I have been fighting my soul for 13 years working a corporate job... I never wanted to get into it. I never wanted to do a master's in marketing. I just followed the herd.
13 years later 39 years old now, I found myself crying in the bathroom trying to finish a presentation wondering how I got to this point over and over again... I am responsible for my anxiety and depression. I murdered my soul.
Your video saved me. Articulated in 10 minutes what I was going through for 13 years. I still don't have the courage to stop... Especially with bloody COVID around now...
But I have to, I just know I have to. I have to go blue collar and start all over again.
I too was toying with the idea of landscaping or study to become an electrian.
I want to work with my hands fewer people and less deadlines!
You are a beautiful person and reminded me that we are all not cut from the same cloth... Something I knew in college but got lost in the noise of the world.
I'm going to do it... I have to, for the sake of my mental health.

Being successful does not mean being rich and famous as many may think. Being successful is enjoying your life even if you work sweeping the floors of an airport. It has nothing to do with status and it has everything to do with what makes you feel good, what brings you enjoyment and a sense of fulfillment.
Your mom wants the best for you, I'm sure, and she might think that post job is not enough for your potential. You can do whatever you want in life. Notice the characteristics of that post job. Did you like interacting with people? Customer service? Moving a lot instead of being glued to a chair? Doing this exercise can help you funnel your preferred work profile to know what to look for, in case you can't go back immediately to the post office. I wish you the best ♥

Halfway through my course I realised that I actually already have an incredibly enviable life. I have a job that I mostly like, where I work with people that I like , and that pays me enough to do the things I like in my free time. Sure, I have to save hard for some things, and I can't afford to be frivolous, but a major key factor is that I have the free time to enjoy in the first place. I work 10am-6pm and leave my work at work. It never eats into my evenings or weekends.

I started out as a mechanical engineer, realized I didn’t enjoy anything about the work environment. I couldn’t even make it past an interview at large corporations because I found the people and culture so repulsive. Ended up going back to school, finishing my piano performance degree, and taught piano for about five years. I always missed having physical activity and being outside though so when my teaching business died at the beginning of the pandemic I took a job as a delivery driver while I got my skoolie going. Now I’m living in a skoolie, traveling, making RUclips videos while playing piano and occasionally designing boats. I was just listening to a preacher who said something very applicable here: "Our culture doesn't teach young people how to identify their gift [i.e. the talent that God gave them to make a difference in the world and to become valuable and irreplaceable]. It teaches them how to get a job. And a job doesn't make you valuable. It keeps you poor."
There's also a book that I haven't read, but which I have seen a summary of called "Bullsh*t Jobs." It basically says if you're not making something for someone else--including all the steps involved in that process, such as shipping and retail sales--or providing a service that they need but can't or don't want do themselves--e.g. plumbing, building, delivery driver, food prep, etc.--then you have a bullsh*t job. Just about every government job is a BS job because the government provides no products and doesn't provide services that others can't provide better. Most of the time, government jobs are related to taking money from one set of people, skimming off most of the money to feed the government beast, then passing what's left on to someone else. Most legal jobs are BS jobs because they're about complying with government regulations (this also applies to a lot of admin jobs at schools and universities, as an example). If the government disappeared tomorrow, those jobs would as well because they do not provide a service or product to customers; they only provide papers to the government (which then takes money from people so it can pay other people to shuffle the papers).
Long story short, his argument is that the reason why so many people are unhappy with their jobs--and this became very obvious during Covid lockdowns--is that they have BS jobs and deep down inside, on some instinctual level, they know it and it makes them feel dissatisfied. Like I said, a lot of people realized during Covid that they were working "non-essential jobs." That means your job is not necessary to keep the country going--at least in the short-term. But I think more than a small number of people realized their job isn't really essential long-term, either. And if your job isn't essential to anyone, then what the hell are you doing with your day? You might as well be in a Puritan prison walking on a treadmill all day--busy, but producing nothing.
This is my last week in my legal job. I'm taking a year sabbatical to take care of family obligations and myself. I am working on growing a side hustle into a business and my plan is not to go back to legal work when the year is up. I have to admit, I've been seeing "help wanted" signs at the grocery store and at local factories and warehouses for a while and I have found myself thinking, "Hmm, that sounds better than my desk job." Some of those factory jobs pay almost what I'm making now and I'm sure they have a lot more room for advancement. I'd rather have more time in my life to pursue what's meaningful to me, but it's nice to know I have options. Non-BS options.

