So this was my truck that I shipped to Brian. 2005 with 122k miles, oil changed religiously every 3k miles alternating between Mobile 1 and Royal Purple. Timing service with OEM Ford parts and HV oil pump was installed 20k prior, I was talked out of doing the rollers at the time by my mechanic. Truck started to progressively go down on power and noise would just get louder. I already invested quite a bit into it and would rather ship it to Brian to fix than buy a new truck. With this fixed I should be good for another 100k easy. 4k for service and round trip transport. Truck runs like NEW, Thank you Brian!!
I can see why you opted for Brian to fix instead of recycling back to original shop. They were ignorant or lazy which cost you more money to go back in and do it right.
I'm wanting to know where he is located and how much the total cost was. My wife's 2011 started skipping and I'm afraid that a follower has come off. Truck has about 186,000 miles now.

I had this happen on my 2012 Expedition with 65000 miles and it ate 1/4” off of the cam lobe. The Ford house replaced my trans valve body and catalytic converters. An independent repair shop diagnosed the followers and had it done in two days. The Ford house has it over a month.

I am literally waiting on my customer to pick up their 2010 5.4 3v that dropped a valve!!! I pulled both heads, fresh valve job, NEW ROCKER'S and Lifters!!! Had to Replace the 1-4 Camshaft, torn up due to failed Rocker!!! All New Chains, Tensioners and Sliders!!! New plugs and all Coolant Hoses and Drive Belt!!! Replaced Rear Rotors and Pads!!!! All Cost The Customer 4976.39 Parts and Labor and Tax!!!!! NOW BRING ME MY MONEY!!!! Keep Rocking It Out Brother!!!!!
Awesome video! I just picked up an '06 F-250 4x4 with the 5.4 3v with 124,000 miles. I was hesitant to buy it because of the failure prone 5.4 but for a largely rust free 4x4 F-250 $5,200 was too good to pass up. I know at some point I'll likely need to bulletproof it and I'm glad to know that such a competent tech is only 90 miles away from me. Keep up the good work and may your 2024 be blessed!
I had a tapping sound just like that on my 4.6 3v. I tracked it to cyl 5, pulled the cover and inspected everything. I ended up pulling and testing all the rollers and lifters on the driver's side. Nothing was broken. I was fearing a noisy valve so I went to pull the spark plug to put a camera in th cyl to see what th valves and piston top looked like. The spark plug was loose enough I could spin the socket with my fingers. A loose spark plug ended up being the the source of the noise. Lesson of the day, don't forget to start with the easy stuff first. 😩 Anyway, thanks for all the vids FTM.
Notice how small that "new" follower oil hole is = your oil needs to be exceptionally clean to get thru that hole. =Change your oil and filter more than you think you need to do and use a high quality synthetic oil. -And this person changed his oil real well (super clean engine).
This is my truck, oil change every 3k miles alternating each time between Mobil 1 and Royal Purple. I would also add a qrt of Lucas added with Miracle Oil . Couple hundred miles before oil change I would add Seafoam in the crankcase.
I have the same concerns about that super small diameter oil hole. I foresee the possibility of tiny bit of some carbon or lint or any other odd ball foreign matter plugging it up and you know what is going to happen then! I even wrote Makuloco about this and considered trying to drill them out. Turns out the steel is hardened and that small a bit would be breaking regularly. Makes it worse that the original hole was done before the roller bearing was installed and the angle cannot be matched now if I did attempt to redrill.
Working at an independent shop, I still see these quite a bit. Somehow on the last two, the camshaft was unharmed. Lash adjuster & roller follower failure. I work on alot of these engines and have seen some carnage. Thanks for the tips & tricks!👍👍
Apparently, you are a. s. e. certified to be doing these tuning fixes! This video clearly provides what my '08 3V 5.4L has been doing! Thank you for that short result! I, myself desire to "know" how it feel's to be a "master technician" before being labeled one!
Amen. I hate doing the same repair twice. Especially the hard, tight, knucle scrapers where you have to close your eyes in order to mentally see what you're doing. Right Part, Right repair. Cheap Part, You'll be back there. Later
Trailering all the way from California to the best of the best Fordtechmakuloco Brian the best of the best love you man I learn a lot from your channel…
That's crazy that someone had work done to have another problem. Then to have it shipped so far for to have a trusted mechanic diagnose & fix the problem properly. THE IS SAD WE DON'T HAVE LOCAL HONEST SHOPS TO DEPEND ON
Most definitely I will include that on my next timing job I had my truck for 9 yrs almost 300,000 miles and Thank God 🙏 still running like a champ!!! Thanks for all of your videos I learn alot from them. God Bless
i love watching guys like you who specialise in one brand, you guys know all the common problems and fixes unlike a genric mexhanic that works on all brands.
I followed this advice from your older video and got Ford Performance to send me some out of R & D. They were so gorgeous I played with them for a day before installing them 🙄. I bought and installed FP timing and phaser kit $535, Melling HV540 oil pump $140, solenoids $140, lifter/follower kit $285. 2006 Mustang 4.6L. the cams were fine so I reinstalled them. I rev to 7000 with no concern. Don't be cheap. Do it right the first time readers!!
