True Detective's Controversial "Night Finds You" S2E2 Review

  • True Detective season 2, episode 2, "Night Finds You" is reviewed. Is it possible True Detective killed its central character, Ray, in episode 2?! Evidence about bullet placement and trailer footage seem to point one way, but could it be a fakeout to the audience? Is it now glaringly obvious Paul Woodrugh is gay? Or does he have emotional trauma, as flashback scenes may suggest? Was this episode's dialogue believable and strong in context?
    Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap, Linoleum Knife, John Iadarola (Think Tank), and Robert Abele (LA Times Movie Reviews) discuss.

    He is not dead, the "killer" would never bother with a mask if the intent was to kill. This is about a message/warning.

    • @HunterkHz
      @HunterkHz 9 лет назад +1

      Peer165 Or he wore a mask because it's a TV show and they don't want to give away the person they are looking for in the second episode of the season?

    • @Peer165
      @Peer165 9 лет назад +1

      I doubt it. They didn't even have to show the "killer" at all, just a shotgun pointed at Ray, and him falling over from the gunfire. If however, there was a desire to show more, the camera angle would never reach above shoulders in order to preserve the identity hidden. The animal like mask seems a bit arbitrary just to hide the face from us viewers, or Ray. He was supose to witness it for some reason.
      Your talking about a typical plot convenience from an old 80's show, or a really bad Saw sequel.

    • @Dfective11
      @Dfective11 9 лет назад

      Peer165 The killer had also be prepared for failing, Ray escaping and seeing his face.

    • @Peer165
      @Peer165 9 лет назад +1

      Dfective11 Then he would wear a traditional mask, or something just with two eyeholes. I don't see the point of wearing that particular mask just to consive oneself. But, hey... I'm neither a psychopat killer, a hitman for pay or a screenwrighter, so I guess its possible. I just dont see it right now.

    Rock salt rounds or bean bag shot.
    People do realize there are actually non-lethal ammunition for every guns they sell out there?
    Bean bag or rock salt can actually kill people if the person is unlucky, but he got shot in the gut/stomach and Ray could've been wearing a bulletproof vest.

    • @nickstoli
      @nickstoli 9 лет назад

      MyLostTemple If he lives, I'll buy that he was shot with non-lethal ammo to send him a message. But if he lives because he was wearing a bullet proof vest? That will be too much to take.

    • @HunterkHz
      @HunterkHz 9 лет назад

      Jay Quintana How? He's a cop investigating a foreign place at night. Wouldn't it make sense for him to be wearing one just in-case?

    • @Stand_By_For_Mind_Control
      @Stand_By_For_Mind_Control 9 лет назад

      MyLostTemple Hence the shotgun. Simply using that type of gun opens up the possibility.
      My bet is the next episode opens with Vaughn getting water splashed in his face tied to a chair.

    • @nickstoli
      @nickstoli 9 лет назад +1

      Hunter Knight I don't mind the cop wearing the vest, but for the killer not to think he's wearing one, that's the issue I have. Why not put the second shot between his eyes?
      Having said all this, I'm enjoying this season. Though, naturally, not as much as season one.

    • @zeonmx
      @zeonmx 9 лет назад

      Jay Quintana
      We don't know if the killer was intending to kill whoever entered the house or incapacitate him with non-lethal rounds to send a message. But since we know Ray is alive, I'd go with the latter.

    True Detective is one of my favorite things. The first season was absolutely transcendent and it has not left my mind since, but this new season is personally even more compelling. Never has any episode left me so incredibly anxious and frustrated. I do not think we saw his death. It must have been some warning from those being investigated or perhaps he's being tortured/kidnapped? Remember that bird's head was seen in the car when Casper was being driven. At the time, that image seemed like unrelated weirdness. Whoever shot Ray also killed Casper, or maybe the killer stole that head from someone else. I am so very confused now, but also entirely obsessed,

    The Birdman is sending a message to Frank but who is instructing him to do so Idk. He sent a message by killing Casper the way he did and now through Ray basically "I could have killed your cop, stay away." Possibly used rubber bullets with a bullet proof vest on, yet I will admit point blank to the gut looks brutal as hell either way.

