Zager & Evans - In the Year 2525

- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2014
- Here's a music video I cut together with footage from the classic apocalyptic sci-fi film Metropolis, combined with sci-fi folk song In The Year 2525 by Zager & Evans. I really found them fitting together in a dystopian transhumanist meets Aldous Huxley's Brave New World kind of way. What awaits humanity after the intense technological and biological developments set in motion? If we ever get there? Thea von Harbou had some intensively accurate visions of the future. And Fritz Lang did the visual masterpiece. Not to forget Brigitte Helm and her impressive acting. All this is now a classic topic about the future of humanity. In this video I wanted to concentrate the idea, the message and the visions of the future. With the classic one hit wonder song and outstanding vintage film footage.

LYRICS
In the year 2525, if man is still alive
If woman can survive, they may find
In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lie
Everything you think, do and say
Is in the pill you took today
In the year 4545
You ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at you
In the year 5555
Your arms hangin' limp at your sides
Your legs got nothin' to do
Some machine's doin' that for you
In the year 6565
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube
In the year 7510
If God's a-coming, He oughta make it by then
Maybe He'll look around Himself and say
"Guess it's time for the Judgement Day"
In the year 8510
God is gonna shake His mighty head
He'll either say, "I'm pleased where man has been"
Or tear it down, and start again
In the year 9595
I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing
Now it's been ten thousand years, man has cried a billion tears
For what, he never knew, now man's reign is through
But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight
So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday

2023 now and I remember this song when it was released. 'Man has taken everything this old Earth can give and he aint put back nothing' - how prophetic.

Hopefully we can still go a U-Turn

This song was written when global freezing was a thing... 🤣
Nah it's the race of doom like DEVO said.
Seems like we’re ahead of schedule
Yeah, You already know that but I'd guess that they took these years for stylistic purposes only and not because in 1969 they lacked the scope of how fast things would move during 10,000 years.

you can thank the Beast for Knowledge will abound in the Last of Days
I have (as many other people - but not those who were born after the early 90s) seen the world before the Internet and global mobile networks. It was very different. The world was bigger and information was mostly available from books/newpapers/magazines and maybe audio sources and perhaps Norton help files and text files on floppy and directly from people. Human communication/contact was very direct. I mean, we used phone booths OMG. I, myself, can only imagine the world before the computers and abundance of landline phones. When I was a child, to my fortunate, my father worked for a computer company and we had original IBM PCs at home. But most people had no computers. Some had C64s, Amigas and few had IBMs and some IBM compatibles. The closest to web sites were Bulletin Board System servers that could be reached via voice modems. Even that looked very advanced. Today, it looks odd if someone owns no computers or smart phones.
I can hardly imagine what the future looks like. Say, 50 years from now. A hundred.
Looks more like 2025 for all these predictions.
Unfortunately

Ik there’s better examples then this and many more people that has stated this years before, also years later.
Dark, dark song, but I've loved it for years. Prophetic.
@williampatrick2971 Thats actually already happened. Freaky.
@@williampatrick2971 and what's so disturbing about it? It's a new way to procreate, way less risky and way more efficient than live birth. Give it about 30-40 years, and humanity will have divorced its organic components and switched to artificial synthetic bodies. That is if advanced AI wouldn't have already replaced us as a species by then. Only good things can come from that, the way we are living right now is a literal nightmare.
The idea of humanity making it to 2525 is the most optimistic thing I’ve heard in a long while.
As that's just over 500 years away, i'll tke that bet!
Dude 500 years is nothing. Humanity had been around much longer than that. We've found that modern humans may have existed longer than we even thought. Thousands and thousands of years. Modern humans have existed for at least 10,000 years... imagine what the ancient peoples thought of it being our time. They never imagined we'd be around in 2021. Some of them thought the world would have ended dozens of times by now..
Hell, even if we nuke each other, some small pockets of humanity will survive. Have more faith in your species. A lot of us are fucked up, but there's also so much potential for good in us.
@@I_am_a_cat_ The Bible says the world is about 6,000 years old and I believe what he Bible says.
@@1223jamez You're not very smart then, are you?
You know the bible says some other ridiculous stuff too? Like.. "Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material" yet I guarantee that you're doing just that right now.
Like come on dude. You cannot say you believe one part, but not the other ridiculous things. I could go on and on and on about all the stupid made up shit in the bible.
If I wrote down a bunch of stories, Put them in a book, and then said book was found buried in the ground 2000 years later.. Does that make everything in the book true? No? Of course not. Just because it was written by ancient humans, that doesn't make it real. You're trusting the accounts of people that didn't even know we live on a planet. People that didn't even know what makes rain happen. People that were superstitious about EVERYTHING.
You're going to trust those people with your eternal soul? LOL.
Lets try this. Here's some ridiculous stuff you like to ignore.
What about "When a woman has a discharge, if her discharge in her body is blood, she shall continue in her menstrual impurity for seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening. Everything also on which she lies during her menstrual impurity shall be unclean, and everything on which she sits shall be unclean." Leviticus 15: 19-20
How about "Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. But all the girls who have not known man intimately, spare for yourselves." Numbers 31:17-18
Ohhh how about this one eh? So you believe in owning slaves then? Because the bible says that, too. "You may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way." Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT
Get your head out of your ass. It wont kill you to admit you're wrong.

