No matter what color hair she wore, no matter what style, no matter what she was wearing, no make-up, black and white, etc. Michelle Phillips for a period of 20 years was the most beautiful female I ever saw.
When you're only an eleven year-old boy, and you couldn't take your eyes off of her, you know Michelle definitely had the "it" factor. She was stunning! They were great musicians, but I never missed them on TV because of Michelle.
This place they were in was called a "free store." Hippies in San Francisco would donate stuff like clothes, everything, and you could take anything you wanted for free. It was to help people who just got into town and didn't have anything.
I LOVE Mama Cass! The world lost something when we lost her and Karen Carpenter. Nobody will ever sing like them. If there truly is a rock and roll heaven, I hope I can go there and meet her someday.
That's what I appreciated when Wilson Phillips broke in the 90s. You had the children of The Mama's and The Papas and The Beach Boys with their superb harmonies, proving that talent was genetic.
Cass Elliot was BEAUTIFUL inside & out, I don't understand why that's so hard for some people to see ? She was talented, intelligent & lost to us much to soon. My favorite part of the song is at 2:44, when Denny Doherty sings the line beforehand and at 2:47 the entire band sings the line. According to legend, it was a mistake and Lou Adler, the producer, kept it in to give it an original sound. It is indeed a very classic record and one my favorite recordings.
It absolutely was a mistake. The only ones to solve this were the Beatles. McCartney said that the second they heard Denny come in, they said “That was a mistake.” Everyone loved it so much they left it in. Awesome choice!!!!!!
that mistake and the backing vocals in the final chorus are what really put the song over the top for me. it's like the character in the song, probably written as denny himself, has gone through this cycle so many times he has to start, stop, consider, and then carry on anyway.

What I consider to be the best mixed vocal group of the 60's. Such incredibly talented people. I've wondered over the years why there hasn't been a tribute group. The answer is simply no one else could ever duplicate their sound.
The Mamas and Papas were the real thing that so many other groups wanted to emulate at the time. Real hippies who made it big but did not compromise their values or lifestyles. They were loved by so many other contemporary pop groups of their day and ending up organizing and inviting the best groups and budding talents of the time in what may have been the greatest pop-rock festival of all to come and every one thereafter to live up to - Monterrey Pop festival '67. Their soaring pop-rock-folk harmonies raised the bar like the Beatles did in their time to such a high level. You could pick almost every song they recorded and find the quality of musicianship, production, recording and harmonies brilliant and spellbinding. There will never be another Cass Elliot.
In 1969 I was 6. I was in love with Both of these women. A very Sad day when Ms Cass Passed away. Thank you Mamas and Papas. you made life grand with your music!
I've loved The Mamas and the Papas since I 1st heard them on the radio in the 60's. Mama Cass Elliot is an inspiration to me forever! I listen to Cass Elliot's music and sing & dance with her still! I love all of them and feel so sad knowing she and the guys are no longer with us. Cass singing those romantic songs made her the hit record's & her fab voice on the songs made the whole group perfect harmony! When I play their music my hubby will come out and sing-along with them, pretty good for old married couple. We love Cass Elliot & truly think everyone is beautiful in their own way. RIP Cass, sing like an angel.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME.. MAMA CASS, SHE WAS THE BEST! i GREW UP WITH THEIR MUSIC...IM GOING THRU THE WHOLE PLAY LIST RIGHT NOW...IT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD HAPPY...AS A FLOWER CHILD OF THE 60'S
This song should be cited as an example of how to construct the perfect pop tune. Everything about it is brilliant--the harmonies, the melody, everything. The Mamas and the Papas created some of the finest tunes of all time. It almost makes me weep wishing there was more music like this.
It could only last a few years. People are not aware how they fused their folk roots with high level production rock. The vibration was so high it was naturally limited over time. When it was happening, nothing finer.
@@walterpewen7903 Truly great observation here. Lou Adler Wrecking Crew how could you go wrong really. Their other legacy is of course Monterey. Cass lives on John went and screwed up. I'm interested in hearing their folk stuff now. Not that Mighty Wind stuff I hope. Joni Mitchell has a cringeworthy vid out there interesting only for its historical worth and her early beauty
You forgot the early vocal at the key change. An accident left in that works perfectly. Adds that frisson of excitement in a new illicit relationship. Perfection
terrible, knew it was a mistake the moment I first heard it. The personal love of a group doesnt extend to poor quality performance standards to save a buck . Betcha it was hotly contested and rightly so . as well as the rest of the orchestration horrendous background arrangement . The song doesnt have a clue what or where it is .
On this day in 1966 {June 26th} "I Saw Her Again" by the Mamas and the Papas entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #53; and on July 24th, 1966 it peaked at #5 {for 1 week} and spent 9 weeks on the Top 100... And on August 8th, 1966 it reached #1 {for 1 week} on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart... Between 1966 and 1972 the quartet had fifteen Top 100 records; six made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Monday, Monday" for 3 weeks in 1966... They just miss having a second #1 when "Dedicated To The One I Love" peaked at #2 for 3 weeks in 1967... Sadly, three of the four members have passed away;Cass Elliot {1941 - 1974}, John Phillips {1935 - 2001}, Denny Doherty {1940 - 2007}, and Michelle Phillips, born Holly Michelle Gilliam, celebrated her 70th birthday twenty-two days ago on June 4th, 2014... May Cass, John, & Denny R.I.P.
