      Hi, I have an unrelated question, I changed the timing set on a 5.4 2v. I'm pretty sure I put the plastic rail tensioners on wrong side (left on right and right on left). Should I take it apart again to correct it or do you think it will be fine. In only a few miles is running fine so far.

      Curious at this point how much all of that costs? Between the engine, shipping, new parts.... does it make sense? Or should I say dollars and cents? By the time these trucks need this much work, generally unless they were really well kept as far as body and interior, they are worth less than the parts for this build. Am I wrong? I'm currently considering doing cam phasers, timing set, and oil pump on a nearly cherry 05 expedition, but they routinely sell for $4500-5500, so if I had to do an engine I would being buying the value of the vehicle in parts essentially. I'm a bit conflicted especially once you add in all the labor.

      Applies almost 100% of the time. Unless you own something like a bus, then the drivers side lug threads are reverse, but anyway.

    The engine drop was classic and the look on his face said it all. We all have been there and done that just part of the learning curve. Nobody got hurt no damage happen so all is good just a little jumpy now.

    My son and I were able to swap out the 5.4 in our 2004 F150 in a couple of weeks following the videos. No issues and the truck started and ran perfectly first try. No codes. No noises. Just a smooth running truck. Thank you for the care and time you put into your videos. They are a tremendous resource!

    I bought the same exact motor and used these videos as reference on questions I had which has been amazing and helped me out quite a bit! I would like to add on the oil priming process I went through about 10 sessions of cranking and never got oil pressure. I called the warranty department for the engine and they were very helpful and told me to try a few things. First thing was take the oil filter off and crank it then. If that didn't work get a jack, jack up the back end of the truck as high as I can safely do it and try it again with the oil filter off, it didn't work with just the oil filter off so I jacked up the back end and initially it didn't work but after a few more pumps on the jack got it a little bit higher I finally got oil to come out of the oil filter housing. I then put the oil filter back on and immediately got oil pressure on the next cranking session.

      I seem to be having issues with the metal shim hitting my torque converter studs and making it so the engine won’t turn over when the trans is bolted in. Any tips?

    I just swapped out my old motor for a reman from powertrainproducts. These videos were awesome. Huge thank you! Also as mentioned elsewhere in the comments, I also couldn't get oil pressure initially, so finally removed the oil filter and jacked up the back of the truck. Once oil started spilling out, I put the filter back on and bam, had oil pressure on the next cranking session. Truck is running great!

      How much did the engine run you and do you know what kind of internal parts they use? I got a 08 with 275,000 that I'm gonna have to replace the engine or get a new truck not too far down the road.

    Outstanding two-part video. Thank you for all the detail. I followed the two videos minute by minute on an 07 FX2 and the truck is running great. One fun thing if you’re going minute by minute- put a pan under the lower radiator hose before you disconnect it from the oil filter adapter. I dumped a ton of fluid in my garage then pressed play and sure enough the next step was to put a bucket in place, had forgotten seeing that advice when I watched the whole video earlier.
    Way to stay calm and cool with your son!

    Poor Alex, it scared the shit out of me when I was watching it. We all make simple mistakes but it's good to see he kept going and didn't let it bother him. Hell sometimes I have a hard time remembering left and right when I'm focused on not breaking something lol.

    Nice job. I've done it both ways, and removing the cab on those trucks to put an engine in is my favorite. Plus, the look on the customer's face when he sees his frame on the ground an body in the air is priceless.

    Many years ago, when I did the trans on my 93 F150, I used a couple pieces of all thread through the dowel pin holes. As I tightened the nuts, it pulled the trans forward in near perfect alignment. It worked like a charm.

    Man totally rebuilt an engine for a friend of mine who had another guy that tore down the entire engine and left it in pieces and never finished it.

