You make great, detailed videos FordTech! I have similar but louder tapping noise that started with a notable event. My '05, 5.4 w/107,000 miles suddenly started skipping really badly (no tapping sound yet). There was an unbelievable amount of fuel odor and white smoke coming out exhaust and diagnostic code indicated rich right bank. While trying to start engine, and without any audible firing/combustion, starter slowed and then stopped turning engine as if engine was under load (good battery/starter). I'm confident engine hyrdro/vapor locked on fuel. I held accelerator WOT a few minutes and then started engine. From that moment, engine started making loud tapping noise on right side and is loudest at torque converter and right exhaust using stethoscope (hot or cold). I replaced o2 sensor on right bank and engine runs great now - no skip, no vibration ...just loud tapping noise. I feared bent rod/wrist pin but engine runs too smooth and it sounds more like lash adjuster. I now have valve covers & front cover off. I checked cam rollers and lash adjusters in place without cam lobes depressing them and see no issues (plan to disassemble for proper inspection). Phasers & crank gears are timed correctly, but the right chain tensioner suddenly collapses as I rotate engine by hand. The chain gets sloppy loose. As I continue to rotate engine, the tensioner plunger extends and chain gets good & tight. This loosening/tightening of chain repeats as I rotate engine. Could the chain tensioner be the source of loud tapping noise? Any thoughts why hydro/vapor locking could cause the tensioner to fail? I've seen your videos regarding faulty tensioner gaskets. If the tensioner gasket is the problem, how does tensioner plunger extend and tighten chain during rotation? You're right on - Makuloco!!
Nice video. Very informitive. I have been a Ford guy for 37 years. Thies have git to be the biggest POS engines ever made by Ford. My wife owns a 2 valve and it has been the biggest pain. My 3 push rod Fords has none of the problems that thies have. I surely dont want a 3 or 4 valve.
Don't forget to check the timing chain tensioners, the gaskets blow out between the tensioner and head causing low or no oil pressure in the top end. Always a good idea to pull a few camshaft caps to check for scoring. Just because the phaser is making noise does not mean it is the cause. Sscc
Thanks for your phaser explanation. Can you tell me, if I don't do anything about the noise, is that bad? In other words, it is noisy, and I can change them, but do I have to? Can I just live with the noise or will they progressively get worse and finally blow apart? Thanks.
+FordTechMakuloco Mine has gotten worse, ive noticed slow engagement of the VCT system in instances where id go from say 2k in overdrive to 4k during a kickdown (stomping the pedal) I feel the power come on with a lag, almost like an odd turbo lag. I was thinking maybe my issue was the tensioner seals resulting in low oil pressure but I dont really have any sort of startup rattle? Or atleast if I do its so faint I cant hear it, I have noticed when the engine is colder it responds tons better (typically below the 1st quarter mark on the temp gauge) At the same time I wonder if my truck is running leaner than normal due to a possible vaccum leak somewhere? I recently resealed around the air filter tray that had deteriorated causing a bad bog and drone noise around 1.2k rpm. This truck of mine is just full of fun surprises :/ when it does run right though (typically below that quarter mark on the temp gauge), it has plenty of power! But still sounds terrible. Tons of people think my truck has a diesel engine in it! Some swear it does!
What are your thoughts on the phaser lockout kits? I see folks say they are the best way to eliminate the phaser knocking, but it seems to me like you completely get rid of any kind of timing advance by doing this. Am I missing something?
My 05 triton has misfireing and trembling. I changed the sensors. It ran fine until it ran long enough for the computer to generate codes. Then it started shaking again. That wouldn't be the phaser, would it? To me, it seems more of a communication issue somewhere versus mechanical because it ran smooth for that brief window.
Interesting how it works, seems like it moves quite a bit so I assume that would translate into quite a few degrees timing ? That seems like a frequent and expensive repair.
2002 mazdas had the same designe on their mazda 6-s and. my cars still works, even though the last owner didnt take care of the car. Though mazdas design has extra thought but into it, so no raddle and smoother movement with steady pressure
I have an 08 Ford Expedition That has been making this noise ever since about 86,000 miles. I decided to just let it ride and see what happened. It’s been working fine for the most part with the exception of the noise. It’s now at 246,000 miles. The noise started getting worse and it’s performance I scan worse. I’ve been told it’s totally shot and I need a new engine. I put in 10/40 weight synthetic oil and used some Lucas oil conditioner and some engine restore. I also replaced the spark plugs and the ignition coils. It’s definitely running a lot better. I can certainly live with it like it is for a while. What I was wondering is I’ve been reading about these phaser lockout devices you can install to fix that problem. My mechanic has said that he thinks there’s probably enough other things that are worn out on the engine that it’s too far gone. I was wonder what your thoughts are on it.
question, my 2004 5.4 engine sounds like a diesel at idle but when I accelerate the noise goes away and runs fine. After watching the video what is causing the pin from engaging at idle and is there a way to fix the locking pin and spring instead of replacing the phasing gear?
hi there friend... I have a question... my truck is a Ford f150 5.4 3v When I accelerate my car at 1000 rpm sounds a lot but only if I keep the throttle in that revolution I hear the sound near the right cam phaser but I'm asking why just only in that rpm I have to change my cam phaser? I checked oil pump vct solenoid and filter all of that is checked...
