  • True Detective, season 2, episode 4 is reviewed. Frank starts to rebuild his empire, working his way back into the ownership of clubs and properties that he once owned, and negotiating deals with the city's drug suppliers in a bid to reclaim his lost money. Ani and Velcoro follow Caspere's movements, tracking him to vast tracts of land contaminated by the heavy metals dumped in the tailings from decades of mining. A visit to the commune run by Ani's father reveals that Chessani and Caspere has been in business for decades, prompting Velcoro to admit that the State investigation into Vinci is little more than a shakedown. Political forces-implied to be Chessani's influence-see Ani suspended from her job after a co-worker files a sexual harassment complaint against her. Woodrugh awakens from his investigation into the prostitutes to find that he has slept with another man. Refusing to address the issue, Woodrugh leaves where he is accosted by reporters asking questions about his time with a private military contractor in Iraq. Throwing himself back into the investigation, he follows up on a lead at a pawn shop where he uncovers a prostitute selling a watch owned by Caspere. Velcoro approaches Frank with this, which Frank dismisses as unlikely. Under pressure from Vinci PD to close the case, Velcoro, Ani and Woodrugh lead a raid against the prostitute and her pimp, but are ambushed when the building is found to be a methamphetamine lab. As the pimp tries to escape, he crashes his SUV into a city bus during a demonstration against the rail project. He and his accomplices open fire on the crowd as the police move in, and while the gunmen are killed, Velcoro, Ani and Woodrugh are left horrified at the mass civilian casualties.
    Alonso Duralde (TheWrap, Linoleum Knife, Brett Erlich (Pop Trigger), Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick?!), and Michelle Boley discuss.

      rhn94 Who are you referring to? Brett is no Johnathan Swift and this review is no "A Modest Proposal". I don't see how finding Brett's brand of "irony" annoying is in any way comparable. There's a track record of his analyses of any given work being frivolous. Unless you are being ironic yourself, or I've misapprehended the intended target? I deleted my original comment even before I saw this; I felt it was impulsive & mean-spirited, and I have no wish to tear the man down. However, the notion that criticizing Brett proves one daft - or is any way akin to disparaging a venerated satirist like Swift - borders on non-sequitur.

    I found the conversation they discuss in the beginning fairly straightforward. Paraphrasing:

    [All of this groveling and bargaining makes you look weak.]
    "It's the only way I can keep down your coffee."
    [This is the face I put on to deal with your bull shit.]
    "I haven't lost a tooth. Not a single cavity."
    [If you see this as a chance to walk all over me I will FUCK YOU UP.]

      ***** Yes, true, but scenes of endless bayou and pipelines made Louisiana an essential character in Season 1. The geography of the place, and the local Bible Belt Christianity and Voodoo influences tied the plot to the setting and the peculiar crime. Isolation created tension and foreboding. Showing freeways, farms, and the L.A. industrial district does not make this story feel essentially "Californian" - even with the Chinatown plot. It could be transplanted anywhere with no loss, making the overhead shots superfluous.

    • @WintersNstuff
      @WintersNstuff 9 лет назад +5

      Harvey Cotton I disagree, I think the twisting highways are supposed to represent the corrupt nature of the world these characters live in. The city of Vinci is wholly corrupt, and the highway flyovers go to show how twisted the city is and how every person there has an ulterior motive.

      theslyngl Ill end with this, one could assume a lot from your response I was not trying to be condescending nor argumentative. I was just wondering why the hate. I enjoy a panel where everyone contributes in a meaningful and diverse way. I agree with everyone that his delivery can be heavy on the cheese but not enough for people to down vote a video, that's being obnoxious. I respect your opinion but lay off the caffeine or cocaine and take some anger management classes. There I go assuming again... ;)And Ps.. peachpetals If they didn't want it to be compared then it should be a separate show instead of just calling it season 2, we are used to shows like game of thrones where you can expect the same level of quality and story every season, this is just weird to change the entire show between seasons.

