This season was underrated AF. It only caught flak because it followed the perfection of season 1. Is season 2 perfect? No, but it is a really cool slice of west coast noir. I love the vibe season 2 has. One of Colin Farrells best acting roles imo.
Glad you guys decided to watch it. I think it's amazing. Something I thought was interesting is that the case have all said how much they enjoyed working with the showrunner. He allowed them a lot of freedom to find the characters.
wow, I didn't expect to see the second season, but no matter what anyone says about season 2, it's not as good as the first, but the music and the atmosphere of hopelessness and apathy are on top here. so enjoy the depression while you watch.
The scene where Collin Farrell beats the bullys dad was improvised, it wasnt in the script. Collin was supposed to wave his gun in his face but Collin started with the beating and the other two actors went along, he even used his own brass knuckles. He apologized profusely afterwards.
If you go in with knowledge of noir films, and expect a noir show with all the trappings of the genre, it's a solid season. The writing is wilder than s1, but that's it leaning into its noir roots. The opening theme's lyrics change from episode to episode iirc, which is a cool touch. And Lera Lynn's music work in the show us just top tier, they did a great job bringing her in.
Superb! This season is so good. It gets so much hate for not being Season 1, or for splitting its focus between too many people, but I hope you love it, it has some phenomenal characters.
Even though I personnally found S2 lackluster (though I must admit I did not finish it), I really hope you guys follow through with this and watch S3. Apparently not many people did, which is a shame because I found S3 to be exceptionnal!
The only REAL problem with season 2 is it's not as good as season 1. It never COULD HAVE BEEN, S1 was lightning in a bottle, and then Nic Pizzolatto and co had to repeat the process with what came after and it was impossible. So they just did the best they could and this was what we got. It's not perfect by any stretch, but it doesn't deserve the hate, this is sttill HEAD AND SHOULDERS above a lot of other shows that are far more well received. So good on you for giving it a chance.
Thanks for doing season two. One of the only reaction channels who does it. Season 2 gets so much flack. It's far superior to 90% of TV shows and better than overrated season 3
"Never do anything out of hunger. Not even eating." Episode 1 was just a small sampling of great Fank Semyon quotes, or what I prefer to call "Semyonisms." True Detective Season 2 is fantastic.
I'm looking forward to hear your opinions on Season 2. As everyone has said already, Season 1 is superior and it's an almost impossible bar to clear. I have my own opinion about S2 and why it couldn't stack up against S1 but the journey is half the fun, can't wait for more!
I will watch it with you. It’s true that season 1 was one of THOSE television seasons that we call great television. It’s always a drag to follow a season like that. But that doesn’t mean 2 & 3 are terrible. Far from it.
I know people that have strong opinion that this season is not good and in each case they never even finished half the season. It’s a strong season and in some aspects the strongest
Season 2 is some of the goofiest, most embarrassing, bathos-riddled nonsense ever. It was clearly made by a sadist with a grudge against the audience and the first season.
This one just didn't land with me. Too far departed from Season 1 (in tone, visuals, quality 😅), mediocre writing, and felt like a waste of an amazing cast. I probably had too high of expectations for something of equal or better quality to the first 😅
S2 is mad underrated, ya it’s not s1 but it’s good tv and Colin Farrell/Ray Fuckin rule. If this was its own new detective show and not TD s2 it would’ve been way better received
Hell yeah. So many people talk so badly about this sesson, I dont know why. Yes, it is not season 1, no Matthew McConaughey, no Woody Harrelson but still: It has great actors and a great pretty dark story. It grew a lot over time for me and I still dont know why people bad mouth it so much. Compared to the dull and boring stuff that comes out these days mostly it is really good.
Agree. I like to think of it like chrisma and "characters strength" divided between antagonists. So like 4 chracters in s2 = 2 characters in s1. At my first watch I stoped it.after 2 episodes - this much I was disappointed. Few yaers later I came back and it's got me. In conclusion, I think we should consider these series like different stories, but not criticise and not look back on s1 to compare

