  • True Detective season 2, episode 7, "Black Maps and Motel Rooms" is reviewed. In the aftermath of the cop out sex party debacle of episode 6, Ani, Paul and Ray congregate at a motel room to sort through the documents that they have stolen. Will they find any leads? Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies), Michelle Boley and Alonso Duralde (TheWrap, Linoleum Knife) discuss!

      David Snipes It was a pretty disappointing discussion. Sure, the plot is complicated and hard to follow. But I sort of like the fact that they aren't treating us like fools and spelling it all out for us.
      I was hoping they would spend more time talking about Paul's final scenes, because I thought it was handled very well. It was a very tense moment, the soundtrack stood out to me all leading up to his death.
      They also seem to think that Burris is a mastermind behind all of this, when I think he is just another cog in the machine.

    • @FlowerChild65
      @FlowerChild65 9 лет назад +4

      David Snipes Agreed. Basically their reasoning seems to be, "We didn't pay attention so this is a bad show." Nothing about it was confusing. Everything got laid out in this episode basically. Also, the sex between Ani and Ray was the perfect moment, because it was both of them coming together as broken people who are very much the same.

      FlowerChild65 I know they are strapped to get people in to talk about stuff at times, but listening to the chick who directed one shitty TV movie hate on the writing on a show she's not qualified to watch is mind-boggling.

    How in the fuck are these people still not able to recall the names of the minor characters? And how is it relevant? I remember Ben bitching about not able to recall the namen of crucial minor characters (Marie Fontenot, Ledoux, Gilbough, Papania, etc) from Season 1 and it wasn't considered negative part of the show.

    So last week they were all praising episode 6 saying it was finally getting exciting, the plot was better and all... and now that we get an even more exciting episode, with great action, old mysteries being solved, character's arc coming full circle, some real emotion (which I thought was lacking so far) they're back to nitpicking everything and complaining. It's like they completely change their mindset from review to review.
    But what's worse is that they're starting to mock the season, by highlighting their unability to understand some things. Which is extremely annoying since I take the show seriously and understand all the things they complain about.

      Chara Miwa Yeah, changing their mind from review to review is unfortunately quite a common thing on What the Flick. They do it with Game of Thrones, Masters of Sex, and probably other shows too. One week they love it, the next they hate it. Their opinions of an episode of a show, a season of a show, or a show as a whole are pretty inconsistent.

      Chara Miwa Makes perfect sense to me. True Detective Season 2 carries a constant love/hate vibe. The story is great until you start picking it apart asking questions about who's who and what's going on. Too many loose threads, red herrings that can't possibly be resolved in a 90-min episode. We shall see.

    • @JozieLeePro

      Franklin Zunge For me, the critics didn't sway my thinking. Episodes 1-3 are confusing. If the season had been delivered whole, like they do on Netflix - Marathon style. Presto! Lag time hurt the story's continuity. I have a good memory, but this show isn't so entertaining that it deserves multiple viewing. You're right . . . Pizzalato could have used better direction and editing. If he'd given us more backstory for Paul, Ani, Ray, Frank and fewer organized criminals/cops we probably wouldn't be having this discussion. Hopefully, Pizzalato has learned from this season and we get a tighter Season 3.

    There are plenty of people who dislike this show for valid reasons. It isn't their thing. Fine. But most of the haters, just don't understand the plot. It's time to be honest and admit that. It's a complicated plot, with a LOT of moving threads, but if you pay careful attention instead of making fun of it, you begin to see how everything fits together and how well constructed the plot was from the beginning. At times it was clunky, and should have been slightly simplified, but everything makes sense, and if you make a little effort, you'll see that. It's not that hard, time to stop expecting shows to spoon-feed you the info. When you are a detective like 3 of the main characters, nobody is spoon-feeding you shit, helping you keep track of who is who. You just figure it out.

