@Jack McAvoy Yeah, because basic maintenance really prevents a chassis rusting out - not. Where I live you need a roadworthy certificate to transfer vehicle ownership. One look at the front door and guard should alert to the POS being fit only for the tip. Bad ball joint, broken spring, leaking axle seal, no handbrake, and rusted chassis are all fails. The chassis rust means vehicle write off, no repair possibility.

"Three-amigos" on the ABS/traction control, leaking tranmission fluid, brakes were shot, suspension rusted, it took so much work (fixed amigos, rolled in new bearings, suspension, brakes, etc.) before we were even willing to sign off on it explaining to the next owner it would need 'further work'.

Great video and great advice. Coming from someone who inspects used cars for a living - i can definitely attest to the importance of having someone/somewhere you can trust. There is a lot of dishonesty in the used car business that tries to get passed off to my work place, i've seen every trick in the book when it comes to that. and I guarantee you they do not get re-sold. Having someone you can trust to look at a vehicle before you buy it is a must. You want that investment to last. And never forget - if it seems like its too good to be true - it usually is!
However, i must say - the biggest offender i see is "lack of maintenance" I see cars with 100-120k on them and they are absolutely neglected inside and out. What would otherwise be a perfectly good car - needing thousands of dollars of work because the owners just ran them into the ground or didnt follow the maintenance schedule (pay me now, or pay me later!)
I feel sorry for your customer and the fact that he is going to be devastated when he finds out the truck he just bought - just bought him. The frame issue alone is scary. I hope he is able to recover from his loss and i'm sure he has definitely learned a life-lesson.

WOTStang I just learned a life lesson...from this video. I have a 2002 F150 that grew up in MN and tomorrow I'm going to crawl under it and have a look at the frame. I have had that truck for about 5 years and have about 155k. First thing I did when I bought it at 103k was fluids front to rear tranny included. Haven't had anybody say anything about the frame but I'm kinda spooked now. Fersur to look under there tomorrow.

Yep, I used my basic knowledge to the best of my abilities when I bought a new car a couple of weeks ago. I had a trusted garage check it over, and do a full service. I'm now having the timing belt changed, as there is no paperwork for it. A few hundred UK £ invested now, hopefully to ensure an engine that won't go boom a few months later! Invest a little to save a lot kinda thing.
Mechanical items will degrade over time, but if you stick to regular maintenance you will have a reliable vehicle more often than not: or you can be stingey, hold back on maintenance and suffer abnormal, excessive damage later on.
I think a lot of people now almost see cars as disposable items, drive them in to the ground with no maintenance, then sell or scrap them, which is a real shame.

"Find a mechanic you trust"...wow...Wish there was one. We have about 12 to 15 independent garages by me (within about 15 miles)...ALL have horrible reputations...I don't trust dealerships (and yea, I work for a car company, but the dealership service area is 'technically' not part of the dealership, and are a "for profit" entity). We have a quite a few "chain" places that do work as well, but I don't trust those either (I've had bad luck at 2 of them, and the others have horrible reputations for not doing the work correctly).
When we were selling my old Fusion (2006) to our friends I told them "WE NEED TO HAVE THIS CAR INSPECTED" as it had 200k miles on it, and nothing done except regular service. They agreed. I told them, they should hear that it needed plugs (on a V6, that's an $800 job), a new alternator (it was starting to get iffy as I was having some charging issues, but it was a $1000+ job because you have to tear half the car apart to get to it), and more than likely a new battery (as it was 3-1/2 years old). I saw some tire wear that pointed to a ball joint (no big after 200K miles and driving on pot hole laden Michigan roads), it would also need tires since those tires had 50K miles on them.
Anyway...the report for the "reputable" mechanic. EVERYTHING IS PERFECT....I told my friends he was full of it. He spent 30 minutes with the car and came back with "perfect". Fast forward 8 months...Plugs, 2 Coils, Alternator, Ball Joint, Battery, EGR valve (that wasn't changed when they did the plugs, so another $800!!!!), and a couple other things. I felt HORRIBLE...and I still do. I KNEW these things, and I told them these things were on the edge...but they believed the "reputable" mechanic...what's worse? That "reputable" mechanic is a master mechanic, and is a family member. They still think he didn't steer them wrong. :(
Love your work, you seem to be one of the most conscientious mechanics out there. You, Eric The Car Guy, Humble Mechanic, and a couple others out there give me hope for the trade, but far too many of these guys are out to make as much money as they can, even if that means screwing the customers. :(

