Been there. I am a Russian speaker, and at first we got the localization of the same quality, if not worse. Bad acting, bad recording quality, bad translation, and even messed up replica orders. However, when Orange Box aired, other studio remade it, while keeping (&fixing) the hits of the old version (For example, G-man and Grigoriy were originally actually very good), and now we have something decent. Not perfect, but it was on point at the time.
I should check out the russian version of HL2. as an ex dota player ive familiarized with a lot of russians and the way the russian language sounds seems fit for Gman and Breen). Now that you made me think abt it, I forgot about Grigoriy!
I remember the old russian dub and sweet Jesus it's awful. Mic quality is worse than 1.6 as well as voices just not fitting characters at all. It felt like a fucking real life vortigaunt voiced Alyx (I'm exaggerating but still).
I kind of like the idea that they wanted to world build City 17 as being East European, but in what fucking world would they speak Italian in East Europe while being ruled by a man who was from fucking New Mexico.

What are your thoughts on the Portal 2 song Cara Mia Addio and how throughout the course of the game it’s heavily implied that Chell is the daughter of Karolyn (Glados) and Cave Johnson? It’s definitely an interesting theory that makes the most sense. Since the song’s language is Italian and Portal is in the same universe as Half-Life I thought I’d post this here. Recently played through Portal 2 again and it was a lot of fun.
I know I said that it’s really interesting being in the other side of the fence when it comes to localizations in the previous Half-Life Italian language video but I think it’s worth repeating. Its also weird when key elements of lore are mistranslated causing people to develop entirely the wrong idea about the story (from what I hear that happens all the time with the English translations for Zelda games). It would definitely be interesting what other games got a similar treatment. I personally think that in this case the voice actors having different accents would work given what we know about the lore. After the 7 Hour War the Combine relocated the surviving population to various locations where they’d work in different industries to serve the regime. The Combine are also constantly relocating people as a way to prevent them from forming connections with others and rebelling. Unfortunately the voice acting was bad (since I can’t speak Italian I just have to take your word for it).
Yea I did remark on how it makes sense for the characters to have different accemts, the problem is that the accents are.not well replicated and instead of sounding from their country of origin they sound as if they have extra chromosomes. They probably asked the voice actor to improvise a foreign accent and this is the result
I think it might be my fault that I missed that because I watched half of this video yesterday before something got in the way. I probably forgot some of the stuff you said because it f that. I agree with what you’re saying about how bad voice acting and bad delivery can definitely kill immersion.

@@jstreo5094 Well I haven't heard the hl2 in Spanish apart from a bit from the start, I was talking more about the hl1 translation, but I can agree they feel emotionless although I think that would be in the uncanny valley category (atleast for me)
Mossman and Alyx should've swapped voicelines. Mossman does sound like she's from a teenage novie girl abd Alyx sound like an old pissed off Karen. Also Italian Barney is voiced better than original and you can't change my mind :D
welp , on my part, i can assure you that the french version is barely better, alyx sounds emotionless in nearly all of her lines , mossman sounds like an A.I. and the npcs sound annoyed in most of their lines , barney is not really well traduced and kleiner has a weird voice but eli and dr breen actually sounds great edit: gman also sounds decent

if the eastern european was well replicated it could have been cool, but the way they do it sounds very bizarre in my language

The Italian voice of Barney sounds like the English voice of Kliener
As a native spanish speaker, i can say that the spanish translation was also bad, even terrible compared with HL1 spanish dub and translation.
I know Spanish and for my next HL1 and 2 playthrough ill try to set the language on that to take a look myself! Thx for sharing
Everything in the Spanish version sound either in the uncanny valley or sound like the characters are speaking to a child

I believe Valve didnt put a lot of money on the table to make these localization. Do they have an accent from Eastern Europe in the french one?
@StormTheSource eli has an african accent and dr breen sounds like a guy from switzerland but aside from that, no accents
The bad guys (Gman, Overwatch voice, Combine soldiers), are pretty decent , but god, Mossman and Alyx are the worst.