I love your videos. I live in Texas so everything comes apart easy and no rust to deal with. I lived in New Hampshire for years and felt like more of a rust repair man than a mechanic. I own a 2014 EL King Ranch 4x4 that I did a timing set at 120k. I just bought a 2008 EB 2wd. And I bought it cheap with a terrible timing rattle. I have it torn down now and bought the parts with your links, including the oil pump. The odometer reads 220k and two of the guides were completely gone. Some chewing in to the oil pump, case, block, head, crankshaft tone ring, ect, but nothing serious. The engine had all ford parts and the phasers were still good. The drivers side tensioner had come apart. I’m doing all new ford parts including starter, water pump. There is only a small bit of scoring on the passenger side came caps. Only on 2 of them all the others look great, really great for the mileage. All the roller followers looked great and I was going to reuse them until I saw this video. Thanks again for all your great videos and info. I get requests a lot to make videos of some of my repairs and I’m still thinking about it. I have a great fix for electric running boards and a few other quirky things on fords. Maybe one day I’ll get around to posting them.
Brian, you are just fantastic in your content. A real gift to all the everyday folks trying to keep their under engineered or dare I say engineered to fail vehicles going. I purchased one of your tee shirts and proudly wear it and am constantly surprised how many people recognize it for your channel. All discussion that follows is Very positive and very grateful. Your candid honest opinion and delivery is very much welcome. Thank you and God Bless
Yes please make the 5.4 3v Bullet Proof video! I've learned so much and have been able to take care of many things myself on my owned since new F150 Lariat SC 4X4. Thanks for all of it!
Love the channel man! I just wanted to share a issue I noticed. As others have experienced, what comes up from the link says it does not fit my truck (2006 FX4). I notice that in the when the page comes up, it has the new part number in the search bar at the top, but its bringing up the old part for whatever reason. For anyone else who maybe be scratching their heads over this the way I have been, I'll point out that in reading the reviews people are confirming that despite ordering the old part number they are in fact receiving the revised part.
Brian thank you so much for giving back to the ford community. Because of your videos I have decided to hold on to my 2006 Ford Expedition 5.4 3v and so the PM to keep it a long time. Look forward to future videos.
I dont own a Ford neither i am a mechanic , i learn and try do do as much as i can but watching a real master mechanic doing its thing its so satisfying .. I love and enjoy watching your videos Mr FordTechMakuloco you are the best 👌👌
Good video ... I bought my '09 with 158,000 kMs. I have done the front end a couple of times, but never the phasers or roller followers. I just had them done this summer, at 596,000 kMs. While it has always sounded noisy since I bought it, I cannot believe the difference in how quiet it is now. In checking all of the old followers, there were only a couple that felt like they might be a little looser than the rest but not to the point they felt rough, even once the oil was washed out of the needle bearings. And once I cleaned a phaser out and re-assembled it, without the spring, it no longer would slide back and forth. I strictly use Castrol full synthetic oil, 5-30 for the past 80,000 kMs or so. I do have a HV Mellings pump. Personally, I think that this is a great engine, and with the service it has given me, how could I ask for more? I am surprised that there is not really much performance work done with it, but hey, we have all of the coyotes I guess !!!
@@ethandupit73 Ford ... only ... I stick to Ford parts since finding cheaper parts simply do not last. Perhaps they are cheaper, perhaps they are the same but downtime sucks. I ran my originals for a long time with lots of idle time so I just chose to go original. Besides the newer ones are upgraded.
as a retired Mechanic of 48 years i always used OEM unless Customer wanted different - and honestly when i retired from the field ( even Diesel ) the one Engine i never had or got the chance to Rebuild was the Zero set Static Timed Engines - when those started on the market was about the time i went to Diesel until retirement - any major work like this i would always state to replace all components not just what is wrong or it will be back for service shortly after with more problems -- i would even pull the oil pan on some cases to see if any damage in the bottom half of the engine ( crank shaft , end caps , connecting rods , Main Bearings ) my motto was if its not right it does not leave !!! seen many fast repairs go horribly wrong
my dad is getting an 08 from my friend who got it for free .it of course needs exhaust manifold studs, plugs and a fuel pump control module. so when im in there i figured id check the cam followers . it has 170 k on the clock and its in michigan all though the body and frame look pretty good i figure id make it safe and reliable for my dad. as always great video cant wait for a bullet proof video.
Your back has to be made of Iron! I did a full cam follower swap on my 2010 F250 with the v-10 (30 followers) in summer of 2020……my legs were rubber when done….and my back still hurts! Love your videos, immensely helpful for us weekend want-a-be’s.
Look into "mechanics high top creeper" if you do much on higher vehicles. Kinda like a ladder with a small ironing board for you to rest your chest on.
I really feel for you man I’m a mechanic out west when I watch your videos on some of the crusty vehicles that come in i cringe and it does make your job that much more harder but you keep at it brother appreciate it and Semper Fi
Man I see all these problems with the 5.4 3v but nothing has happened to my 08 yet. You are about the only person who fixes these engines. Everyone else changes whole engine it seems.