I'm a chemical engineer. I was constantly between jobs. 2 years here contract ended, 1 year there - I left, 2 years there, 1.5 year there. I learned a lot. I had really toxic people around me, job gave me a lot of stress. I found out that people who like to work in a team are +50 yo, most often than not are there to manipulate or to hurt young people.
Now I opened my own company and found a supporting network. I work more than I used to, but I know I work for myself. At the same time I go out and stop working whenever I want. If I was working late last day, I won't push myself today.
I am a hard worker just not on demand.

After getting out of the military, I worked whatever job I could. Most of the jobs I took were call center jobs. And it killed my soul. I hated the customers, the pay was terrible, sitting in a cubicle made me wanna shoot kittens, and I fucking love cats. So I decided after leaving my last call center job to switch to manual labor jobs. Currently I am a Materials Tester for construction, and it's a pretty sweet gig. The pay is middling but the job itself is pretty cool. You learn about how construction works. I'm glad you're happier.

Technology is slowly crushing everyone's souls. I loved my career in the beginning but the work has changed and it's morphed from mechanical work into coding, IT work and a phony statistics focused office environment which I no longer enjoy. Every Sunday is just dreadful thinking about Monday. There's no room or tolerance for mistakes, creativity and you can never be wrong. IT work and scripting automated tasks is mind crushingly boring and that is the direction everything is heading in. (Automation, AI) Been thinking for a couple years now about what else I could do to escape and feel productive and fulfilled again.

It is such a coincidence that this video popped up in my video feed! I work for the culture sector of a Municipality in British Columbia and my job was to permit filming companies and organize city events. With Covid, our department was pretty much dismantled and although many were laid off, I was redeployed to the city's Parks department. I will say that at first I was nervous and a little disappointed since it felt like a demotion. However I am so grateful that life gave me this unexpected opportunity! I spent one year cutting blackberry, pulling ivy, planting, spending entire days blowing leaves of beautiful trails, picking up garbage by the beaches and I absolutely loved it.
It was a little tough getting used to the cold and all the rain, it is a mental game sometimes, but even that seems like such an accomplishment. I had never done anything like this and as an "office girl" it felt very empowering to roll up my sleeves and do work that I never in a million years thought I would do. Everything that you describe regarding comradery, connection with your team, doing physical work that feels good, being outside in beautiful forests, is exactly what I experienced. Last month they moved me back into working three days in the office and two days in parks and I am sincerely missing being outside.
Never in a million years did I think that I would have thoughts that working in this field would perhaps bring my life more fulfilment. I have always loved being outside, active, connecting with people, nature and it does make me question why growing up I never saw this kin of job as an option.
    Love the video!

A few years back I got my certification to be a yoga instructor and never did anything with it. I’ve been in corporate Sales for 17 years (I started at 19 in college). After I took a lay off during Covid I needed to find an additional income. So I started to teach yoga classes virtually. I love it so much that I didn’t go back after I was called back and found a way less stressful weekly job at a different company to help substitute my income as well as teaching classes. Just get a plan and do it! It’s so worth it. I also am making way more money and can enjoy my work.

Or do you choose a lower paid job like bricklayer, nurse, military, retail etc and are up and about all day meeting new people that aren't as toxic in the corporate world.

And I am tired of sales quotas, metrics and always on edge. The corporate life is for your recent college grads and those ages 28-50. 25+ years of outside sales wears on you.