This is the same noise alot of 5.0 Coyote owners are reporting. I thought this was fixed after 06 or 07 in the 5.4 Tritons. How could this possibly be effecting the newer Coyote engine??
So when I spin my engine over by wrench my driver side cam phaser moves with the camshaft but after spinning the engine over the timing peg moves separate from the phaser. Is it supposed to spring back like that or not?
You are an outstanding teacher and KNOW how to explain things VERY well - you are applauded! My 06 Mustang GT 4.6 has 108,000 and was run VERY low on oil for about a week or more (down over 4 quarts) . After a few months I changed the plugs and oil and now it is idling rough and while idling rough and unsteady it has a clanking sound reminiscent of a diesel engine. I am getting codes 345 - 349 - and 171. I changed both VCT solenoids and problem remains unchanged. As soon as you race it a bit it runs smooth and quiet. It is so rough on pickup it cannot be driven. Does this sound like cam phaser issues? Low oil pressure? I see some videos of changing the phasers without doing anything to hold the camshaft or removing any rockers - I don't know how this can be done. I really would appreciate any advice.
You can verify if the phasers are the issue by disconnecting the vct solenoids and driving it but the way it sounds is the oil pressure is too low for the vct system to work properly from the engine damage from running it low on oil. Do the codes pop up rather quickly after starting it.
The engine had all but blown up and I give up. You are completely correct it is shot. I am buying a new 2015 gt conv to replace it. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
O have a 2009 F150 with 4.6 v8 24 valve with 150,000 miles on it. Always gone to dealer for oil change and any issues. Been hearing this sound for a year now. Not too loud but can hear it. Should I try using Castrol 10w30 half synthetic to see if it quiets back down.
So, if the locking pin is making all of the noise and creating more potential issues, could you possibly fix it by replacing the plunger spring with a stronger, thicker spring? This would keep that locking pin under much more tension, but wouldn’t take much more oil pressure to adjust timing, right?
Appreciate the information in ur videos.. I have a 2008 F250 5.4L 3v I have replace vct phaser vct solenoid with timing chain guides and tensioner but I still have the same problem chain rattle/knock at hot idle and p0022 dtc do have any ideas? Also base oil pressure was at 15psi wich is min spec
This explains perfectly why bank 1 on my truck makes this knock at idle but at higher RPM's runs like it should. Is there a fix for this other than replacing the phaser?
Does the timing kit you linked above apply to the 4.6 as well? Not thinking of much difference, and ford part numbers for the most part match. Guides have different numbers, but may have an update. Just need honest feedback before I buy.
I have an 2006 F250 5.4 Triton with this problem. Is there an replacement engine that's comparable to the 5.4 Triton without cam phasers? I think mines has more problems then just the cam phasers and I'm considering just replacing the engine to avoid this problem...just not sure how to find a legit replacement engine...
I'm not sure my car had the phaser knock trouble. 94 Mark VIII I bought it with 100K miles always ran beautifully EVEN THOUGH starting procedure always included WHAT SOUNDED LIKE a flat lifter. The knock never lasted longer than 1.5 seconds then disappeared. I have been told that the sound might have been a cam chain tensioner part. But something broke making the car quickly overheat. Now IT REALLY BEHAVES exactly like you would expect from a motor that is a tooth off on the timing. Can you please point me in a direction??
My 2006 makes this noise really loud at around 1200 rpm at hot idle. I saw somewhere that Ford put out a TD saying that this is normal. If it's normal why would it start doing it at higher mileage? Is this an indication of low oil pressure or impending doom in the phaser or a failing VCT? I've seen lots of info about what's going on but no one seems to say what to do about, and it seems Ford would have us believe its ok for an engine to start making a horrendous rattle after 100k miles.. I'm sure they would prefer I just replace the truck lol
Phaser oscillation to an extent at that rpm is normal yes but the absolute first step is to replace the vct solenoids with new Ford units then check engine oil pressure at hot idle with normal vct operation.
What's the purpose of cam phaser lock out? Does it make it to where you don't have to deal with future issues of phaser knocking or since the phasers on my 06 Gt is phaser knocking, should I replace the phasers or a lockout kit? I don't really grasp the purpose of the lockout piece.
yes it was the two vct solenoids runs great now......man the repair shops reads the Eng lite code comes up no oil to cam shaft and want's to replace your engine ? and the proplem was just a $100 fix
Hello, I have a problem with a 2008 F150 5.4L 3V. First problem, when in cold and starting the motor sound a chain noise, the technician said that is a CHAIN TENSIONER on the passenger side. Second problem, it thrown a P0022 code (INT CAM POSITION TIMING OVER RET BAN 2), its misfiring the passenger side and the technician said maybe is a phaser... The truck was repaired of a time chain kit 2 months ago... those problems I have sounds awful and the motor starts to vibrate... I saw a lot of videos on youtube that adjudicates the problems to VCT Solenoids... and maybe could be those, but I´m not sure... What do you think? Could a Phaser Locks help to solve my problems??? For what are those PHASER LOCKS made for??? What are they improvement for the motor or what is the benefits? Hope you can help me with this!! Thank you!
