- True Detective, season 2, episode 3 is reviewed. The mystery is solved: Ray lives. Viewers are mixed on this outcome, but nonetheless, he continues to be a central part of the show. Bezzerides and Woodrugh investigate Mayor Chessani's possible connection to Caspere's death by going to his home, and make an interesting discovery. Semyon proves who he is, and to some extent, so does the actor playing him, Vince Vaughn.

Sorry guys but those camera pans you do in there are just horrendous. You need a dolly or something...Or just leave the classic close-up and generals, it's less distracting.
Bohmer ...agree
Yes please stop.
Bohmer Or at least don't cut to whoever the pan is landing on but yeah maybe pan once at the start to show off your group. Don't keep having random unmotivated pans
Bohmer I literally have to look away from the screen when they start that shit. It's ridiculously annoying.
Bohmer Concur!
Vaughn's character is pronounced Se-Moan
Broke Black Mountain
You guys have to start watching MrRobot.
Here's an interesting detail. Vince Vaughn's character is named Frank Semyon, which was likely inspired by the Russian philosopher Semyon Frank.
Thanks, Pizzolatto!
I like how semyon looked like a good guy and the most normal character in the first episode but as the series advances he stars drawing himself back to the wild criminal life he used to have
I want so badly to like this season more than I do. The main four characters are just not nearly as gripping as Rust and Marty... There is too much going on and the characters are subsequently underwritten. Everything seems muddled and there is no real sense of direction/progression. I am still enjoying it, but there's no way someone could convince me this season is as good as last (at least so far... and it's not looking like that will change).
To me the best part of the episode was the opening scene, very david lynch very Blue Velvet.
To those who say season 1 was better.
Yeah, no shit.
Everything in S 1 is completely different in S 2, the story, the characters, even the opening is different. Get over it. If you don't enjoy this season, then don't watch it.
Preach it! I'm so sick of the whining! People keep forgetting that season 1 was a SLOW BURN the first couple episodes! Yes the acting was terrific from the get-go...but it's not like the story started REALLY getting good til about 3-4 episodes in! And so far, Season 2 is turning out to be JUST FINE! I don't know why people are bitching & moaning about it so much! Colin Farell is knocking it out of the park, Rachel McAdams is impressive, Vince Vaughn might get an emmy nod right along with Farell, and hell...even Taylor Kitch has been bringing his A-Game! So what the fuck is everyone so pissed off for?! I swear...sometimes I think We're all just a bunch if whiney, entitled fucks who can never be satisfied with anything. Jesus... (**smh**) 😒
KabbalahSherry yeah i don't like it so fuck it, I'm gonna stop watching now, i also think rachel McAdams is great in everything she's in, as long as she dies in the beginning, you know like in that southpaw movie.
Well I did like season 1 since the very first episode. This season isn't terrible but it hasn't grabbed me so far I feel like something is missing. I'll keep watching though.
I like you guys and watch a lot of What the Flick, but ditch those intermittent panning shots. They are super distracting.
Whats with the pan and scan shots in this episode.....come on guys
Fukunaga is an executive producer this season.
Why are they not discussing the elephant in the room? This season is inferior to the previous season in every way, and sometimes glaringly so. The direction isn't as good, nor are the actors, nor is the dialogue, nor is the plot. There were scenes in Ep.3 where there was literally bad, unconvincing acting. This should be an anathema for a show at this level on this network. There was dialogue where someone should've stopped and said "This isn't working. This isn't natural. No one in real life talks like this." "Half anaconda, half great white"? Seriously, what the fuck? And there were other times when the scenes and dialogue just wasn't working. And everyone in this show has this conspicuous vice to make them textural and conflicted, but as plot devices they're too damned overt. He's a badass, but he's gay. She's a hardnosed by-the-books cop, but she's got a porn habit/sex addiction. Delcoro is a dirty cop, with a skeleton from his past. It's all too Screenwriting 101.
I think the direction is very good.
