This place they were in was called a "free store." Hippies in San Francisco would donate stuff like clothes, everything, and you could take anything you wanted for free. It was to help people who just got into town and didn't have anything.

Listening to the music and watching all these vids from the 60's LA scene just makes me wish it was 1965 & I'm 20 yrs. old, living in Laurel Canyon and hanging' out & partying with all the great groups from that '65-'70 era. That had to be a fun and exciting time!

I think we're the first generation to be able to look back at our actual lives in video. One of the mainstays of the 60s was the music. It was an integral part of all our lives. We saw what other people were doing and we were inspired. It just exploded from 1967 to 1970 when it ended at Kent State University, which I was at. We were in California in the 60s and all over, in the midwest, east, south. People were kind and innocent in a way. Pot smoking was a really liberating experience, a new way to look at things. When LSD started being widely used we slipped into a cosmic consciousness that has never left me to this day. I still believe in LOVE, the saving grace of our society. The Mamas and Papas were one of the first groups to really get on people's wavelengths.
In 1969 I was 6. I was in love with Both of these women. A very Sad day when Ms Cass Passed away. Thank you Mamas and Papas. you made life grand with your music!
The Mamas and Papas were the real thing that so many other groups wanted to emulate at the time. Real hippies who made it big but did not compromise their values or lifestyles. They were loved by so many other contemporary pop groups of their day and ending up organizing and inviting the best groups and budding talents of the time in what may have been the greatest pop-rock festival of all to come and every one thereafter to live up to - Monterrey Pop festival '67. Their soaring pop-rock-folk harmonies raised the bar like the Beatles did in their time to such a high level. You could pick almost every song they recorded and find the quality of musicianship, production, recording and harmonies brilliant and spellbinding. There will never be another Cass Elliot.
This came out in the Summer of 1966.... I was 15 years old. This was really hot stuff then, ahead of it's time and not psycadelic or all druggy. I lived where this was happening, in Southern California...... when it was a great place.

I've loved The Mamas and the Papas since I 1st heard them on the radio in the 60's. Mama Cass Elliot is an inspiration to me forever! I listen to Cass Elliot's music and sing & dance with her still! I love all of them and feel so sad knowing she and the guys are no longer with us. Cass singing those romantic songs made her the hit record's & her fab voice on the songs made the whole group perfect harmony! When I play their music my hubby will come out and sing-along with them, pretty good for old married couple. We love Cass Elliot & truly think everyone is beautiful in their own way. RIP Cass, sing like an angel.
Love them :). I can listen to their music over and over again and never grow tired of it. On another note, anyone else think that Denny looked handsome with that beard and mustache? :)
My favorite Mamas and the Papas song. Great harmonies. As last of baby boomers this was one of the groups I used to recall hearing on radio when I little boy. Cass Elliot had a lot of charisma and I agree with many who say she was heart of group.
On this day in 1966 {June 26th} "I Saw Her Again" by the Mamas and the Papas entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #53; and on July 24th, 1966 it peaked at #5 {for 1 week} and spent 9 weeks on the Top 100... And on August 8th, 1966 it reached #1 {for 1 week} on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart... Between 1966 and 1972 the quartet had fifteen Top 100 records; six made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Monday, Monday" for 3 weeks in 1966... They just miss having a second #1 when "Dedicated To The One I Love" peaked at #2 for 3 weeks in 1967... Sadly, three of the four members have passed away;Cass Elliot {1941 - 1974}, John Phillips {1935 - 2001}, Denny Doherty {1940 - 2007}, and Michelle Phillips, born Holly Michelle Gilliam, celebrated her 70th birthday twenty-two days ago on June 4th, 2014... May Cass, John, & Denny R.I.P.
Mama Cass was a beautiful lady! SO talented- I wish she got more recognition for both her amazing voice and being a pretty celebrity in a time when anxiously thin women were the standard of beauty. In regards to the song, I love the really selfish awful reasons for staying with a girl he doesn't love set to such an upbeat, happy SOUNDING song. The emotional swell of music makes you think romance and perfect happiness, the actual lyrics are almost craven and make me feel cynical/jaded and it's till my absolute FAV of all their songs. Just amazing, you don't often hear songs like this that sound at first so pleasant and positive
this group was such a delight...and so pleasing to the ear. Mama's voice stood above the rest. Who do we have in today's genre that can compare? I can answer my own question! NO ONE!
During my DJ days in LA I had the pure pleasure to interview Cass several times. What a delightful women and super talent. Love the way she sings "New World Coming" never a big hit but she really made the song come to life. Thank you for the posting.
I truly wish I had also been able to see Michelle last night... Well, I mean 20,000 nights ago... but I wasn't lonely then as I wasn't around. I missed a golden opportunity... but at least I have this song and live vicariously through Denny.
Michelle Phillips, has to be one of the greatest natural beauties of all times. And I love vocal harmonies like this. They don't make music like this anymore. No more harmonies like this. Sad.
I can still remember hearing of Cass Elliot's passing on the radio, back in July or August of 1974. She was over in England performing at the London Palladium Theater ~ so sad, she was somewhere around 34 I believe.
legend has it the catch and break in Denny's vocal at the end is where he realized the song was about him and Michelle. He choked while John and Cass kept going. It was so effective it was left in.
This song has been in my head for 2 days and I"ve been listening to it repeatedly. God, I wish I was around in the 1960's when music was indeed music and it sounded SO GOOD!!
I grew up in the 60s a truly loved the mamas and papas music.....all their songs were hits with my generation.....so sad that Michelle is sole survivor.....God I had a crush on that gal when I was in college.....those were the days of great songs and ballads....so sorry to the kids of today that don't have music....just noise played
gerald Wienckowski I hate this music generation. . .and I'm growing up with it (not listening to it just growing up while it's being recorded). I actually listen to this kind of stuff and it's much better than that autotuned shit.
gerald Wienckowski An argument and an agreeance. I was born in '88 and grew up in the 90's but the mamas and the papas were still a big part of my childhood, and I still regularly listen to them. I still, and always remember my mom blasting the mamas and the papas with a glass of wine in her hand and her dancing and singing as loud as she could while I ran circles around the coffee table (which at the time was my signature dance move, come to think of it, still is). I do agree that the majority of the music out now is just noise, but every generation has it's own great music and garbage music. I think you just need to pick and choose. This is great music that I'll listen to until the day I die
gerald Wienckowski I was born in 2003 and It really makes me sad having to grow up around such fake music with nobody knowing about the wonderful music like this 😢
I'm with y'all on the Michelle comments.. she was/is an inspiration, so much so that I married that look 34 yrs ago.. to a girl nearly her age (and somewhat older than me).. of course they don't 'look' like that today, but..still love her just the same.. Michelle..ohhh darlin
I liked that bit too, but it's easy to figure out how they did it -- they yanked the hat off with a piece of string, then ran the film backwards. But it's a charming bit!
The Mamas and Papas at their peak. They had one of the great contemporary composers in the late John Phillips. Cass Elliott had, without a doubt, the best popular music voice of the 1960s.
I love when Mama Cass does her little dance when she enters the store (the pony?). She was the real singing talent and I wish I could have met her out of all of them. Beautiful Beautiful woman!
One of the great songs of the Sixties...without question. Wonderful production, best of it's class...great arrangement, mind blowing vocal arrangement (listen to the backgrounds and how complex they are!). Just genius.
TheAerovons Supposedly John Lennon loved that little "stutter" near the end when Denny blows his cue and sings "I saw her...", he thought that was the best part of the whole song, it sounded so planned but it wasn't
Wow interesting to know! As a musician growing up in the Sixties, when I first heard the record I thought it was a mistake...but a cool one! Nice to know that's what it initially was thanks!

