- True Detective season 2, episode 5, "Other Lives" is reviewed. Velcoro (Farrell) has always been in Semyon's (Vaughn) pocket, and now we finally figure out why. Meanwhile, Woodrugh finds out who stole his money and how...is it justified? Is it in any way possible Semyon will survive this season and recover from his life? What about all the other characters?
Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies), Brett Erlich (Pop Trigger) and John Iadarola (The Young Turks) discuss! Кино
Brett Erlich has to go guys! Whoever watch this review has already decided and most likely WILL watch the rest of the series, so what is the point of hating on it with halfass reasons?
This guy says everything what my 9 years old daughter would, if I had her to watch the show as a punishment.
This episode was actually really good... still don't get the hate... it's pissing me off... sure it's not perfect and isn't better than season one and I think it'd do better if it had 3 main characters instead of 4... but still it is very entertaining and interesting and keeps me wanting the next episode
TheFlickinCritic Yeah, I see a lot of people in my feeds complaining about how boring this show is this go around, and I just don't get it. There's crazy amounts of depth to every character, and they're all drawn together beautifully.
Am I just missing the boat by really enjoying this, or is everyone being hyper-critical?
Keith Frank to be honest man I think it is getting more positive buzz than negative (not by a whole lot but still) it's just that these haters are raising there voices and trolling at every opportunity they get... like on imdb boards I have seen the same two people starting 10 different topics all having to do with their opinion on the show sucking... they'll say stuff like 5 episodes in and still nothing and I hate but yet they are still Watching it you know?
The first 4 episodes were convoluted.
Keith Frank the haters wanted a remake of season one. but that would have been pointless.
TheFlickinCritic The dialogue is often terrible, they spell things out all the time. The character's aren't all that complex they almost seem like cliches. There are 3 episodes left and I personally don's care much about these characters or what happens to them and probably won't think of them again once the show is done. The story so far is pretty unintelligible, rather than seeming mysterious it seems just confusing and convoluted. Nothing about this city or it's people seem real. The only reason anyone is watching this season is because the first one was good. It's level of broodiness is often laughable so many lines make me laugh out loud for being so bad. Anyway I'm glad you're enjoying it but you shouldn't feel pissed that other people don't really like it the way you do.
I re-watched the first 4 episodes and it really helped me understand everything. Especially if you put your phone down. The show is awesome, you just have to listen.
msj56 The first 2 eps overload you with information. Multiple watches is pretty much a must.
+msj56 no its very boring .- the first 3 episodes are very boring... episode 4 nice shooting scene and get better and episode 5 is also good but .. all in all boring..
"I want them to get together, which I usually don't care about at all" - LIES, Ben! You are the biggest shipper out there!
***** ben is the most annoying person on youtube.
John Idarola needs to be on every panel for every What The Flick review. He actually reviews it from a bigger picture point of view and makes a lot of interesting points.
Can't stand Brett. Hated in the walking dead reviews and now he watches this show ugh
You both watch the same show? Imagine that...
Me too. Why bring him back?
NandimFilho Brett = Jerry Sandusky
+smeefan Of course Walking Dead lovers hate Brett. That show deserves negative reviews from people willing to bite the bullet.
Props to actress Michael Hyatt (Brianna Barksdale) playing States Attorney Katherine Davis forming the special unit like Amanda Waller(Are you the devil) and Task Force X AKA The Suicide Squad. Promising Deadshot I mean Ray she'll help him get his son back. Much better episode!
You just blew my damn mind
marcwa74 I cant stand that actress, she is god awful. Ive seen her in this and Nightcrawler she plays literally the exact same character. Same voice, same clothing, same fucking job basically. She is so annoying.
quinn959 She's barely in either this or Nightcrawler. You're annoyed by her 30 seconds of screen time, really? I don't see how playing similar roles is god awful. She's a character actor and like most character actors you get type cast in similar roles. She's very convincing in both. And I think she could've played Amanda Waller in the upcoming Suicide Squad Movie. Even though I think Viola Davis is perfect casting.
There needs to be more cult weirdness.
James Rode Yeah, there needs to be more insight into this weird religous cult that's been looming all season long
James Rode i was surprised these guys didn't mention how cultish that town felt. More references to crows too.
James Rode Come on, they can't just keep having cults in this show season after season. I like the new themes like political and economic corruption this season.
Nikolai Quack I don't think that's really it's strength. They didn't wear out the cultish thing last season. There are so many things they could dig into; we saw the tip of the iceberg. It would have created a stronger mystery to center things around cult doings. (I do realise they have it occasionally, but they're neglecting it).
But really, the bigger issues with this season are writing and directing. (To some degree, it's acting as well, but how can they say any of this naturally!?)