    • @babayaro96

      Mark Hogan i don't think this plot is more complicated than season 1, and i understood season 1, this is just shitty storytelling, why do i have to re watch the whole of last weeks episode and search wiki for every minor character i see, just who the fuck has the time to do that, the info dumps and pacing is appalling and sometimes i just give up and say "fuck it they know what they are doing anyway" so many good points like the guys who met in the hippie camp when the were kids, the diamonds, black-water/woodraugh's past that were so poorly executed. i am not a detective i haven't been trained as one and so is the majority of the viewers so yeah we do need to be spoon feed, what detective shows are supposed to do is spoon feed us in a way we don't feel like we've been spoon feed and we understand all the steps like the wire and season 1 of true detective . i don't have a panel like w.t.f to dissect this shit with, so if they are gonna do this shit they might as well release it all at once on some Netflix shit.

      Mark Hogan No this season has just been horrible. Taylor Kitsch's entire story from start to finish was god awful. The way that all these detectives are connected to this conspiracy, is preposterous. I didn't watch season one, but this season has been indefensible. I mean Kitsch's death was 100% bullshit. First he takes out a team of trained killers, with a horribly directing action sequence. Then like Ben said, there must 1,000 ways out of there & that guy is just waited at the right door. What if Kitsch left out another exit. What would that guy just wait there for an hour & go "well guess he isn't coming this way".

    • @JozieLeePro

      JozieLeePro First of all he would've had to have been aware of the meeting taking place beforehand. And Kitsch just chose a random exit, that happened to be near where was, at that moment. It's preposterous that this guy could've chosen the right door to hide behind. Kitsch could've gone out the original way he came in. Then what is the killer supposed to do.

      Zemeda Zonne yep and since they are dirty cops - of course they do that.
      Maybe this is one of the TYT things, they are in general to naive - maybe willingly - to be at least a little patriotic. You see this on the main show also a lot, when they go for the major consensus narrative and I can only ask then - really? They seem to produce in general too many shows and videos. Well, it is part of their business model to create an enormous amount of clicks. Many of these videos are garbage. It is so sad, that they do not give "True detectives" a fair chance, because I tried to find other review. There are not many out there, no real competition unfortunately.

      TheHolyMackarel that's strange, from everyone i know, they agree with what the flick. and the reviews have pretty much been on par with what they're saying that it makes no sense and is convoluted. like ben said "no one likes this show". i'd be curious where you saw this show is "universally loved" even the trades have given it really lackluster reviews

    • @Ndoelicious
      @Ndoelicious 9 лет назад

      TheHolyMackarel I'm talking about the entire series, it is written on my comments. Yes, the series is getting better, that's also what I meant earlier by saying why it's still a good series despite of the flaws. I don't have to write a desertation to show what I meant in one comment now was I?
      WTF also adressed that matter, of what the show is trying in terms of storyline(not named Ben -if you've seen enough of the show, that's just how Ben is). Most people didn't keep up with the show due to the confusing narrative and direction by the director, not the story itself. But there's always people who always said "you're so stupid, it's so easy to understand", "dumb IGN so stupid, Ori is pretty easy on control" on internet just to be taken as a smart guy.

    Please if you are going to review something at least commit the effort to understand it. This is an eight hour movie trying to capture the feel of a 1940s TRUE DETECTIVE magazine serial. During the first half some mystery causes an investigation which exposes many different confusing leads. A false climax midway shortcuts the investigation leaving all the clues hanging. The resolution is favored by the bosses for whatever reason, but the True Detective cannot let go. During the second half witnesses and mere shadows are forced into expositions. But the answer remains obscured until a final eureka moment, the green paint in season one, pulls it all together with more exposition followed by a high action finish and usually bad aftermath. Bitching about exposition and confusion is like complaining about fantasy in a fantasy book, like you do on Game of Thrones.

      krichardj I agree. I don't think people understand quite yet that this show is a new hybrid form of narrative where there is still three acts, but in 8 hours. It's like they expect this to be an 8 hour Die Hard movie or something. What? there isn't supposed to be mystery that keeps you thinking in a Film noir mystery show? Maybe it's not the BEST thing I have ever seen in my life, but it's great and very difficult to keep an audience compelled for a season(Notice how even the haters can't get enough). People are far too impatient these days and want immediate results and instant gratification. Go jerk off if you want that. I for one enjoy Pizzolatto's story telling and the stylistic way it unravels. Quote of the ep goes to Velcoro: 'Dixon is just a plain dick.'