100% on point! On 4-8-21 I test drove a Fusion from a used car dealer and took it to a reputable auto service shop for a pre-purchase inspection. Auto shops were I live will charge only $20.00 for what they consider to be a pre-purchase inspection; emissions testing and a visual look over. I requested a fuller inspection of specific components. I was informed ahead of time that I would be billed the shop's hourly labor rate for the inspection I wanted. The $95 I paid after tax for that deeper inspection is money well spent. I was saved from wasting $6,000 - $8,000 on a car that needs possibly $5,000 in repairs.
Worn drive belt and tensioner showing signs of improper tension on belt, a sunroof that will went but not retract at all, dark brown color transmission fluid (pink or red is ideal), signs of dry rot on all tires, front tires have severe feathering and edge wear, vehicle pulls left (I noticed that myself as soon as I began driving it.), alignment off, one rear tire has a gouge in the sidewall, headlamp assemblies completely fogged (I could not even tell if the headlights were working.), leaking valve cover gaskets, possibly the timing belt as well, bottom and sides of engine coated in oil, broken passenger side engine mount, front tires pressure sensors not reading, spark plugs need to be replaced, rodent evidence under intake manifold with the possibility of wiring damage underneath the manifold, and stored codes although the check engine light was not on (Engine P0480-00, Transmission P0480-00, Tire Pressure Sensor Fault B2872, Right Front Seat Heater B1032-14, and Left Front Seat Heater B1030-14.) The dealers feigned ignorance when I showed them the report. I am not even upset. Their shady dealings are between then and God!
And oh, I almost forgot! This car just "passed" inspection in December 2020 when inspected by a dealership's service department before being auctioned off. My mechanic says the car would pass the emission test at this time but possibly would not pass the state safety inspection due to the broken engine mount, the tires, and the headlamps.
Folks, do yourselves a favor and spend the money on a real pre-purchase inspection at a qualified and honest mechanic who will straight up advise you against buying what will certainly become a headache and a money pit. I so appreciate the mechanic who conducted my pre-purchase inspection. Now back to the drawing board searching for another car.

Unfortunately once you buy and hand the money over, it's over. It's a 13 year old vehicle. 98% of uses car lots will tell him to leave or they'll call the police if he tries to get his money back. The other 2% would offer to let him trade it back in on another truck that's double priced and only give him pennies on the dollar for trade in.
I hope he got this truck cheap, like $2,000, but I'm sure it was $5,500 or some crazy price.
The truck easily needs $10,000 worth of work.
I'm glad I live here in Arkansas where 40 year old cars still look brand new underneath.
This is just sad. I'd bet you $100 that the previous owner was made aware of these issues as he tried to trade it in and saw and agreed with the rust and such and their for accepted scrap yard trade in value, $1,000 and then the car lot didn't even do one maintenance item on the truck or take it in to a shop to have anything done and documented on it, and then quickly pulled the truck around and slapped $6999 on the windshield and probably took $5,500 cash for it. It's income tax time and car lots are goimg wild right now taking people's tax $$$ for over priced garbage bc people don't look at the vehicle because it's "free" money anyway.
Sad and this should be illegal.
Now if the used car lot disclosed all these issues to the buyer in the buyer still bought the truck for a fair market Price with all these problems then the deal was fair.

