How to Mix ANY GENRE like a PRO DJ!

  • Mixing different genres of music together seamlessly in a mix or “Openformat” mixing, is almost a requirement for most DJ’s nowadays.
To have the flexibility to play any song to make an audience member happy and to do it in a mix for me is one of the truest forms of DJ’ing, because it tests your musical knowledge, mixing ability and crowd reading ability. If you can DJ for anyone, you can DJ for everybody.

    ► SCRIPT
Now, a lot of you guys may know me for my Red Bull 3style DJ Set.
In that set I mixed over 5 genre’s of music in a 15 minute mix, and in total, I played about 30 songs.
Learning how to mix different genre’s of music blew me away back in the day. Because I simply didn’t know that DJ’s could do that.
I thought DJ’s just play one genre, and that’s it. But that’s not the case in the real world, where clubs, bars and events may require you to play all sorts of music together.
And today I’m gonna teach you how to do just that.
For this tutorial, we’re going to focus on mixing 3 different genre’s of music. Specifically, EDM, Hip Hop and Rock. I chose these genre’s specifically because of how different they are from one another.
So no, we’re not gonna mix EDM, with trance to dubstep to trap to tech house, those genres are just way to similar
For now we’re simply going to focus on mixing genre’s of music that aren’t conventionally done.
So here are 3 guidelines to note about your songs that’ll help you with your mixing. But don’t worry it’s not required.
    Now, number 1,
    1. The songs should be in the same BPM range
    Number 2
    2. It’ll help if they’re keys are the same as well
    And number
    3. It is recommended to use DJ edited songs for their intros and outros that they provide
Now you may be wondering where and how do we mix these songs together?
Well the trick is to mix during the chorus or outro of the current song playing.
Since the songs we’re going to use to mix in are DJ edits, mixing them in shouldn’t be too difficult, since the intros are mostly simple drum beats.
So EQ’ing and blending them in should be pretty simple. All we have to do is mix in at the right time, and blend and adjust.
Now, it’s important to know basic song structure, but to make things short. Most commercial songs, have 32 beat choruses, and most DJ edits have 32 beat intros and outros,
so mixing in during the chorus or outro will be best.
Now let’s say you don’t have a DJ edit of the song you want to mix in, well you could mix in the non dj edited song with the outro of the current song playing which should be a DJ edit.
So we have the strong lead of the next song, blending in nicely with the blank outro of the previous song.
Now the question is, how do you mix songs that don’t have DJ edited intros and outros,
Well this is the part where you analyze the length of the chorus’s intro, and the number of beats the next has song has before a vocal break comes in.
So our current song has a 32 beat chorus, but our next song only has an 8 beat intro
So we must the next song at the last 8 beats of the current song
Keep in mind, that you have to be quite good in blending songs together. And using the echo effect can help you make this transition a lot smoother.

Thank you MASTER once again...and this kind of MIXING is actually not frequently used especially by the new ERA of djing except for those who are truly a DJ MASTERS, or except for those who have dive deep into mixing DJ..like you xD.. I think this kind of mixing will really help a lot especially if you have to use old song in your mix and also yep new songs as well..but mann this kind of mixing level is insane really really insane...not easy but yet ultimately rewarding in the end..thank you for sharing the real meaning of mixing song to us Master..really really awesome..of you..

It also depends on the types of events you do, like me for example, because I'm just starting out I do a lot of smaller raves, events, and I might even be doing a small convention here in Toronto in March, so I tend to play a lot of UK/Happy Hardcore and Drum N' Bass, so a lot of my mixes tend to be one genre.

Here is what I been wanting to know. How exactly do you blend slow rock, pop older music.Stuff I see called like romantica mix etc. It's where a slow song loop plays. At which many songs are over that one loop.Like say for example a Phil Collins loop and that plays low in the back. You can hear it, but a song goes over it.Or take a slow reggae loop over older pop love songs etc.

After playing a few years doing primarily hip-hop and EDM themed nights, I reluctantly accepted a gig playing at a Rock club.
I needed the steady work and figured it would hold me over until I could get back in my comfort zone. Though creatively mixing dance and hip-hop in with the rock jams, I transformed the venue into an open format staple of the nightlife in that city.
It challenged my abilities and ended up being my longest held residency to date and became one of the most rewarding experiences of my DJ career. Now almost every gig I play is influenced by the skills I picked up.