      RelapseGalore55 I don't know, I feel like season 1 set the bar. And this season doesn't reach it, in fact, besides the main characters having shitty lives, I don't see much of a common theme between these 2 seasons. They could've called this season an entirely different title and no one would bat an eye.

    • @AhmedGhazwan
      @AhmedGhazwan 9 лет назад +2

      RelapseGalore55 I understand the argument of not comparing this season to season one, but it's really hard.
      And I'm not just talking in terms of story as whole, but also the characters and even director. which I find lacking in this season.
      Sure, I might be wrong in the end, and everything turns out great. But we're now half way through the end of the story and nothing has impacted me, or made me interested.

    • @darmodak1773
      @darmodak1773 9 лет назад

      RelapseGalore55 This season makes no sense. I thought it was just me who wasn't understanding the plot but it seems like everyone else experienced the same. This shows how terrible the writing is. Nic is a one hit wonder, it was obvious from season 1. Now he's just trying to copy the concept that he stumbled upon and failing miserably.

      RelapseGalore55 Tbh, True Detective fans will like anything that sounds remotely dark and edgy. Just look at the comment sections of Rust's monologues. They're infatuated with being emotionally damaged, faulty philosophy and that's basically the only requirements for "good tv".
      Unfortunately this season doesn't even do that very well.
      Having said that, I know taste is subjective however shows are held to a standard which I think this season doesn't meet.

  • @nieval8917
    @nieval8917 9 лет назад +10

    The sweet metaphor that they mention flew over their heads, the Turk said it to imply that Vince Vaughn is getting too greedy in his demands and that all that "sweetness" will come back to bite him in the ass, hence, too much sweetness will lead to him loosing his teeth (which, by the way, in dream interpretations usually signifies the person's pending death). All this makes his reply that much more badass: 'I've never lost a tooth; never even had a f@cking cavity'.

      Frank AndTheLoneStandingTuft It's true that it is very over the top in that sense but I mean , what were you expecting ? it's true detective that's what we signed up for. The first season was like that too.

    • @frankandthelonestandingtuf2379
      @frankandthelonestandingtuf2379 9 лет назад +1

      théo blanchette I think its because Woody Harrelson's character seemed to be the comedic relief to juxtapose Matthew Mcconaughey's brooding disposition. The fact that the amount of main characters has doubled with hardly any humour to them is damaging to some viewers (apparently).
      As for the setting- i live in a small town in the uk so southern L.A. seems wondrous and strange much like Louisiana from the 1st season, but this is entirely subjective.

    • @theoblanchette1176
      @theoblanchette1176 9 лет назад

      Frank AndTheLoneStandingTuft Yeah I agree that it must be the reason. Yeah me too I have that feel that L.A. is a little bit strange like louisiana (im from a little city in the eastern part of Canada so yeah both seems quite odd , weird and fascinating to me)
      But the lack of humor doesn't bother me as much. Mostly because Ray is fucking hilarious to me . And the other side character are funny too . That weird doctor that was like friend with caspere and who were sun glasses was so weird and shady that it was funny to me.

    • @frankandthelonestandingtuf2379
      @frankandthelonestandingtuf2379 9 лет назад

      théo blanchette There are plenty of funny moments. In such a serious and dangerous world (the crime world) i feel humour is obviously lacking. These characters are so jaded and damaged it would be inconsistent to seem them burst out in jokes in scenes. At the end of the day i understand peoples complaints about the show, and i'm sad Ben doesn't like it now as much as he did but i think it'll pick up again with some good quality stuff after that horrifying shootout.

