I know you mentioned you weren't sure people would be interested in this, but I for one REALLY appreciate you putting this together. I've always wanted a good beginner's explanation of a full 350 teardown. You've done vids like this before, but I always want to learn more.
I love watching you do engines you make me laugh I'm 85 and did motors and tranny's I had a stop for 22 years of rebuilding motors tranny's and carbs did for stock cards Derek keep doing what you do I'm one of you top watchers love we hen you bring your kids and Jessica helping😊
Yes, budget build. Maybe more than one. The basics are the same but every flavor (Bow Tie, Blue Oval, Pentastar) has its own unique characteristics. Could be a great reference for a lot of guys' projects.
As a Mechanic, I can tell You now that You are very good at rebuilding Engines. I have rebuilt Engines for most of My career and can say that not one piece of Your advice is wrong. You even reminded Me of a couple of things I forgot to mention in My last rebuild. I would recommend You for anyone & Thank You for posting such a good video. No kidding, was that timing chain shot! I have had worse though & also with the lifters & cam.
@@ViceGripGarage Definitely more of these videos! Maybe VGGRebuilds channel if it doesn't fit the motif of the main channel? Seriously, before RUclips you had to watch what a director and editor crafted, skipping half the most important details and nuance of tearing something apart...and the fun of it, like opening a dirty present. This video is so straightforward and interesting. I would ask for more closeups, like when you first started working on those lifters -- I really wanted to see what you were doing. Obviously it's just you, but it makes for compelling content. Is it possible to find a new block and re-use these parts? That would tie episodes together with a theme and keep us couch mechanics coming back for more...
Derek, you are an exceptional mechanic. I drive a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 4.8 liter with 494,000 miles and engine has NEVER been opened up. Proper maintenance is a very important detail for me. Thank you for this video, you sir are the best.
Dirt cheap engine build would be one hell of a video. This here was one hell of a teardown, and I appreciate the time and effort. I'm a fan of the engine teardowns on how and why an engine may have gone bad, and if it's worth saving or not.
This is a fantastic episode Derek.. Great for peeps who have not got so deep in an engine before, or for those of us that only take an engine apart once every 5 years... Thanks man, much appreciated.
I've been loving VGG videos for years. I've never "bleep booped" in the comments before, but Professor Derek just went next level. I've been teaching 23 years now and I rarely see someone with that depth of knowledge, the ability to explain things clearly, and a personality that keeps things fun and interesting. Carry on sir!
As much as I'm getting excited abou the revivals, I love these engine builds / tear downs for the abundance of clearly explained hands on knowledge. Thanks Derek!
Yes Derek, please do a budget build for us all to watch. This video was excellent! Very interesting. I like how you take your time to help us understand what you’re doing and why, AND you do it entertainingly! I hope to soon tackle an engine project myself and as grasshoppa, I must learn from you master!
One reason everyone likes this video is how well edited it is - we know it took way more than an hour to find those cracks, but it didn't feel like you left anything out! Excellent, excellent work cutting it down to a manageable size while showing every important detail. And yes, we want to see one going back together!
You gotta be a professional editor or something. I acknowledge and salute your work! Anyone with a brain in there head knows it took many hours to disassemble an engine and exlain how it works 🤯😅
I know you say don’t take your advice unless you’re desperate, but let me say that was one of the most interesting and educational videos I’ve seen in quite a long while. Thanks for making it and for being so thorough in describing what you were doing. I’d love to see you build one back from the block up, maybe with your sons’ working on it with you.
I would love to see a budget rebuild in the future. You, my friend, have definitely motivated me to try many things that I would have previously been too intimidated to attempt. Thank you for your content and for keeping it as simple to understand as possible. Grease stained fingernails is a badge of honor for this guy!!
As a retired mechanic this video really brought me back- I have been involved in countless 350 rebuilds for cam failure, and one theory that was going around at the time is that the loose timing chain is what causes the cam to wear, allowing it to snap back and forth instead or rotating smoothly. Someone else might have already commented on this, but honestly there are too many comments to plow through! Anyway, enjoyed the video.
Happy for you Derek. Went from setting everything on the floor, to lookin around and trying to decide which work bench to set things on in your beautiful shop. You deserve it. Excited for every bit of content you put out!