The 1927 movie Metropolis had special video effects that were way ahead of it's time. Excellent use of scenes from the movie along with the music!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Building actual sets and models take a long time and money. But they tend to have a better look. Think the original dune costumes and inside sets, or original blade runner. Cgi has it's place like in outer space or dinosaurs. But a lot of stuff that could be done with real sets, just looks really fake with CGI it seems very lazy and cheap. Digital sensors can't complete with film quite yet. They remastered this film, look how good it stands up to video especially from they first changed over. Tv programs shot on video lets say in te 90s look horrible to say even Bonanza shot on film. Especially when remastered to modern video standards. I can only imagine how good the original film looks.

Being 72 years old, I have seen a lot. That being said, I'm not sure we will make it to 2525 much less 10,000 years. I have always enjoyed this song, even though it is a little dark.
Agree sound very dark
I can't believe people even worry about things like 10000 years from now. People are just another critter in a long parade of critters to go extinct. No biggie.
I remember a time when we all assumed nuclear war was a given, not an if but a when. When they drop the bomb it will all be over.
People don't realize how the Cold War was a key change in history. It was the first time that apart from religious beliefs, the End Of the World was a real possibility. We could really do it and we still can and now we'll always be able to.
But we got through. Maybe it's always going to be like that, and people will find a way to muddle through one day at a time.
The song has more meaning today. But we are not going to make it. We are well into the Sixth Mass Extinction Event. We are also experiencing a Civilisation Systems Collapse. I'm in the same age bracket.
@@robertfletcher3421 chill my guy. Nobody knows the future. We maybe alive for only 20 years or 10,000 years. We maybe living in an extinction event or we may not. People have predicted the end of humanity for centuries and yet nothing has happened. For example, people predicted the end by nuclear war and yet, we made it through. Don’t believe everything the media or politicians say about the future because they sometimes tend to over exaggerate things. Look, what I’m trying to say is that even if the end is near or not, we should enjoy everyday of our lives like it is the last, because we don’t know what will happen tomorrow.

I'd have been 12 (ish!) and I can honestly say that this song MUST have been written with input from a greater power... ;-)
Perhaps the most famous one hit wonder of all time.
it's 2024 and i love this song! ❤
This is genuinely one of my favourite videos on RUclips, whenever I think of this song, I think of Metropolis and whenever I think of Metropolis, I think of this song and that is extremely high praise
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Your welcome!

Hi hello there, your Absolutely right, Zagar and Evan's song in the 2525, Although where not quite there as of yet, mike LONDON UK
See also BALL OF CONFUSION by the Temptations. ✌✌✌
Sure it is unless you’re cynical
Metropolis was so far ahead of its time. It's almost ahead of _our_ time
It will be ahead of the times way ahead of ours
true
I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing it in our lifetime.
So true
almost ahead? A blind mans' view.
This song terrified me as a child, I just heard it on the radio and still gives me chills, incredibly prophetic, we're on our way for sure 😞
Anyone getting shivers?
This song is such an unsettling prediction of a future that I hope we never see.
Agreed.
JsaBuilds sits nearly here.not long now
To Live is an Act of Courage
“I saw not my own courage in dying, but his courage broken by the loss of me. So I said to myself, ‘You must live’. Sometimes even to live is an act of courage” Seneca (4BC-65AD) #suicideawareness
It's so depressing!
The future is here ...
The year 2525 has arrived a lot sooner than everyone thought.
of course when this song was written the internet was just a pipe dream.
It's not here yet!!
Sure! 505 years from now is practically right around the corner!
Yall didnt get the metaphor

