2005 mustang gt, was having every issue possible. P0012 and P0011 codes, replaced the vct solenoids, not much better, still codes. So I watched a lot of you videos on all of these problems, replace the timing chains and found a chain tensioner on the pass side that was blown out, thought replacing it would maybe help the issue but still, nothing. After lots of time and money and frustration, I ordered two phasers and the high flow oil pump he recommends and the car runs better than it ever has. At 104k miles I was having this issue but the motor looked very clean, goes to show the reliablity of the original ford parts, replace with the revised stuff not aftermarket!!! Thank you for all the quality information you post

Oh my goodness! You saved me so much grief and money. I lost timing on my 05 f150 while removing the right head with broken exhaust studs. I set up timing like i was suppose to in your other videos. Right cam phaser also had an L mark? I set timing to that. Truck was way off. Now i see to use the other mark for the right side! I was 180 deg off. Was at my end. Had scheduled to take it to the dealership. Now i can fix my problem. Thanks!

Awesome video Brian, Thank you. I have followed your videos in the past wile doing the cam phaser/timing R&R and also spark plug R&R. All took some time but went very well with the help of your instructions. Very much appreciated! I wonder if you could tell me if you see phaser failure happen often with lack of oil pressure. My 05 F150 has recently died wile in motion and wile it will start (occasionally) it runs very rough for seconds then dies. After further inspection it seems I may have had an oil leak at the front cover where meets the oil pan. Is it possible that lack of oil caused the phaser to fail, throw off timing and causing the truck to, now, not start/run? or should I be considering other avenues? Thanks in advance!

Awesome video. I have learn so much with you that I really, really thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know it has been 7 years ago when you posted this video so I dont have high hopes of getting and answer but maybe I will be lucky. My 2004 Ford 150 has started developed a sound like a little piece of metal being tossed around at the passenger valve cover, right where the phaser is or the upper part of the timing chain cover. It is not a regular noise but an erratic one exactly as I said, like a piece of metal being tossed around at random. It started after I left my truck parked in my driveway for 4 days. It was a cold day in NY when I started the engine and I felt a weird noise. After that, this noise appeared. It will be present with the engine cold or hot. When I saw this video I though that maybe one of those roll pins came out and is being tossed around. Could this be the cause of the noise in my truck? By the way, much before that I plugged a scanner and I saw the passenger bank was retarded 20 degrees at iddle while the other was at zero. I have a pending code P0010.

I wish someone had told me to check the oil before diagnosing cam phaser problems. Once The crank case was full of good motor oil, the cam phasers started working perfectly. I didnt realize that the engine was low on oil and needed to be changed also. This caused the cam phasers to knock and rattle and I was about to spend $900 and my next couple weekends to change the timing set.

Thanks Brian ... Awesome series of videos. I need HELP with 2005 F150 5.5L 3V Phasor. Watched all your videos and am changing all of the timing components. I ordered two genuine Ford timing parts and phasers. One arrived OK and the second arrived in three pieces!!! Reluctor, spring and sprocket assembly. Snow is on its way and I am screwed unless I can put this second phaser back together ASAP. I have positioned the spring correctly but am not sure where to position the reluctor base into the square spring end and how many turns to rotate it so the reluctor ends up in the correct position. Cant afford to get this wrong and put the engine back together.

Your videos are great and you have so much knowledge with the timing system on this engine. I pulled up to a stop one day and the engine was shaking erratically and caused the cabin to shake as well. Have you ever seen a case where the phasers would be at fault for this symptom? This only occurs when the oil starts to get hot when you drive it for a while. It’s is also gaveling symptoms of roughy idle and you can smell the fuel being burned which I’m assuming is poor fuel economy. Please help I’ve looked all over and I’m just not sure about this one. Replaced the plugs and vct solenoids. Also there is a code coming up for a rich bank 1 would a phaser be to blame for that as well?

Fordtech, i have watched most of your cam phaser vids. Thanks. I had my engine rebuilt at 145k. After market parts but melling pump. Ran poor when i got it back, replaced vct solenoids w oem ford and it has run well for about 20k miles. I am at 195k now, i put new oem chain guides and tensioners...still stalls at lights. What are your thoughts on phaser lock out? I am not convinced ford phasers will solve this now terribly discouraging motor issue.