You have master mechanics and then you have gifted mechanics like Derek. All the books in the world and most wouldn’t be able to retain this amount of knowledge and regurgitate it on demand like this guy. This is the kind of guy you drop any car off to and have no doubts if it can be fixed he’ll fix it.
Thanks for your video you are spot on,I worked in a junk yard when I was 13 years old after school and the owner taught me how to overhaul engines. You explained the process so well I still learned something new every I watch your video. I am 75 and still a gear head.
This episode was amazing Derek. It really sucks about the block, but on the positive this was one of the most informative engine tear down / build videos I've ever seen, especially on youtube as a whole. You really went down into each possible issue, explained how or why it happened, explained how to fix each one and how to get away with it on a budget as well. This whole video was a win otherwise. If someone asked me about engines and analyzing them, this is the video I would show them. I would absolutely love to see a rebuild video, in this style especially. Thank you again Derek!
You've really done us a doozy here Derek! One of my favourites of yours without a doubt. People pay for this sort of knowledge and here you are doing the world a favour 🙌 lets keep this one very relevant for a long time to come!!
Hey Derek, sorry to see that that block was cracked, but would still love to see a budget build. Thanks for staying true to your roots. Always look forward to your videos
Anybody that does not have enough confidence to build their own motor nowadays with RUclips literally showing you step-by-step. You deserve what you get rebuilding an engine is ridiculously easy. I literally literally rebuilt engine with my nine-year-old kid told him what to do and watched him as he worked I would never bring a vehicle to a shop ever in my life.
One of the first VGG videos I ever watched was you rebuilding an SBC in your old home garage, it’s awesome to see how the channel has grown while also remaining true to its roots. God Bless.
Probably one of the most important and influential videos you've done Derek on your channel. We follow you through every adventure, every barn find and rescue, but most importantly, we all know a little more about what you're talking about. When you're going through an engine in the middle of a field, and it's taught me a lot about how engines really work. Invaluable information. Well done, sir.
You are probably one of the best teachers of this sort of thing that I've ever witnessed. You kept me captivated for the entire hour and I learned a lot. That being said, YES! please do a budget rebuild. I'd watch a whole series on something like that. keep being awesome sir
Derrick, thank you so much for this episode. For a guy in his late 30’s that has not been around engine building my Whole life this was so informative. I would love to see any other tear down and a build series with this much detail. You are the best there is hands down
Please do a rebuild series! You are showing us how to do things that are not easy, but you explain it and inspire us to try it for ourselves! Thank you for doing these types of videos!
YES to seeing a budget small block build. Preferably SBF, but doesn’t really matter. I’m interested in seeing a dingleberry hone and what parts should probably always be replaced and which ones can usually be kept. Also some tricks like converting to a roller cam might be cheap neat and practical.
Everytime you do one of these deep dive teardowns and inspections I learn something new. I never had anyone to teach me about engines so these videos tell me a whole lot of information. I know that you have talked about these very things in other videos but actually seeing one that shows exactly what you're talking about is much better. Thank you for taking the time to do this. It brings me one step closer to having the confidence to do more things myself.
Honestly one of your best videos. The information/knowledge you shared is on point. I've been a mechanic for the better part of my 53 years on this planet and have "rebuilt" many different engines. A large number of them being sbc's. A bunch built with a ball hone, rings, bearings, and a gasket set along with new cam/lifters and oil pump with great success. Simple works just fine a lot of the time. Thanks for another great video.
It was all due to lack of communication. A engineer changed something and the operator didn't tell the next operator to be able to tell me. I had to figure it out by trying everything that maintenance didn't lol
I would really like to see a full in depth budget build of a SBC with just a few power upgrades, slightly lumpy cam, cheapo aluminum heads, long tube headers, etc. Maybe even a TBI build because you don't see a lot of those. But just a guide for something your average DIY Joe can throw together over a weekend and slam into the work truck. Either way, great video as always!
I decided that Derek knows his trade very well when I watched his BBC build video where he taught all the important stuff about valve train geometry. Even an old guy like me understood it the way he taught it. Knowledge and the talent to pass it along, He’s being modest as usual.