James Rode Talkin about writing and acting you do realize that this is the show that gave us time is a flat circle, right?
D'Angelo Barksdale
Fuck. That brett guy again WHY!
I think the same thing. This guy is really awful.
best scene for me was Frank getting teary eyed over finally accepting his child insecurities that reflect his view on life.
I like it whenever they refer to past The Wire characters as such. Usually, it is diminutive, like referring to Kevin Sorbo eternally as Hercules, but for The Wire it is an acknowledgement of their amazing work on that show.
Why has WTF never reviewed Ray Donovan? It's a fucking incredible show, and Ben stated that he does watch it. It seems right up there as a WTF kinda show to review.
Its not a critical darling or Major Pop culture hit. Ray Donovans started off really messy and got a little more balanced and nuanced in season 2. Its not a groundbreaking show. Go watch shows like Sopranos, Terriers and Veronica Mars and you see significant difference in quality.
WithoutRemorse12 lol so shows like Hannibal, The Flash, Gotham, and Better Call Saul are ground breaking shows? I wasn't aware that WTF only reviewed "pop culture hits". Give your head a shake.
Rory Parent Hannibal is ground breaking for broadcast TV. Since its rare for anything there to attempt Cinema Verte style. The Flash is part of Pop Culture consensus. Better Call Sall is still finding its identity but had a pretty strong season 1. Gotham imploded and basically is Scholck now.
Rory Parent There are a lot of terrific series from the U.S. and all over the world that TYT/WTF haven't touched.I just binged the BBC "Johnny Worricker" trilogy from last year, a refined spy series that was a lot of fun, was well written, and a.) Bill Nighy is so fucking suave; and b.) a great line up of co-stars; including Rachel Weisz, Michael Gambon, Alice Krige, Judy Davis, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes and Winona Ryder. My theory is that either some of these series are too smart for any of the TYT reviewers to wrap their tiny little brains around (except maybe Ben), or that the TYT reviewers have determined that these series are too smart for TYT viewers. In reality, it's probably a combination of the two.Enjoy your "Scream" reviews.
Finally I've been waiting for this all day
bretts Ok its just that his 'character' gets in the way of his ability to assess a show accurately. the more critical the more funny but the less reliable he is.
Patrick Miller this show needs more seasons and I don't want to watch TD to get canceled at the expense of overly critical humorists
I think it's just as intriguing and interesting as the first season, despite the lack of past/present back and forth with unsolved mystery in between. The multiple characters are very convincingly broken in their own ways and the acting is amazing across the board.
19:38 *gasp* !
WAIT! What if *all HBO shows all take place in the same universe* ?! The Wire, Rome, Game of Thrones, True Detective, The Leftovers etc... ?
So like actually this is Westeros but centuries after the G.O.T era! The 'departure' in the Leftovers is actually the result of magic returning once again in the world. All the missing people are sacrifices for the Red God! Holy Wayne is a red priest! The Wire and True detective (both seasons) actually happen in the same time but in different places! D'Angelo Barksdale's mom and that prosecutor are twin sisters seperated since birth! Remember those visions Cole had in season one of T.D.? That was magic, that only meant Cole is a red priest too! *Everybody is a fucking red priest* !!!
Alright I'm done.
They set up the pieces, let us ponder how they fit together, bring them together and build to the conclusion.
That was a fuckin good episode
I lost all care for Brett's opinion on anything after he said that he hated The Newsroom.
Rory Parent Everybody at What the Flick hated The Newsroom except John.
Rory Parent I'm sorry, but what little I watched of The Newsroom was awful. Brett's in the right there, I don't know how people can stand that show.
Fangtorn It was so bad Cenk stopped reviewing it in season 3.
Rory Parent I loved the Newsroom but then I realized the show was bad.
Rory Parent But The Newsroom WAS terrible.
These guys are way better than the other combos they had for the other "What the Flick- True Detective Season 2" episodes. The chemistry and discussion in general is way more interesting.
I think people confuse this show for some sort of "based on actual case files" procedural type of show, but it isn't, at all. It's a throwback pulp-noir crime show, so the dialogue is intentionally stylized. That's all just a part of the shows flavor, and Nic Pizzolatto's voice as a writer coming through. It should be viewed in the same context as similarly pulp inspired works, like Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, True Romance and Pulp Fiction for example. This is writer Nic Pizzolatto's stylized world, and not meant to be taken as a stark reflection of our own. If he wants to write characters that use words like "apoplectic," that's his choice, and no different than Tarantino creating a world where all his characters smoke "Red Apple Cigarettes" and dress all in the same black suits with black skinny-ties.
am I the only one who Fast Forwarded when Dopie in the middle spoke?
