completely agree with you on the striders and helis. you only carry 3 rockets at a time, meaning you are either always short on ammo, or right next to an ammo crate. in hl1 with things like helis and tougher enemies, it was "use all your tools", but in HL2 it's more "just use this one tool."

I didnt mention the few ammo capacity and the hunt for ammo crates cause I already did it in one previous video, but yea, only 3 rockets its annoying as hell. The same applies to the Revolver and Crossboe capacity (12 against 36, 10 against 50 bolts in hl1)

The Antlion caves and Hunter fights were probably my favorite parts of Episode 2. They did a really good job of changing up the gameplay right when things were starting to get repetitive. I just wish we would’ve had a few more enemies thrown into the mix (HL2 Beta’s catalog of Synths and Xen fauna comes to mind).
For whatever reason I actually preferred the HL2 chopper fight in the airboat over the one in Episode 2 (too bad Water Hazard didn’t have Bullsquids running/swimming around the canals. They would’ve enhanced the chapter and tied things in better with the original). I also liked the Gunship fights because they required you to loop your rockets around the thing to harm it. I’m sure this kind of things mostly just boils down to personal preferences.
Have you ever played those Turok games? I unfortunately haven’t, but I definitely will once they go on sale for a good price. Nightdive Studios has been remastering the third game and it comes out the 30th. I hope they do the same for Turok Evolution so they can fix that game’s various issues, while remaining mostly true to the original. Let’s hope they’re given the chance to touch up the previous two games at some point. I love how crazy the game’s premise is. It’s too bad we don’t really have completely ludicrous games like that anymore. I love how insane the weapons are and how the enemies are a crazy mashup of different things that on paper simply should not work well together.

I really dislike how you gotta aim the rockets to the Gunships tbh and never found it fun. The Water Hazard fight is conceptually cool, (you run away from the heli first, then take your revenge), but I dont find it too exciting. I mean its not bad but its not great either..
Too bad we never got an Ep.3, im pretty sure a lot of improvements would have happened and maybe they would have introduced the enemies you mentiones
About Turok, 2 years ago I played the 2008 one, but I didnt finish it cause it got a bit repetitive and was stuck at some sort of Leviathan boss. Maybe the classics are better? Havent been following Evolution much!.

Yeah, I can see that. Granted, I could be a weirdo since I like the gunship and chopper fights for the exact reasons you don’t. Although, I agree wholeheartedly with the Striders requiring too many rockets to take down (Too bad we didn’t also get a weapon that can punch holes through solid objects like the Tau Cannon to help take them down. As well as a larger ammo capacity for the rockets). There’s various features I like in other games for the exact reason others don’t (like the Drones in Halo. A lot of people complain about them since they’re fast moving and fly around, but that’s only really a problem on controllers. I can understand someone not liking how they largely negate cover and turn the game into a shooting gallery, but that’s kind of the point of the enemy. They’re supposed to break up the normal encounters. I also like the Halo 2 version of the Brutes because they’re broken bullet sponges who charge the second they see you, go vessel seemingly at random, and require multiple headshots to take down quickly. Unfortunately, 3 over corrected on their flaws and tried to force them into the officer role left vacant by the Elites. By doing so they made an enemy that wasn’t very interesting to fight. 3 also has an abysmal story that robbed us of the insane ending we would’ve originally gotten in 2 where the Arbiter has a complete character arc, Truth’s plan actually made perfect sense, and we would’ve gotten the “big reveal” that shows what the Human Covenant War was started to cover up). I also prefer Doom 3 over the other games because it has a lower pace, a horror atmosphere (although, it’s not particularly scary aside from a few jump scares), and the people in it have a realistic reaction to seeing literal demons manifesting in reality. Although, I will admit the gunplay could use a few tweaks, and the flashlight can definitely get annoying. Fortunately, various mods have fixed the game’s issues and build on what works. By no means am I a contrarian. I just seem to have weird tastes.
The 2008 Turok sadly suffered from the devs wanting to implement things that were popular in other shooters at the time, but didn’t really understand what made those features work in other games and said features go against Turok’s design philosophy. The older games are basically Boomer shooters. The first just has you going through all these large levels filled with crazy enemies and has you collecting stuff to progress. Its story is basically nonexistent. The second one improves upon a lot of the gameplay problems with the first, adds new weapons, and has a story but like shooters of the time it was more of an afterthought. The third game is more like Half-Life where narrative plays a big role and has you going through linear levels. You can choose to play as one of those characters with slightly different play styles. There’s also a prequel Turok Evolution, but it sadly suffered from a crazy development with the studio going under and it really shows. I’m sure Nightdive Studios could fix a lot of the issues that bogged it down like bugs, bad aiming, no checkpoints, and restoring cut content to better flesh out the game. I have 1 and 2 in my Steam library, I just have to get around to playing them. I LOVE how the setting is completely asinine. The games are loosely based on some comics of the same name (haven’t read them). You’d think with the resurgence of Boomer Shooters we’d see a continuation of the story, or a reboot that combines the best aspects from across the series. It’s such a shame the ip is dormant. Aside from the Nightdive Studios remasters. Let’s hope they fix up Evolution at some point.