Yup. I know most of his videos are kind of entertaining roadkill-ish type, but this video and the BBC one you are referencing show that Derek really does know what he is doing.
Early Ford Sprint colors black and gold were my favorite. I could just smell the engine when you pulled off the intake. Nice job with the tutorial. Smokey would have been proud!
Please do a budget build! I love learning new ways and techniques to do it. I’ve never done one but after watching you do it for years now, I feel really confident I can build one. God bless you and your family Derek!
I used to hang out,and watch my dad when he did a rebuild..God rest his soul...He taught me mechanics, and body work..Shoved a wrench or piece of sandpaper in my hand, and stated "one day you'll thank me"...Shops only get to replace my tires thanks to him...Nice video brotherman. A shame the blocks no good👍
What a great tear down full of amazing tips and things to look for. Im a little sad this wasnt able to be rebuilt, but the parts can revive another engine hopefully
I actually love these more in depth videos. It’s something that often gets stepped over or we just get a quick “we’re installing new pistons” and you see 5 seconds and bam it’s all done. Would love to see a budget build video!
This man is passing out automtive wisdom that isn't available elsewhere. His smarts didn't come from books... it's easy to eat when it comes like this. Thank you...
Well his automotive smarts kinda sorta came from books but not your typical books he has said in a interview that he grew up reading those old books about how things worked(cant recall what they were called)/repair manuals & similar type of books but he also learned alot from just jumping into a project an learning about said project as he went along working on it..
Great episode. I’d love to see a very budget rebuild, maybe with follow ups on it in a vehicle to see how it’s holding up, compression, oil pressure, leaks, vacuum reading after 10k, 20k, and 30k miles. I’ve always wondered how well budget rebuilds work.
I'm a flat 4 aircooled VW man, yet its amazing how many things are common when diagnosing any engine, like this here 350. All good advice and takes the intimidation factor out of tearing down your own motor. Thanks Derek, I'd love to see a small block budget build with a few performance upgrades.
Been a while since I rebuilt an engine but watching this video brought me back to grade 12 auto shop in 1980 when I rebuilt my first 327 Chevy engine . I remember our teacher describing the process in disassembly just as you did , great memories. Thanks for the great video Derek, was fun watching and reminiscing 👍
Thank you so much for this Derek. I really appreciate the time and effort you take to explain this to us fellers/fellets. Have enjoyed the previous rebuild videos you did in the past, but would love to see another rebuild video.
Thanks for doing all you and family do and done for us and a guy!... you've helped a lot of us learn on a few things and we've all enjoyed all you do too!! So a massive thank you guys. We really appreciate you very much 😊
Loved this video, really learned a lot. Not that I’ll ever do anything with it, but still loved it. YES I would love to see a complete build, please. Btw love your knowledge, humor and family focus.
Thank you for doing this video. I was really hoping you would. I would LOVE to see a cheap build, maybe finding a new block and use some of the good parts you found. Anyways, thank you so much! Keep up the great work! You're the best!!
Yeah, definitely do a build from scratch. Ideally, I'd love to see a big block with a couple of turbos on it, but that might be too high tech for some of the subscribers. Really any kind of a build is always fun!
More, please. You are providing knowledge that isn't in most books, based on years of experience, about what you have to do, and what you can let slide. Priceless!
I have helped tear down motors before when I was a kid, but I never really knew what I was looking for or at. I was really enjoying the explanation that you went through step by step. I would really like to see a rebuild in the future if that is possible. Thank you very much. Love the show.
Man I loved this! Thank you for taking the time to go through it! I think many of us, I know I am, scared of tearing a motor down to this point. Also, yes I’d love to see a budget small block build no matter Ford, Chevy, etc
This was awesome to watch! I am quite familiar with these engines so I understood what I was looking at. Now my girl is becoming more interested in cars and engines herself, and I had her watch this episode. She said that she learned so much while watching it, and now she can correctly identify many of the parts in an engine! She loves your show btw and would rather watch it than pretty much anything else on tv now! She said she will help me on my next engine rebuild!
If a new guy to engine work wanted to learn how to rebuild an engine right, this is the video to watch! Tons of how to do it info. Thanks to Derek and family for the fantastic Vids.