13:33 - 13:50 _Hahahahaha!!!_ Ben took the words right out of my mouth.
I think the Ecig was a representation of her not being true to herself. Shes now trying to live with herself and address the after affects of the massacre with an honest understanding of herself. Which includes real smoke lol
The craziest thing about this season is that John hasn't seen the first one.
This episode was really good.
Nails = man in the Crow mask, working with Blake for Osip behind Frank's back
Was surprised that Ani didn't get more fallout from the shootout where so many innocents died. She's sent to the evidence room as a part of the sexual harassment complaint, but she gets a pass for not waiting for a tactical team. She knew that the killer used a shotgun to kill Casper. However she had everyone using just their standard handgun with only 1 officer carrying a shotgun. Ray finally finding out that Frank set him up was interesting. The faces Ray made while finding out from the state investigator was riveting. My theory of Frank having Ray's wife raped so Ray would come to him for help was only partially right so far. The showdown seems to happen next episode. I was hoping it wouldn't happen until the last episode. Perhaps they'll just talk/threaten next episode & have the violence in the finale. Paul's mom is the worst, I hope we don't see her again although I doubt we'll be that lucky. Please let the mayor Chessani die painfully & slowly.Really curious who the shotgun birdman is. Frank blowing off that mexican gangster & his muscle will come back to haunt him. The psychiatrist getting worked over after making the horrible choice of taunting Ray who was already visibly upset was amusing. I'm glad Paul got props from Ray after the shootout when he said Paul was a "god-warrior that day" to Ani. Ani will regret getting her sister involved in the sex scene. Especially if Ani arrests(least likely), hurts(most likely), or kills anyone going to/there/leaving from this party. The investigation 2.0 will be infinitely more effective considering it will be completely off the books. This however will also hurt anyone who survives in the end for any illegal/violent acts that they do.
The two things that stand out the most to me so far. First, Vince Vaughn finds out that his whole future depends entirely on detective work. At the same time his detective is just about to rebel in a big way. So that's going to be interesting to see the desperation. Secondly, I find the main case developments to be a little too coincidental, a little too lucky. Colin Farrell is told to tail Vince's henchman, and the henchman reveals instantly that he is tied in with the psychiatrist who knows everything about Casper AND the Mayor's son and the railway? What a fluke! Meanwhile Rachel McAdams, completely randomely and by pure coincidence, gets given a bunch of photos which are basically a detective's wet dream of evidence related to their case. How convenient! I tried to think of how this could be something beyond sloppy writing, i.e. if a coincidence is too suspicious maybe it's not a coincidence at all. But I couldn't really think of any conspiracy that could justify it all.
Dhiraj Pallin I really like your Vince Vaughn point, I hadn't thought about that.
And I agree with your second point. I think that it is a result of the time crunch of an 8 episode season. Luckily these case developments didn't completely clear everything up about the case, they just shed a little light onto who knows who and how deep it goes. I still think the true answer to the case will be uncovered with good old-fashioned detective work.
I think that you have to take into account that this happens over a period of two months, the police getting two strong leads in that time frame doesn't stretch it for me that much.
But we see them get the leads, so they didn't happen over that 2 month period.
Hmmm....good point all round
Not gonna lie, I had a pretty good chuckle over the Cisco Kid line
It was a great episode, except for the cheep torture scene (explaining the goal under a minute for the people tuning in).
Better call Saul has the best fresh take on torture in a tv-show
I think the "Cisco Kid" is the Birdman....I know it really makes no sence in the plot, kinda like the first time we met Errol Childress in season 1....
Fun review.
Only 3 episodes left and I STILL don't give a damn about any of these characters! WTF???
Ray's not so bad
John Doge
Not saying any of them are bad. Just that the show hasn't really made me invest in any of them. I'll watch til the end just to see what happens though.
That's exactly how I feel except the latest episode got slightly better in my opinion.
John Doge
It got slightly better but that makes me wonder "What the hell were they waiting for???" LOL
Jon Kline GO FUCK YOURSELF, SHITHEAD!!!! This season is LOUSY compared to the first one and everyone knows it.
The Yellow King. Carcosa.
chuy RM Robert W. Chambers. "The King in Yellow" collection. One of Lovecraft's influences. You should read it. "Along the shore the cloud waves break, The twin suns sink behind the lake, The shadows lengthen In Carcosa. Strange is the night where black stars rise, And strange moons circle through the skies, But stranger still is Lost Carcosa. Songs that the Hyades shall sing, Where flap the tatters of the King, Must die unheard in Dim Carcosa. Song of my soul, my voice is dead, Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed Shall dry and die in Lost Carcosa."