5 years later, I'm back here ma man. I still have the same 2008 GT. Tried to go out to McDonald's yesterday morning and the engine cold started just fine, then random started running super rough as I was exited my drive way and engaging my clutch at low rpm. My engine has 210k miles and I have retimed it twice, replacing chains, sprockets, phasers, vct solenoids, but I have never replaced all lash adjusters or followers (only a couple that have failed followers here and there) so I wonder if thats it. Timing chains and guides look fine from looking down from the top of the engine (valve covers removed). I hope I didn't spin a bearing or have a follower bend a valve or something crazy. Or maybe my car just had an electrical issue and went into limp mode. Not sure but I'm still doing some diagnostic tests. I'm about to use the follower tool to pull out all 24 followers and inspect them. I'll also check the lash adjusters. If its bottom end stuff, I might have to take it to a mechanic

Thank you so much for the informative video, I have 2012 ford expedition 5.4L, mileage is 200KM.
It has the P0024 code with "check engine on" for over 2 years now, I have changed the The Oil Control Valve (OCV) to the bank 2, but it did not fix the P0024 code. do you think using the "Cam Phaser Lockout" can fix the problem.
note1: there is no knocking noise sound, the sound of the engine is good.
note 2: mileage per hour is always around 12mpg.
note 3: I am using 5W30 full synthetic engine oil.
    Thank you.

Really Awesome Video. couple questions - If someone did take all the screws off the reluctor ring, (1) is it hard to reset the phaser spring back in the housing? (2) Is there a special procedure to align the marks? lastly, if we look at the tone ring and gear sprocket locations - (3) how much off is allowed to "perfectly" aligning up the gear tooth to tone ring tab? Is there allowance at all when matching up the center of the gear tooth to center of the tone ring tab? The reason I ask that and I know that is a used phaser but when I look at the tab on the tone ring in the video, it didn't seem to align exactly with the center of the gear to the center of the tone rings tab.

Hey man, your videos are the best. I'll be in Chicago for work next spring. Wish I could take my truck out there from Denver. My question for you is and i may post this on multiple videos to hopefully hear back. Although i know your super busy and despite your best intentions you can't get back to everyone. Anyway my question is, i put 12v to both my VCT solenoids. When I put 12v to the drivers side the engine runs smoother although not perfect. Still doesn't sound right. When i put 12v to the passenger side VCT solenoid the engine runs worse and almost dies out. Can you tell which phaser has failed based on that diagnosis? To back up, my engine recently started running terrible on my way down from the mountains. Code said cam position sensors. Which obviously wasn't the problem. I changed them anyway and of course my engine still tumbles and misfires and nearly dies no matter what rpm i am at. Thanks for all the great videos and help. I love your channel the 5.4 engine and my Ford's. Thanks

I'm in the process of doing the phasers now and I have the old one from the driver side in front of me. The center tab that aligns with the L is slightly right of the L. The left edge of the tab is perfectly aligned with the L. My question Is, is that correct? Because the new ones are the same way. Just wondering if that's right or if the center tone ring should be directly centered to the tooth. Just dont want to put in defective parts. Any insight from anyone that knows would be helpful. Btw the old one I took out was either an original or one of the older parts. No R on it! But I have an 04 with 200 on it! so it could have been done once before. I haven't torn my engine apart yet, but I have replaced both camshaft sensors. It runs GREAT for about half an hour then it starts idling rough again. Sensor one ,(left one) had oill on it, sensor 2 (right one) was clean. Blown Gasket? It was burning rubber when I first replaced the sensors. Now its losing power. I also have a Performance chip installed in it, I just installed it to see if it would help with the power output. Any suggestions? I really don't want to tear part my engine because I need my truck for work, I am a contractor, I'd put it in the shop but I'm afraid it'l going to cost me an arm and a leg and I'd possibly have to loan my wife out for a few hours, but that alone should allow me to keep my arm and leg, considering she's a 9.8/10.

    • @SangheiliSpecOp
      @SangheiliSpecOp 8 лет назад

That is probably the timing chain and their guides and tensioners if you hear a rattle for 3 seconds or less. They quiet down when the oil starts flowing. My Mustang does it with no problems. Eventually you may need to replace the timing chain guide and tensioners, Ford made them out of plastic for my Mustang for some reason. They will get worn out faster if you run your car low on oil for a long while.