It's interesting to note that this song was written as a punishment for Denny and Michelle after they were caught in an affair. No better than to create a reminder in a song that eventually became such a hit. Very clever there, John.
this group was such a delight...and so pleasing to the ear. Mama's voice stood above the rest. Who do we have in today's genre that can compare? I can answer my own question! NO ONE!
My favorite Mamas and the Papas song. Great harmonies. As last of baby boomers this was one of the groups I used to recall hearing on radio when I little boy. Cass Elliot had a lot of charisma and I agree with many who say she was heart of group.
I think we're the first generation to be able to look back at our actual lives in video. One of the mainstays of the 60s was the music. It was an integral part of all our lives. We saw what other people were doing and we were inspired. It just exploded from 1967 to 1970 when it ended at Kent State University, which I was at. We were in California in the 60s and all over, in the midwest, east, south. People were kind and innocent in a way. Pot smoking was a really liberating experience, a new way to look at things. When LSD started being widely used we slipped into a cosmic consciousness that has never left me to this day. I still believe in LOVE, the saving grace of our society. The Mamas and Papas were one of the first groups to really get on people's wavelengths.
This was my very first favorite song ever. I was about 5 years old and my mom had a 45 record of this song and I just fell in love with it and still do to this day. Mama Cass still had a lot of living to do. Its heartbreaking that she died so young.
This came out in the Summer of 1966.... I was 15 years old. This was really hot stuff then, ahead of it's time and not psycadelic or all druggy. I lived where this was happening, in Southern California...... when it was a great place.
What great years they were! Every week your radio would explode with a new Creation. The day that Mama Cass died one of my good friends in Bible College went into the bush and cried herself dry. Those were the days my friend
😊 Nice music video, they should have done more, they were good at it. Michelle had a full of herself charm that was perfect for the camera, a nice gal with an attitude that makes her more endearing.
I loved Cass Elliot. So did my mom, a hopeless square who likes Andy Williams. She liked "Dream a Little Dream" and "Words of Love," stuff like that. I was a kid with my mom when it came over the radio on a nice summer morning that Cass had died. She was shocked and sad, and she called my dad at work. We had their albums. Those four were magic together.
What an Absolutely Incredible Video of one of my All time favorite Pop Groups of the 60's and 70's.. And Yes... Mama Cass would have had an Incredible Solo Career She was an Icon and a Legendary Talent... Monday Monday was the only #1 on the Charts by them.. Thanks for Sharing this Amazing Video and Song with the World.. It is Almost Haunting to see them so Young and Vibrant... I was there... 18 years old in 1970...
This marvelous group was "star crossed " Every young man in the world that saw Michelle fell for her . We all loved the combination of their talents & voices , but few would have changed places.
This song has been in my head for 2 days and I"ve been listening to it repeatedly. God, I wish I was around in the 1960's when music was indeed music and it sounded SO GOOD!!
One of the great songs of the Sixties...without question. Wonderful production, best of it's class...great arrangement, mind blowing vocal arrangement (listen to the backgrounds and how complex they are!). Just genius.
TheAerovons Supposedly John Lennon loved that little "stutter" near the end when Denny blows his cue and sings "I saw her...", he thought that was the best part of the whole song, it sounded so planned but it wasn't
Wow interesting to know! As a musician growing up in the Sixties, when I first heard the record I thought it was a mistake...but a cool one! Nice to know that's what it initially was thanks!
The nice thing about being older is the fact that we had the chance to be there during this time when music was music. Carly Simon, Mamma's and Pappa's,The Hollies, and so many more.
Whatever happened to the art of songwriting? There was a time when it was everything.....Music of this caliber is still being played regularly almost 50 years later. NOTHING from the last 10 years will be being played 50 years from now. I feel privileged to have lived through this era and experienced all of this when it was new....
This video is solid gold!! What a gem! So awesome, real live footage from the 60's on what appears to be Santa Monica BLVD in LA. OH MY GOD. Michelle is just a goddess here. And Cass, adorable!! Thank you for posting. Thank you SO MUCH!!!
I was born in 72 so after these days but man this is one of the best bands ever and my guilty pleasure! I grew up knowing who they were though since my dad would of been a teen in the late 60s so I grew up with 50, 60s and 70s music and it all is still my favorite as well as 80s! Does any 70s kids remember Cass Elliot on a Scooby Doo cartoon episode! My husband born in 69 just reminded me and so I looked it up here on RUclips! It makes me sad and sick because they even made fun of her weight in the cartoon! She was a good sport about it but it had to of been painful! Anyway I love The Mamas and the Papas! One of my favorite songs ever is the Mama Cass rendition of “Dream a Little Dream of Me”...I love to drive in my car and blast that on my speakers!