    I do not agree with the analysis they pose in this conversation. I find the implication that the script needs comedic relief takes away from the theme of the script. I have to pretty much agree with those here about this Brett dude.
    I don't enjoy criticizing critics, but when someone puts you off, they putt you off.
    I can totally deal with someone not liking the show (I'm more so indifferent to this season than anything), I mean, I'm a grown man that cares way more about what he likes than what others like. However, when you watch someone almost enjoy belittling something, it makes you want to enjoy that something more, just so you don't have to be on their side of the fence.
    It's like those people who fake laugh when they hear your opinion on something. He's just pounding this show in he ground with this high-pedestal perspective. Like a dainty flick of the wrists and a "meheheh take it away, myehh".
    Seeing someone annoyed by a show/movie that they wanted to enjoy means they're honest, and disappointed. That's what I want to see. I don't want to see someone almost rejoicing in their distaste.
    I'm sure he's a good dude. I'm simply criticizing the way he criticizes. These reviews can also be seen as entertainment. I watch it just the same. So any judgments on character should have merit. It does not get a free pass to criticism. If you're a reviewer, you're reviewing can and should be under the spotlight. You are not entitled to a scrutiny shield.

    Season 1 was a gazillion times more engaging, thrilling, suspenseful... more relatable drama. Better editing, better direction, and everything felt more thought out and measured. Season 2 I just watch passively and really have no idea what is happening and really don't sympathize with any of the characters yet.. although strangely enough I enjoy it enough to keep watching it.

    I also think the show has a problem with tone.
    They seem to be aiming for dark and sulky and they succeed but it doesn't really make for a good show in this case. I actually think they could've gone for more of a Fargo-tone, with a touch of super dark humor.

    Yeah. Four episodes in, season half over and, well...this just isn't working for me. The gun fight looked like B-roll from an 'Expendables' movie with creepy music piped in. The rest of the episode was so dull that at one point I realized that I had been reading my e-mail for 10 minutes. Still...I'm going to ride this out, but...I'm already looking forward to Season 3, if that actually happens. I have no idea how the ratings are doing, but I'd be willing to bet they are plummeting ever since the season premiere.

    So, we are half way into this season of True Detective, and therefore I have given this season more than enough time to develop characters and stories. Hence, I don't feel that I am prematurely judging this season harshly. I am very disappointed! The first season, I was so captivated by the tension between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, as well as all the supporting cast, and this interest was kindled almost immediately. The murder mystery was also very suspenseful in that season. I did not have to wait for four episodes. I was hooked by episode one. In this season of True Detective, I am bored out of my mind. I don't care about any of the characters, and I don't find the murder mystery all that compelling. It is pretty sad that the only thing keeping watching the series is to get a glimpse of Rachel McAdams firm and shapely ass in some tight jeans! I swear if she was not in this season, I would have quit watching the show by now. This fourth episode was called "Down Will Come". Maybe that title is apropos, because it is inadvertently describing the trajectory of the quality of this series.

    Did no-one else noticed that the lyrics from the theme song changes every week (ironically this week was equal to episode 1)? It seems like a poetic description for what Frank is going through that episode...?
    So here's my take on Ray's kid (in case you're interested). Jordan IS the mother of Ray's child. She hesitates when Frank brings up her pregnancy and she hides former boyfriends... This would also explain why Ray's ex would bring $10.000 for him to not take the custody to court, because he's the only biological parent of the kid in that relationship, so she would stand no chance of winning in court. The picture Frank gives Ray "as a favor" to take revenge on the rapist of his wife, most definitely was a crook in Frank's way, but NOT the rapist. Ray's kills the guy, but Jordan is scared, leaves Ray and finds comfort and safety with Frank.
    If this is true, it will be super interesting when Frank finds this out and goes house on Ray - but my scorecard on theories is quite poor so...
    BTW - Louche is a valid word in The Netherlands; it means you're untrustworthy.

    I'm actually thinking of quitting WTF reviews, not because of the content at all, but because of all the absolutely vile misogyny in the comments whenever there's a female critic. Are your worldviews so fragile that you need to call a woman every name under the sun or accuse her of having "sucked dick" to get a spot on the panel if she has an opinion you don't agree with? It's an opinion, same as all the others. She's a critic and can speak her mind. Why all the hate brothers? What is making you so angry? It's disgusting, disturbing and really sad.

