literally the only video I could find that was in-depth enough to make me feel comfortable doing it myself.
Thank you!
Man this looks like fun. 2 things:
1. Thought I would be playing with a different type of phaser in 2020
2. This video is calming makes you forget for a min that you are broke and so is your truck. Or else I'd take it to a mechanic.
All example DIY videos should be this clear and well simplified as this one ☝️
( not giving me a lecture about how you got started or your favorite vehicle 🤦🏾♂️ get straight 👈to the point. Talk less do more. Those who disagree, you can..
I am a Bangladeshi, I like your work very much .... I am learning the work of car engine in Bangladesh, I really want to make a living by working with good and skilled teachers like you.
I wish every mech was like this guy
kquigs100 If flat-rate didn't exist then every mechanic would work this way. Taking time to do the job carefully, resulting in the job being done right the first time. I wish I didn't have to rush through jobs just to make a living. If I was being paid by the hour, I would make sure every damn bolt, nut, and screw were torqued to the proper specification or the proper sequence. I would only get paid 4hrs for this type of job. That's $80.
Cannon Krebbs hey are you a mechanic i dont mind paying you good money put make sure my vechile repairs are quality do you want to work on my f150?
Mostly every 5 out of 10 machanics want to ripped you off
Not Doing it Right and saying they Did put the New Part's in. It's just the fk'n truth. They Kno it's a pricy
Job . And need lot's of patience .
Like I said there are Good Machanics out there. Just need
The Luck to be on yourside to find
Right one.👍
This video is 5 stars good stuff man you did it so professional
Thank you for the kind words!
Great video very thorough!
great product I've installed 3 so far they are pricey yet quality always cost and I haven't got any complaints of either of the 3 ever having the same problem again its been 3 years for the first one so like I said great product
No check engine light with these? I've gotta put them in a friends 5.4

Very good presentation. The best so far.
Thank you for the kind words!
Very good instructional vid!!
Perfect explanation!
WOW great video, makes me think I could do this myself.
Thank you!
This looks quite easy to do! Great tutorial.
It always does. Lol
It's getting to the cam phasers, the timing chain, the timing chain tensioner & guide, and the oil pump that are the painful part...!
Wow what a great clean video. Thanks
You're welcome
this is great instructions
Truly iconic
Thank you sir 🇧🇩🤝
Great Video!
- very well explained and procedure, thank you.
Once again great video
Thank you for the recognition
Very useful thank you
nice sharing~~tks a lot!!
Great video, keep up the good work.
This guy is Awesome Thank you so much for the excellent Video. It had everything I needed to know. Thanks again. RIp Wyane Static
We're glad to hear that, thank you!
@@LivernoisMotorsports Hi. I was wondering, does installing this delete make the timing chain and system last longer ? Is the engine less sensitive to low oil pressure ? Will engines with deletes last longer with less trouble and why ? Thanks
@@mvd4436 Typically speaking the timing chain system takes a beating when the phaser system fails as the shock load is being absorbed 100% by the chain and guides/tensioners. so eliminating this issue puts less stress on those items. It is also less sensitive to oil pressure changes as the VCT system requires a substantial amount of volume to work properly. the engines themselves as a whole don't necessarily last any longer, but the oil/timing systems do, reducing the need to replace them. so as much as we would like to tell you that it would be directly responsible for the engine lasting longer, the engine itself, if you constantly changed those failure points, would last a long life. But, since you are having to replace those items less frequently, it helps life for those items.
@@LivernoisMotorsports Thanks for the answer. One more question. Since you guys have seen your fair share of Fords... When you lock out a 2004 or newer Triton , does it become as reliable as an old 2 valve Triton generally speaking ?
Im looking for a truck and I never had problems with 2 valve Tritons. But the phasers are almost pushing me to buy a Chevy. If the locked out 3 valve is close to as good as a 2 valve, I'll just buy a good used Ford and send it to the shop to get locked out right away.
@@mvd4436 We feel it is, the only issue left is spark plugs on the pre 08 engines, but just changing them every so often is a big part of if you will have issues. But to be fair, 2v engines had their own spark plug issues too.
Wow, very nice!
Rafael Colon Thank you
Gracias por compartir su valioso video estoy muy agradecido amigo
No problem! Thanks for watching!
very interesting
Thank you
Very good video. I noticed that you did not remove any of the valve springs. I think the ford manual requires that 2 valve springs be removed to keep the cam from spinning once the phaser is removed. I guess when you put the phaser back on you can spin the cam back to where it should be by aligning to your mark.