The engines aren't all bad. The weak point is the top end and not every one fails. They are a pretty damn good engine when they can go 200k+ miles and then throw on a new timing set and followers then go another couple hundred before the bottom wears out.
@@PsalmFourteenOne got to watch the connecting rods when you start boosting them. I don't know what year they started using powered metal con rods , I know that the 04 - 08 models are weak there.
@@scottb3637 I'm not sure how much is different from the early 4.6 2V engines to the later 5.4 3V, but those sure as heck take abuse! I had a bit of detonation with nmy 4.6 Mustang GT as I tried to tune mine and it never broke a piston or rod. Whew! LOL. After I ran it turbocharged a while I returned it to stock and my daughter drove it until she was able to afford another car. It still ran when she sold it.
Im doing a timing job on my personal vehicle in my spare time, I wasn't going to change to roller because they look good, but now Im going to order all new sets. I already found a loose chain which was starting to eat into the timing cover and timing sprocket I don't want to have to crack open the engine again one time is plenty enough for me.
I would love to see a engine rebuild video from Brian. He is so detailed. I’m sure the video would pay for itself with the views. I’ve repaired so much from his videos.
I appreciate your passion and detail in your videos! As for the “bulletproof” 5.4 video”, yes please! Planning to do complete timing job on my 06 5.4 and stoked to see it! Thank you.
Did you have the link for the camshafts for Amazon I am doing the time chain, roller follower and oil pump because I have the same problem of my 07 f150 5.4 like your videos
I'm doing a timing set replacement & want to replace the roller followers since I'm in there. How would I know if I need to replace lash adjusters as well?
Another engine that FORD should be proud of - thank goodness that you have the talents of a bomb disposal unit technician to work on them......what a pain in the butt !
Great info, I have an 04 V-10. In 2013- 150k I heard the startup knock, dealer replaced the rollers, 236k still running great. Thanks again, I was trying to remember what happened, 6-7-8 years ago, now I remember.
I bought a Lincoln navigator with a 5.4 121000 miles, I replaced the lifters and rocker arms (roller followers) on the left side and after I was done put everything back together it sounded and ran real nice but after a couple minutes it started pushing coolant out the rad. No over heating as far as I know of. I put 800 miles on it myself since I bought it.
Do you think the head gasket blew just like that sitting there? I thought maybe the seller knew it and possibly put something in to fix it for awhile????
Brian, I can't thank you enough for your F150 5.4L 3v videos. I have one question regarding the new design of the roller followers. With the increased back pressure they provide would you still recommend switching to the Melling M360HV oil pump or do you think the OEM pump will suffice now? Thanks again.
Thanks Brian...hope to do this soon. Trying to watch everything I can on this. Have '06 5.4. Once I watch it enough and study my engine...sooner or later I hit a comfort spot where I'm ready to tackle it. Wish I had another little scoot around car though in case something horrible happens so I'm not stranded. Oh me. Appreciate your help. Jesus bless.
Hoping to start my 07 f150 tomiming job this weekend after I get done doing the brakes on the wife's 07 expedition. I have purchased your amazin kit with all the ford components I think ill be ordering these followers before I put everyhting back together.
I saw u removed all the R. Followers, did u take out 3 per bank rotated 180 the crankshaft and took the rest out, or did u just used the wedge and took all of them out? on your other video (r. Follower removal n installation video) you say to put in the followers that are in base circle rotate the crankshaft until next set of lobes are at base circle put the rest in, etc..or you dont need to do all that since u have it wedge or we just didnt see u do all that (rotating n installing?
@@matthewfogt2861 Good deal and thanks for updating my info. I remember he showed how thin the back plate was on the original HV pump and how it would flex and allow bypass which caused lower oil pressure that would affect the phasers. Glad there is a newer pump that addresses both issues.
I'm not so sure it was a mistake. The first shop skimped on changing the followers and probably charged the customer for them. I've been the victim of this before. Also, there was no marks on the phaser and timing chain where they would have timed it up. To me, that is worrisome that it wasn't timed right on top of it.
Love your videos have helped me tremendously!! Question I have a '03 Expedition with the 5.4 2v. Only 82k on it and been serviced every 3k. Just developed a knock in the passengers side valvetrain. Does the 2v motor have issues w the roller followers as well? Did plugs on that side based on one of your vids but that was not cause of noise. Any input is appreciated. Thanks
Sad that there are no competent shops between Yorkville Illinois and the West coast? Good for you but it doesn't say much for the rest of the automotive repair industry, good job, keep up the great work
You said the 05, older followers, didn't fail nearly as often as say the 09, 10 models, so if I'm swapping them out on my 05 with new ones aren't I getting the revised more prone to fail version, or, are the new ones a third revision that are even better? Thanks, great videos btw!!
Thanks I have a Major Noise 4.6 2004 Expidtion It lost oil PSI , so with 220000 miles. I better find a core and do a complete rebuild! Flat rate is 11 Hours to do the OIL pump! and Now I see I better do the Cams! Have a Great 2022!!!!