+bob jones You have to apply the criticism that the dialogue sounds unnatural to the first season as much as you do to this season. No one talks like Rust Cohle. The whole melancholy-SAT vocab saturated-"there is no point to life"-pseudo-intellectual dialogue is just a part of this show no matter what season, apparently. I like this season. You shouldn't compare this season to the first because they are meant to be completely different. The dynamic of this season is still more interesting than most things on TV, so I'm on board.
bob jones Although the first season was fantastic, I'm digging this season quite a lot. It's a whole 'nother thing. Part of what I like so much is the dialog too. It's very noir. Cool stuff.
I feel a certain stridency in this comment, bob. And frankly, I'm apoplectic.
bob jones Totally agree. It was so dull. In this review they mentioned all the action in the episode but I struggled to remember it and I watched it yesterday. Totally forgot about the car fire and the movie set. This review made the show more interesting - basically, three dudes talking at a table were more arresting than the actual scenes in the show. I'm curious to see where it goes because Season 1 was so strong, but if I came in at Season 2 I'd be out by now.
So many "amazing" being said. What's amazing about this show? The directing is terrible. The acting, with a few exceptions, is pure sadness. The plot doesnt hold water. Is TYT being sponsored by HBO?
I can't believe it's a HBO show.
Did you watch season 1?
I did. I liked it, except for the finale.
hammett3
I liked the finale.
VV was losing (or close to) losing his shit almost in every scene he was in, it was great.
Fuckin A right! LOL 😄 I loved it too! I predict both Vaughn & Farrel will get True Detective noms. They are both knocking it out of the park so far! Screw the naysayers!
Not loving this season at all. I have NO interest in any of these characters. Last season was much more engaging.
tio borracho Yeah...last season benefited from going with TWO main characters. This season, there are three main "police" characters, PLUS Vince Vaughn, PLUS, Vince's entourage...it's just too much, spread too thin. Not sure if they were trying to (over)compensate for not having two *real* powerhouse actors this season, or what...
tio borracho McAdams is completely unbelievable as this tough cop.
MrDunedon
Last season also had a BETTER murder case. A Satanic serial killer who had to be caught before more innocent girls were killed. I couldn't care less about this seasons case.
Jay Quintana
She can't help being "cute" but if they were going to sell her as a tough cop out of control they should have shown her abusing a suspect or snitch already. Or that cliche meeting with her boss telling her to pull herself together or she's out of there. Something.
tio borracho
Yeah...to be honest with you, the case this season really isn't all that clear yet. Someone's taking the eyes of the victims, which is somewhat intriguing...and the person in the bird mask, OK, somewhat intriguing, too. But I dunno; it's like something just isn't coming together here. In any event, this season is 8 episodes long, so I'm definitely gonna ride this out and see where it goes.
Loved the bizarre opening i always have dreams like that
I really liked the opening scene almost Lynchian especially in the first shot. Very happy but not surprised that Ray isn't dead. Simian is become ever more interesting and a great fight scene from him though his dialogue seems a bit hammy sometimes. Taylor Kitsch's character seems very 2-D but hopefully he'll be given something to do soon with the same sentiment for Rachael McAdam's character.
Yeah the opening sequence reminded me of Blue Velvet.
I love this season! The acting is superb, especially McAdams and Vaughn. McAdams has referred twice to the small town of Vinci, yet it employs so many people. Vaughn's character finally had a way out with the road development, wanting to start a family, finally a good payday, but it crumbled with the murder and now you see his desperate true self re- emerging.... He referred the club as a headache
Needs more pan shots.
Velcoro having to speak to Semyon on a regular basis is a reason to have a thesaurus on hand it was bound to rub off on him.
So out of 3 hours of show time, the female detective has looked at porn for 10 seconds of air time and that equates to a porn addiction?
Those pan shots are super distracting, it would be great if you guys stuck to your usual coverage
The director was Steven Seagal. I mean. duh
Dude stop twirling your f***ing foot!
Ready to give up on this show. I loved last season, and I watched every episode several times. I can't even watch these new episodes ONE TIME. HORRIBLE.