I built first engine in high school. 2003. Still watching this. Have a few cars/trucks. Can't spend alot on all of them. Thanks Keep up the regular talk.
Yes indeed Derek on the budget build. It's amazing what's stored in you head... Tons of experience and you know how to use it. I'm very glad I found your channel!!!!
Would love to see a follow up on this build that includes the assembly of this engine ( with a new block ). Yes, I have looked at all the previous builds also but it just doesn’t get boring to watch a knowledgeable guy explaining about engines. Thank you Derek
My favorite Chevy engine color is the chartreuse yellow used on early 1957 265s. My favorite overall is the AMC metallic blue engine paint they used in the late 60s to mid 70s.
I know these types of vlogs take a lot of time and effort to provide., but this is why I originally subscribed to your channel. With the small block you rebuild, I enjoy seeing and learning more from you.
I like these videos, we love the revivals and shows/events but when you trickle in some deep dives like this, I always learn something. Another cool rebuild would be awesome down the road.
I’m currently in my basic engines class at UTI and I have routinely come back to this video to have a different perspective and different explanations of small blocks/big blocks. Genuinely Derek from the bottom of my heart a huge thank you. I am going into this trade because of you, my work ethic has increased because of you and my knowledge of different vehicle systems has increased because of you. Thank you thank you thank you, for being a Guy that a young feller like me can look up to
Great Video as always, Derek. You would be an awesome Auto Shop Teacher, getting the next generation of car guys into the industry. I appreciate your Videos and what you and your family does to support the automotive community.
Baker right here, good job MR. Derek I been learning a lot from you teaching I look at it that this is your calling from upper above two teach the ones who don’t know, even when you fixing them up that heaven been running for many years and driving them thousands of miles back home.
This is nice Derek. I was following VGG WAYBACK in the day when you doing similar videos with your 1st gen Camaro engine. You used to demonstrate how to do a "poor man's" polish on the cam/crank journals with string and sandpaper. It's nice to see you getting back to the basics. Love the video!!!
I really appreciate you taking the time to record and post this, Derek! I literally just finished the engine repair section with my AST classes last week and this helps me to physically see what the concepts I learned are if that makes sense.
As more and more high schools are bringing back Votech classes (thankfully) this video should be showed day one, it is super informative and easy to follow. The job Derek does explaining every step and things you can do reminds me of Mr.Milford who taught auto tech my jr and sr years of HS back in the 80’s. Another fantastic video put out by VGG and look forward to more of them!!
I keep looking at the tired old carb 454 in my farm truck, and I've been considering making the leaks go on vacation for a few years. I keep getting hung up on what I can realistically get away with for mild performance increases on a budget, even if that just amounts to hauling more hay on each trip. I love seeing your budget-y builds, especially when there are budget-y improvements involved.
Another awesome video, Derek! I really appreciate your knowledge and sense of humor. No BS, and you explain every step so I can understand how and why. I dream of doing a ground up resto of a 1st gen S10 and you give me the confidence to try. I would love to see a 'budget build' of a small block or even a v6 for such a project.
Don't know how you find the time to do all the things you do on this channel! Great episode. Great information of what to look for. Would love to see a budget rebuild video as well. Can't go wrong with Chevy Orange. Looks like a feller has a good collection of go handle accessories! Great job Derek!
When you took this engine out I asked you to do a video on the teardown so I could learn how to inspect an engine and determine good from bad. Aaand you delivered! This gives me so much more confidence on working in the depths of an engine. I have been subscribed since you rescued that purple f body Camaro, and it has been amazing watching your channel grow. Much love from Cannannada! 🍁
I really appreciated this video and your explanations, Derek. I’ve always wanted to see an engine torn down and understand the construction. You nailed it bro! Thank you for this one and all your videos.
What a nice change to get back to some base level engine work. By all means show us a budget 350 build. I really enjoyed the 307 build you did. Thought you were gonna mention that project when you and Dulcich were taking about a viewers 283 in the recent interview.
I know you mentioned you weren't sure people would be interested in this, but I for one REALLY appreciate you putting this together. I've always wanted a good beginner's explanation of a full 350 teardown. You've done vids like this before, but I always want to learn more.