What's your opinion on using cam phaser lockouts? Is there any pros/cons? It seems to me, if the phasers are that much of a problem, why not disable it? I only ask because I just bought an 06 f150 and had the motor blow 3 weeks later. I bought another one used with 104km on it, and I know ill need to do a complete timing job with new phasers and the oil pump you recommend.
Can a bad cam phaser keep the truck from starting? It all started with rough idling & a camshaft position sensor code, then white smoke from tailpipe, then one day it wouldnt start. I replaced the sensor, and it still doesn't start up. Thanks
Your sensor threw a code, there's probably something wrong. They don't put the sensors on there to fail, they're there to tell of a failure. Take the cam cover off and look at it. I think your problem lies elsewhere though. Maybe head gasket.
If the 3 roll pins come out of the reluctor can you put red loctite on them and press them back in or is the phaser garbage if the reluctor wheel comes off at any point?
Do you have a video that shows where to find and how to remove this component once the valve cover is off? Is it what the timing chain sits on? If so, does the chain require removal from the engine to remove the phaser?
Thanks so very much for your videos. Some of them have helped me fixing 5.4s. Pls what brand would you recommend I get timing chain kits for a F150 5.4 3V? I can see a lot of timing chain kits on Amazon or eBay, but don't seems to know which particular seller or chains you'd recommend for me to buy, without issues. There are a lot of fakes around.
Great videos! We currently have a 07 f-150 5.4 in the shop for some noise issues. The difference here is the engine is silent cold and when gets hot starts making a rattle/tapping noise off between 1000 and 1400 RPM. Base idle is relatively quiet (although there is still some light rattle noise). With the VCT solenoids disconnected, the off idle tapping goes away altogether. Our base oil pressure is 28 lbs hot idle. I am thinking this maybe a solenoid issue. What is your take??
So i have a question that will probably stump any Ford guy. I have a 98 Contour with a bad exhaust phaser sprocket, what can i do since NOT even one exists in the world? Since i am getting a check engine light and no one in the world has a replacement part, i am told that the only option that i have to is to junk a rust free good condition Contour . What do you suggest?
I am considering a F150..Do you have a suggestion on which engine seens to have the least amount of problems. not seen the base v6 in. most of your vidoes. thanks for posting all these very helpful videos.
kens97sto171 I would get the base 3.5L or the 5.0L hands down for the least problems. Now of course they have their power differences so that would depend on what you plan on using the truck for.
I've got a 97 F150 with the 4.6, and mine is making the same knocking sound coming from back near the torque converter like you showed in another video. The thing about mine is it only starts making the sound after the engine warms up and I drive the truck down the road, would the phaser be the cause?
Nice explanation. So with these phasers it either knocks or it doesn't? I assume since oil isn't reaching that pin due to the design of the phaser it will be about the tolerance when the phaser was manufactured? My real concern is how these phasers become damaged and if simply replacing them is a bandaid of sorts as the phaser will eventually start to breakdown again. I assume oil pressure plays its role in the phasers health. Are there other items such as oil pump or another component that should be replaced in conjunction with the phasers?
They can make a flutter or rattle noise if the oil pressure is low or erratic causing erratic vct operation or oscillation. I highly recommend an oil pump upgrade at the same time- amzn.to/2bGPyIU
+FordTechMakuloco Watched your video on the pump. I may do that on my own as I Ford will probably bend me over for that when I have them look at the cam phasers. My expy is still under a powertrain warranty.
Good Morning! So I was wondering on the is it possible for the front alignment with the L and the center spoke can be really off? I have one that is on the other side and almost lined up with the other spoke. I'm not sure how this happened. The timing still seems to be just fine though. How did the cam phaser fail like that?
My 04 F150 S-Crew with the 5.4 has 148k miles...It's quiet when i first start it but as soon as it warms up the ticking starts up, sounds like it's coming from the passenger side..No lights on the dash and doesn't seem to be running rough. Does this sound like the cam phaser is bad? Thanks
I just bought a 05xl and they old guy put 100000 miles on it while it was making this noise. I just ordered a new motor because my mechanic said it's 1/2 the cost to repair it. He's going to install the millings m360 oil pump though.
my 2006 f150 starts ticking shortly after start up. Not sure if it's the lash adjusters or cam phaser. I changed all plugs and cops 10,000 miles ago. truck pulled a misfire code @ # 4. changed cop and plug no change. changed out fuel injector and ran ok. Idle is now rough and low, but never dies. Now, when I hit the gas its falls on its face, stumbles and just won't accelerate at all. Again, no trouble codes. I bought the truck new and have changed the oil every 3,000 miles. It currently has 158,000 on it. Any suggestions on where to start or look? Thank you for the videos and your time! Nick
Old video but a good one. Im not much of a car guy(can replace regular wearable parts) and my truck got codes that indicate this thing isnt working right but i couldn't grasp how tf any of it worked to understand why its bad/dangerous.