    • @bouncyshak
      @bouncyshak 9 лет назад

      Mark IV Funny you call ME a whinybaby when I cited a specific incident of misogyny and your response was to fire off a lengthy rant about how tough it is on you to criticise women nowadays and how "everybody gets so offended" etc. Here's a tip - instead of asking me who I help if I quit, why not ask yourself - who are you helping by being nasty? Why do we just shrug and say "oh well it's the internet"? Why not strive to do better and not alienate half the world with a hostile comment? Constructive criticism is not a problem for women - "she must have sucked dick to get a spot on the panel" is.
      The fact that you limit her critique to that of "some feminist who talks BS" and also accused men who agreed with her of being "manginas" on my other comment speaks volumes. I don't expect to be badgered for my views any more than someone should expect to be called a whore or less of a man for mentioning the portrayal of women in a TV show. If you can't see where responses like yours are adding to the problem then it really is worrying.
      Looking at female portrayals is a valid thing that many PEOPLE do when watching shows. To automatically hate on someone for doing that is plainly sexist and not cool. I'm sick and tired of having to navigate puerile and gross comments about women by keyboard warriors all the time when it's supposed to be entertainment. I'd rather go somewhere less hostile for reviews if it doesn't let up on this channel. That doesn't make me a whiny baby, but someone who would prefer to have conversations with rational and less antagonistic people.

    • @markiv2942
      @markiv2942 9 лет назад

      I wasn't really meaning you as whinybaby. I meant those who see misogyny everywhere and can't take any criticism or whose whole point is to criticize tv show being example "misogynist" based into some total ridiculous argument.
      "Looking at female portrayals is a valid thing that many PEOPLE do when watching shows. To automatically hate on someone for doing that is plainly sexist and not cool. "
      Too bad. It's not valid thing in my book.
      Well, those "many people" are those whiny babies I was referring to.
      Some people are so freaking obsessed with female portrayals and gender roles and what ever f Bs they find from tv series, movies, video games etc.
      It has become a sickness.
      just endless stream of whining from either feminists or manginas supporting them in order to gain access to those feminists.
      "I'm sick and tired of having to navigate puerile and gross comments about women by keyboard warriors all the time when it's supposed to be entertainment."
      Same here!
      Except it's the feministic BS of twitter/tumblr SJWs doing it about FICTION and entertainment.
      And yes, this is the Internet. Everybody have something to say, even trolls.
      ""Why not strive to do better and not alienate half the world with a hostile comment?"
      If whole point of woman/feminists who comments the entertainment in question is about gender roles, then she/he can FO, I don't care.
      "Constructive criticism is not a problem for women - "she must have sucked dick to get a spot on the panel" is."
      That is BS.
      There's no constructive criticism when it comes to feminists and quite often those who babble about gender roles in fiction (whose opinion quite often is contradicting: "I want badass strong sexual female lead who isn't stereotypical" - "Oh, I hate violence done to women and why this woman have problems and shows cleavage for male objectification, she's better than that!).
      When you say something to them you either agree with them, stay silent or get called that you are somehow supporting poor portrayal of women.
      Then after you react, just in negative way to that BS, you end up being "Misogynist" lumped together all the possible trolls out there who actually say the vile stuff.
      "If you can't see where responses like yours are adding to the problem then it really is worrying."
      Yeah, either agree with you (like I said above) or then you use words like "troubling", "concerned", "worrying" how to show that I have some kind of problem with women or I'm "uncool".
      No, your position isn't superior in any way.
      "someone who would prefer to have conversations with rational and less antagonistic people."
      Then concentrate into those people. I usually jump over both the trolls and whinybabies. You do know that they are almost like the same thing?