    I think Vince Vaughn's wife is what will tie everything together, that scene where he brings her in to see Blake dead gave me a weird feeling. The look he gave her was almost like Vince knew she was screwing him over too. Also I think she has osips baby because Vince said something about her period being gone for like 3 months or something when he was talking to osip. And finally did anyone notice her boobs were huge in this episode?? I think it's a real clue that she's pregnant lol

Modern day criticism has come down to who can find the most to complain about something the most. Honestly the slightest modicum of focus would answer every question one would have about this show.

    My elevator pitch for Season 1 would be "a dark, existential buddy cop drama". For season two I am going for "a cold war where nobody quite knows who their friends are and then shit hits the fan".
    I personally have found this season quite compelling but for me it has required me to come at it in more the way I would a video game than a Television Series. There are so many details that are really odd when you think about them and it seems lots of clues you can really enjoy going to town trying to figure out things before the detectives.
    To channel something Rust might say, you have to start asking the right questions.
    Some of the important ones are.
    * Is the person/people who move the body the same person/people who killed Caspere?
    * Why move the body from Hollywood to Ventura County?
    * Why destroy the eyes and the penis?
    * Why take the limo from the movie studio?
    * Why take the animal mask?
    * Why attack Ray but let him live? It should have been easy to either kill or avoid Ray.
    * Why move the limo back to where it ended up, but then come back and torch it?
    * Who has the hard drive now? (This question depends on who you think was the Birdman in episode 2).
    * Who spilled the beans on Davis's under the radar investigation?

    I personally had no problem remembering or keeping track of any of the reveals or characters this ep, or all season. Also, love the GoT recaps, but you have to realize that generally, WtFl recaps are kinda famous for having reviewers who don't remember the names of characters in shows or small details. And that AV Club review is terrible.

    Anyone who thinks this plot was well worked out... I get where you're coming from.
    I liked Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and everyone else was baffled by it.
    But that movie actually gave each relevant character significant screen time and backstory, you just had to connect the dots, because the movie didn't connect them for you.
    Here, the show connects all the dots, but doesn't give important characters backstory or screen time. Every major plot point has been revealed through exposition rather than framing.
    It's not impressive you managed to follow the plot, there wasn't anything to connect until they connected it for us. That doesn't make good tv. I still enjoyed certain parts of the show though, but I criticize a bunch too.

  • @jaRadnitch
    @jaRadnitch 9 лет назад +1

    I honestly think this show suffers from poor writing more than anything. I said it at the end of season 1 and I'll say it again now: Nic Pizzolato isn't good enough to run the show on his own. The show suffers from being extremely monotonous and boring, because there's only a single writer on it, and he only knows how to write dark, (overly) damaged characters. There needs to be some contrast to make the show less boring and depressing to watch. They nailed it in season 1. The somewhat pretentious writing made sense back then due to Rust Cole's character being a bit of a weirdo. This season it seems like Nic attempted to force even more pretentious, cringe-worthy dialogue out of characters where it makes no sense for them to talk that way. It's just dumb.

    What the Flick's?! reviews have been the best thing about watching True Detective this season...I seriously hope you guys find a few new shows to review now though. There aren't a lot of TV series' that you're reviewing at the moment, particularly shows that include people like Ben or Robert Abele as part of the review group.
    If we could have them instead of Brett in the reviews, that would be MUCH APPRECIATED. Brett is totally fine on Pop Trigger, but on this channel the way he stops the entire review in its tracks to constantly make asinine, unimportant points for the sake of a comedic "bit", (a bit which also happens to take forever and is spoken as slowly and unhumourously as possible), and it is really wearing on my nerves, (and seemingly other's nerves too, judging by comments on videos with Brett).
    What the Flick?! is one of my very favourite channels, but lately the only thing that has been tarnishing it has been the lack of quality reviewers like Ben Mankiewicz and Robert Abele, and then the filling of their spots with Brett Erlich. The difference in the quality of insight, intelligence, entertainment value, and presence is of such a drastic dichotomy between Ben and Robert and then Brett, that it can be pretty hard to swallow. I'd rather see just Bibbs and Alonso rather than add Brett in, even though having a third person always makes the review better.
    PLEASE - hear my plea - *MORE BEN & ROBERT - LESS BRETT!*

    I've been harsh on this season so far...but I actually liked this episode. This was the first one that I can say has been "very good." The plot, yeah, it's still convoluted as hell, but at least I can see what they were *trying* to do here. Has it been successful? Marginally. Verdict's still (a little) out, though. Vince Vaughn in this episode, though? Loved him. FINALLY.