Great tutorial!
Thank you!
Richard Skipper Performance is usually increased vs failed phasers and nearly unchanged vs properly functioning ones. And yes, our kit includes our MyCalibrator tuner so you can reprogram the vehicle effectively for this modification.
Great video and very detailed thank you. Is the cam phaser only on the one side or does this need to be done on both sides of the engine?
Thank you! both sides.
awesome video thanks guys ! quick question do you guys do the install kit as well i have almost 190k and starting to hear the chattering whats it gonna run me to fix it before i have to replace the motor ?
Are you asking if we install this kit here at our facility?
Thanks for your good information and a question in which places sell the tool and the actuator that blocks the gears
We sell them directly on our website. www.livernoismotorsports.com
Excelent brother....
Daniel Salcedo thank you!
On mustang 4.6..
When you are torqueing the phaser bolt to 30 ft/lbs then you do the additional 90 degree is it fine that I did the additional 90 degree with my brother holding the engine with a breaker bar so it won't be able to spin or is that over torqueing
great video .... wouldnt you reduce risk of cam moving upon phaser removal by removing several specific rocker arms? i think i also mark cam to head
Yes, and no. while it further prevents one set of issues, it creates different ones. so we elect to keep them in place
This was GREAT!!! It just made me realize I shouldn't do this myself because I work too fast and I will miss a step....smh
when u pull phaser, wont cam move? or equalize
We are considering this for one of our fleet trucks, just trying to find a mechanic that will do it.
One mechanic said it is too late (we just started feeling some rough idling this week). This is a better option than engine or phaser replacement and honestly probably worth a try. Thoughts on it being too late or is the mechanic just trying to sell me an engine. Btw if I can get even a year out of this it’s a huge win.
Typically it's only too late IF there is damage to the camshaft and phaser dowel pin area, and that usually takes a long time of ignoring the codes and noise. So if it just started, while it's always safe to inspect, that's highly unlikely.
Ive watched your video a dozen times until I fully understood the procedure. I have a 4.6L in my 2009 expidition, its no secret that the phasers get worn out at 100k miles. Question: What is the benifits of phaser lockouts ? rather than installing new phasers ? Thank you again for posting this video, its detailed instructions are perfect for the do it yourself person and I look forward to your reply.
+Silicon Valley Engineer Replacing the phaser actually doesn't address anything in regards to the failure point in this system. The phasers operate off of oil pressure supplied by the engine. When these engines wear, and age oil pressure naturally drops. Because of this, the phaser no longer has sufficient oil pressure to operate correctly. Now, the oil pressure is plenty to still operate the rest of the engine safely, but not feed the high demand of the phaser. The reason you see people claim that replacing the phasers helped is that you have a brand new part with zero wear on it, so it's operating at maximum efficiency, but since it has to pick up the slack for the rest of the engine it can fail within hours again. This is why our lockout is the only permanent fix for the phaser system.
+Livernois Motorsports Very interesting discussion, thank you for your reply.
+Silicon Valley Engineer You're welcome
Will the lock out fix a bad phaser? Or is the lock out designed to prevent failure of a good phaser only?
This is designed to work in either situation so long as there is no physical damage to the phaser itself.
Excellent demonstration. I'm still learning my ABC's on this dreadful creation by Ford, but why and how does a locked cam phaser help?
A locked phaser completely eliminated the vct system, therefore there's nothing to fail.
Could this procedure damage the engine or camshaft?
Make videos assembling the whole engine together using this easy step by step method videos.
It's definitely on our list to do
Great video! I’ve heard that I need a custom tune after the phaser lock out. Is that something absolutely needed or can it be skipped.. Thank you!
It's 100% required, and we offer the complete, 50-state legal system with tune.
will this affect the smog test ? ....well made vid thanks
Our kit is 50-state legal with our mycalibrator tuner
So question, I read that locking out the phaser will lock it in the full advanced position. Don't we have a kit that will set the cam at zero degrees so there's no issues?
do you have to set the engine timing to a exact position to take the load off the cam before removing the chain? i would be concerned that the cam would want to move due to the valve springs to an unloaded position.
Mike Brennan Mike,If you would like, we could email you a set of directions so you can gauge the difficulty level yourself. Please email is at info@livernoismotorsports.com
When removing phaser from camshaft do any valve rollers need to be removed to releive tension on the camshaft?