Hey bro like ur vids hope u can help me on a 2007 ford 5.4 phasers are making the tick noise but what im more concern is the lack of power when i give it gas feels like plug cats but i did a pressure check and there good and runs perfect till i floor it it bogs and i can here missing in the cylinders i check my scanner and miss all cylinders and dont get no codes just random miss i checked fuel it stays on 39psi and when i floor it 27psi mass air flow sensor good.
Nice video thanks for sharing, I have a 2004 5.4 that runs great, once the oil heats up, it will sometimes at a stop light, start a horrible rough idle. then runs great once your back up to idle, it's also sometimes knock pretty good like it's a diesel truck yesterday the check Eng light came on with a P0012 code.
i run a 5.4 2004 as well and was wondering if you had any problems with a knock from 40-50 mph zone, my idle runs great and i’m sitting at 170k miles but that gap in between those is rough
Hey @FordTechMakuloco, i have a 2003 svt focus with a timing problem, just wondering if you know if that variable valve timing system works similar to this? Thank you
does this problem cause the car to shake and rattle? like the car is going to fall to peices? my car has this problem when the car is hot in temp after it runs for about 20-30mins then cruising say over 30mph and comming to a dead stop and bam the noise and shakes and the rpms dip to around .5k i give it gas to around 2k rpm and its fine again but from .5k rpm to around 2k rpm alot of hesitation and sever power loss any sugeestions and help would be greatly appreciated thanks
You have described the exact problem noise I'm having on my 05 5.4 L F-150 during cold start up. It does quiet down after the engine reaches proper operating temp but I still hear a little tapping if I'm idling close to a structure. I assume it may have been caused due to my previous lead footing it, but hey, when ya got a sweet sounding truck, ya wanna hear it even more! LOL What do you think a job like this would cost for repair at a shop rate of $110 per hour? Thanks again for the enlightenment, I thought it was just a valve adjustment! LOL
Hey @FordTechMakuloco - My '09 4.6L 3v will intermittently make the phaser knocking noise and will throw only one code (P0345). It's very inconsistent and will ALWAYS go away when I shut off the engine and immediately restart ... and sometimes when I shift to neutral from drive or reverse (whichever I'm in when it starts knocking). I can go a week and it won't throw the code and then it will happen three times in the next 24 hours, then not again for a few days. Very random. Thoughts?
I have a ford f150 2010 4.6. and same... noise problem.. runs pretty wood but when you go in traffic in low rpm.. start shaking.. you turn it off.. turn on again.. and nothing happen.. I need a good mechanic like you in san diego CA thankyou
Sounds like the coils need to be replaced, that shaking is a misfire. Those coils go about 75k miles and a very common problem. Do a full tune up (air filters, spark plugs and coils)and problem fixed
+FordTechMakuloco so is it true that increasing the weight of the oil from 5W-20 to 5W-30 can solve the issue? I always figured that by increasing the weight you would just be putting a bandaid or a bigger problem but if increasing the weight will solve it I can do that I'm due for an oil change anyway. Ive got a 2004 F150 5.4 Triton and ive been running 5W-20 synthetic. The ticking noise is definitely noticeable but not as defined as some that ive seen. Im debating replacing the VCT sensors as well.
2004 mazda 6 3.0 engine found on ford have code for both cam sensor checked with scope good signal all the way to computer also good ckp signal check chain timing marks all good checked ocv for mazda (vvt) open nd closes right so can u help me out with any maturation customer is really angry
do you recommend doing these in pairs? i usually have seen just one fail but seeing as you have the whole front cover off it might be a good idea to do the other because it is following. just wondering your thoughts. great videos.
Quick question: I am doing a cam install for my mustang gt and it requires the cam phaser limiter by comp cams. I need to remove the back plate of these newer phasers (EXACTLY the one you have shown in the video); However, the spring lock tool they provided will only work on the older phaser models (years 2005-2007) but will not work on the 2008-2010 or updated phasers like in this video. My question is how do you lock that spring in place without ruining the phaser? Also, did you put back together the phaser in this video or no?
Hey my son bought a 2006 Ford Expedition with 5.4 liter 3v and we replaced cam phasers and timing chains , guides and tensioners and I know for sure I timed it right , but now when you go to crank it it is like the timing is off it cranks over slow and when starts it runs good but has a crappy idle and no codes , when I pulled the bolts out both cams hardly any oil came out someone told me I should have blew air thru to make sure they weren't stopped up coming from camshaft is that true ? I rechecked timing marks are good but when cranking it is like when you have a distributor turned to far and it hard turning motor over , also it is popping thru intake , any help would be great , thanks
I have a 1998 Expedition with a 5.4 triton but I dont know if its a 2 valve or 3 valve . It has no VCT solenoids and it uses regular plugs so I assume its a 2 valve , but it sure seems to make this same " paint can ball rattle " especially in a drive thru or next to a wall .