The concept of "designed service life" is the problem theses days. They intentionally build things with a short service life knowing full well things will go bad at the end of warranty. And then they have the nerve to suggest their product is better or of higher quality than something built in China, Korea, or elsewhere because it was built in the USA. Its total bunk! I was floored when at a social gathering in the late 1990's, a Ford engineer told me that they build their vehicles to last 36 months without major problems. I questioned him to be certain i understood him. Bottom line was, they build vehicles to last 36 months. After that, major systems are expected to fail. GM and Chrysler are no different. I guess building things that go to the junk yard in five years is their idea of helping preserve planet Earth too.

Brain knows best, the best advice all you fellow youtubers want is listen to Brian, this guy knows what to look for and what to diagnose, these are free tips on all vehicles, make yourself a checklist when doing a purchase, bring it to a shop spend that $280 inspection, ask the mechanic or owner if he can follow along on what he looks for and bring your own checklist, search for codes or pending codes, test your engine, electrical, suspension, check all your fluids if they have been changed (if they are original owner), be brief and ask what it was used for prior to the sale, spend that $280-$380 on full front to back inspection, this truck was a prime example how much it will go up, sure it could of been just bad brakes and suspension, and catalytic converters done, but in most cases watch out for the "UNKNOWN" this truck he demonstrated needs over $8500+ in work major work being structure of the truck frame. Pay the inspection fee and save yourself a headache this goes not only for Ford, all brands and makes and models (especially in salty areas that have vehicles for sale)
i always follow his videos from his oldest videos, great tips, tricks and troubleshoot short cuts etc i get from him.

I'd also compression check the engine. you could do all that work to make the truck roadworthy only to have the engine or transmission fail later on.

Now retired, I'm a former GM service tech (ASE & GM Master Certifications) who regularly performed inspections of vehicles traded in and bought at local auctions---to go to the used car lot as an "inspected used car" or the treasured "GM Certified Used Car", all the failed/declined units went to the wholesale lot for quick disposal. We could perform very 'minor' repairs and full sets of tires, providing there were no other problems. Any frame damage, engine or trans leaks, major structural damage or repaint automatically failed the unit.
CAVEAT (BUYER BEWARE) ---no dealership will allow for any teardown to determine internal condition of parts, filters or fluids (example: sludge buildup in the valve train, heads, oil/trans pans) SO, IF YOU BUY THIS CERTIFIED USED CAR, and 4k miles later your lower bearings start knocking you probably won't get assistance after "you" authorize the "tear down to inspect/ determine cause of failure, example: if they find sludge built up. Before you buy any extended warranty make damn sure you understand the TOC, commonly called the "terms & conditions of the contract". The owners manuals will list all of the manufacturer's maintenance intervals/requirements and rest assured that when push-comes-to-shove, VERIFIABLE DOCUMENTATION SHOWING MAINTENANCE PERFORMED AS REQUIRED (since new or the last factory authorized repair) will be the saving grace for you and your wallet.

Very good video. Been there done that. A couple years ago I purchased a 2006 F150 from a Chrysler dealer's used lot. Within a couple days it started to knock really bad, missfire, and run ragged. I took it back to see if they could offer me any assistance. They said it needed a timing chain set along with new plugs and several other items to the tune of over $5000. I asked if I could trade it in on another vehicle. I was quickly told that they didn't want that truck back at any trade value. I took the truck to a Ford dealer and they gave me $3000 scrap value towards a new one. I should have bought new in the first place.

It is possible to buy a good used vehicle and it's also possible to buy a really bad new vehicle. Personally, I'd rather buy used as whatever chronic early life manufacturing problems it had will likely be resolved and you avoid loosing 30% value from just driving it off the lot. Just need to get used vehicles throughly inspected and always bring a code reader & flashlight with you. Alternatively, buy CPO w/warranty or do the Doug DeMuro Carmax thing - still cheaper than buying new.

Saving the 30% or so for used there is still that risk of getting someone else's problem or that it was never serviced when it was supposed to be.

You know what, with 200k miles on it, some of those things are to be expected as 'wear and tear' - ie the tires, seals, the ball joints, and even the springs. Those frame rails though are a definite deal breaker. At this point, I would call that truck a 'parts vehicle'.
