It's actually a simple effect on the model as far as I can tell, sounds playing from it tells the mouth to open depending on how loud the sound is. It even works when a player is broadcasting from a microphone and the model uses that same support (Counter-Strike 1.6, Team Fortress Classic and even Garry's Mod even though that's Source, just uses a simple command to flex the jaw based on volume if the player model has posing) And yes, for a massively modified Quake (one) engine, it looked way ahead of it's time for 1998.

French/Spanish/Chinese Nihilanth (including Freeman Line)
I was thrown off when the “human grunts” were replaced by robots in only the German version and nowhere else. I also most recently discovered your channel and I’m finding a lot of noteworthy interesting stuff about this game. Good work!
Those Bots be saying: „Who is Freeman?“ „Intern database reads: This BIO-Unit was part of the explosion.“ „BIO-Unit belongs to science team.“ „Possibility is high that BIO-Unit Freeman was reasonable for the early forced shutdown of many Mech-Units of this troup.“ „Accepted. The BIO-Unit has to be deactivaded as punishment for it's actions.“
It's fun how in the grunt speech "ground zero" got mistranslated into french and italian into "level zero" [of a building], probably because the guys who translated had no idea what the game was really about. Spanish guys got it right, though :)
Since I'm Italian, I'll solve the mistery for you for the Italian part: not enough time. That is, not enough time to make it fit with exchanges between the grunts. Happen to notice, lots of lines are either dragged out or sped up ever so slightly to make them fit. Plus "ground zero" is a very military, very English way of saying "epicenter".. But that does not fit with soldiers' radio jargon, and the test chamber is probably the lowest floor in the entire facility. The only way to make it fit over all would be something like this: "Chi e' questo Freeman?" "Uno con le mani in pasta!" "Uno scienziato? Un sabotatore magari?" "Forse. So solo che ha ammazzato i miei compagni." Roughly meaning: "Who is this Freeman?" "He's knee-deep in it!" "A scientist? A saboteur perhaps?" "Maybe. I only know he killed my colleagues." ("uno con le mani in pasta", "pasta" being "dough" and not noodles, is used in Italian to convey the image of someone being caught doing nasty things, usually crimes) So there it is
"Who is this freemam? he is killing my buddies, he will pay!" - extremely funny to hear that from soldiers sent to mercilessly kill all civilians in facility. Also German Robots is awesome. As for G-Man voice it seems that nobody except Spanish (and English) even tried to make him sound unusual, and this kills whole experience.
And remember kids: If you shoot a human in the face, they will sit down and shake their head in disappointment.

4:15 Shut up and sand me dad
wtf
15:42 Gravemind is that you?
i assume that translating gordon's speech was pretty easy
For "Freeman!" at the end: French one sounds like an older game, Italian doesn't sounds special since it's like a normal human says it, Spanish is more darker, German is like the French but it's alot darker and better, Chinese is really creepy, Korean sounds like French and Chinese mixed.
16:35 This is FUCKING SCARY!!!
Personal favourites (not counting the original English):
French Hologram
Korean HEV (for that autotune)
German Tram Ride
German VOX (sounds like an intercom)
Italian/German/Chinese Barney
Spanish Scientists
German HECU Grunt (fuck these are scarier)
Spanish G-Man (could he be from the Federales?)
French/Spanish/Chinese Nihilanth (including Freeman Line)
Iris Trismegistus English Nihilant in lit, especially when he says "freeman"
I like how each locale has a different style of voice for the HEV...
10:59 - 'Wir laden unsere Batterie / Jetzt sind wir voller Energie / Wir sind die Roboter / Wir sind die Roboter'
I was thrown off when the “human grunts” were replaced by robots in only the German version and nowhere else.
I also most recently discovered your channel and I’m finding a lot of noteworthy interesting stuff about this game. Good work!
Those Bots be saying:
„Who is Freeman?“
„Intern database reads: This BIO-Unit was part of the explosion.“
„BIO-Unit belongs to science team.“
„Possibility is high that BIO-Unit Freeman was reasonable for the early forced shutdown of many Mech-Units of this troup.“
„Accepted. The BIO-Unit has to be deactivaded as punishment for it's actions.“
Oh, so that's why there's a robot playermodel in deathmatch mode.
It's fun how in the grunt speech "ground zero" got mistranslated into french and italian into "level zero" [of a building], probably because the guys who translated had no idea what the game was really about. Spanish guys got it right, though :)
nice catch
Since I'm Italian, I'll solve the mistery for you for the Italian part: not enough time.
That is, not enough time to make it fit with exchanges between the grunts.
Happen to notice, lots of lines are either dragged out or sped up ever so slightly to make them fit.
Plus "ground zero" is a very military, very English way of saying "epicenter".. But that does not fit
with soldiers' radio jargon, and the test chamber is probably the lowest floor in the entire facility.
The only way to make it fit over all would be something like this:
"Chi e' questo Freeman?"
"Uno con le mani in pasta!"
"Uno scienziato? Un sabotatore magari?"
"Forse. So solo che ha ammazzato i miei compagni."
Roughly meaning:
"Who is this Freeman?"
"He's knee-deep in it!"
"A scientist? A saboteur perhaps?"
"Maybe. I only know he killed my colleagues."
("uno con le mani in pasta", "pasta" being "dough" and not noodles, is used in Italian to convey the image of someone being caught doing nasty things, usually crimes)
So there it is
Spanish Nihilanth sounds like an angry giant. I love it
Edit: Chinese one is terrifying
The Chinese and Korean HEV Suit sound awesome.
Laboratorio Mesa negra...
xd
LO QUE ME FALTABA POR VERLO TRADUCIDO XD
Sei lá kkkkkl
Nigga Mesa
Hombre obeso y libre.
korean gman sounds like he didnt slept in 3 days
the Korean HEV suit has a sweet effect with its voice. the Chinese one is interesting too.