I have a 2000 f-150 with 230,000 mi. It has a paint can rattle noise but its my catalytic converters. I don't think they had Variable Valve timing in 98
Good evening FORDTECHMAKULOCO. My pleasure to meet you! GOD BLESS YOU FOR ALL THE HELP THAT GIVES TO TRAVEZ OF YOUR CHANNEL !! I have a truck SUPER DUTY F-350, 6.2, 2011. That has a fault and was after having lowered a cylinder head. because he wore a valve spring. Now I keep failing and I think it's because the chain distribution is not well installed. I have my doubts about it! Please have any video or material that can illustrate with regard to the installation of the distribution chain and its components as well as the axis of cams and rocker arms? Many thanks in advance and a thousand BLESSINGS !! Almodio, Táchira-Venezuela.
Yes, there are programmers that lie to the pcm so that the light isn't on but I still think it's silly not to just do the job correctly and replace the phaser.
Anyones F150 sound like it has crappy flowmasters under heavier acceleration? Can't figure out what's causing that noise. Runs fine at startup, idle, and crusing, but sounds like crap when accelerating. throwing code PO345 and PO349. Sensors are new, thinking I have a short or grounded wire leading to the sensor. If the signal is fixed, should that fix any timing issues and make the noise go away?
Here is a very easy test. To check the operation of the VCT system, recommend unplugging the VCT solenoids with the engine off and the key out of the ignition. This will pin lock the phasers. After the VCT solenoids are unplugged clear the DTCs and start the engine. If the DTCs do not return there is a VCT phasers issue. If the DTC do return, recommend overlay the CMP circuits and retest.
They messed up designing something that mazda solved over 10 years ago!? That cam timing regulator is almost the same design! But it looks like it was designed from a darn reference picture.
Not sure, they also both have the L and no R on neither side. My chain guides and one tensioner was bad. my Phasers look good plus I installed limiter on them. just don't want to put everything back together if that one phaser not having a plunger inside will cause any issues
i have a 2005 5.4 3v i can drive it 5 miles it runs great, but at the end of a 5 mile trip, it will start rattling and cut off, let it sit, start back up, and runs fine!!! pending codes p0012 and 21 my God any help or suggestions? oh and it has new oil pump, pick up,both phasers, complete timing set, motorcraft oil and filter 5w20. good oil pressure
Hello, 07 f150 5.4L. I have a misfire code always triggering cyl #3 and rough idle and sound coming from phasers... is common that a phaser problem trigger this kind of codes and provoke rough idle? @FordTechMakuloko
Would bad cam phaser cause a no start i have a 5.4L crank but no start engine seams to have a skip while cranking like it does it have compression on some cylinder i would appreciate you're. Help thank
Great videos! I do have some questions though about the whole vct system. I have a 2010 f150 4.6l 3v. First off, at an idle, theres the typical clicking noise which after listening to it, it seems like my injectors. But upon a light tip-in excel, theres the horrible knock/tap that occurs between 800 and 1200rpms. This is a bad phaser right? Or maybe another defective vct part? Also, I see you recommended the Dorman phaser in the description, is this the best replacement option available? Or are there other manufactures that have better reviews? (I hear horror stories about replacement phasers going bad again) What are your thoughts on the livernois lockout kit? I just need some straight up advice before I go spending $$$. Also, I see that youre from Chicago, have you heard about any reputable shops in the west Michigan area? Im always a do-it-yourselfer but I currently don't have the time or a shop to do it in. Thanks for your time! And keep up the great videos!
03blasteryfs No ideas on the shops in your area, the Ford units are by far the best and most expensive. Although a failing phaser can cause the concern you describe we mostly see the vct solenoid cause this. As far as the lockout kit they are a great idea but expensive I think.
FordTechMakuloco alright thanks for the reply! Ive also researched some guys goin to a 10w-30 oil versus 5w-20. Is it true that thicker oil builds more pressure? when i start my truck cold theres absolutely no noise, but it starts when the engine reaches full operating tempertatue (maybe because the oil is hot and thin). Should there be any concern with me trying 10w30? thanks
The regen cycle can last awhile if driven in town, it is best to drive at highway speeds then it shouldn't take too long at all not sure on the exact times, should be like 15min or less on highway.
after changing the oil with a synthetic blend and replacing the solenoid's on both banks and started the vehicle, im still getting the rough idle after the vehicle warms up a bit....im so pissed right now..lol the codes I am getting are po0012 and po0022 and po345 plus o2 code because he remove the CATS. it runs great at idle when I first crank it up so it apparently in time. but if I step on the gas and let it fall back to idle the rough idle begins....I can turn the key off and then crank it up some times and it will run great again until I hit the gas again... what do I do? change the phasers? is there any thing else it could be? I have voltage to the secondi's.. please get me in the right direction with this...what else could it be.....low oil pressure? how low is too low? the vehicle is not making a lot of noise after operating temp has been reached... I wish I would have check out this video earlier... I could have check the alignment or the phaser.. looks like I have to tear it down again. if you have any ideas or comments I would appreciate it. thank you... this is my first po0012 ect.... and it figures it wouldn't go smoothly by just replacing the solenoid's.. lol
Could you get noise from those internal fins smacking the housing? I have noise at idle and on acceleration. but it will go silent after 2100ish RPMS. How do i know if I have the leaking chain tensioners that I have heard about?