    I admire your patience and the fact that you didn't edit your son learning through his mistake. It was a great learning experience for him without being yelled at. I know I would be yelling at mine. Love learning form you on the 5.4L 3V. Thanks for the educatation on the Cam Follower removal. I am living and repairing throug a P0017:00 Camshafat Position Correlation - Bank#1 Sensor B. The Error correlation for the two sides was -3.25 to the drivers and -20 to the passengers. I watched your video on the data stream. Everything is coming along really good just time consuming. Well thanks for always being great. I will continue to watch. Rob NYC

    Great tips Brian. You may remember about one year ago I did exactly that to my 04, I had emailed you regarding questions about my build. Your knowledge on these trucks is greatly appreciated. While the engine was out i did trans rebuild and u-joint replacement as well. Since then I raised the front end 2 inch to level the truck, replaced the struts and springs (O'reillys cheapies, don't recommend), rebuild front suspension all Moog parts, clean up entire frame, two coats rust encapsulate (I used chassis saver, I'm from the "D" road salt sucks) and satin black top coat. 20,000 miles still going strong.     In the 80's we would do this job 2 or 3 times a year with our buddies. Someone was always needing an engine. 24 hours and 48 beers later we'd have another used engine installed. Never ever did anyone get a brand new one.

      I think the problem lies with this particular engine. I’m looking at a rebuilt engine, as mine has 215k on it and has had timing problems twice. First was at 193k and I had to use a non-Ford kit. Which brings me to 215k and something jumped time. Rather than buying a new truck, I’ll spend $3,500 and hopefully be in good shape for at least 100,000 more miles.

    UPDATE: Heads up!! to anyone doing this a few years down the line. Powertrain products no longer ships the rebuilt engines with the 3 stud bolts at the top of the timing chain cover (where the radio interferance capacitors and AC comp muffler go) make sure you buy new ones or take yours off the old engine!

    In all seriousness. Its good you didn’t cut it out. It a full tutorial of how things could go bad. Not all perfect like some other channel that edit all the mistakes out. I really enjoy your videos. Make one for cylinder heads update to the new spark plug when overhauling an engine👍

    I rebuilt my first engine when I was 17. I had a SCJ Torino and my brother in law was a mechanic with that kind of patience too! At the end I was putting in the distributor and somehow a socket fell down in the motor. I almost cried! I sat there for 2 hours with a magnet fishing, asking my brother in law if he thought it would move if we left it in. He kept telling me we just need to lift it back up, take off the pan and get it out. (that was faster than the time I played with the magnet) He let me make the decision and I'm glad I followed his advice. No leaks and after priming, the beast fired up the first try. I wish I had that car now! and a 69 fast back 69 Barracuda. He was more of a brother to me than my own.

    Brian, thankyou for this video, ESPECIALLY the torque settings and special tools you used.
    I'm familiar with the 2005 IMRC circuit. Seeing that one on the back of the engine brought back memories of the two problems I had with a vehicle. That vehicle had the engine replaced. Later on I found out why. A stuck open intake valve in the Number 7 (3rd one in passenger side) which allowed combustion flame and gases into the intake, melting the IMRC flapper valve and no movement from the system. New intake fixed that. Something happened to the small wires to the IMRC harness before I got it, so I rewired from the connector to a known good part of the harness. All together, checked the system operation with the IDS, all good. The road test was WOW! Very good power and put a smile on my face! Thanks again Brian!

    Now that I have my screen wiped off after I spit Coke all over it when that engine dropped. I'm not surprised so much from the engine drop as much as I am at how quickly your son put the brakes on. Gravity is not always our friend.

      I did this sitting in an unfamiliar crane, lowering a generator into a Letourneau(google it)at a sawmill. The generator weighs 6 tons, and the two mechanics were very good at keeping out of harms way for just this reason. There were many guys there missing fingers! I would say we were all lucky that day, but if you aren't in the way, everyone goes home uninjured!

      It's why I don't like cherry pickers, overhead hoist is the only sure way to do this. I've done the cherry picker method and this is why I don't use it anymore.

    Thank you for these videos. I recently bought a cheap 2006 f-150 with a blown 5.4 3v and finished the swap today. I referred to your videos many many times on disassembly and reassembly. It has been 20 years since my last engine swap and I have done many in the past but a 5.4 3V is a bad choice to start back into it lol. This truck is just for myself so I am picking away at it. I expect with the used engine, price of the truck and all the parts for safety and refurbish to be around $3500 CAD

    Hey Brian, just swapped out my first motor and it went perfect-ish, aside from a few rookie mistakes. I torqued the intake to 18 ft/lbs instead of in/lbs on first sequence. And ofcourse i broke 3 off in the head. Thank you for your great videos! My 05 lives on!

