working career. Every place I ever worked that kept harping on loyalty turned out to be snakes. Even worse was the self righteous religious.
The really good employers were the ones who were no BS, straight shooters. The last place I worked would have asked you how could they help you during the last 30 days. You would have left there with a letter of recommendation, best wishes and good will. BTW HAD THEY BEHAVED HONORABLY KARMA WOULD HAVE PROVIDED THEM A GOOD REPLACEMENT.

Maybe it’s just me, or I’ve been lucky enough to work for great bosses and employers, but I’ve always given at least 2 weeks and they usually ask for more time. At my last two places, I gave 30 days notice, fully aware that they could ask me to leave immediately. One place asked for even more time, which made me eligible for an annual bonus that I would have missed out on. It’s tough when you quit working for great people but sometimes opportunity knocks and you have to make tough decisions.
Regardless of the field, I will never understand why the best employees are treated the worst by their employers.

When I retired, I gave the company a 5 day notice. I found out that I could've gave them a one day notice. I used those 5 days wisely by distributing my specialized test equipment to fellow techs who I knew would take advantage and good care of them.

I actually got along good with my manager and told him my plans of retiring and he was able to get another communications tech in the five man shop so the tech could be up trained up on the fiberoptic and satellite communications systems.

I once gave an employer seven week notice so they would have time to hire my replacement and get adequate turnover with customers to avoid any impact on the company I was leaving. You guessed it, they neither hired anyone nor assigned any existing employee to work with me. The day before I was scheduled to leave they told me they needed more time. I told them I couldn't do it, but would take their calls and work with my replacement after hours for the next two weeks. Then they tried the "we're not going to give you your final pay if you don't stay." I just laughed and said, "State Labor Relations will have a field day with this." Took awhile but I eventually got paid in full without having to hire a lawyer.
Been on both ends of this as a Mechanic and Service Manager, When a guy turned in his 2 week notice to me I would ask him if he wanted to leave now or do the 2 weeks. Some would leave then so they could have a week or two of off time before the new job and the others would do the 2 weeks. However, I would not put them on anything heavy that might take over 2 weeks ( slow machine shops ) light work like water pumps, brakes, tune-ups, ac work I would load them up. If the guy did the 2 weeks when paycheck time came around on Friday I would let them go ahead and load out so they could get their boxes moved to their new shop before Monday. Once in a while a shop owner would match the offer or match the offer plus a dollar more made by the other shop. On the mechanic side I have been fortunate to have been able to give a 2 week notice and work the 2 weeks to the end. ( I hate to burn bridges unless I have to) Only 2 shops in my career did not get a notice, it was I leave or I was going to prison for murder. Those 2 shops I burned the bridges and boiled the water in the river to boot. As a service manager, I always hated seeing good mechanics leave and seeing owners let them leave because they did not want to match the other shop offer. Good mechanics are hard to find but parts changers are a dime a dozen. I do trust things will work for the better for your dad, mom and you.

I'm at the point now where I absolutely hate my job at the dealership. I used to love it for the first few years but 15 years later with different management has made it a hell hole and I don't want to start over somewhere else AND it is so close to my house and I hate commuting so I remain in limbo completely miserable.

I had a skill set in operating printing presses and the biggest and best employer in the city paid crap wages.I endured that for as long as I could because I was in college nights, but when ai got an offer$2 more I had to take it because I was starving. The day before I left the boss called me in his office and offered me a dollar more than the other guy. Shit, this job was easy enough, and I would have stayed, but I had already visited the new shop and accepted their offer. Turns out they had to pay my replacement more, and the other three operators more, too,. Perhaps the boss finally realized that we were the earners in the business, not him. The new shop treated me well, and I stayed until I got an offer they could not match four years later.

I quit a dealer after 18 years. Gave them a hours notice. The length of time it took me to gather up my tools and load them up. Best thing I ever did.
And plan ahead! Take all the pens, pencils, Sharpie, staplers, rolls of toilet paper, coffee creamer, and whatever you'll need for the next 30 years before quitting.