Watching from Yosemite, Kentucky. Great video as always! Thank you for taking the time to share your work and knowledge. I own a 2002 F150 XLT 5.4 4x4. Everything is stock and only have 72K on it. Starting to get a tapping noise on the passenger side of the engine similar as on this video but not as loud. Only when cold but after 7 miles or so almost disappears. Started about 4K miles ago. Hoping it isn't too serious. Again, great video.
I am lining up parts for a full timing job and bought the set of followers with lash adjusters you recommend. When I got the package I opened and looked at the follower oil hole....man that is sooooo small, it worries hell out of me that the tiniest bit of foreign material is going to block it and cause a burned up follower. The new style, if I am right, is 3L3Z-6564-A. The old style I do not have on hand to look at, 3L3Z-6564-BA, but some images on various parts sellers shows a large hole shooting straight up from the lash adjuster. This is in contrast to an angled hole that shoots over to the roller on the latest design. I like the idea of the directed oil squirt, but that tiny, tiny hole is going to keep me up nights. Does a guy dare drill out that hole a bit bigger or can it even be drilled if that is hardened steel? I am going to install the Melling M340HV pump and the old style steel ratchet timing chain tensioners so I suspect oil delivery will be plenty adequate and dependable even if I go back with the old style roller followers. I am thinking about buying a few more or the new style and see how they would drill out to slightly bigger. Any thoughts you would be willing to share?
@@FordTechMakuloco thanks for your quick reply and possibly you are correct. I do not know how long the revised followers have been in the market place, whether enough time has passed to see how they work out. Given that Ford has been the designer of so many problems in this engine and other engines of theirs I really have little confidence they are to be trusted.
I'm going to do the same thing that guy did it I need a timing/roller follower job done. It's worth getting it done by you rather then risk the idiots that say they are mechanics in my area of NJ.
I have a ford f150 5.4L Xl triton, it’s been knocking and rattling for a while, Timing job needs to be done, engine needs to be rebuilt and the wheel axel is starting to creek as well, it’s starting to do it more and more frequently as I’m saving up to fix it but my question is, am I better off cleaning it up and selling it or rebuild it?? I don’t want this to happen again in the future but I really love this car I love how it sounds how fast it can go and how sturdy and flexible it is around corners (for a truck), what should I do what’s my best option here??
My truck ( A 2001 F150 XLT 5.4 w/ 260,000 + miles) just started this ticking, So from your advice I should just take this as an opportunity to change the cams, rockers, and lifters? Should I also change out timing chain, tensioners etc? Water pump? The engine still runs strong. So your word will determine which way I go with this. Thanks to you, and your detailed videos I've been able to keep my truck running like the beast it was made to be.
I’m planning to replace my rockers an lifters on my 05 gt would it be ok to take the cams out to easily replace both? It’s my first time sorry if I seem stupid
@@Jay388 I took my cams out changed them for aftermarket’s if u don’t you’d need a special tool to compress the valve springs . Best of luck very easy to do.
Ive got an 08' with the 5.4, F250 with the noise about the 3rd cylinder back on the passenger side. 187,??? miles on the engine. I'm hoping this is what is wrong with mine. I bought it off the "Dead Line" at an auction for $375.00 , standing in the pouring down rain. Thanks for the video !!!!
At least everyone agrees there junk ! , if you can hold an air filter up to the light & see pin holes through it , it’s junk , wear out your engine prematurely for a lousy few extra horses , that garbage will never go in any of my vehicles.
I had a question about the link given here as genuine fomoco parts. When on the site I notice the country of manufacture was Ch which is a general no no for me for anything metal. Is this in fact where all the "followers" have been made on this engine in their stock equipment? I was questioning doing them at first but after reading down through these messages and hearing your strong advice I am doing them from your link. Just wanting definition between this upgraded version and the stock manufacturer source if you know it. A new you tube member.
What about the lifters? Have you seen em go bad on the 5.4 2004-2008? I did my whole chain kit even new water pump, oil pump, camshaft, rollers, but not the lifters, I probably should of but that's an extra 600 dollars.
On my 270k mile 04 I did 05+ cams and 05+ lash adjusters as the 04 cams where $300 each and the 05+ $115. Also did the m340hv and the small hole updated followers. Love the videos.
Brian, all your videos are so well done and extremely helpful....Thanks! Just to clarify, one can replace the rockers arms without replacing the camshaft, as along as the cam is in good condition. Correct?
It would have been nice to see how the follower bearing was made and how it actually failed. Did the retainer break, did the balls come out etc. I have had a very bad experience using standard bearings as cam followers but the failure in my case was a broken outer race. The procurement guys substituted a standard 5 ball bearing for the specified 11 ball, full compliment bearing which as no race, just a lot of smaller balls close together to lower the beam stress on the outer race. It sure would be nice to see what is being used here.