AL P Al, our kit allows you to keep the camshaft in place during install. There is no need to remove the followers during install.
On a 2004 do you have to discharge the ac to get the right valve cover off?
Awesome vid! Excellent instructions and proceedures. Now I'm sorry about my ignorance. I think I may need to do this by can you explain in what case would I implement doing this?? Thanks in advance!!!
This is a great solution for any Ford 3V modular engine that has started to have a phaser knock, or cam/crank correlation codes, or cam over advance/over retarded codes.
Где купить этот продукт?С уважением А
and the process to remove the rigth cam pasher?
Do you also stock the timing chain tensioners or recommend a certain brand, and what oil pump do you recommend ? Also do you recommend a new timing chain? vehicle has 170,000
we always use brand new production Ford components if we ever replace any of these. At higher mileage, replacing items like timing guides, oil pump, tensioners, and chains are always a good idea.
solo se cancela uno o que pasa si cancelo los dos
got my phaser out in the vise. i have the one long bolt style of phaser 04 150. spun my rear cover out of the way on the phaser. my aluminum lock out blocks all go in to easy. i dont have to push the block in all 5 positions. two positions are way loose i wont install in two of them for sure. other 3 dont need force to install. just pick the best one?
Correct, the tightest fit is the optimal position for these. They will not always need pressure to install.
Livernois Motorsports ya it's such little play. I figured oil will take up the slack
With using the wedge kit, approx how many hours should it take a competent shop to install the lockouts?
2004 F150 5.4L
Car Guy Brian 9h billed
@@garywalker2575 thats crazy. You got robbed. It in no way takes that long. But I can see shops charging that. Best to do it yourself. May take you 1 hours per side if your being slow and safe.
Hello. I plan on replacing my phasers, roller followers and lash adjusters. Now when i take the phasers off can i pull my cam shaft out and just simply lift the followers out and just put new ones back in place?
Yes, you can swap the old followers and lash adjusters out for new ones by removing the camshafts. They should be close enough to maintain the correct lash spec on the engine.
Just as a final QA check I would turn the C/S 720 degrees noting evenness of rotation. Do my timing marks fully align??
If my engine has a failed chain tensioner gasket will these lockouts fix the camshaft from being over advanced?
No it won't
So If I was to get the ford racing hot rod cam would I need to lockout the cam to keep good clearances
.
The hotrod cams clear with no problems. The lockouts would not be needed just because you installed these cams.
Tnk mr ford
is it ok too do all this without a torque wrench?
I just purchased a 2007 f150 with 109k miles for 1500 because of a engine knock/rattle when warm at idle. I will definitely be getting the lockout. Is there a specific brand kit to purchase for reliability and having all the proper parts for install? Like gaskets and bolts?
Our Cam Phaser Noise Repair Kit comes with all the necessary components, and is patented and 50--state legal
www.livernoismotorsports.com/product/LPP823113
Can the handheld tuner be used to tune other things or does it only work for the VCT system?
We have other tuners available but the included device is only for the lockouts.
I own a 2010 f-150 with a 4.6 3v engine. Could I run a new cam after installing this? the specific cam will be the Brenspeed Detroit Rocker. Also I see you have the option for the performance tune. is it worth the added cost in your opinion seeing you can no longer use a modified tune.
We do have a solution for performance camshafts, but it would need to be tuned at our facility.
friend I am from ecuador and I would like to know when this work should be done in the engine which would be the fault to know that we must do the work indicated
any time the engine starts making noise from the phaser, or starts throwing camshaft overadvance codes is when these should be done.
I live in texas dallas area im looking for someone who can fix the cam phaser noise on my 05 expedition runs perfectly smooth lots of power just the noise gets on my nerves
Antonio,
This is a package that the average repair shop can handle. We provide complete directions, and a turn key solution for this common problem.
Do I need a tune after this?
The phaser on the 5.4 2007 F150 I just pulled apart has all the same length bolts in the phaser. Do I have to do anything different when installing the locks?
There is no long bolt holding the spring.
Other than making certain you orient it properly when going back together, no. Just pay special attention to the disassembly process as you will not have the long bolt to reference.
Muy bueno el vídeo m gustaría que lo traducirán en español sería muy bueno para los que no entienden el inglés
Unfortunately, as we are a very small company, we do not have the staffing to be able to do so for this.