How can I determine the where the noise is coming from? I have heard of the seal on the hydraulic tensioners going bad. or should I do chains, guides, tensioners, phasers and forget it.
I would do chains and guides if over 100k for sure and phasers/tensioners either way. The seals on the tensioners go bad all the time, you will know though on a cold start first thing in am.
FordTechMakuloco ok well i guess that's kind of good..any common issues on my 5.4 that would sound like a clacking phaser or knocking type sound? Thanks for the reply! It says 08/02 on the door tag f150 fx4 lariat..Also is the fx4 upgrade found in the vin?
+FordTechMakuloco Good afternoon, i have an 2005 mustang GT and I just replaced both my phasers and both VCT's, every worked well the first 50 miles but then I heard what sounded like phaser clicks but not as audible as my old phasers were... Got a check engine light last night and this morning it chatters again.... When I did the install of the new phasers, I did notice as I torqued the new driverside phaser, the tone wheel turned/rotated as I torqued the main bolt, does that mean the locking pin sheared?
Also, in regards to the tone wheel rotating while I torqued the phaser bolt down... It rotated about 30 degrees and when I stopped applying torque, the tone wheel returned to its normal position on its own.
Maybe somebody can answer this one... I have a 06 with the 5.4 and it looks like a ordinary cam sprocket to me. Do all these 5.4's from 06 supposed to have a cam phaser? I have a knocking noise I'm trying to pin down. Of course it's in a van, so I can't get the valve cover off without removing the motor mounts on passenger side,.. but I can lift up the valve cover enough to see it's just a sprocket with a bolt,. so I'm cornfused!
They can make a clatter noise at a little over 1k rpm due to a weak spring and of course the low end knock noise hot idle. When they totally fail there is a constant knock noise.
I have a 2006 5.4 3v with the driver side one making some noise but not the passenger one. can I drive on this for awhile or does it need to be done asap? I'm in college and money is tight
John Wyskochil well thats comforting, I plan on having to live with it till I finish college. Thank you for the info not many have given me any helpful info
Hey I just changed the tensioner and when I crank it sometime is puts tension then it knocks and the tension goes away and the chain becomes loose again.. what could the problem be?
Looks like they went back in time what a piece of junk. I don't know why they want to replace something that was working fine. Junk I'm glad this is here though I'll never buy one of these thanks for all the good info.
I recently bought a 2015 Explorer Limited with a 3.5L Ti-Vct V6 Engine. After driving the car for a bit and its warmed up there is a ticking noise coming from the passenger side of the hood. There is no ticking noise when I start the car, only after its been driven. I took it to a Ford dealer and they said the ticking was normal but it doesn't sound normal. Do you have any advise or suggestions on what it could be? Do these 2015 Explorer's have this Cam Phaser that you mention in the video? At this point i'd be wiling to pay to just get it fixed, that's how bad it sounds and it's very loud when going through drive thru or when I pull into my garage. I hate that noise.
Hello greetings from Ecuador, I replace the entire distribution kit A F150 2010 4.6 lts as it lost oil pressure and sounded like Diesel, change the chains templadores (the kit) oil pump and pump Of water, but when I turn on, it sounds very ugly like a Snoring or as if you lack oil, help me please I am for traveling And I want to buy the parts
Timing tensioner is fine. The tension tightens with oil pressure so when you spin the motor it tightens up.
Is the knock itself a problem or the symptom of a problem, and if it is a problem what will happen if it's not changed?
it’s a problem. it could wear out and bust your timing chain which could lead you to misfire. happened to me last weekend and i had to get towed
Sscc
Kwils69 Good points
Thanks for your phaser explanation. Can you tell me, if I don't do anything about the noise, is that bad? In other words, it is noisy, and I can change them, but do I have to? Can I just live with the noise or will they progressively get worse and finally blow apart?
Thanks.
Pete Pembroke The noise may get worse but generally if you don't fix it everything will be just fine.
I'm following... I have the questions
You know your stuff!! First time l saw this part so clearly explained, thanks for sharing
After watching the video what is causing the pin from engaging at idle and is there a
way to fix the locking pin and spring instead of replacing the phasing gear?
hi there friend... I have a question... my truck is a Ford f150 5.4 3v When I accelerate my car at 1000 rpm sounds a lot but only if I keep the throttle in that revolution I hear the sound near the right cam phaser but I'm asking why just only in that rpm I have to change my cam phaser? I checked oil pump vct solenoid and filter all of that is checked...
ok, please make a video on using phaser lockouts.are they ok or will they damage your engine.thank you.
This is the same noise alot of 5.0 Coyote owners are reporting. I thought this was fixed after 06 or 07 in the 5.4 Tritons. How could this possibly be effecting the newer Coyote engine??
97widerider damn that's crazy, I have a 4.6 & was thinking of getting a 5.0 later on in the future...might just change my mind.