Get the fuck out here
I didn't watch the first season but this season is so good
Frank Wave Give the first season a shot. It's probably best, though, to go in without high expectations. Just expect a good cop show, nothing more.
Why you didn't watch it?
Frank Wave first season was the best thing ive ever watched
Not a fan of the pan camera, sorry
Otherwise, great review guys!
I like the actors and the overall mood of the show. My beef is the directing, I can't stop thinking this is the Fast n Furious guy. Also, its a pretty confusing show and i'm not one of those people who usually says "i'm lost" during a movie.
Besides that, Anyone feel that Justin Theroux would make a really good true detective?
I agree with you that getting Justin Lin to direct the first two episodes was not a good decision. I mean they are freaking HBO they could get much better directors or talented independent directors not the fast and furious guy. Hopefully the direction improves in the next episodes.
Enrique Godinez Its only the first two Justin Lin is doing?? Then who?
Yeah it really pisses me off hollywood did that with true detevtive.. "Oh the big adrenaline junkie douchbag fans will love seeing the fast n furious director, lets get him to draw in the trendy mainstream followers to the dark edgy true detective. Screw art, lets make some money baby!"
siqpuppie
Well the rest of the episodes will no longer be directed by justin lin the other directors I don't know who they are except for Dan Attias who has directed episodes for The Sopranos and The Wire.
The Bodyguard...he speaks.
Barley hahaha
Kshaka He's the killer. What said was creepy and all.
Jesus, this was so much better without Mankiewicz. Sorry, ... had to say it. Please keep this group and add Cenk as a sub when necessary!!
Kudos WTFlick!
interesting shot with the panning. check out Red Rock Micro's One Man Crew for subtle movement for the wide shot as well since I think that might be the look that you're going for. sorry for giving unsolicited advice. cheers.
I'm not engaged either. I don't like the stories, I don't like the phase of the show. It's just worse TV than the first season. And I was kind of waiting for the WTF guys to come in and just admit that this is just a mess and not interesting writing. Sorry, 2 episodes of building up and not totally capturing your addiction for it; is OK as long as it's going somewhere.
Some of the characters are great but this just doesn't feel right. And I'm not trying to compare it as much to the first season. All I'm saying is I am not enjoying the show right now. And tbh I'm not even that interested in watching the next episode. I will, but it has to pick up. 5/10 for me, this episode.
Frank's bodyguard with the awesome shorty shotgun is so fucking cool! Even his facial expressions are badass
I never found Vince Vaughn intimidating before this show. That whole cast, in fact, is incredible. I also learned never to get into a knife fight with Rachel McAdams.
Why are people that are liking this season shitting and and unfairly criticizing season 1? As if that season wasn't great. Why do people get offended and mad so easily?
I completely agree that keeping ray alive was tge right decision. The question is was the cliff hanger itself a right decision. If you kill him you loose the strongest charecter and if you keep him alive you loose credibility. They could have ended the episode with ambulances arriving to the house
Ani has an obvious gambling problem-Semyon owns gambling houses-is there some connection? Maybe down the road we see another cop owned by Semyon, one that is paying back a debt?
Whose doing the camera work? No need for fancy guys, wide and close that's all you need or want
Best wife walk to answer the door, ever. The mayor and his family, class acts.
John has my dream job; gets to talk about tv and politics everyday
You guys should really review Mr. Robot.
Please don't do those close pan shots. It isn't natural and is almost straining to watch
First! So this is how it feels... The force is strong in this one! :D
oh god these pans are ridiculous
Please review Mr. Robot
good talk, you guys are great!
I was into the chase seen.
The amazing scene is Alonzo kidding. That was one of the worst scenes in any TV show I've ever seen.
tyro apache didnt think that tbh, myself
Sweet boots John.
I dug the episode. But what was up with Gambit and the E-Cig?
Yeah they made the e-cig joke on two episodes what's up with that? Yeah i didn't get it.
"Lots of dads in the show... but no moms".... come on
So far.... 2 dads in Farrell father + McAdams father
2 moms.... Taylor Kitschs mother + Abigal Spencers character is a mother to Farrells child.
