Arguably one of Mama & Papa’s best. This song encapsulated the music of the 60’s. As a teenager this song set the stage for a freedom mindset. I still remember where I was when hearing this song, not only the first time, but for many to follow. Still listening to this at 69. Lol! Cass’s voice is pure and just resonates like noone else.
Definitely not arguably. But maybe coz it is the greatest as far as a quantum relevant meaning in its realm. Politically than any song in any language. But usually when people talk art they mean art and not art as continuation of politics by other means And i am not saying this for sake of philosophy but for sake of survival. In my advance preparation, I noticed that Michelle Phillips had attended one of the schools whose team was playing (Marshall HS Barristers.) Song speaks of 3000 miles. Ken to Fl is 900 miles. Due to success. Ended up, I hitchhiked about 10,000 + miles (easy). during the 70's. The thumb did not use any oil !! and people were people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song was released in 1967. It's so good - it has stood the test of time. It's still enjoyable to listen to even in 2016 - as if not a day has gone by since 1967.
Are you sure? According to Wikipedia, the group "released a single of their own by the time the album appeared in December 1965. This single was "Go Where You Wanna Go", which was given a limited release in November but failed to chart. " You might be confusing the date with the version of the same song released later by the 5th Dimension.
To clarify yes it was released in December of 1965 and it was pulled of the market within days of release because it was felt California Dreaming had a better chance of of being a hit record so Dreaming was given an official release instead and it was a massive hit for them the manager made this call.
I don't think many realize the musical brilliance of this song. In the first minute, they go directly from a very good chorus, make an abrupt change in tone and timber, with momma Cass leading the way(you don't really that a girl like me can love just one man) now that was mostly Cass, then they transition seamlessly to the next bit starting with the "3000 miles...." which is distinct in sound from the prior. They made it sound easy but I'm sure this was far from easy, this could only be done with amazing talent and execution, or wonderful editing or a combination of both.
I have to agree with all the Cass lovers here. After the intro, she is featured, and it's great, but then she goes up a couple of keys, or something, I don't know, but the harmony is angelic, and MAGIC. Wow.