I thought the 5.0 was the best engine ford ever made??
If there is rattling coming from the spring loaded plunger, could it be solved with a high volume oil pump like the 340hv?
This would keep that locking pin under much more tension, but wouldn’t take much more oil pressure to adjust timing, right?
welll,,, please we need some info about 6.2 motor f350 2011. basically timing chain
Just to be sure and confirm you take out the front three rocker roller arms? Or position them in the positions you described?
I think the 4.6 L 2valve motor is your best bet. Cam phasers are found on 4.6 3 valve motors as of 2008.
FordTech, is it at all possible for the phasers to go out of timing enough to cause a valve to hit a piston?
Working in a machine shop is there a reason i can't replace the little pin with a machined one?
Thank you!
Do you think cam phaser lockout bad thing.
Thanks
Only if they have self destructed inside.
Chris Withers Did you find out the problem? I think I have this issue.
FordTechMakuloco Thanks. will take your advice. leaning towards the v6. more room under hood and i dont need the extra towing power. thx again.
So I guess the big question is my cam phaser is making just a little bit of noise it would be best to just keep driving and wait until it gets worse?
Thanks
Having the same issue, phasers were bad.
Brian Patton Those have got to be your Phasers.
Wouldn't adding a higher pressure oil pump than stock actually mess with the timing advance? More pressure, more advance?
no
I just bought a 05xl and they old guy put 100000 miles on it while it was making this noise.
Nick
I GOT SAME PROBLEM, AND A TOP SPEED ARE 70 MPH, NO MORE...
anything we can use to quiet them down without replacing?
Old video but a good one. Im not much of a car guy(can replace regular wearable parts) and my truck got codes that indicate this thing isnt working right but i couldn't grasp how tf any of it worked to understand why its bad/dangerous.
Very clear and concise! Good job.
What's your opinion on the lockout kit?
I'm getting a slight noise from the phaser, the timing chain gets loose before the noise and tightens after the noise. Is my phaser bad ?
Hi! Thanks for a nice video. Do you have a review about cam phasers lock out?
Rob Olson did you figure out the problem? Might be vct solenoids?
i run a 5.4 2004 as well and was wondering if you had any problems with a knock from 40-50 mph zone, my idle runs great and i’m sitting at 170k miles but that gap in between those is rough
Thanks a bunch for the info! Keep up the great work on the videos!
Hey @FordTechMakuloco, i have a 2003 svt focus with a timing problem, just wondering if you know if that variable valve timing system works similar to this? Thank you
does this problem cause the car to shake and rattle? like the car is going to fall to peices? my car has this problem when the car is hot in temp after it runs for about 20-30mins then cruising say over 30mph and comming to a dead stop and bam the noise and shakes and the rpms dip to around .5k i give it gas to around 2k rpm and its fine again but from .5k rpm to around 2k rpm alot of hesitation and sever power loss any sugeestions and help would be greatly appreciated thanks
did you find the problem? It is happening to my vehicle as well...
bodyfittv any luck?
Could you do a video of all the variations of these from Ford (and others if you want) on the inside like that? I’ve only seen this type and dorman
LOL
Yours sounds like it needs timing chain tensioners the gasket on them blow out, these phaser make the noise hot not cold.
I need a good mechanic like you in san diego CA thankyou
mario aguilera A
Sounds like the coils need to be replaced, that shaking is a misfire.
If you're in there it's cheap insurance at that point. depending on the mileage, I'd probably put a new chain and tensioners in too.
It is not timed right. sorry
Where are u located. I have same issue with my truck csm phaser but dont trust anyone to work on it. .im in dallas area
I don't think they had Variable Valve timing in 98
2-valve, 3-valve was still a few years away then.
So if my cam phaser is stuck I'd get a check engine light?
The Variable Timing Nighmare.
Hi, One of my Cam Phasers did not have a Plunger on the spring. Why could that be???
+fresnoblue13 Was it a different brand? It may be a new design also. These phasers have been revised multiple times over the years.
Not sure, they also both have the L and no R on neither side. My chain guides and one tensioner was bad. my Phasers look good plus I installed limiter on them. just don't want to put everything back together if that one phaser not having a plunger inside will cause any issues
+FordTechMakuloco Hi, I checked them out yesterday and they are both Ford phasers.

i have a 2005 5.4 3v i can drive it 5 miles it runs great, but at the end of a 5 mile trip, it will start rattling and cut off, let it sit, start back up, and runs fine!!! pending codes p0012 and 21 my God any help or suggestions? oh and it has new oil pump, pick up,both phasers, complete timing set, motorcraft oil and filter 5w20. good oil pressure
c a did you figure it out? Might be vct solenoids?
Hello, 07 f150 5.4L. I have a misfire code always triggering cyl #3 and rough idle and sound coming from phasers... is common that a phaser problem trigger this kind of codes and provoke rough idle? @FordTechMakuloko
Would bad cam phaser cause a no start i have a 5.4L crank but no start engine seams to have a skip while cranking like it does it have compression on some cylinder i would appreciate you're. Help thank
It would have to be stuck in the wrong position and be way off for a no start. Very unlikely.