Can you re-use the wedge for a wheel chock on a grocery cart?
No they are wedge to yield. One time use only.
I'm experiencing a loud buzz and slight power loss and when we ran a scanner tool over the truck it pointed us toward the right cam phaser. Is this what is most likely causing the issue? We can hear the chain knocking slightly on the right side but just wanted to be sure. Is this What sensors should l replace while doing this? I know the tuner deletes the two on the valve cover but are there anymore? Will I experience better fuel economy with this kit?
Steve Moon II This kit definitely helps out all of the issues related to a failed cam phaser. Whether power, fuel economy, or noise related. It does not delete any of the sensors though, nor does it need replacing of any.
For what reason would you want to lock the cam phasers out? I know they are a weak point on this engine. Would doing this cause a loss in power and efficiency? Or would it not make much difference? A friend of mine has a 03 F150 with this engine. She's replaced the chains & the phasers in her truck. That truck doesn't get great mileage to begin with and it runs great. Hers is 4wd. Gets about 16 mpg. Probably 19 - 20 freeway.
The reason it to permanently eliminate the possibility of phaser failed which could cause severe engine damage. Most people report better power and economy over failed phasers.
Did you do the other side with the same wedge? In the same place?
That is correct!
If you have an engine analyzer can you do the tune up procedure after installing the cam phaser lock out using the analyzer?
If you're talking a scan tool, no you cannot. Our complete kit comes with the necessary tuner and calibration.
Do you have to do it to both phasers or just that one side?
Both sides must be done
Besides the obvious of noise reduction and reliability, what are the effects of doing this lockout? I would assume less power?
Actually you would get more performance out of it. That's why they recommend running a tune.
Do you use any special tool to hold the camshaft to tighten the phaser bolt? Thanks an very good idea of using this lock out system.
+gaston50952 No special tools needed, we typically just use another wrench or ratchet to hold the balancer bolt, to prevent the engine from rotating while torquing the bolt down for the cam phaser.
@@LivernoisMotorsports You should have mentioned that.
@@CARRJ142 We did in this comment, and it's been here for 5+ years. This is just a more basic item and we wanted to cover the items most people would be struggling with.
QUESTION...Do you recommend putting lockouts in brand new phasers?
I'm waiting on my new parts from the U.S. to come in. My Ford phaser was out 90° causing a really bad idel then a crank no start.
Thanks 🇨🇦
F150 5.4 L 3V 2006
Yes we do, that is the safest way to address these, by ensuring there is no damage to the old ones.
So all I need is this special wedge tool and I can remove the phaser without messing with the rockers? Can I buy just the wedge tool?
Mxmxv43 That is correct, the wedge tool allows for removal of the phaser with no other component removal. As for selling it separately, we do have the tool by itself.
What's the tuner for in the kit you are selling? Did not mention anything about it in the video.
Cody Jiron It's our MyCalibrator tuner.
I am looking for an aggressive idle lope without ghost cam tune for my 2014 5.0 Coyote. Any suggestions?
We have options for camshafts for these. Give us a shout at info@livernoismotorsports.com
When do you need and why to lockout the phasers? And what are the payoffs for replacing it vs locking it out?
im not super sure but i have seen a lot of articles/forum posts/ videos about this specific issue with ford engines. i think that piece doesnt perform as designed and causes the chain its affixed to to either under perform or over perform against the engines performance. which wares the part out over time.
does this have to be done to good cam phasers or can it be done to cam phasers already making noises??
It will work on cam phasers making noise
Question, if I install the lockouts without a tune will it go into some kind of limp mode?
indeed it will, that is why our lockout kit comes with a 50-state legal tuner
Do you need to make sure the cams are at 11 oclok or it doesnt matter what position the cams are facing?
you need to get them into their properly timed position as the video demonstrates, the exact position will vary based on the version of phasers and chains you have.
Locking out the variable would send a trip code to the ecm correct?
Without our tuning that's included in the kit? Yes
Do you have to program the computer after locking them?
Oscar Ramirez Yes you do and our kit comes with everything necessary.
I already have the complete kit (timing chain, tensioners, cam phasers, etc.). It's Ford OEM. Can I purchase only the blue lockout pieces?