Rudolf...you are so correct....it was a great time for growing up...this music cannot be replaced....I am thankful I grew up a boomer of the 60's....only the hell on earth known as viet nam was a life changing experience...but some of us survived....I am 70 yoa and this music keeps me young and stuck in the 60's

What I consider to be the best mixed vocal group of the 60's. Such incredibly talented people. I've wondered over the years why there hasn't been a tribute group. The answer is simply no one else could ever duplicate their sound.
And you are?
The Wrecking Crew (Hal Blaine, percussionist was my grandfather) STRIKES AGAIN with another hit! Yea, baby! Yeah!
I can smell the 70s California just listening to the mamas and papas!...great days!...THE BEST!
We will never hear harmonies like this again, pure magic all four vocals, crisp and clean.
Wrecking Crew ? perfect name for a production here that totally tanks and hits the wall
Wow what talent !
Mama Cass was incredible
Very cool video. A slice of life from the 60’s. Michelle very glamorous.
I was wondering about the meaning of it. Thanks
Stunningly done too! It’s a great song. Hard to get footage of Denny singing it though 😂 love the mistake too. So good it stayed in!
Michelle knew Cass loved Denny. What a betrayal.
@Sandra Grear and John loved Michelle, so there's another betrayal. I sincerely hope they all work it out one day.
Mama Cass a fantastic voice
this group was such a delight...and so pleasing to the ear. Mama's voice stood above the rest. Who do we have in today's genre that can compare? I can answer my own question! NO ONE!
Far out! My eyes were fixated on Michelle! :-)
Mid 60s in California was the place to be.
My favorite Mamas and the Papas song. Great harmonies. As last of baby boomers this was one of the groups I used to recall hearing on radio when I little boy. Cass Elliot had a lot of charisma and I agree with many who say she was heart of group.
Michelle Phillips is so Beautiful here gawd!
One of the best bands of all time, superb harmonies and tremendous songs.
They had it all, days very sadly missed.
I guess a beautiful sunny morning and an occasion that can never be reproduced, re-enacted or faked. How wonderful for this to be captured on film.
Would have been even better if it was in color.
The Mamas and the Papas provided the soundtrack to my adolescence.
I love this song.....❤
I would love to hear the original audio for this video.
Beautiful Music,Beautiful Time Forever!
Beautiful 60s California sunshine music from four beautiful people.
They were just a flash in the pan in time. But boy's and girls what a flash they were. Thank you Pamfino2 for the video.
Cass was an incredible talent.
Gone way to young. I can only imagine what she would have accomplished. ❤️❤️❤️
This was my very first favorite song ever. I was about 5 years old and my mom had a 45 record of this song and I just fell in love with it and still do to this day.
Mama Cass still had a lot of living to do. Its heartbreaking that she died so young.
so underrated were this group.
timeless classics.thanx for the post
I wish Cass Elliot could have been my friend. Been said before a million times but she had the voice of an angel.
This came out in the Summer of 1966.... I was 15 years old. This was really hot stuff then, ahead of it's time and not psycadelic or all druggy. I lived where this was happening, in Southern California...... when it was a great place.
This is a great, great song. The harmonies are absolutely superb. What a group!
It's like a little silent-film era comedy skit.
@@barbarakiewe4917 😊 Good description.
I'd love to see a biopic movie about Cass Elliot someday. Melissa McCarthy would be awesome playing her.
I've loved this song for 53 years and, Cass Elliott, as well!!! ♥️
A Triumph and an E type. British brilliance and a brilliant American band!
Those jeans look so good on Michelle Phillips. They look so good. Good good good good good good good good
Michelle Phillips was a hot looking lady.
What doesn't look good on her?
What an Absolutely Incredible Video of one of my All time favorite Pop Groups of the 60's and 70's.. And Yes... Mama Cass would have had an Incredible Solo Career She was an Icon and a Legendary Talent... Monday Monday was the only #1 on the Charts by them.. Thanks for Sharing this Amazing Video and Song with the World.. It is Almost Haunting to see them so Young and Vibrant... I was there... 18 years old in 1970...
Absolutely! What Kelly Clarkson’s doing now in music, in Vegas, and on daytime TV is EXACTLY what Cass would be doing now if she’d lived
Great song, greater group. These four killed it.
Mama Cass always had that dance, moving her go go boots or shoes. Love it!
I remember when this song came out, they were on a roll, Wonderful vocal harmonies.
I know, once you get this song in your head... it just stays :)
I was around in the 60´s. Welcome to paradise
sjdrifter72 It's been stuck in mine from Cali to Virginia
I'm a truck driver
love this song, probably their best song in my opinion.
Nice to know that's what it initially was thanks!
jennifersman Actually, it was McCartney, not Lennon. "That had to be a mistake," he said. "No one's that clever."
+TheAerovons It was actually a mistake by Bones Howe, the producer :D But nonetheless, it still sounds amazing right?
Papa John, Mama Cass and Brother Denny ..... Rest Well
The nice thing about being older is the fact that we had the chance to be there during this time when music was music.
This song brings back the emotions of my youth and love.
One of my favorite songs ever is the Mama Cass rendition of “Dream a Little Dream of Me”...I love to drive in my car and blast that on my speakers!
oh! what a memories! I was young and with this song a promises for a great future
