- I originally posted this tutorial in 4 parts because my computer was having a hard time saving this and I know that most people tend to prefer shorter videos. I thought others might prefer the entire project to be contained in one video so that's what this is about. I'm also including the full written pattern below. Here's a link to the pattern on my site which has different formatting and might be easier for you to print out: www.craftingwithclaudie.com/20...
Pattern:
Crochet Hat With Earflaps - Adult Male Size
~Materials~
Size K (6.50 mm) Crochet Hook
Tapestry Needle
Main Color = 2 skeins of various shades of grey worsted weight yarn
Accent Color = 2 skeins of black worsted weight yarn (or use both ends from the same skein)
~Abbreviations~
ML = Magic Loop ~ • Magic Loop Crochet Method ~
Hdc = Half Double Crochet Stitch ~ • Half Double Crochet St... ~
Sl St = Slip Stitch ~ • Slip Stitch (sl st) ~
Ch = Chain Stitch ~ • Crochet Techniques: Ch... ~
YO = Yarn Over
TC = Turning Chain
Hdc2tog = Half Double Crochet Decrease ~ • Half Double Crochet De... ~
~Pattern Notes~
- This hat is made by working two strands of worsted weight yarn together.
- The turning chain (though you don't do much turning) does not count as a stitch. When joining the rounds, you will sl st into top of first hdc, not into the chain.
- This hat is sized for a head circumference of about 23.5 inches.
- If you wish to make the hat a different size, you should stop making increasing rounds (Rounds 2-6) at the desired diameter. Round 7 is an increasing round as well, but it only increases 6 stitches and I would recommend keeping a round with 5 or 6 stitches before making the rest of the hat. If you change the size of the hat, the overall number of stitches will, of course, change.
~Instructions~
Using two strands of Main Color held together, make a Magic Loop.
Round 1: Work 10 hdc into ML. Pull yarn tail tight to close the circle. Sl st into top of first hdc.
Round 2: Ch 2. Work 2 hdc in each stitch. (20). Sl st into top of first hdc.
Round 3: Ch 2. {Work 2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next stitch.} Repeat from { to }. (30). Sl st into top of first hdc.
Round 4: Ch 2. {Work 2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 2 stitches.} Repeat from { to }. (40). Sl st into top of first hdc.
Round 5: Ch 2. {Work 2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 3 stitches.} Repeat from { to }. (50). Sl st into top of first hdc.
Round 6: Ch 2. {Work 2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 4 stitches.} Repeat from { to }. (60). Sl st into top of first hdc.
Round 7: Ch 2. {Work 2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 9 stitches.} Repeat from { to }. (66). Sl st into top of first hdc.
Round 8: Ch 2. Work 1 hdc in next 65 stitches. For last stitch, work hdc as normal until right before you would make last YO. Using two strands of Accent Color held together, YO and pull through the 3 loops on hook, completing the last hdc of the round. (66). Sl st into top of first hdc. Cut Main Color leaving 5 inch tail to weave in later.
Round 9: Ch 2. Work 1 hdc in each stitch. (66). Sl st into top of first hdc.
Round 10: Repeat Round 9
Round 11: Ch 2. Work 1 hdc in next 65 stitches. For last stitch, work hdc as normal until right before you would make last YO. Using two strands of Main Color held together, YO and pull through the 3 loops on hook, completing the last hdc of the round. (66). Sl st into top of first hdc. Cut Accent Color leaving 5 inch tail to weave in later.
Round 12: Ch 2. Work 1 hdc in each stitch. (66). Sl st into top of first hdc.
Rounds 13 - 17: Repeat Round 12.
~Earflaps~
- Ch 2. Work 1 hdc in next 17 stitches (we are not counting the TC as a stitch). **Ch 2. Turn.
- Work 1 hdc in next 8 stitches. Ch 2. Turn.
- Work 1 hdc2tog, 1 hdc in next 4 stitches, 1 hdc2tog. Ch 2. Turn.
- Work 1 hdc2tog, 1 hdc in next 2 stitches, 1 hdc2tog. Ch 2. Turn.
- Work 2 hdc2tog. Sl st down the side of the earflap, joining at where the earflap meets Round 17.**
- Work 1 hdc in next 39 stitches.
- Repeat from ** to **
- Work 1 hdc in next 10 stitches. For last stitch, work hdc as normal until right before you make last YO. Using two strands of Accent Color held together, YO and pull through the 3 loops on hook, completing the last hdc of the round. Sl st into top of first hdc. Cut Main Color leaving 5 inch tail to weave in later.
- Work hdc around the entire hat and earflaps. You might need to do 2 hdc in the same stitch at the rounded parts at the end of the earflaps. Sl st into top of first hdc. Bind off and weave in ends. - Хобби
I made one for my son-in-law. He loves it. Thank you for easy tutorial
My husband just bought me a bunch of alpaca yarn and he said he wanted a hat. Can't wait to try this!!