I’ve thought about doing a Z28 type 302 clone but don’t have a car to put it in! 😂

Great video, Derek. You would’ve made an amazing teacher. I appreciate how much of your experience you’re able to share with all of us.
Please do a budget build! I love learning new ways and techniques to do it. I’ve never done one but after watching you do it for years now, I feel really confident I can build one. God bless you and your family Derek!
I really enjoyed seeing the part about the lineup of bad lifters and then the rotation of the failed cam lobes. You made it easy to follow.
These are my favorite episodes, listening to Derek teach. I would love to see a "budget build" video.
Every time I see a VGG video get posted I stop what I’m doing and see what a fellers got for us today love the content Derek
I'm a flat 4 aircooled VW man, yet its amazing how many things are common when diagnosing any engine, like this here 350. All good advice and takes the intimidation factor out of tearing down your own motor. Thanks Derek, I'd love to see a small block budget build with a few performance upgrades.
There IS one from a few years ago, WITH dyno results....
I can’t tell you how much I enjoy this channel. I’ve been binging these videos like when I first found Breaking Bad. Keep ‘em coming, sir!
Love you sir. Keep up the great family content. You're a great dad and family man. Thank you for going against the grain of society.
I could not look away. I wanted to see it through the end. You are very good at what you do. Plain, simple and amusing. Thank you
I have rebuilt a few engines in my 60+ years, and the way you go through the process looks very much like how I do it. Enjoyed this one a great deal.
Loved the tear down and explanation!! A budget build would be awesome. Something to show the process of what to check for, clearances, etc.
I like the dark blue
I like the Chevy Orange
The quality of descriptions, explanations and knowledge is top standard! Thanks Derek! I wish they taught like this at college/tafe
I wanna do a small block chevy rebuild with my son so keep the good intel coming. Thanks for everything you do and God bless.
I parted 0ut many sbcs
Sounds like a keeper..
@@Blinknone shes definitely is! She even buys car parts now!
Love watching everything you put out. Would love to see a budget build.
yes, but i mean.. arent they all? more or less
If a new guy to engine work wanted to learn how to rebuild an engine right, this is the video to watch! Tons of how to do it info. Thanks to Derek and family for the fantastic Vids.
Thanks for doing this. I'm literally doing the same thing to a 305. Your opinion means a lot and helps push me in the direction I needed.
I built first engine in high school. 2003. Still watching this. Have a few cars/trucks. Can't spend alot on all of them. Thanks
Keep up the regular talk.
Yes indeed Derek on the budget build. It's amazing what's stored in you head... Tons of experience and you know how to use it. I'm very glad I found your channel!!!!
What a nice surprise a Vicegripgarage weekday video. Cheers Derek.
Glad you enjoyed it
Would love to see a follow up on this build that includes the assembly of this engine ( with a new block ). Yes, I have looked at all the previous builds also but it just doesn’t get boring to watch a knowledgeable guy explaining about engines. Thank you Derek
Derek, you are a wonderful father, and it shows in your 3 good boys. God has blessed you and Jennifer.
I hope you dont start using words like sparkalater and sparkles hahaha to name a few
Thank you thank you thank you, for being a Guy that a young feller like me can look up to
As someone who doesn't get to see too much in the way of US v8's here in the UK, I love episodes like this. Learn so much!
You make it look so easy. I really enjoy these teardowns, this is like a masterclass in automotive science. Really interesting!
Its not as hard as it sounds just take note😊
This dude is so humble and amazing I'm am a huge fan
Derek is the voice in my head when I’m working on cars
I keep looking at the tired old carb 454 in my farm truck, and I've been considering making the leaks go on vacation for a few years. I keep getting hung up on what I can realistically get away with for mild performance increases on a budget, even if that just amounts to hauling more hay on each trip. I love seeing your budget-y builds, especially when there are budget-y improvements involved.
Would love to see part two. I have never rebuilt an engine but you make it look less daunting. Love the channel...Howard From Toronto Canada
Once again thank you for teaching so many of us! I, as well as many I'm certain, would absolutely love to see a budget build!
