DUDE you SAVED MY TRUCK! My son & I just did this to my 2007 F-150 5.4 (268,000 mi) this week. I had the cam phasers replaced about 100,000 miles ago, but the problem recently came back. Just like you said, I ordered the OTC 6681 tool set, & the WMS cam phaser blocks & bolts with SCT tuner & pre-programmed tune to lock out the phasers. Your video was an awesome guide. Even your vice-grip 'mistake' helped us, because we realized which way the camshaft wanted to turn when the gear is removed, and turned out vice grips the other way to prevent rotation, and the OTC "stick" tool held the timing chains fast. After we serviced the phasers (THANK YOU FOR THE DETAILS!), we re-installed them using your video; no problem getting the timing chain back on perfectly. While we were at it, we changed out the spark plugs & coils (the cam phaser issue kills them). Then, we put it back together, we uploaded the tune with the defaults, just exactly like you showed in your video. Engine started right up, and I think it's NEVER had that kind of low-RPM power before! Thank you SO MUCH! I'd give you a SuperChat if I could figure out how!

There are two reasons why some timing kits take a crap after a year. Using timing parts from an oreillys or wherever, they can only get a hold of shitty Chinese parts. Lucky to get a year out of them. Other main reason these parts can go is not using a premium synthetic oil. Great video. Some times the blurry pictures printed on the instruction manuals can be frustrating. I have a Q about the SCT X4. Does it come with the option to delete the VTC or did wmsracing load the tune on it for you. I plan on installing cams in my 4.6L I asked SCT if they have a tuner that can reflash my ECU after cam install with cam phaser limiters and they replied " Thank you for reaching out to us today. Cam phaser lockouts and Cam modifications require custom tuning. Most tuners can do E-tuning and get you setup with everything you need so you do not have to go to a speed shop for a dyno tune."
Best regards, -WY That reply is telling me that the X4 can modify my ECU so I can run my engine after install ? Any suggestions?
Had shop do this at the same time they rebuilt the motor. Runs great but check engine light is on and codes timing too advanced cam sensor. Do you guys think they simply failed to load the SCT tune? Or ?
How do I know if it’s even worth doing this to my engine? Is there like a engine pressure test I could do to see if the clearances are within range? I got 240k miles and want to know if I should replace the engine or do this to the timing. To my knowledge it’s running great and smooth right now just has start up rattle when it’s cold and is missing some mid range power.

Hey Bsk garage, im tackling the project right now, and I can't for the life of me get the phaser back on the driver side. You made it look so easy but it's been impossible for me. I did just replace all the timing components though so maybe thats making it more difficult? Any tips on how to make it easier would be greatly appreciated
I'm no expert but from what I've read here are my conclusions. When you take the cam phasers off there is a chance that the cam will rotate to a different position, thus putting the engine out of time on that bank. The reason the cam rotates is because there is spring tension against the cam lobes coming from the valve rockers. The thing that is holding the cam in its position is the phaser, which is connected to the cam chain, which is connected to the crankshaft. If the position of the cam relative to the position of the crank gets altered that side of the engine will not have the valve opening and closing timed properly to the rotation of the engine and the firing of the spark plugs. If this happens the engine will run rough if it runs at all. The vice grip is there to keep the cam from moving when the phasers are taken off. You can position the cam in the right spot in its rotation so that the risk of it moving when you take the phaser off is lessened, but the vice grip, though crude, gives you extra insurance that no surprises will happen.
That motor is not prone to rotating clockwise, it is in fact counter-clockwise, and counter-clockwise is the direction yours also rotated in during this video. "Left" is not the left side of the vehicle when you're standing in front of it with your head under the hood, "left" is the left side of the vehicle when you are the operator of the vehicle (sitting in the driver's seat).
Think...think...cam lockouts are...spacers. Yeah, spacers. You can cut any slug of metal to size and have a similar result. Or use a stack of pennies. The phaser will not move...it will be fixed in position.