16:46 Reminds me of Ned Stark "getting back into" Westeros politics and gets beheaded. Interesting
Damn you Ben!!!!!!!! I'm watching The Wire now. I don't know how or when but I will have my revenge for this spoiler!
Brett is still talking? Why?
Why are people bashing Brett in the comment section? I think he is pretty funny. I'm not even sure what he said that pissed people off in this review. I think people are still butthurt because he use to call out the bad writing in Walking Dead.
I kinda chuckled in sexual harassment bit she came off really like being sarcastic or taking the piss. The Blue Balls in his heart was bit weird line but it felt to me something Vince Vaughn's character would say. Like he isnt some fancy high class educated and sophisticated guy. He a made man, become sophisticated from coming from the other side of the track and his own grit. So he isnt as articulate or classically educated. I fought his point about class was also demonstrated he political aware. I find his character really interesting-- finding all the characters really interested and more interested in following them then say the plot.
Good episode, way better panel
The Mayors son is the killer, and Frank's wife is involved in the plot that screwed up Frank (there were two stains!).
Damn guys, I finally started watching The Wire...
I watched the episode.
lol.. every time I see her I think of dangelo barksdale.
Birst!! Fitches!!!!!
this panel is hilarious
Am I the only person who prefers this season to season 1 ?
George Davies Yes
George Davies yes you are !
George Davies Season 1 was more weird.
Let's wait till 2 it's over
George Davies I do like this season better. you can tell the director is a writer before anything else. it's written just like a book, intricately connected, putting pieces together. while season 1 was a easy riding journey with philosophical elements in it only if you wanted to take it that way. other then that Rust was the best acting
They should make a rule that the reviewers are fans of the show
Please stop using The Wire references for characters on another show. We get the Wire great but I wanted see a review of True Detective.
This season has gone full on hard boiled pulp.
I'm loving it. A lot of set up in this but I think it will come through
on the story.
Lot of Brett hate in the comments. That's a shame, I quite like him. I disagree with his thoughts on the show but I find him an amusing addition to these reviews.
Jon Kline We can't all be naturals Jon.
Fangtorn Brett is a bitch.
HBO cop shows can't be artistic? True Detective was never REALLY a cop show anyways. The case was always just the setting for Pizzolatto's vision. Ben seems to be saying that any visual artistry on TV is pretentious. Is Hannibal pretentious because it isn't just another police procedural? Nonsense.
True that
Derek Diercksmeier It's pretentious because of the way it's shot, and how serious it takes itself. If you don't see it it might be because you got your head up your artistic ass.
John..seriously...stop rewatching that GoT stuff and watch the first season of True Detective, it may be the single best season of television ever made. Really, you owe it to yourself, but wait until the end of the second one, so you wont compare it unfairly. Although I'm liking this one alright too
John really needs to get his ass in gear and watch first season.
The Russian and Mayor's Son are working together to black mail people and Catalyst are the top but they are working against the Mayor's Son, Russian because Catalyst want to get the hard drive.
lol ya'll do realize this was the best episode of this season right? Hate only when hate is due but not for this ep.
Other critical reaction to episode 5 has not been positive.
The critic on Mashable eviscerated True Detective.
Not good after 5 hours a viewer still doesn't really know what's going on.
Second season is pretentious? Have you seen the first one?
I just don't like Brett. There...I said it.
***** ok and others my agree, others wont and end of the day he likely dont give a shit
Henbot And? Your point?
***** Brett is a bitch.
Henbot is not giving a shit to feedback supposed to be professional?
This season feels so derivative and even more pretentious than the last.
Vince Vaughn's storyline blows.
Very disappointed with this second series of True Detectives. So dull I play solitaire, during it.
they shoud make a mute brett button
Yeah, Brett is obtoxic and has nothing to add to any critical discussion. But so is John.
Bandwidth wasters - and for no reason.
WHAT IS THIS OBSESSION WITH SPOILING THE WIRE ON WHAT THE FLICK. ITS REALLY DAMN ANNOYING
I still think you guys are clowns for abandoning The Brink after 2 episodes.
Also, calling that Cholo gangster 'Cisco Kid' wasn't funny? I understand your media jobs mean you're incapable of insulting people, but that shit was funny.
It's definitely not as good as season one and doesn't deserve to share the name....but as a stand alone show , it's not as bad as they said it was .
Fast forwarding through Brett Ehrlich's bits again. This guy is beyond irritating.
Is this a review of a TV show or a contest of who can be the funniest - awful, the guy in the middle is just plain annoying
Aha, John is an SJW
And you're a cretin. People who use the word SJW invariably are.