Your funny
Imagine having a manager who declines a Woodstock invitation 😳.
Now they only had this one hit song, but what a song it is!
❤I dedicate this song to the only man I have ever truly loved. Good times and rough times. He is always there 😊❤❤❤
Love is strange and a Blessing ❤❤😊❤
I remember this song so well. I believe it was 1969. Not many of us ever thought this would come true. Now we are seeing the coming of this!
In 1969 I could not imagine being here in 2022 and I'm damn sure not going to be here in 25 25 thank the Lord
Very true, it is coming a lot earlier than 2525...
Summer of 1969. 2525 is here!!
Looked into geting the book. Just did not have that kind of money.
@@elmastro-ye9lw ok, Go read To To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
Kind of underestimated it by five centuries, Zager and Evans, but you did predict it. It's already here.
This song is something we need to take seriously the way things are going around us today
How fitting this song is, considering the world we live in now. Salutations to the year 2525, from 2023. I hope there's still someone alive then.
I used to listen to this in the Nam. I turned 21 over there Nov 4, 1969 on guard duty on bunker 9 on Camp Eagle. A tune with a lot of memories and meaning for me. Stay well folks.
Happy birthday 🎂
Even if people back then didn't appreciate what you did (Even if it may have not been by your choice), I want to say now thank you for putting your life on the line. I'm glad you made it back home. Be well.
Brigitte Helm, the actress playing the Robot/Maria in Metropolis survived until 1996. She was 90. She was 20 yrs old when she made the movie.
She did her contracted 10 years in the film industry then married and settled down in Switzerland. Not many get out of the industry before it's too late.
"My whole film career is a matter of indifference to me. I would much rather be a housewife: to cook, bring up children and look after my husband."
- Brigitte Helm
She was astonishingly beautiful. What more needs to be said.
i loved the song as a child and still love it and 2025 was soooo far away and now i will experience it
It’s 2525 not 2025 a 500 year difference lol
Listing to this in 2023 and it still scares me 😢
In the year 2021, Metropolis has not been redone. The original still holds strong, cgi would be so wrong.
Starring Lupita Nyong'o as Maria.
Doesn't need to be 'redone'. Will be reality soon.
In the year 2022, we truly are through. Animals are going extinct fast, and all because of the price on gas. Woah!
I agree!
This will be played at humanity’s funeral
My wife just bought me a Zager guitar and I’m learning all about Denny Zager and Zager and Evans. And I love my new guitar! Thanks, Denny!
This song is a sad prediction for humanity.
People in 1927: in the future we gonna have machines doing everything for us
People in 2021: go bacc I wanna return to monke
Uhm, it's not actually machines doing the work in the movie, it's slaves.
WEF.
World is retuning to monke
Some people will go back and some people will go forward that's up to them monkeys have more fun while we making all this useless stuff anyways toys and stuff that we really don't need that pollutes the world
@@bogusmogus9551 well if existed for millions and millions of years don't you think this already happened already that goes to monkey to modern to monkey to modern remember destroyed a few times already
Who else is banging this in 2020 whilst beeing still alive?
It is 2020, I'm banging this but I'm doubting that I'm alive anymore...!
Still here.
Right there with you! Humans are quite the interesting species.
Nope I died 7 years ago. Greetings from 6 ft under.

I cry a billion tears of joy ...and i will love him till eternal night ends . From him to Eternity ❤...Best wishes from Hamburg/Germany.
Lost my best friend too...know how that feels...
This song scared me when I was younger... Now it's 2023!!!
When I first heard this song at age 13, I assumed that humanity was wise enough to avoid such calamity. Now I'm not so sure. Have mercy on us.
@bowecho - LOL Yeah . . I remember hearing this song when I had to go to summer school that year. Got up to #1 in L.A. in July 1969. Also remember listening to the radio, how the song meaning use to freak people out.
@@oldschoolrr6077 now is all real so real
The writers knew better.
Lets work for a future that is sustainable and worth living
yes scary
You’ll pick your son, pick your daughter too, from the bottom of a long glass tube. How prophetic was that 😮
It wasn’t prophetic, it’s planned by “them” it’s old technology being brought out to use against us. Seriously.
Yes. All started with Louise Brown.
Won't need a husband, won't need no wife
@@kingkoi6542 One of my kids was made that way (through IVF). Not exactly a "long glass tube." More like a petri dish.
@@theeclectic2919 I think the concern comes from trying to pick and create "perfect" children, so they are grown and tailored in glass tubes. I wish you and your family all the peace and blessing!
All this is already happening. I think they were really singing about 2025. Get ready.
I remember hearing this song on my 16th birthday. I was sat up in bed, having had a lie in, a little birthday treat for myself when "In the Year 2525" came on the radio. So apt was the fact that at very moment, I was reading the science fiction story, "The Machine Stops"!
It's like seeing both the future and the past at the same time. Unbelievable.
So true
yea
the movie is from the 1920s and the song from the 60s
Well said; a rather dated silent movie with its grim, sometimes frantic visuals combined with the pessimistic angst-ridden song are perfect.

I am glad I am 56, pity the teenagers today, nothing to look forward to only a world destroying itself, thanks for the last 100 years of progress, progress towards oblivion
NO WE have!
And whose fault is it that the world is crappy for teenagers? Their parents, grandparents, the baby boomers. Their fault
Same here
Mr. Beast says otherwise
Glad the full version of Metropolis was restored for this video to be made.
This has always been the creepiest song of all time for me. You have captured exactly what goes on in my head!
Props. Live long and prosper . . .
This was prophetic gospel. This is where we are at now in 2022.
Fritz Lang is a genius and this song is terrifying. Brillance on part of the songwriters and performers.

One of the all time greatest! A great shame they never released another hit like this.

My thoughts exactly
When I first heard this song in the 70’s it was science fiction.
Listening to it now... it’s scarey
We got literally nothing of that stuff tho
Metropolis (1920s) is one of the best science fiction films, after 100 years the foresight of a genius like Fritz Lang is clear.
yes! and queen bought it, for radio gaga!