+Jonathan Diaz Jonathan, this kit will not work properly unless it's used in it's entirety. Installing the lockouts without our tuner will result in check engine lights, and poor running conditions since the vehicle will be running in a failsafe mode. Since we package this as a discounted group offering, it's actually cheaper to buy it as a complete kit, rather than buying the programmer, and the lockouts separately.
Is there any tuneing to go along with this I have a 3v 5.4 with a banks tuner can I run the lock out with my banks tuner
Our package will work with any existing program in the computer as it extracts the current file and makes the necessary changes.
Just open the phaser put inside the lockout chunkier and install again in engine? thats all i have to do? no problems so far?
it's that simple, well along with the other steps shown including tuning it, replacing the phaser bolt, and making certain the engine is timed right
Do I have to do a tuning update if I do the phaser lockout?
Yes, our cam phaser noise repair kit comes with our MyCalibrator tuner and our 50-state legal tuning.
Does this put the C E light on
doug drefus they didnt mention you need to run a custom tune from a programmer
will JB Weld work in the place of the Lockout module 😂
It least just for a little while 😉
It will not unless you needed a quick fix to make it home as an example. We don't recommend doing this be best to purchase the cam phaser kit to fix that.
okay so I have a ford 150 I have 2 lock out... do I need to put those lock out on both of them??
Now that's a good question....second question does the oil & water pump need to be replaced while the valve cover and front cover are off????
Good day , please indicate the number of a party, I buy both the part to lock the chain, and the piece to insert into gear , I'm from Venezuela , I appreciate the information , and the video presented, my name Renzo Micolta , Thanks
I have a 2006 Mustang GT as a code of peas 0012 I changed the cams to comp cams and now that code won't go away.. I've tried a number of things including camshaft phase or lockouts that code still comes up I'm questioning maybe my brand new chain tension or or possibly the oil pump itself not enough pressure?? Timing chain Fraser's guides are all supposed to be new?
Unfortunately there is far too much going on to diagnose by description. It could be calibration related, spring pressure related, actual cam timing related, damaged sensor, etc.
Did you have to do any program tuning?
yes, our cam phaser noise repair kit comes with our 50-state legal tuning to adjust for these changes
Is it necessary or do you also recommend to replace the lash adjusters and roller followers that are connected to them when you do this?
While not a bad idea to inspect them, replacing them is rarely necessary.
@@LivernoisMotorsports Well I bought this truck to strictly tow a 20ft boat and engine has 228k, its a 2006 5.4 3 valve, no check engine light, has been extremely well taken care of from the look of the exterior / interior and was a 1 owner but the widow had no paperwork on literally ANYTHING with the truck which is why I ask lol and everyone in these comments and small bit of research said theirs have gone bad at as early as 75-100k miles. I just purchased it a few months ago and did not at all have any idea of this ticking noise culprit / cam phaser stuff. I didn't hear it when I test drove the truck because it has a loudish muffler/exhaust system and probably did not reach an operating temperature high enough to really hear anything but now since I've driven the truck for a while whenever I get next to a building and am driving through a neighborhood or sit with the windows down in a quite manner with no music or anything and at low rpm around 1500-2000 I do notice this weird ticking noise bouncing off of the surfaces / buildings around the truck from outside and am curious if it is this phaser issue everyone is talking about. I'm considering just removing the heads from the truck and inspecting everything before I purchase your kit. I know that whole speel sounds open ended but I would appreciate any input if you have any in regards to the diagnosis & at minimum I would like to thank you for at least replying.
@@CFlo93 Without hearing the noise it could be anything. These are also known for cracking exhaust manifolds
I did the cam phaser lockout on my 5.4 L three valve, and had a question about it.
Once the lock outs are in, is there any reason why the spring and plate on the back of the phaser still need to be there?
i’m not a motor engineer, but I do have a solid engineering background it seems like the outer plate is mostly there to provide centrifugal force that shifts the internals.
Once the phaser is locked, does it need to spring at all?
What are the flaws of a lockout? Mines in the shop rn for that
The spring is not needed, no. But, we put it back on to prevent potential confusion, or loose pieces in the engine if forgotten/lost.
Will this fix the ticking that make the 04-08 f150s sound like a diesel? Also, can I do this to the old phasers or do I have to buy new ones?
You will buy the ones that are to fit the 5.4L Triton V-8. To answer your question it will drastically help and fix that problem.
one question you need to buy at new. tool after the fix. ???? electronic. tool???
What does the phaser lockout do besides eliminate the noise. Does it fix the oil flow .
My thought as well.