Its kind of contradictory to make a video explaining some procedures to help others and be soo rude when answer to some people that maybe doesn't have the experience to undestand some things, pretending that anybody with a question must be in his knowledge level.
I'm on my 3rd time doing the timing on my 2008 f150. I shouldn't have to do the timing every 5000 miles. My parts are in the mail, with lockouts. I'm selling it once I'm done.
Hi recently I install new timming kit an lockout camshaft now my truck no more sound like a diesel. But engine light sometimes turn on with a code p0021 and p0011. I ask a need update any software on ecu?
VCT phaser knock in the 5.4L 3V is a symptom of low base engine oil pressure. Oil pressure is commonly lost through failed RH and LH timing chain tensioners (they are oil pressure fed); and oil pressure is (less commonly) lost through base engine failures (such as worn bearings, cam caps, etc). The phaser lock out repair with custom tune will "fix" phaser knocks, but won't address any base engine oil pressure concerns, if any exist. A more robust repair would see that both timing chain tensioners were replaced (with updated Ford parts) and a VCT lock out kit installed; and then base engine oil pressure can properly assessed (as no oil pressure will be lost through faulty timing chain tensioners).
Delfino Estrada he had a link in his description to the programming tool which goes for about $300 I believe. And you are programming the truck to run without the use of the vct solenoids I’m retry sure.

Can i just install lockout without the tuner?
You have no advance,no power
No
So the tuner is the programing thing he did at last on video ?
I cant get the wedge to fit in the other side on mine, how were you able to lock the chain?
How is the power after the lock outs?
Its kind of contradictory to make a video explaining some procedures to help others and be soo rude when answer to some people that maybe doesn't have the experience to undestand some things, pretending that anybody with a question must be in his knowledge level.
Does the PC need a special configuration? Doesn't the check engine light come on?
I'm on my 3rd time doing the timing on my 2008 f150. I shouldn't have to do the timing every 5000 miles. My parts are in the mail, with lockouts. I'm selling it once I'm done.
mine lasted 1000 miles! All oem parts , i wish i would have done the lockout!
Have you done the updated oil pump
Do I have to do the phaser lookout with out the program update.
Great vid, thx for posting!
Brother where did you get the program tool
Have fun
I did the phaser lockout, but now my engine light stays on - any tips? I have a 2008 F150 4x4
We're you ever able to get the dash light off mine does too
How do the phaser lock out work for you ? I heard more power and mpg and you need a tune so check engine light doesn’t go on ?
Yes a tune is needed
They make a camshaft lock tool that works well
Are you still running this truck???
Hi recently I install new timming kit an lockout camshaft now my truck no more sound like a diesel. But engine light sometimes turn on with a code p0021 and p0011. I ask a need update any software on ecu?
sounds like you installed the locks but didn't reprogram the computer
@@TestDontguess ok I understand I need reprogram the ecu. How I do that?
Can’t help you sorry
@@TestDontguess thanks any tools or scan for do that?
Yes google
Great video