    • @bouncyshak
      @bouncyshak 9 лет назад +1

      Mark IV Ok Mark, I obviously tapped into issues that you have with feminists or whatever. You have painted a caricature in your comment that is totally unrelated to anything I wrote. "Vile stuff", dismissiveness, derision and mocking are all forms of sexism, but you will defend your right to pre-judge male and female feminist views and call them "BS" just as I will defend my right to say it's uncalled for. I'll take your advice and concentrate on more positive people. Good night and good luck.

    • @markiv2942

      *****
      Fair deal.
      I probably have dealed with so many trolls in my life so they don't bother me anymore (I have been moderator years back). It's good if you take my advice because you aren't ever be able to handle it otherwise.
      But like I said earlier, even you started expanding your original "vile" stuff just like what happens when you criticize feminists or their viewpoints. Quite often they are so absurd when thinking we're talking about works of fiction, entertainment and art or those who do them that it's bordering madness. Let alone there's inherint sexism/racism in the feministic ideology towards white males (the illusion of patriarchy). I don't see obsessing with gender roles being positive issue but mostly negative naggati-nag. But that's my problem. :)
      I'm all for equality, but I have myself hit the limit with what I call BS. It is just my take on these issues.
      Thank you and same to you. Take care.
      PS. and I should add so you wouldn't see me complete misogynist dipshit and that there are nice people out here even though they don't agree example about feminism, I was actually looking forward McAdams character the most since I like strong female characters.

    -Ani is just a super logical and focused Detective but lacks people skills due to her rough upbringing (dont go into too much detail).
    Have Frank still there but less screen time - he's good but not that important to the story.
    35% about the murders.
    10% Frank's life
    15% Anis's life
    30% Ray's life
    10% The Department situation

    • @Henbot
      @Henbot 9 лет назад

      Mason Kuehler Direction and Pacing is a problem because they need a great director like Cary Fukunaga. It has nothing to do with a cathartic release-- that will come from the writing and story and the end path for the characters.

      Have to disagree with you on the directing. For one you really want to tell me that someone as such high caliber with directing as Fukunaga couldnt direct this? That would be flat out lie if you did think so. The writing and acting is all excellent-- really like the characters. Acting is really great. The directing of scenes are not so good for me, standard and generic and technically as in how direction is being used with scenes, no where his level of visual poetry.

      Disagree all you like, I'm happy to see Fukunaga's work stand apart. I didn't just want a different location and story, I wanted a different style altogether and that's what I'm getting. These seasons are separate entities entirely, and I'm thoroughly enjoying what I've seen so far.

    Both involve three detectives from different divisions/agencies. Velcoro could be a modern day Bud White.
    Both involve land acquisitions for transportation (in LA Confidential it was freeway investment by the David Strathairn character).
    Both involve shootouts and killings that obstensibly seem to solve the case until the detectives themselves reopen the investigation (this was strongly hinted in the preview for next week's episode).

    What I didn't get is how Rachel McAdams said "If I was a guy, this wouldn't have happened". The superior was right, it generally would have, and probably more often if the guy wasn't in an extremely high place compared to the woman. But if it was a super high power disparity, think the Lewinsky affair, then it would likely not come out. A woman taking advantage of a man is just as likely to happen and perhaps less likely to come out.

    There's a lot of politics in this season and I think it's indicative of society that people are having a hard time following the narrative.
    I know it's been stated before, but this show is about masculinity. How it plays out in life. Who are affected by it. By which standard is it measured.
    I believe that this show is also about how individuals are at the mercy of the powers that be. Whether it be religious institutions or spiritual beliefs; or in this season's case, the actual politics of our society (laws, litigation, bureaucracy, social norms, etc...)