Gotta love Mama Cass is my favorite mama!! ♥♥♥
what a great song and production john phillips was a genius
What a fun and silly video. Still can’t get the smile off. Watching Michelle mugging for the camera; she really had a nack. So photogenic.
That's so amazing that it's hardly to believe to me
I always loved the song New World Coming. And It's Getting Better!
I just love Michelle. All her friends were so lucky to have spent time with her...
I truly wish I had also been able to see Michelle last night... Well, I mean 20,000 nights ago... but I wasn't lonely then as I wasn't around. I missed a golden opportunity... but at least I have this song and live vicariously through Denny.
Veo que los dejo con secuelas como a mi esa mujer
A Triumph and an E type. British brilliance and a brilliant American band!
We will never hear harmonies like this again, pure magic all four vocals, crisp and clean.
I've loved this song for 53 years and, Cass Elliott, as well!!! ♥️
What a tune, one which really embodies and encapsulates the mid-60s West Coast sound. The strings are so evocative and pleasant to the ear.
Without a doubt one of the greatest singing groups of all time.
I love this song!! I was born in 1966.
Fantastic group- a blast from the past-
The Wrecking Crew (Hal Blaine, percussionist was my grandfather) STRIKES AGAIN with another hit! Yea, baby! Yeah!
This song has been in my head for 2 days and I"ve been listening to it repeatedly. God, I wish I was around in the 1960's when music was indeed music and it sounded SO GOOD!!
I know, once you get this song in your head... it just stays :)
I was around in the 60´s. Welcome to paradise
sjdrifter72 It's been stuck in mine from Cali to Virginia
I'm a truck driver
Wow what talent !
Mama Cass was incredible
I grew up in the 60s a truly loved the mamas and papas music.....all their songs were hits with my generation.....so sad that Michelle is sole survivor.....God I had a crush on that gal when I was in college.....those were the days of great songs and ballads....so sorry to the kids of today that don't have music....just noise played
right you are Gerald, actually new music is mostly pre recorded electronic crap.
gerald Wienckowski I hate this music generation. . .and I'm growing up with it (not listening to it just growing up while it's being recorded).
XMonsterX Great memory... I better break this song out in the morning and dance with my kids in the kitchen :)
gerald Wienckowski I was born in 2003 and It really makes me sad having to grow up around such fake music with nobody knowing about the wonderful music like this 😢
This is a great, great song. The harmonies are absolutely superb. What a group!
I wish Cass Elliot could have been my friend. Been said before a million times but she had the voice of an angel.
I like the way the hat falls on Cass's head as she's walking to the store.
Yeah with all the riches this group had people tend to forget John's great songs.
Tune! Love this song! From a nineties child! Long live mamas and papas
I love when Mama Cass does her little dance when she enters the store (the pony?). She was the real singing talent and I wish I could have met her out of all of them. Beautiful Beautiful woman!
Me too, everybody lusted after Michelle, but Cass was probably more fun to hang out with because she’d be the first one to laugh at herself
Gotta watch her dance in Dancing in the Streets. Drives me crazy. I may be in love with this woman.
Nice to know that's what it initially was thanks!
jennifersman Actually, it was McCartney, not Lennon. "That had to be a mistake," he said. "No one's that clever."
+TheAerovons It was actually a mistake by Bones Howe, the producer :D But nonetheless, it still sounds amazing right?