Is it the feminist brain talking?
Yeah it's the feminist brain talking. They all complain about "lack of female characters" yet when there are obviously there they still complain about not having enough. Feminism is more concerned about media censorship and complain than what the first wave feminism and second wave feminism were actually for.
- Good point.
We've already seen the rapist by the way, it seems pretty clear that Simian set up the attack to get Ray in his pocket but if you rewind back to Vince Vaughn's intimidation scene in episode 2 he has a guy attack the driver and he is very distinctly ginger, he's also seen briefly in episode 3 and if you rewind even further to episode 1 the picture shown of the supposed attacker has dark black hair.
Well South Park did confirm that they have no souls so I feel my thought process is legitimate.
I thought Ray already killed the rapist...
It's implied that he has but a lot of people including myself believe Ray's wife was set up but Vince Vaughn in order for him to get a police officer in his pocket, so by saying it was this guy (the photographs in episode one) not only does he get someone he wants to be killed actually killed he also then has Ray in his pocket for providing the information but we all know Ray's kid is a tubby ginger lad so the odds are the guy in the photo being the assailant are very small.
Thomas Aitken "Well, Southpark did confirm that gingers have no souls..."
Bwahahaha! 😅 I died! I had forgotten all about that episode! One of the classics (best) of Southpark too! Ha! Poor gingers!
I'm on record, Vince Vaughn is the killer
Aaron Powell The killer of Gaspare? or the killer of Stan and the rapist?
Aaron Powell Yeah, the killer of whom exactly?
Both murders so far.
Well it'd be seriously silly if he killed Casper since he was alone in a room and angry at Casper for not showing up to the meeting (Episode 1). In other words, he was not trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes. Unless he was trying to get in to character of believing he actually did not kill Casper when he actually did, I think you are wrong. But we shall see...
Aaron Powell I'll go on record saying that it's some sort of Vigilante group. They specifically dump Gaspare's body in an area that get's the State police involved so that they can clean up corruption in Vinchy.
Gaspare's injuries are symbolic. The chemicals that dissolve his eyes symbolize the chemical that he dumped in the ocean.
They shoot his genitals to punish him for taking advantage of prostitutes.
They incapacitate Ray in Gaspare's apartment so that he will be found there without a legitimate explanation.
people criticize this season's writing, but last season was pretty ridiculous as well. nobody, aside from a pretentious freshman philosophy major, would talk like rust cohle, but we all still enjoyed it. wait until this season is over before you pan it.
also, even though you've never reviewed a 30 minute TV show (afaik), you might want to make an exception for "Rick & Morty." The first season was one of the most clever and visually impressive cartoons i've seen in a long time.
Kinshasa9200 Matthew McConaughay sold it better. Plus you had the comic relief of a "straight man" in Woody Harrelson, saying "what the f are you talking about?" every time Rust went off into one of his dark speeches. Everyone in this show is dark. There's no relief and therefore no texture. Therefore it's boring.
***** you are dumb, season one script was fucking great, this season is garbage and they deserve the negative reviews they are getting.
***** i thought collin ferrel had some pretty great and funny lines. Yea the banter between rust and marty was entertaining but the overall tone of the show was dark and depressing. Underage girls mutilated and raped is some dark shit
SpikeSpiegel_3030
Definitely dark, but there was way more texture. Even something simple like the family scenes with Michelle Monaghan. There were still undercurrents that were disturbing in those scenes, but they were lit differently and it made you feel like you were watching a three dimensional show. This feels one dimensional. And I agree with another commenter on here: some of the acting was so bad in scenes it was distracting. That guy on the stairs with the fake accent thing - I cringed throughout. The cast were uniformly strong in the first Season. I think Farrell and McAdams are carrying this Season and it may have been stronger with just their storylines.
What are you talking about? Season 1 was incredible in a lot of ways. Also you are judging Rust because nobody talks like him? So what? He talks like that because that's his character. Who said fictional characters needed to talk like an average guy, that's what makes characters more interesting why would you want characters acting and talking in the monotonous way people talk on everyday life.