    Yeah, I can't with that ending scene. Compare that to the "hood" robbery scene that was beautifully done with Rusty being outnumbered and in an unfamiliar territory. This seen was a very sloppy siege, no one tried to secure the area, they absolutely should've tried to bide their time until backup came. Yea they got caught off guard but god damn. And when he tried to take the hostage, they pretty much never tried to save the hostage, no talking no negotiating, he was a sacrificial lamb. I just get the sense that these guys are not very good detectives, maybe they're mediocre or competent detectives but the show is called "True Detective." Where is the actual brilliant detective work? IDing a watch that looks exactly like the picture?? Fucking brilliant Batman.
    In season 1, Marty and Russ were fuckups in their personal lives but they were skilled, intelligent detectives who thought outside a box. In this season, they're just kind of fuckups and I really don't feel sympathy for them in any aspect.

    The reason why season 1 blew our minds and worked so well was because it was pretty much a near perfect harmony of southern gothic, crime noir, philosophy (rust's character), gritty/grimy/dirty-ish (in good ways), the overall look/cinematography (to the point where it looked surreal-ish and maybe to a small degree comic booky-ish), and even a hint of the supernatural (the finale especially), and of course McConaughey and Harrelson.
    Also the story was pretty straight forward, it was everything I just described in the above paragraph that made it stand out in terms of a typical television crime drama.
    This season is just.... bleh. I'm sorry but going from the surreal gothic setting of Louisiana to California is REALLY hard to do and it seems like Pizzolato is overcompensating for that by making this Season 2 really strangely complicated story-wise.
    And I also feel he is trying REALLY hard to be deep like the Wire or something (which is one of the HBO shows he's a fan of). Like he's trying REALLY hard this season to be deep, philosophical, dark, gritty, convoluted, with actors that really can't cut it (Farrell is the best but that really isn't saying much), in California.
    And visually the show just has a plain-jane cop drama look and nothing more.
    Season 1 should've just been a one and done thing. This anthology thing isn't working out. Pizzolato needs a team of writers and stop doing it all himself (although he apparently had a co writer with this ep 4).
    Like where is season 3 gonna be in? New York? Chicago? (boring).

    How about the fact that the guy with the bird mask may not have been the one to kill the City Manager? he is the cover up guy, clearly a cop, its the Lt of Vinci PD, he us covering for all the sex parties, Bacchanalia.
    It was the Lt. who took the body , he who shot Velcoro, took the camera, which I think was streaming video, to hide the party connections.
    Riot shot was used because the LT is corrupt not a killer.
    And the reason the Mexican gang members were used to search/sack the City managers place was because a corrupt Lt. would reach out and use them.

    Why do they keep letting Brett review shows?? I can't stand him. All he ever does is complain.

    i hate how they cut one scene in two to show something else from a difference character to go back to the one scene they could have finished. it also jsut seems like they skip scene to scene in a nonsensical manor. yeah that shootout was way too long. with no beautiful tracking shot it was just like 'ok, ya can end any second now" .

    I agree with them, the direction is bad imo. If you listen to the opening music, you'll be expecting the Deus-ex machina scenario here, and it happened. It is a good show, but not a 9/10 show. The final shooting scenario is weird, there were gunshots, explosion and people still around on the first floor and still working. The way they shot it makes me confused, too.

    Four episodes in and all I see is a generic bland detective drama with a failed attempt at Game of Thrones story telling. Season 1 had two characters that we focused on which lead to amazing character development that let us dive deep into who the character was, plus two incredible performances with well balanced relationship between Mathew McConaughey (The calm, deep thinker, methodical loner) and Woody Harrelson (The more outgoing, impulsive, struggling family man). The complemented each other.
    In this season four main characters that all except for Colin Farrell's character are dull and boring. I can honestly say that I don't care about any of their stories. Trying to go back and forth between characters and trying to connect stories that are not interesting just feels forced. I'm still going to watch the rest in the hope it gets better but I doubt it. And for the dummies complaining about comparing seasons, sorry to break this to you but that's what people do when critically reviewing a series with multiple seasons, get over it.

    I like Alonso Duralde, but I don't think the other two are suited to discuss this kind of show... Maybe Girls, or Glee, or fucking Game of Thrones is more their bag.