U$ 45 for 12 cam follower at Amazon , are they any good?
Can you drive with out doing the tuner ? After locking out phasers ?
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
What happens if you don’t tune it
Does this tuner work on multiple Ford 5.4 or for one specific vehicle and how would I get the instructions sheets after lockout phasers
The tuner is custom programmed to a special code on your PCM
@@TestDontguess thanks for the reply
I have two left head phasers, what r the timing marks on the chain supposed to look like
180 deg. Of the L is the R
Is the Phaser removal a must or can you install the locks right there? It seems like is duable. can any one please advice?
The spring may have a load on it, due to the timing chain, however that's a very good question.
is SCT x4???
I cannot understand why you wouldn't just replace the phaser with a ford part.
I can’t understand why you would replace a part with another one that is doomed to fail...... this solves the issue once and for all
VCT phaser knock in the 5.4L 3V is a symptom of low base engine oil pressure.
What tuner was used ?
What's the cost.of the kit + labor. I'm in south florida and happy to pay someone
mark rogge I can do the job for you I live in south Florida aswell
Do you need to eliminate the vct solenoids? Why if so?
What lockout kit did you use and how much did it cost?
@@gregbrophy5781 did you program yours or did you only do the lock out
A program is necessary for the truck to run right
@@forestgump3977 What is that you are actually programming? what is the name of the test or program?
Delfino Estrada he had a link in his description to the programming tool which goes for about $300 I believe. And you are programming the truck to run without the use of the vct solenoids I’m retry sure.
@@gregbrophy5781 Do you have a link or place where you bought the lockouts. I see comp has them but very expensive.
I have a problem i have the same phasers as you do with the one bolt but my phaser toners popped off and those three little pins are in and i thought about putting little pieces of metal in the holes and jb welding them to stay or putting a washer there and eliminating the toners completely your thoughts i sean you said the internet answered in your video that i watched 10x but you just looked at the toners and the pins and yours were fine but what if they weren't???? Help!! Any good ideas ??
Then they are junk and need to be replaced
@@TestDontguess but doesnt the lock delete the whole purpose of tge toner it cant move its stationary right??
do what you wish it's your vehicle i could care less what happens to it
@@TestDontguess ok i was just trying to get the whole understanding of the engineering of the phaser and locking of the phaser i thought maybe. And this is one of my many fords first gasoline engine and thought maybe you might of knew more then me on it now i know Thanks👍👍
Ones mans junk is another mans treasure!!👍👍the best lockout ever custom toner postion for a custom lockout. Rides out awesome power
Do I really need the tuner though? how much will this cost me if I go to a mechanic? Should I just say, hey I want you to do this thing I saw in a youtube video? Should I also get the melling high Flow oil pump and a new timing set done at the same time? how much is all this gonna run me
Shawn we do at Julio’shop for 3200 with M-340HD oil pump and new timing components
el gran savio salmon salami that’s high price considering a shop does it for 2000 with all new timing chain guides etc and melling oil pump with warranty and it’s ready to go next day.
I did the whole timing set with the Melling high flow oil pump two years ago and the phasers starting rattling like nobody's business recently. I'm going the lockout route now.
@@morecowbell20 were they Ford motorcraft phasers?
@@ryankeusch3972 No, and that is certainly one reason they failed so soon. I have since done the delete kit and couldn't be happier! The low end power right of the get go is amazing.
Thanks
So when you install the lockouts do they get installed in the bad phasers or do they have to be replaced. Also do the vet solenoids have to be replaced as well?
you must not have listened to the video as it clearly explains it
Ok he didn’t replace the cam phasers but he didn’t mention anything about the vct solenoids. If the lock outs are installed should the solenoids be replace as well to be on the safe side?
If he didn’t mentioned it mean do not change it
If you want to be safe change everything.
@@MartinRodriguez-gx9cs From my understanding the phasers can fail in more than one way, so I would change them too. The solenoids I think you can bench test them and visually check them if the screens are broken.
Just curious, does the check engine light comes on?
nope
Great thanks👍🏽
Hi,I’m about to do this upgrade to my truck will not effect emissions, I live in California and need to do smog test, thanks
@Charles Ball and who's going to know that man
@Charles Ball really who cares if it's not legal in California the state is not worried or is going to fix or give me another alternative to keep lock outside away from potential fixing my truck right and for good screw them I'll do it anyways
Brian of MakuLoco doesn’t seem to recommend using the lockouts. I’m curious to see if you notice any downside to installing them.
Nope runs better now than the engine ever has. You can either keep replacing a part that will fail or solve the problem
@@TestDontguess did you notice drop in fuel economy?
It cost more to do the lockout and hurt my top end power. I never monitored fuel economy but if I could go back I wouldn't do it.
@@mikepotter4141 Cost more to do the lockput than to do a set of ford phasers? What did you pay??
@@AlanDike lol
Hi, i'm from Venezuela and i have a question. I already removed the ratchet and the engine it's working well, but lately is getting started to generate a failure and it is that when i'm running at 60 or 70km it
When i'm running at 60 or 70km, the engine loses power for a while
Cant say I disagree with locking em but ive heard all the non-Ford phasers are the ones that dont last.
So non ford phasers were installed from the factory and that’s why they are all failing your saying 🤔🤔🤔
@@TestDontguess I think non ford phasers last even less time than ford phasers (mine sure didn't). That's why I had to find used ford phasers so the lock fits in the kit I just got from Western. Didn't have Dorman phasers either, went with Standard Manufacturing ones a couple years ago. Lesson learned. I'm looking forward to the same results as you. Thanks very much for the great video!
The gap between the phaser and the first bracket is key no other videos imagine this a let alone State the importance of it another thing that I haven't seen in any video remove the cam position sensor it's a flimsy piece of garbage that'll cost you $60 to replace if you touch it with the wrench