      I have seen profession technicians accidentally drop too fast and the engine bangs down hard. Like Brian said, not much could get hurt that couldn't be fixed. It happens sometimes.

    These videos were great. My son's 2004 F150 2wd with the 5.4 Triton ate an intake valve. I watched these two videos several times and was able to swap in a rebuilt engine. I delivered the truck to him yesterday and it is running Great!!! Thanks for the help.

      The new ones must be alright,he wouldn't use them if he thought they were junk,if you've been following this guy for a while you'd trust his judgement ,he knows these Tritons like the back of his hand.If he says they are good enough,trust me they are good enough.

    Awesome video. I learned a lot. I like to take the front wheels off and lower the truck down until the front rotors are few inches off the ground. Lowers the working height. Makes working so much easier. Lay the front wheels down in the front of the bumper for a step stool. Also take that hood latch off..that thing digs into your gut.

    I use those old plastic housing gas filters (paper media) for the rear-axle vent tube. I've almost dropped an engine like that before. Broke out in a cold sweat. They need to improve those release valves on the cherry pickers! Great to see some father/son interaction. You're son is lucky; his teacher is one of the best.

    Kudos for not editing out the boom drop. A very common and dangerous mistake for novices. It's good that they see it but so glad you didn't get hurt. I'll bet your son doesn't do that again.

    Wow. Dropping these high tech engines. So much to look out for damaging delicate parts. My experiences helping with engine swaps, (long ago, in simpler times) so much easier. Only thing we did different was using wood and cardboard in the engine bay to shoehorn it into the final drop location and then remove the wood (like pieces of wall paneling) and/or cardboard. This would make any mishaps, as we saw here, from causing too much grief. Loved the details and tips. Excellent video and audio production values we've come to love from your workshop to our homes

    Thank you for making all these 3valve videos. I’ve used your timing set replacement video many times now for deleting the phasers and replacing the rest on multiple trucks. I am using this one now and you just make my work so easy. Watch a minute or two, do what you show, watch some more, repeat. Next thing you know you’re done.

    I just wanted to say these videos on motor removal and installation are very good I’m a guy who knows very little about working on cars but my 4.6 blew a head gasket in 05 f150 and I came across your videos and I will say with the help of these videos so far I have the motor ready to pull I just have to cut the manifold anyways I just wanted to say out of all of the videos I have found yours by far was the best it was step by step showing what to do video well done thank you

    At least he caught it, closed the valve. My pops would have freaked. I drilled a hole in the jack handles, use a bolt inserted, to control preasure... Similar to a basin wrench. Great job explaining, showing slow positioning, rather then brute force!

    Best thing this video did: convinced me to hire this out. My 2009 Ford 3-valve is the reason I drive a 2014 Chevy. Any plumber can explain galvanic response and how you use insulators to prevent it. Ford just mates ferrous with alloy directly and hopes the ground straps are enough. Incredible.

    Can't thank you enough, BEST video series master mechanic I've ever seen on You Tube. I've been twisting wrenches 50 years now, but you are so so detailed, calm, accurate, and real, with no silliness, your videos are so professional, and I am a professional also, so I really admire your demeanor, including how well you handled your son, just amazing!
    You have been my go to for Ford's about a year now. I hate Ford's but you make it easy and I feel guilty making money off your training. 😎😁
    Because of you, I ended up buying an 2008 F150 FX4 too! Purrs right now, but I know what's coming haha... I have swapped out and done other phaser jobs before, but you've given expert advise even on component part selection, ie, Helping pump, Ford vs Dorman XD phaser, etc.
    Love your technic, please please keep it up. I am semi retired now at 63, newer built home shop with 4 post hoist, I still do customers and a bit of hot rodding, but for some difficult jobs like the 5.4, I'd be hard pressed without you bro!!!!