    Definitely a step in the right direction compared to last week's episode, but still pretty weak by this show's standards. The writing is so cringe-worthy sometimes and the Rachel McAdams character is still pretty cliched. And the casting for Vince Vaughn was probably the worst decision this show has made; I have not taken him seriously in a single scene he's had.

    The characters in the first season of True Detective, just within the first few episodes, were far more endearing than the ones for the 2nd season. Woody Harrelson's character was charming in his naivete and funny with respect to his hypocrisy, and Matthew McConaughey's character was engaging because his character was philosophical and insightful. The tension between these polar opposites made the show interesting, independent of the murder mystery. This season's True Detective has three characters who, outside of their depressing backgrounds, aren't really all that witty, sharp, funny, or interesting. Hopefully they flesh them out more, instead of merely having them just appear sad and damaged throughout the entirety of this season.

      ***** Agreed, though I really like McAddams character already. She's shown she's smart with how quickly she figured Farrell out and is clearly obsessed with her job. She won't get in a relationship and she does basically nothing else besides work. She seems like this seasons Harrelson.

    Didn't anyone notice the very creepy crow painting behind Colin Farrell in the shrink's office ? It looked like some weird Inca or Aztec occult crow painting. Not dissimilar in style to the decorations on the skeleton statue that Farrell looks at in Caspere's house in episode 1.

      Mark Hogan I think the Shrink may become more of a pivotal character later. I got the vibe from the room full of masks is a visual tie to the Carcosa rituals in season 1. Plus he knew her as a child. "All kind of secrets in the world... All kinds of truth". He screams 'old man Smithers who owns the amusement arcade' to me...

    • @teamamericaworldpoli

      John Shepard
      What I mean is, the guy who shoots Farrell wore a crow mask, and here, the shrink has a crow painting. It's obvious, but my point is this psychiatrist will likely end up being involved in some creepy/mysterious/nefarious way.

    • @oooSKYLIGHTooo
      @oooSKYLIGHTooo 9 лет назад +2

      Mark Hogan All of the main characters appear to have overly unstable backgrounds, potentially with ongoing psychological scars. They have flagged this too prominently... over emphasised it in fact. I am hoping this is not simply overbearing storytelling. The subtlety of the original series seems to have changed too drastically for this not to mean something.

    Kitsch's character is certainly not "unquestionably" gay, it just can't be ruled out as of now. They alluded several times (rather obviously) that he could possibly be gay, but the scene with his mother reveals a few weird possibilities. There could have been some kind of abuse or molestation happening in his childhood that caused him to evade sexual contact altogether.

    • @soldatheero
      @soldatheero 9 лет назад

      Nick Molnar I don't really understand why anyone assumed he is gay? What allusions to that did I miss? Just because he is interested in some woman hes fucked a 1000s times doesn't mean he is gay. The "anxiesty cop" comment doesn't imply he is gay at all it just means he is obviously withdrawn and fucked up. I agree with you that it seems more that he was abused possibly by the mother and maybe also a male which would explain why he wanted to punch the gay guy hitting on him.

    • @nickymo
      @nickymo 9 лет назад

      soldatheero Possible clues in this episode alluding to the gay thing include him making a strange offhand comment about decking a gay man for hitting on him. Even Colin Farrel's partner in the scene was like "What? Why would you do that?" In episode one he used viagra to have sex with the hot lady, and in the end of episode two while he's drinking a beer on his porch we see him very clearly staring at gay people in the street. I won't spoil anything if you haven't seen episode three yet but it puts him in a lot more situations where he comes into contact with gay related things, and it's much more deliberate this time. It is still a loose theory but I've personally been buying into it more and more with each new episode.

    • @soldatheero
      @soldatheero 9 лет назад

      Nick Molnar Yeah that is true too many things for them to be going nowhere with it.. but if you look at each "clue" individually it can be explained as something else but taken together they must be going somewhere.. at firsti did not notice the seen with him staring at the transexuals (ep2) why is he there at that hotel is he not investigating those individuals or someone associated with them?