When cranked over manually the chain will tighten then loosen. Cam phasers look ok from a visual standpoint. Has anyone ever run into this? Hello, I have a problem with a 2008 F150 5.4L 3V. First problem, when in cold and starting the motor sound a chain noise, the technician said that is a CHAIN TENSIONER on the passenger side. Second problem, it thrown a P0022 code (INT CAM POSITION TIMING OVER RET BAN 2), its misfiring the passenger side and the technician said maybe is a phaser... The truck was repaired of a time chain kit 2 months ago... those problems I have sounds awful and the motor starts to vibrate... I saw a lot of videos on youtube that adjudicates the problems to VCT Solenoids... and maybe could be those, but I´m not sure... What do you think? Could those Phaser Locks help to solve my problems??? For what are those made for??? What are they improvement for the motor or what is the benefits? Hope you can help me with this!! Thank you!

Is it possible to just swap the phasers for a pair of solid cam gears?

Do you happen to have specs on type of steel used and dimensions of the fins? It wouldn't be hard at all to make new fins if that is the primary internal failure point. Unless, they take out the groove they ride in. Then, it might not be a viable option.

I have a 2003 5.4 and to my understanding that's a 2v motor. But it has the symptoms of a failing cam phaser. Starts that tapping or ticking noise once the engine is hot, doesn't make a sound when it's cold. Any ideas??

2008 F150, 5.4 4x4. When downshifting from overdrive going up a grade, I get what seems like a backfire out of the exhaust. I'm stumped, unless some of the anti-seize got into the electrodes of the sparkplugs when I changed them. it seems like a secondary ignition problem, but I thought I'd ask. could a failing phaser exhibit similar symptoms?

I replaced the timing chains, phasers, guides and crank gear on a 2007 ford expedition. The job was quite simple thanks to your video. after installation was complete the truck cranks up fine idles fine and drives with no issues however it runs for about 30 min then starts running rough and dies. it will not crank up after that. it turns over and acts like it is out of time. i can let it sit for a couple of hours and then it will crank up and run fine again. the is no check engine light or codes. I have changed the cam position senors out, this has me and my mechanic stump. just wondering if anyone has had this issue.

Hey Brian, I am rebuilding my entire timing setup (with the help of your videos, YOU ARE **THE** MAN), however, I am also installing phaser lockouts with a custom tune. Should I replace my VCT solenoids even though the lockouts will theoretically render them useless? Or should I replace them since I'll be in there?

I believe one or both sticks occasionally. It will chug, sputter, and it sounds exactly like the truck you demonstrated in your "sticking VCT" video. I also have chain noise on startup, so it's getting the whole nine yards, Melling 10340 pump included. I really can't thank you enough for all your help, I feel like we all owe you more than a few beers!

I've changed both phasers, both chains, both tensioners, oil pump and both VCT solenoids on my 06 f150 5.4. My truck will start and run fine but as soon as I accelerate, my truck will die at idle. Any idea what's causing this?

so i just bought a set of camshaft phasers i talked to a mechanic and he stated that there was a new style of phasers with a new design that make them not be able to be noisy. like the oem ones that end up clicking any insight on or what they did to fix them.

1st off great job on your videos FordTechMakuloco this as well as your other videos are great and helpful videos. If you have a engine that has been poorly taken care of and has timing failure from crap oil this video will sure help.. A good long term solution is stop using crap oil. There are lots of these trucks with a half a million miles and more on them that have never been apart but each one of them use good oil. Then there are folks who insist on running Poison oil and put chains and tensioners and phasers in them every 60k to 80k. almost every oil you see on Tv will give you timing problems with these engines and they cost more than good oil lol they get you lured in with there tv commercials. I can only think of 3 brands of oils you see on Tv that are mid range oils and don't make buildups in your engine and Poison is not one of them how ever it keeps folks buying parts every 60k lol.pretty much if you have a timing problem under 500k your running crap oil that spends its $ on advertising not oil quality now think of what that oil is doing to the rest of the engine your fuel economy the list goes on. And they bend these folks over with a smile every oil change some every 3k miles so bad that these folks tell there friends how great the product is and even sport stickers in there windows. And Ford sits back and laughs thinking great keep running that oil we will sell you parts for life. Ford built the consumer a engine that will last a million plus miles untouched and the consumer blotched it up by running junk oil in it it even makes me laugh you can google Million Mile Gasoline Engine Teardown yet not many folks do.