As a field technician (network tech) I learned in about... 2000 / 2001 I believe, after twice in a row over 8 years of giving 2 weeks notice, then getting dumped out and having to fight it for my resume, that I just took a micro-recorder with me in my pocket (back in the day. mp3 recorder these days.) and get it on recording that I'm the one who quit.
The moment anyone comes in and says 'you're fired' - I just let them know I'll be bringing in the recording the next day of me quitting. That's usually enough right there and I get a 'just kidding around with you man, sorry to see you go!' and on one occasion I had to play it back before the 'joking around'. My most recent background check, actually had a prior employer state I was fired rather than quit. I played back the recording, they said ok, and I filed a complaint with the AG. These people are real bastards.,
In California if you quit, employer has to pay you in 72 hours. If they fire you, they have to pay you immediately. An employer will be forced to pay you a penalty equal to one day's pay for each day they go beyond these limits, up to 30 days. Enforced by the California Department of Labor Relations where they take this seriously.

I worked 40+ years in Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealerships as a tech and I can verify its a tough way to make a living. You have to watch out for yourself because nobody else will. I know it'll work out for you because good techs are hard to find
I had a boss who didnt want to give me a raise, i upsold all kinds of jobs only i could do... about 2 weeks worth, then i left at 8am on monday morning no notice nothing. He had to farm out all those jobs and probably lost way more than what he would have had to pay me with the raise i asked for, moral of the story, the technician is usually smarter than the boss in this industry

I had an employer that took good people quitting personally - he would start making little negative comments and once gone, would dismiss any work they produced as substandard. So many employers are bad "people" persons. If they are smart, they need to hire good managers to deal with employees for them. The personality required to drive your own business usually makes for a person that is bad at managing people on a daily basis.
One of my best bosses, I gave 2 weeks notice planning to be escorted out that day (as literally everyone was, they'd pay the two weeks but for "security reasons" they walked you out that day) and he asked me "are you going to work the 2 weeks?" I was like wait, I expected to be walked out today like everyone else... He asked when I start the next job and I said two weeks, I was planning on some time off - he asked if I'd work the next week to make sure everything got handed over properly, etc... I agreed. He was a nice guy, just the hours were killing me (70-80/wk typically), and he knew that but his bosses didn't care and budgets were tight. I asked why he wasnt punting me out that day and he said "I trust you" - I was one of the two "old guys" in the department, even the boss was 8 years younger than me, and most of the others were early 20s.

I'm working for a genuine psychopath now and I won't be giving him any warning. In fact, I'm going to try to arrange my departure in the beginning of a job, so he has to struggle to figure it out.
In a working life of about 50 years, I've encountered three decent employers and two weren't even native born.
Both of my parents passed 10 days apart in 2010. I took 3 days off when my mom passed. Then my father passed, and my boss was pissed that I wanted more time off. I had two weeks vacation to use, and 3 sick days. I no call, no showed for 10 days. When I did go back, he said "we are having a meeting to discuss time off policy, you need to sit in on this". I told him to get fucked, I don't work for you. It was a priceless moment. He told me if I stayed, and finished up my scheduled work, we would pay me out my vacation time, and we could renegotiate my salary. Nope. Get fucked. I am now a 30+ year veteran tech. Guys like me are getting harder to find, and less are coming in behind us to take our places, making us more valuable then ever before. Never underestimate your value as a tech, my freind.
One place where I worked at, this guy who was unqualified and a scumbag was promoted over a Puerto Rican guy who was qualified for the job. Eduardo had six weeks of vacation saved up which he started taking a week at a time. The company worked on government contracts so they couldn't deny Eduardo his vacation. At the end of six weeks Eduardo had found another job and gave his notice. He was the one doing all the meaningful work so that department was left high and dry.
Much the same with me, myself & a coworker, both there the longest (just shy of 10 years) got canned - both in our 40s (coworker 44, I was 49) and by far the most experienced (though also highest paid). The boss hated it when he'd see us giving advice/helping our other (mostly younger) co-workers out... Y'know, we both figured if asked we'd take 10 minutes and give them younger "kids" our advice/experience to help them improve, which one would think a positive because it helped them in the right direction at times, saved overall time fixing things, etc. He saw it as us "slacking off/not working our jobs" (note that he was only boss for 3 years, our prior boss appreciated it). I often could do things in under half the time some of the younger guys could... In fact I remember a couple times they'd spent several hours on something before asking for my help, and I had it fixed in 15 minutes - trust me, I wasn't making hours of their pay in 15 minutes.
Funny because after we got canned the next longest guy (8yrs) decided to find another job, and the one remaining. "Old timer" (7yrs) stuck around but mostly kept to himself. We talked like a year later and I had to laugh, he said the boss was blowing up at a couple of the guys because they'd spent 2 days on a problem that still wasn't fixed (and he was catching major flak of course)... But my old coworker said he "bit his tongue" and didn't say that I probably would've had it figured out in hours that first day. Things started really falling apart after that, I'm surprised they're still in business, he was a particularly unlikable boss - he had the "wants interchangable cogs" type, would rather have 10 idiots that can't troubleshoot a problem in 4 hours than a hard to replace knowledgeable person who could fix all 10 problems in 4 hours (the "nobody can be irreplaceable" theory).