    • @nickymo
      @nickymo 9 лет назад

      soldatheero That's a great way to put it. The individual scenes containing the gay hints allude to nothing alone, but as they pile on top of each other more and more with each episode the direction his character is heading in becomes clearer and clearer. i guess that is how every story ever is structured and I'm pointing out the obvious haha, I just like the way you said it.

    RAY IS NOT DEAD
    I don't understand how there are still people that think he's dead: we have seen scenes with Ray walking alongside the other guys in the trailers, that we havent seen yet. there are images of him in bandages with Ani.
    he's not dead and the therapist is not the crow, that drawing in his office was too obvious, it's a red herring.
    Also, why is it "good" to kill a main character so abruptly? because of GoT? I always thought that show relied most of it's appeal on shock value, just killing people you wouldnt expect dying is not good writing, it's lazy, I dont know why people praise that show, escapes me...

    The reason why I think he may be dead is because when Colin Farrell was on Jimmy Fallon he talked about the scenes he had with the different actors and he said he was only in two (or a couple, sure exactly which word he used) with Taylor Kitsch. That would not make sense if they were investigating this case together for the whole show. So maybe he's dead, but he will be in through flashbacks - he's clearly been on the seedy side of the city for ages and it's likely he's crossed paths with all the major criminal players that could be involved in this story.

    He walked into the house, saw the blood, holsters the gun, checks the closet and sees the webcam.camera, ignores it, turns around and gets shot twice within in camera view.
    Why did he holster his gun after seeing the blood? Why did he ignore the Camera or even check that closet? If I'm not supposed to be there, then I think I would've done something about the camera. Why did the birdman wait to shoot him? He waited till he turned around and drew on him. Why shoot him in the gut if he wants to kill him? Also the bird mask was taken off the wall so the Birdman got it from there.
    I think Ray may have been in on it and set it up for a reason

    Thought this episode was great, so much better then the first. Ending definitely was WOW. First episode was interesting to watch again too, was better. First episode it definitely was a prologue.
    Get a feeling that part of the theme is alienation and I get a vibe of Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.
    If he had body armour he be injured, also rock salt, beanie rounds could of been used. I think all characters rather interesting and kinda more interested in them then the plotting.

    Love your discussion. I don't think it's going to be the end of Ray. I'm hoping the show is as clever as I hope it is. There's got to be something bigger involved.

    I feel like there would have been a lot of blood splatter from buckshot or a slug at close range like that. Could've been a been bag. Although the scene was kinda dark, maybe I just missed it.

    There seems to be a 'thing' where great characters are obviously killed off, but then story filled throughout the season - I just finished watching Bloodline which also does something like that with a..or the biggest character in the season - letting you know he's dead right off the top. They then filled in the route to his death throughout the season.

    This was the first episode I watched. I normally don't watch TV series' but this was on and It's so beautifully shot that I had to keep watching and turns out the show is great.

    Not dead...Regarding Paul being gay, the mom also mentions (as seen in the clip) that all the girls like him which he seems to be oblivious too...

    The chances of surviving a shotgun blast at such close range are very slim, but Rust survived that stabbing in season 1. I'm loving this season.

    No blood splatter from a shotgun at close range, weird. He's wearing a bulletproof vest ;-)

    I was thinking he got shot with a rubber bullet, like a shotgun pellet they use at riots.

    I disagree. I found the wife's monologue clunky. Kudos to the actress- she worked her butt off trying to sell it but it was so basic "You're bad. You're a bad person. You used to be good. You were good at being decent" - on the nose to say the least!

      ***** It was a well acted scene but the dialogue was hammy. As I said she really put in the work to sell it.

    I don't think they can kill Farrell. The other characters aren't strong enough to keep it going, even if they still use him in flashbacks. Vince Vaughn still comes across as a goofball to me; he doesn't have the range to do this character.

      TheTruthiest McAdams is a great actress; I got faith in her carrying the rest of the season (as long as she got someone for her to play off of) . Just by that convo in the car, she and Farrell are just one tier above everyone else on this show.

      Astral Projection There was plenty of hints, him looking down on the queers heading to the club, the homophobic comment and just not being not that into having sex on his rediculously hot gf