My truck sounds like this cold, and comes and goes as it gets warmed up. After it's warmed up for 10 minutes or so it's pretty quite. Would you suspect a lifter or can a follower do that? I will be replacing lash adjuster and followers at some point. The timing and phasers are all new ford oem.
Hello!!, it's good idea for timing chain kit, cam shaft and roller followers buy it like replacement from O'Reilly, autozone or those kind of autoparts??
Especially when it comes to timing components. The OEM puts millions of dollars and hundreds of man hours into research and development for these parts. Although, it seems they screwed the pooch with the first run of these roller followers. In short, if you don't want to be doing the job again in 10K miles or less, use OEM parts.
Was about to do a timing job on my 5.4 and I'm going to overnight a set of followers now having watched this video. Do you ever find the hydraulic element needs to be replaced as well? Is that something that usually doesn't fail and so its only on an "as needed" basis?

Anyway, thanks for all the vids FTM.

This shows you the difference i
a mechanic and parts changer . Well done my man !
Working at an independent shop, I still see these quite a bit. Somehow on the last two, the camshaft was unharmed. Lash adjuster & roller follower failure. I work on alot of these engines and have seen some carnage. Thanks for the tips & tricks!👍👍
question, where do you guys order these parts from ? I want to replace my cam shafts and all followers but Brian's link shows they don't fit my 08
Apparently, you are a. s. e. certified to be doing these tuning fixes! This video clearly provides what my '08 3V 5.4L has been doing! Thank you for that short result! I, myself desire to "know" how it feel's to be a "master technician" before being labeled one!
My Philosophy for over 40 years as a backyard Mechanic: Don't go Cheep, and if it's a hard to get to Fix, Replace Everything.
I agree, don't do cheap. You pay cheap, you will get cheap. You get what you pay for. There's no such thing as a free lunch.
Amen. I hate doing the same repair twice. Especially the hard, tight, knucle scrapers where you have to close your eyes in order to mentally see what you're doing.
Right Part, Right repair. Cheap Part, You'll be back there.
Later
Ford didn't come up with an update for grins they knew there was a problem.
I just learned this the hard way
Trailering all the way from California to the best of the best Fordtechmakuloco Brian the best of the best love you man I learn a lot from your channel…
Probably $2-4k to ship this to the Chicago metro area. But new trucks are incredibly expensive $50k + if you can even get one.