Spent 15 years at a shop and I was one of the best,honest,hard workers there . Got my hours cut and than got let go shortly. I found out from my former coworkers that I lost my job because I didn't kiss his ass. I just kept to myself and did the work and go home and he didn't like that.
Funny, I just jumped ship to move to Georgia, put in my 2 weeks, that night, 9:30 they said it ain't worth it to pay me those 2 weeks and I can go. A week later my good buddy/mentour left because of how they treated us, now there down to 2 lube techs. They called me to come back to work a couple weeks untill I leave. Some dealers can burn for all I care
that's some shitty labour law. Here in Ontario Canada, the notice period is required, but if the employer doesn't want you to work for the full notice period, they have the option to terminate you early and pay out the full amount you would have worked during the notice period.
I'm also kinda glad to live in Europe, where labour laws are much stricter, even if they fire you on the spot for whatever reason (which is rare) they have to pay you at least 1 month of salary.
If you got fired due to intentionally causing serious harm to the company, they can sue you afterwards, but they still need to pay you your salary.
Whatever is going on in the US seems to enable abusive behavior towards labours.
Yeah the American labor system definitely favors the rights of management over the rights of employees. After being let go because my wife was in the hospital for 2 weeks with a premature birth, no prior problems with the company, I decided to go to work for myself and it was the best decision I've ever made
Same here in the UK. I’ve worked for a few arseholes in my time but they and I have always respected the notice period, and no one has attempted to not pay me what I was due.
I have worked for companies that does that when you give notice. Working in communications technology they wanted you gone because if your new employer was looking to recruit more than one they didn’t want you talking fellow employees into coming with you. One time I left an employer and two other techs ended up giving notice on my last day. They company was pissed but they had it coming because the low level manager was a dick. They ended up firing him a few weeks later. I few years later they tried to hire me back. I told them that with wages, pension and medical insurance they needed to give me $25 more an hour to keep my at the same level.They told me they couldn’t pay me that because of other employees not getting that much.

New York State is completely different on this. One of the few good things about this state. If they terminate you after notice, they have to pay two weeks salary. If they don’t pay you your paycheck within one week, they will owe you the check plus interest and you can pursue punitive damages for things like late fees.

Also good to keep in mind that being paid what you're owed at your job is a Civil Rights matter as well.

My first job in the industry was at a Kenworth dealership. I watched them honor a two week notice of a coworker just months before I gave my notice. When I told my journeyman that I was in the interview process at another company , he warned me to plan on being let go the day I give my notice. Sure as shit that’s what they did. Turned out the service manager was relatively new and got his ass chewed by the GM for letting the previous guy work out his two weeks. Ever since then I’ve always coordinated with a new employer a flexible start date just in case the current employer doesn’t honor my two week notice. I only quit on the spot when I’ve been screwed over and there’s a mutual unspoken understanding that there ain’t gonna be no two weeks.
I have been a heavy equipment mechanic for 35 years. I learned years ago to quit and get your tools and leave otherwise they will hold your tools or it will get ugly.
Should you get your tools first then quit? Yeah the last job I had I pretty much did the same, I quit after my last day/paycheck.