  • @TheCrazyFreak
    @TheCrazyFreak 9 лет назад

    I don't understand how you can like that Paul "didn't get his moment". Because his death left me feeling so frustrated and unsatisfied - partly because of the way he died (he was literally SO close to escaping; he already beat all of those guys that surrounded him, was already out the door and then BAM that asshole Burris appears out of nowhere) and partly because he didn't really resolve /any/ of his issues. Also, his life was basically just suckage after suckage and when he finally gets the chance to start dealing with all his repressed stuff (and may eventually find happiness), he isn't even given the opportunity to take that chance, because he gets killed. I can't be the only one who finds that incredibly unsatisfying to watch.
    Other than that, I've actually been enjoying this season a lot and don't know what all the complaints are about. I've been able to follow the plot really well, you just have to pay a bit more attention and you'll know what's going on. The one I'm currently rooting for the most is Frank - I loved him this episode and I hope he manages to screw Osip and his guys completely and gets away with it.

      Enrique Godinez I know, but I like to watch TV to "escape" from real life. I mean, I've watched shows where justice doesn't get served and all that and while they certainly are more realistic, I found myself enjoying them less in the end. It's probably just a personal preference.

    The thing I love about the writing (of both seasons) is that nothing gets pointlessly explained. To be honest I watched the first season three times and have problems to understand everything... same with this season. I don't get a lot of things concerning the case (it's probably also because I'm german and don't understand everything because I watch it in english). But that doesn't matter to me. I loved the first season because it was beautifully philosophical and the second one because (mostly because of this episode) for the emotional impact it has on me. These stories are about the characters and that's it, i think. This is a straight up drama with a little bit of a crime story. Not the other way around. Stop excepting to get everything explained all the time. This isn't CSI or Criminal Minds.

    Holy shit what an episode..I thought Paul was going to make it for a second, fucking Birdman! Also loved the use of the music from the finale in S1 that they used tonight at the end. They really could have used Paul for the finale fight though,...god dam I'm pissed! His character was so doomed from the start I felt, and so tragic. I was really pulling for him but as soon as the audience and him found out he had a baby on the way, with this type of show, I knew he was doomed.
    On a side note, I think Frank redeemed himself towards any doubters previous to this episode. Frank was BADASS this episode and I'm actually rooting for him to pull through, but last time I rooted for Paul, well we saw how that played out..Don't get me started on Jordan because I don't trust her for one minute.

    when and IF you can finally figure out what is going on, the story is quite good. After every episode I google and read every recap online to make sure I have the story straight. The story is great and complex, but the writing and execution of it are poor. Love the twists, but sometimes they are so obscurely presented it is easy to miss them. Or rush by so quickly and out of the blue it is hard to process them. I record the show, my husband and I watch it together, and we are always pausing it to confer to make sure we got it straight.

How did you not realize the whole scene with Ani's father in the woods was to hint that it could have possibly been him that molested her!? I thought she was going to gut him right there when she was staring him down and he was like, 'I thought you said you didn't remember anything?'. Even if it wasn't him, they made strong indications it could have been with a younger version of what looked like Ani's father luring her into the van.

    hmm for reviewers they should have a lot more humility about how unaware they are about the plot/characters. "who is burris/who is holloway?" is just an unacceptable question at this point; the show is sort of assuming you can handle following a semi adult timeline, they have to take some responsibility for their lack of understanding. it does require a bit of thinking about, its true, but at this point they just seem lazy. "near as i can tell, no one likes this show right now" seems like a sort of arrogant way to make one feel better about Themself not liking the show. it was like when they stopped reviewing brink because ben can't handle immature humor and there was a bit of puke in one episode, but instead of admitting that about himself he blames the show entirely. "this is a bad show...its no good" if you want to hate the show (due to lack of understanding most likely...) then thats fine, but to claim the show is at fault and no one likes it is just a really cowardly argument imo.