Another nice and thorough job (as usual). If only all mechanics followed your example, what a gift to customers that would be.
Yes, please make a "Bulletproofing" video for the 5.4 3V Triton. I'm bout to garage mine and prepare it for some heart surgery.
Hey which roller followers did you use? The ones linked in the video? Theyre $18 a piece and ik there are ones on rock auto for 4 or 5 bucks
@@ethandupit73 Ford ... only ... I stick to Ford parts since finding cheaper parts simply do not last. Perhaps they are cheaper, perhaps they are the same but downtime sucks. as a retired Mechanic of 48 years i always used OEM unless Customer wanted different - and honestly when i retired from the field ( even Diesel ) the one Engine i never had or got the chance to Rebuild was the Zero set Static Timed Engines - when those started on the market was about the time i went to Diesel until retirement - any major work like this i would always state to replace all components not just what is wrong or it will be back for service shortly after with more problems -- i would even pull the oil pan on some cases to see if any damage in the bottom half of the engine ( crank shaft , end caps , connecting rods , Main Bearings ) my motto was if its not right it does not leave !!! seen many fast repairs go horribly wrong
That bulletproofing video would be great! Thanks for the top tip on those followers.
my dad is getting an 08 from my friend who got it for free .it of course needs exhaust manifold studs, plugs and a fuel pump control module. so when im in there i figured id check the cam followers . it has 170 k on the clock and its in michigan all though the body and frame look pretty good i figure id make it safe and reliable for my dad. as always great video cant wait for a bullet proof video.
Do a thorough frame inspection on it. My 06 rotted from the inside out. It was too late to save it by the time it was noticed.

They are fairly easy to work on. The part I absolutely hate are exhaust manifolds.
@@mph5896 I turbo charged a 4.6 2V Mustang and I had to unbolt the motor mounts and lift the engine one side at a time to even get to those bolts!