Should there be any concern with me trying 10w30? thanks
@@03blasteryfs same happening here... How did you fix it?
On the 6.7 Is there a way to check the regeneration cycle of the dpf after the display comes up if not how long does it usually last?
Only on the scan tool
The regen cycle can last awhile if driven in town, it is best to drive at highway speeds then it shouldn't take too long at all not sure on the exact times, should be like 15min or less on highway.
do u recommend the lock outs for the phasers?
Be nice if he would answer this he has never answered it in a comit
after changing the oil with a synthetic blend and replacing the solenoid's on both banks and started the vehicle, im still getting the rough idle after the vehicle warms up a bit....im so pissed right now..lol the codes I am getting are po0012 and po0022 and po345 plus o2 code because he remove the CATS. it runs great at idle when I first crank it up so it apparently in time. but if I step on the gas and let it fall back to idle the rough idle begins....I can turn the key off and then crank it up some times and it will run great again until I hit the gas again... what do I do? change the phasers? is there any thing else it could be? I have voltage to the secondi's.. please get me in the right direction with this...what else could it be.....low oil pressure? how low is too low? the vehicle is not making a lot of noise after operating temp has been reached... I wish I would have check out this video earlier... I could have check the alignment or the phaser.. looks like I have to tear it down again. if you have any ideas or comments I would appreciate it. thank you... this is my first po0012 ect.... and it figures it wouldn't go smoothly by just replacing the solenoid's.. lol
did you figure out the problem? I know the po345 is for the camshaft position sensor replacement which is around $15-25 online or auto parts store
yes, bad phasers.. thank you.
Could you get noise from those internal fins smacking the housing? I have noise at idle and on acceleration. but it will go silent after 2100ish RPMS. How do i know if I have the leaking chain tensioners that I have heard about?
The fins are in there very tight so I doubt it. If the chain tensioners are leaking you will have noise upon a cold start rattle noise.
FordTechMakuloco Cool thanks! I am at 126K I will do that then!
I'm finding timing parts for 02-10 and 04-10. Is there a difference? Most phases I'm finding say 04-10...mines 03. Thanks
2003 models don’t have phasers
It rotated about 30 degrees and when I stopped applying torque, the tone wheel returned to its normal position on its own.
hello, did you figure out the problem? I have an 05 Gt as well & I am barely going to replace both phasers & VCT's
Take a Bath Productions the phaser is only on the 5.4 and 4.6 with 3 valves
and lab scope both cam and crank sensors and look good and cam selonids work when i apply ground
Brain, what is the symptoms of bad phasers? other than codes
They can make a clatter noise at a little over 1k rpm due to a weak spring and of course the low end knock noise hot idle. When they totally fail there is a constant knock noise.
FordTechMakuloco why don’t they make these so this doesn’t happen? Just rediculous engineering.
I have a 2006 5.4 3v with the driver side one making some noise but not the passenger one. can I drive on this for awhile or does it need to be done asap? I'm in college and money is tight
bro my 05 has made that noise for over a year, no problems just the noise..
John Wyskochil well thats comforting, I plan on having to live with it till I finish college. Thank you for the info not many have given me any helpful info
acedriver1997 I try not to abuse her too much but yeah I hear alot of these types of fords with different ticks and taps. still a damn good truck.
What happens if you don't fix the problem?
Hey I just changed the tensioner and when I crank it sometime is puts tension then it knocks and the tension goes away and the chain becomes loose again.. what could the problem be?
ibyisabeast You are turning the crank by hand and watching this?
FordTechMakuloco
No this only applies to the 4.6L V8 and 5.4L V8, neither of which are in production for the explorer. You are good my friend
Rob G.
The water pump is driven by the timing chain and I would never buy one in the first place.
Hello greetings from Ecuador, I replace the entire distribution kit
A F150 2010 4.6 lts as it lost oil pressure and sounded like
Diesel, change the chains templadores (the kit) oil pump and pump
Of water, but when I turn on, it sounds very ugly like a
Snoring or as if you lack oil, help me please I am for traveling
And I want to buy the parts
People have told me that it could be hydraulic oil elevators or lifter, but in its video I have the doubt that it is the gear of the crankshaft
Paul Roca remueve la bandeja del aceite y revisa el sedaso te aseguro que va a estar bloqueado
is there any way to learn tire pressures on a ford's TPM systems? had the fun tonight with a fiesta...
As long as all the sensors are working and tire pressures are correct per door label, just take it for a test drive and the light will auto clear.
ye thats basicly what happened.
now if you replace a sensor whats up?
You must use an electronic activator tool we have from OTC.
bastords!~
would a vct/phaser problem cause my car to go on limp mode?
Sounds like a blood flow problem
Is it dangerous to run on this phaser knock?
In most cases no.
nissan vq37vhr engine have this cam sproket noise and make huge knock sensor signal. and retried ignition.
so i guess this is a smog thing or a fuel saving thing ??? i do not know... what you think ???
fuel economy, power, performance and it also replaces EGR hardware.
