I should definitely try this mod out. It looks pretty cool. I like how there’s alternate endings (although, the BEST Half-Life alternate ending is the one where Mitchell meets multiple Gordons and his brother Adriane Shepherd on the tram in stasis😂. That’s my headcanon right there because it’s just so funny). A mod that I really liked was Point of View where you play as a Vortigaunt. It certainly has its issues, but it’s a very interesting change of pace. I really liked the fan made lore that mod has to flesh out the Xen inhabitants. Sure, it’s pretty weird when you compare it with canon. But, keep in mind that this mod came out before Half-Life 2 was even a thing so the modder had to make a bunch of stuff up and it only retroactively appears strange when you compare it with what we have now. After a while it gets kind of repetitive using lightning as to attack, but there’s some cool weapons and once the mod starts to overstay it’s welcome it ends. Even though the mod has its issues I still really liked it. Too bad Black Mesa’s version of the Source engine has weird limitations that prevent you from drastically overhauling the game, and you can’t edit preexisting ai or add new enemies. Having an expanded Point of View remake that takes advantage of the more advanced engine to have better scripting and environmental storytelling would’ve been AMAZING. I personally think a fair amount of the original story beats and lore could be salvaged with tweaks here and there.
I really need to catch up on Hunt Down the Freeman, when it will be in sale ill buy it and play it. Feels like its canon nowadays. POV is amazing, im a big fan of Xen in general and more Xen to explore its always a good thing (although some parts of POV are in BM too). Theres this Xen Warrior mod too where you are an Aliem Grunts, wanted to try it but I cant fire my hornet gun for some dumb reason
From what I’ve seen and heard Hunt Down the Freeman seems to be going through somewhat of a redemption arc. A group of devs and modders have been fixing bugs, improving the level design, making it so you actually utilize the new features like climbing and going prone, and some other things. They don’t seem to have changed up the story, but I personally think that part should stay the same since it’s funny just how bad it is. I REALLY hope that the fan Episode 3 Infinite Finality mod at least references HDTF. Now that would be funny! Yeah, Xen was a really cool location they should’ve done more with. Sure, the jumping puzzles were kind of annoying (thankfully there’s quick save), and it’s clearly unfinished. But, it added a bunch of cool stuff into the lore. Black Mesa did a good job of reworking Xen for the most part. Unfortunately, it drags on a little bit too long, and there’s some areas that didn’t work super well. Circling back to POV, if there were to be a remake something I’d LOVE to see would be for the area starting Xen area to have a Vortigaunt village as the backdrop for the chase sequence. There could be some Vortigaunts being put down and it shows what will happen to the player character if he fails to get back that Sphere. There’s a lot of cool stuff they can do with that. One thing that needs to happen would be for the player to regain health more ways because lightning and those healing pools are unfortunately the only ways to heal yourself. Those extra Decay missions where you play as two Vortigaunts allow you to regain health through melee incentivizing the player to do more than just shocking enemies. Xen Warrior is definitely pretty cool. That’s too bad that the hornet gun wasn’t working for you. It would’ve been cool if the modder added a charge attack where you sprint through enemies, and use it to break through certain walls. That would’ve been a cool way to make you feel like this powerful alien soldier.