Giving notice is a favor to your boss. Do it if your boss _deserves_ it, not because you've been told you're obligated to do something for them that they will _never_ do for you. If your boss doesn't care about you, then you shouldn't care about them. Loyalty and respect must be earned.
In general I'm a very frank and honest person, which some bosses in the past have definitely used to take advantage of me. It took me a long time to learn that it is usually not in your best interest to share everything you know with your employer. Don't give anyone a rope to hang you with, unless you trust that person absolutely.
Worked in a Lincoln Mercury dealership and gave a two week notice, suddenly I was out of work when others were working. After a few days, I got the message and left. It was about money. Myself and a technician in Seattle were the VERY FIRST to get a "confirmed fix" on Ford's new "modulator" engine, this was 1991 and I was making $12.00/hr flat rate. The shop I went to paid $16.00/hr flat rate.
I'm out of it now, and don't regret it one bit. The shop I was in was corrupt to the core with technicians paying the service manager for the "good jobs". Warranty time was downright ridiculous.
I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one. LOL I too worked for a Ford Dealership back in 93 to 97. Warranty time sucked and that's all they would give me. I also had my fill. Thanks for the post.

I have learned to never give any loyalty to any job. These companies don't care about your knowledge or dedication.
I spent 9 years as a technician in a different field. I was one of the top techs in my company. The workload was getting absolutely out of control. I hired on with another company. Turned in my two weeks notice and was let go on the spot.

And they wonder why employees aren't loyal anymore? This is just part of what is wrong with our country today. No leadership and no ethics. I admire you for your commitment to your family and what you gave up for that. God Bless.
I have always secured my new job before letting my current job know anything so this removes the need or inclination to give a notice. I now run my own business and all I ask of my email is please don’t quit mid shift we treat you right and will pay you your pay upon leaving just let us know at the end of day don’t walk out in mid work on a small business that treats it’s employees good
Being a technician in the trades field I have no problem finding a job so I knew that wouldn't be an issue and by the time I got back home I was already hired on at another shop and it was Union

This is any job these days. Companies treat you more like a number then family. They don't give you 2 weeks

You're only "Family" if you have the same last name. Otherwise you're expendable.
Remember that old saying: "If you want loyalty, get a dog". It's been that way for the 43 years I've worked in Aerospace. Big companies or small. No difference. It's all bottom line driven.

The lube techs who finally did their first brake job and left all the bolts loose....shit one week in i hauled a transmission and was doing all sorts of work...not exactly fast, but i'm smart enough to look into how things come apart ect. Sure, doing a brake job is nice...but it's not like OH YEAH i'm bIg MONEY. Seen a few of these guys, who were making the same as i was, all they did was tires oil and they JUST started brakes... brakes as in simple rotors pads. Same pay as them...for far more work, far more tool understanding, system understanding. Bosses gotta pay for what they got not what is on paper. One guy in the class didn't know how to use a ratchet halfway through the damn course. On god he did not know. This wasn't a joke.

I would contact your local labor board and see if they can protect you past minimum wage as like you signed a contract and can you ensure that I get that money if my employer won't pay it? And if they tell you you're just going to get minimum wage on their end

Or if you trust somebody in the shop ask what has happened to other people when you give notice
I was a Toyota master tech and ASE master tech, we had teams and I was the oldest tech on my team according to my team leader said I was too slow, after 2 years he told the service manager that he didn't want me on his team anymore so I got demoted. I was put on the used car team and made a lot less money. I went to the manager on a Thursday and I told him I quit, the manager said that I had to give him 2 weeks' notice I said if you were to fire me that he wouldn't give me 2 weeks' notice. I came to work that Friday and that Saturday I took my toolbox and my stuff and left. When I came back for my paycheck he took money out of my check for all my uniforms. All my uniforms were in the locker room there no uniforms missing, within the next 2 weeks the owner sold the dealership and they brought all people and fired all the employees who worked
there.
Two-week notice only works one way, a courtesy they expect and we offer for our integrity, but employers never offer. I was loyal and reliable five years solid, with only three annual raises averaging $.32. They let me go without notice. My new job, in six months I've made more money, more hours, a raise and another I know is on the way, and bonuses totaling $1200, in a shop that is climate controlled (in Arizona) and everything doesn't depend on ME being there to function. Trust me, employers will play your play your pride and emotions only for their benefit.