I am one of the few people that really liked Season 2. It's dark and bleak but out in the sunlight. As long as you let it stand on it's own, it's not perfect, but it's not bad.
Velcoro’s anger drives this season for me. Take note of his dialogue, it’s so quotable to me. It gives insight to his seemingly one dimensional psyche. My favorite character this season.
Listen, season 1 was a masterclass in every way with Woody & Matthew giving lifetime best performances of their careers. That’s lightning in a bottle. Season 2 is still good television & worthwhile to watch. Thanks for giving it a chance. I feel like season 3 is almost as good as season 1. It’s very difficult to match season 1 & especially with each season being different makes it even more challenging. Still one of my favorite franchises in TV history. I feel like I could watch any of the seasons over & over again & still enjoy them.
Wow I'm very surprised to see a True Detective Season 2 reaction! But it's a good surprise! I think this season is quite misunderstood, while I do acknowledge that it's not to everyone's taste. It's so different from season 1 and maybe the contrast from that was just too big for many people. It's a wild ride like someone else said. Maybe, very much unlike season 1, it would be wise not to take everything extremely seriously. Some of the acting and dialogue will feel off but I think it fits the more pulpy feel this season. Some of these characters belong more in a cheap detective novel than they would season 1 and overall this season feels more like it leans towards a Refn or Lynch with some of its "off-maybe not entirely realistic-moods" than it does the solidity of season 1. The plot(s) I remember as very complicated and at times hard to follow but also interesting right to the end. Like Season 1 it's very well produced overall but with a lot more idiosyncratic driven choices from the makers this time around. Personally I love that. Colin Farrell is thrilling to watch this series, maybe his best performance ever, and he is worth the watch alone I think. Thank you guys for watching this! I think you're the first. I also really like your current watch of The Boys and you did a great job on Season 1 also.
No Spoilers. Season two has a good story, great characters, and some iconic scenes and sequences. What happened is that the writer/creator clashed with the director of season one, Cary Fukunaga. Fukunaga directed One almost like we would a movie, hence the consistent tone and look. Also, Fukunaga is top tier. However, they didn't get on. So for season two, the creator took over and ran it more like a regular TV set up, getting various directors for different episodes, while he himself was the real driving force. This resulted in it being less skillfully edited and becoming bloated. He realized this and for Season Three went for single high level movie director for every episode model again, with Jeremy Saulnier (amazing), but they clashed and Saulnier left after two eps. So I guess we know who the common denominator was in the trouble. So yeah, for me, if you cut down S2's jumbo length episodes later one , and preen away some of the bloat, it's actually pretty good. And with a single director a la S1, it would be excellent. I don't want to come off like I'm throwing shade a the creator/writer though, Season 1 is a masterpiece.
Finally someone reacting to following seasons. Yes, season 1 is the best. But the other two, especially the third one, are definitely worth a watch. Seems stupid that a lot of people skip them completely just because they're not as good as the masterpiece that is season 1.
This may be only me, but I think the generally negative public reaction is similar to Westworld. In both cases, season 1 was SO great that it was automatically a letdown watching following seasons. Impossible to live up to season 1. In both cases, I think those 2 series are vastly superior to most tv, yet the public somehow feels it's "cool" to hate on them.
A lot of people didn't like season 2 when it came out, but I think that they were just expecting it to be like 1 too much. I tried to just be open minded about it, tho, and take it as it is, and while maybe not *as* good as 1, i still thought it was really good. And that song by Lera Lynn, omg, so haunting. 🖤
So I'm joining you on this reaction. I started season two. I had skipped over this season. Love Season 1 and 3 so this should be interesting just to compare.

This season is different style wise, it has some deep stories on another level from S1. Crooked cops and politicians holding to their power by all means, fathers and sons, people finding each other at the right time in their lives, vengeance, acceptance of thyself, and so much more, and it's all amazingly intertwined in a complex detective investigation. All five main actors did a beautiful job. Also, Jordan and Frank are a power couple to die for
Hurrrayyyyy!!!!! So awesome to see you both be enjoying this second season. It can feel a Lil crowded at times. But it is such a fantastic payoff. Annie is a badass!! So cool to see such a fierce female character be smart and kick so much butt. Thanks so much you two. 😊😊
Yes this is awesome most channels don't follow up the second season. This is one of my favorite season cuz of the actors and the story love it love it love it love it love it. Thank you guys very much for your content love it love it love it love it
This season we so badly cast. Vince Vaun looked out of his depth and his wife Kelly Reilly has one expression for all situations. The whole season feels like a cheap episode of CSI.

Nice, the second and third seasons are very worthwhile.
This one might be the most rewatchable.

Nothing's gonna beat the first one .. but season 2 is a great watch !
I'm in the minority that actually prefers season 2, everyone was amazing in this and Vince Vaughn and Collin Farrell are massive standouts!

If you told me Vince Vaughn and his wife won their roles in a raffle Id believe you. They were terrible. Colin Farrell was good.
Oh God, Kelly Reilly is so so bad in this role. Though admittedly you'd need to be Meryl Streep to do anything decent with the script she was given.

The reason season 2 gets a bad wrap it's because it didn't live up to the season 1 hype. That's it.
Season 2 isn't trash but in comparison to Season 1 it's trash.
This season is much more of a slow burn than season 1.
Best of S2 is by far the music of Lera Lynn.