Just finished - looks and fits great! (added one more row at the end - single crochet) Thanks for a wonderful, easy to follow tutorial!!!
Thank you for your well-explained tutorial; it's motivating me to begin a new project with yarn odds and ends!
I love the fact that this pattern has been duplicated so many times but usually it’s a dc instead of hdc. I actually prefer hdc. A word to the wise, use a smaller needle if you’re using bulky yarn, redoing mine as it’s entirely too big. I’ve watched lots of instructional videos and yours is great!
Yeah finding the same issue myself. The pattern is great but the hook size is just a bit big and made the hat xtra lrg but all in all this is a really good pattern!
Thank you so much great tutorial, and thank you for the free written instruction
I love this hat !! Thank you so much for sharing this instructional 🤩😁😀
Great tutorial, thanks!
your so cute i was laughing when you said you need to buy some heads for i am in that shape also looked them up on ebay and there pretty cheap so i will be buying me some heads soon too LOL love your patterns
great work i love it
Great job! Thank you!
grammieluli Thanks!

mrsbeya I hope he likes it!
Thank you so much, I like the hat and I'm make it for my son, but I have problem with the ear part, can you help me with it please.mine coming out very well, but ear
can you do it with only one yarn instead of double yarns?
Good hat, a little big but all in all a good pattern. Next time I make it, I'll need to use a smaller hook size :-)
You only mentioned stitch counts on round 1 & 2. Are you increasing each round by 10?
How much yarn do you use? A skein doesnt tell me much. I want to know the weight. Like, is 1of you skeins 100 gram? Do I need 200 g of yarn or less to make this (if not using double strands)
Claudia tare te-ai chinuit cu croseta aia! Cred ca si firul e de vina!
I’m doing 2 colours together it’s black and white
Have you got Facebook page or Instagram page so I can send the photo after I finished it plz
How would i make this without the ear flaps
TFS if you work in a spiral without sl st each round there is no seam at all...
Thank you for saying this, the slip stitch plus starter chain was making this thing look bizzare so I frogged and just used a stitch marker instead
I like the form of this hat (that it*s not that rounded) and I wish to make it for myself. My question is how to adjust measures for women size?
Ivana Urosevic Just take out some of the increase rounds and it'll come out smaller. Skipping rounds 6 and 7 will make it quite a bit smaller and should work for a woman's size if your gauge is close to mine. If you find it's still too big, just take out round 5 too. :) The only thing you'll have to do is adjust where to start the earflaps, but that's not too hard to do.
I followed this and my hat never took the shape of a hat, It looks like a flat beret? Any ideas why?
Missy Ayres Hm...it sounds like your stitch counts were remaining the same on the lower part of the hat (where it would normally pull in on a beret). You might want to count your stitches and see if you lost some somewhere. Hope that helps!
Mine is curling is that suppose to happen?
***** Which part? When you start out, the circle is relatively flat and then when you start doing multiple stitches in some of the stitches, it will curl up since the top of the hat is rounded.
had an issue doing the half double crotchet with the magic loop. I'm not very good with the magic loop anyways. any advice? having a rough time.
If you don't want to do the magic circle loop, just chain 3 or 4, slip stitch to join and it makes a ring which you can work the half double crochets into. It might leave a small hole, but you can use the yarn tail to close it when you're weaving in the ends. Hope that helps!!!
beautiful hat, but the video makes me dizzy, some parts are really blurry, and it's a little too long.
Please ye video Hindi me bany
Not sure where I went wrong, however, it has resulted in a waviness and appears to be misshaped.
Michele Cook Hm...it could be something to do with your tension or stitch counts. Try and count the stitches in the rounds and see if there's a difference.
Here's my irritation...she suddenly stops row counting on row four and then Magically has a count ol of 65 on round eight. :(
Just look at the written instructions under the video
I got frustrated within first 5 mins of this video! couldn't this beanie have an easy start!? Not very useful tutorial.
sunshinezz03 Exactly what was so frustrating about the first 5 minutes? If you don't know how to do the magic loop chain 4 or 5 slip stitch and then make your half double crochets. There's nothing tricky or confusing about what she did, its basic crochet.
Yes, the magic circle is an option. You can just chain 4, connect it as a ring and then half double crochet into the ring and follow the rest of the video.
Sorry, didn't see the comment below with the same instructions. Sorry they were confrontational though, some people don't realize its not as easy for others as is for them.
Did you ever stop to think this is a beginner or someone whose never learned the magic circle method. I've been crocheting for 30 years and still learning things that may be basic to others. Some compassion for another who is frustrated is all that is needed instead of confrontational hostility.
