This worked on a 2007 GL450. You saved me so much headache. I didn't remove the power steering hose. I used a pick to get the clip to move and then used a 90 degree pair of needle nose pliers to pull the clip and reinstall it. Thank you so much!!!

There is an easier way to do it without taking the power steering resevoir out. All you need is an 30 torx bit and long extension to take the oil cooler off. I did it in 10 minutes, only took out the coolant resevoir.

Was the oil-coolant mayo mix created by bad gasket alone or internal failure of heat exchanger??

I always take the complete oil filter housing off and replace both gaskets at the same time. The filter housing gasket and the cooler gasket. These gaskets are a common failure on these engines.

I bet $$ that your PCV breather is bad !!!
The skinny economy gasket on the heat exchanger is sort of designed as a pressure release.
Every system on Benz is extremely well designed to gradually get worse until the point when you notice something's wrong. "Crankcase Breather" is subtle as it keeps blowing all the weakest gasket! 65kMi is a good time to service PCV system - Same also true with belt, cheap plastic idlers bearings and tensioner.
    More power to you!
CAP of Benz "Expansion tank" is also known to go bad, I have not had to diagnose it yet...
    👍🏻
