      I have a 2006 f250 that i spent $4k and dropped an ATK Remanufactured engine in. 11k miles on the new engine so far and no issues. I dont know if they use the Ford Parts on thier cam phasers or not. Any Idea? They warranty the engine for 3 years 50k miles. The shop i bought it from is reputable, Auto Plus Evansdale Iowa. 5.4 3 valve of cours.

It has been nine months but if I recall correctly, someone else had made a comment regarding Ben Franklin's reputation for over-indulging in drink and debauchery (a response to Creig Mac), whereupon Miguel Moreno made a snide comment about Christians and Franklin and the founding fathers being Christian hypocrites. I made my comment to correct the record and disabuse him of the notion that Franklin was a Christian.
      Franklin was a great man who rose from humble beginnings, from indentured servant to printer, writer, publisher, scientist and finally a diplomat who may have won the revolutionary war by convincing the French to give us help (the blockade at Yorktown), but he was not a follower of any Christian faith.

    The one thing I've learned over the years is that yes you can use aftermarket parts in locations that are easy to deal with. An example would be a lock actuator or something of that nature. When it comes to a time-consuming job such as parts behind the timing cover, it's best to use Factory parts. It just saves you a lot of grief.

      The magnet trick does help except for the aluminum parts. I don't like that fact that the oil drain plug on this truck is about a half inch above the bottom of the pan. Luckily it only takes a few minutes to remove the pan and made changing the oil pump a breeze.

    Unfortunately we found too much play in the crank so we we had to order a crank kit. The thrust bearing was toast.

It has been less 20,000 miles and a year and a half. I am now tearing into my motor again. It is worse this time then when I opened it up the last time with all the original parts. Passanger timing chain guide was broke in two places and just resting on top of the chain. Broke at both ends. Then on the drivers side the tensioner is blown and slack in chain and tore up my trigger wheel. It wasn't worth the couple hundred dollars I saved! Multiple starters, alternators, radiators, new hoses blowing, doing the same job every year. It was awful. Oh yeah and stay far away from GE bulbs, especially headlights. They would last almost exactly one year. And they would ALWAYS die when it was like -10 so I'd be out there freezing in the dark trying to change that crap. Love your videos. I've owned 2 expys. A 98 and my current 04. I specifically bought an 04 because it was the last year that the expedition used the old (RELIABLE) 2V 5.4. My 98 had 255k on it when i sold it almost 4 years ago. I saw the guy driving it a month or 2 ago. It has over 350k. Original engine, nothing other than an alternator and regular maintenance items, i.e brakes, COPs,Plugs etc. Wheel bearings are still all good! Now my 04 only has 155k. It has rust on the rocker panels already. The power moonroof broke the plastic clip part. Other than that it's perfect. Oh, and the wheel bearings in the rear needed replacement when i bought it...........I suggest, if you're looking for a expy, go 98-02 if possible. DO NOT BUY 05 unless you want to do what this video entails! It is inevitable in the early 3v engines. Why didn't ford go like GM and just make a nice, simple pushrod engine and stick with it? To be fair, the 4.6L is a beautifully driving engine, I have it tuned for 93 octane gas. But when theres a problem, you can be down for days repairing it. I had to do two clutch jobs since I owned the car (2014), one from the puny ford stock clutch disc burning out (which I replaced with a beefier exedy clutch), and again for the slave cylinder/throw out bearing coming apart. When I took it out of the transmission, it literally fell apart in my hands lol.

SO TO ME IS SOUNDS LIKE BOTH AFTERMARKET AND FORD PARTS ARE JUNK (although I have never had aftermarket parts fail). My 05 King Ranch Expedition had multiple engine problems, all original Ford junk. Cam phasers, cam chain, chain tensioners, cam followers, rockers, ruined the camshat and cat....all shot because of week oil pump among other design faults. I love Fords, they make me lots of money.

    With so many timing issues on these 5.4 3v I think Ford should do customer satisfaction program and discount all the timing components related to this engine. In canada the all timing kit for a 5.4 3v is anywhere from 2,000 to 2,700 bucks cdn for parts and if you were to just buy the phasers separately at a dealer in canada they want 438-500 bucks cdn per phaser. Thats crazy on a issue Ford knows all too well about!