Im doing a timing job on my personal vehicle in my spare time, I wasn't going to change to roller because they look good, but now Im going to order all new sets. You are the best! Thank you for all high quality videos and great content and knowledge. I'm going to tackle this job when the weather improves.
The engine was so clean inside, obviously well maintained, then the problem was a bad design.
I would love to see a engine rebuild video from Brian. He is so detailed. I’m sure the video would pay for itself with the views. I’ve repaired so much from his videos.
Good to see you got a big AC setup to cool down the shop.
I appreciate your passion and detail in your videos! As for the “bulletproof” 5.4 video”, yes please! Planning to do complete timing job on my 06 5.4 and stoked to see it! Thank you.
This goes to prove. Old school thought mechanics can listen to an engine along with computer help to find the problem. You can't use just a computer.
True
Did you have the link for the camshafts for Amazon I am doing the time chain, roller follower and oil pump because I have the same problem of my 07 f150 5.4 like your videos
I'm doing a timing set replacement & want to replace the roller followers since I'm in there. How would I know if I need to replace lash adjusters as well?
If they are collapsed.
You are the best Ford mechanic!
Thank you Brian. To clarify, the roller followers fail and not some other issue that causes them to fail. Thank you, Tony 2010 4.6L 3V.
Would you suggest replacing the Lash Adjusters too?
So I have a broken chain on driver side..if valves are not bent can I just pull cams off to remove foulers to replace chains
As a guy still driving a 2007 5.4 F150, I would love to see a bulletproofing video.
Love when he does the older 5.4 3v video
The big question is - Did they replace the oil pump with the hi-volume replacement? Something you mentioned in a previous video that is a must.
You want the high pressure Melling pump, not the high volume. He's said that several times in the past.
@@GeekBoyMN actually he made a whole video that melling made one that does both and to definitely get that one. M360HV is part number
@@matthewfogt2861 Good deal and thanks for updating my info. I remember he showed how thin the back plate was on the original HV pump and how it would flex and allow bypass which caused lower oil pressure that would affect the phasers. Glad there is a newer pump that addresses both issues.
They didn't replace the followers or mark the phasers and timing chain to retime the engine. Highly doubtful they installed a new oil pump.
I just finished a timing kit rebuild on my 5.4 and i don't even want to get paid to do that same job again
Great demonstration of Mastery. what a job dear friend. Greetings from Tijuana 🇲🇽 Mexico
FordTech you need to make a training video for the Ford Engineers and get paid from Ford. Get them to rewrite their maintenance manual.
That's a costly mistake..you are the professor on ford engines..thank you for sharing..Cheers 🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I'm not so sure it was a mistake. The first shop skimped on changing the followers and probably charged the customer for them. I've been the victim of this before. Also, there was no marks on the phaser and timing chain where they would have timed it up. To me, that is worrisome that it wasn't timed right on top of it.
Hey Brian, quick question. Do you replace the lashings as well when you replac3 the roller followers? Thank You! By the way, great content
Nope I just check them I almost never find a failed lash adjuster.
Love your videos have helped me tremendously!!
Question
I have a '03 Expedition with the 5.4 2v.
Only 82k on it and been serviced every 3k.
Just developed a knock in the passengers side valvetrain.
Does the 2v motor have issues w the roller followers as well?
Did plugs on that side based on one of your vids but that was not cause of noise.
Any input is appreciated.

You videos are the best. So thorough. Thank you.
You said the 05, older followers, didn't fail nearly as often as say the 09, 10 models, so if I'm swapping them out on my 05 with new ones aren't I getting the revised more prone to fail version, or, are the new ones a third revision that are even better? Thanks, great videos btw!!

I have installed thousands of these and never an issue. You are overthinking this one.

The kit you linked (Ford 3L3Z-6564-BA Rocker Arm Valve Assembly) shows the old rockers with large holes and not the ones shown in the video.

I had a question about the link given here as genuine fomoco parts. When on the site I notice the country of manufacture was Ch which is a general no no for me for anything metal. Is this in fact where all the "followers" have been made on this engine in their stock equipment? Hey man! I will definitely be waiting for the bulletproof video, thanks!!!
Just regular needle bearings like any other roller follower.

I only like to buy OEM parts. Whether it’s for my Yamaha outboard, my GE washer or my F-150! Nothing beats the original parts.
Correct the lash adjuster generally do not fail.