      Are you saying the Ford parts are just a little better than the aftermarket?

    • @FloorItDuh
      @FloorItDuh 6 лет назад +2

      Here's the funny thing about aftermarket parts. You get what you pay for. If you cheap out you are going to end up just paying more. There are plenty of manufacturers that engineer their products, test them thoroughly, and stand behind them. For instance FordTech here recommends installing a melling high volume oil pump instead of replacing it with a Ford OEM one. Why? Because it's well built and addresses the issue of low oil pressure.
      Obviously because of scale of economics, government regulations, etc, OEM's are somewhat limited on what they can do due to either longevity reasons, maintenance reasons, final cost reasons, and a whole host of others I'm not going to touch on here.
      If I'm building 1000 HP 5.4 you are on crack if you think OEM parts are going to suite my needs. It's all about what you are doing which is why you can't just throw stuff in and expect it to work. You have to know what you are doing and if you don't either learn and accept the risk that you take any time you do modifications or leave it to someone who know's what they are doing.

    I wish I had seen this sooner, it completely explains what happened to my truck. I had a 2004 Ford F150 that had the cam phaser 'tick'. A mechanic buddy of mine helped me replace the phasers with aftermarket MOOG ones. A week later one side came apart and we had to replace it, and the timing was never quite right. My buddy is a good mechanic and no one could figure out why, so I finally sold the truck for almost nothing. I've had this exact experience, thanks for sharing this video.

    This is spot on. just bout a truck that had just had the timing set done(small used car lot/mech shop) including the VCTs and Phasers. The truck still had a terrible start up rattle and even worse when at operating temp. swapped the VCTs and Phasers for FoMoCo parts(using your videos as a guide) and runs and sounds perfect now. The aftermarket companies just never got these parts right, you gotta go OEM. thanks for all the great info, much respect sir.

After finding kit online for some stupid 600 bucks we met in middle w dorman stuff for more than the 600 but less than oem. Said customers allways right. Said woundnt be responsible for parts. Well 3yrs later and 40 k on job has shit idle poo16 code w occasional phaser noise. They warranteed the vvt. Did crank sensor i never did doing chains. Also swapped cam sensor even though u said never go bad. No change second start money light andp0016. Believe its a phaser issue. My job went way further than 60 90 miles. Will never do another without oem. Bought all otc tools bout 400 bucks. Sit on my shelf. Customer doesnt want to spend any money so well see how long she lasts. It depends, quality aftermarket performance parts don't have the same penny pinching cost mentality as a lot of OEM parts, in fact, I would go so far as to say a lot of ford parts that were in my 2008 Mustang GT like the plastic clutch line, plastic clutch pedal linkage, super restrictive intake tube, and a lot of flimsy suspension components were junk. I pretty much replaced everything with aftermarket. However, when it comes to critical and specialty engine components, like the phasers for example, no one is going to be able to replicate those parts better than Ford.

      That's precisely how I feel about parts stores too. And half the time it seems you can't get the correct kind of fluids from the parts stores - instead they offer some sort of "one size fits all" solution. ATF is a good example of this. About the only time I'll run an aftermarket part is if I'm in a bind and need to get a vehicle going right away AND the part isn't too hard to replace in the event the aftermarket part fails. I won't use aftermarket parts on customer rigs - it has bitten me in the butt more than I ever care to admit.

    So your feelings on aftermarket phasers are quite clear, and seem to be justified. But i've been wondering something. As a tech that does so many timing jobs what's your opinion on a phaser lockout kit like the one Livernois Motorsports sells? I know it requires a custom tune on the PCM but the whole idea of fully locking out the phasers is just removing the possibility of failure down the road. By all accounts is a lockout kit is used then it shouldn't matter what brand of phasers are installed simply because they won't be able to move after the kit installation.

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  6 лет назад +2

      I never use lock outs, I will have a video on why soon. Also even with them locked out there could be internal failures inside the phaser and even the three pins on the front shearing.
