How To Replace The Engine Oil Cooler Gasket On A Mercedes-Benz E350, C300, SLK350, & More (M272)

- ►If you're finding oil spots underneath your Mercedes-Benz, don't panic-it's probably not from your valve covers or oil pan. It's most likely your oil cooler gasket that is extremely easy to replace.
The M272/M273 engine is unique in the fact that it doesn't really suffer from valve cover leaks like a lot of other engines. Instead, what can appear to be a valve cover leak or even an upper oil pan leak, is usually the oil cooler gasket. You will typically find these leaks toward the left-hand side of the car/engine.
One way to check for the leak is to look for dirt on the oil filter seam. From there, oil trickles down toward the driver's side of the car. If you let the leak progress even further, you will start to notice dirt and oil on the serpentine belt tensioner.

I did this job about a year ago and now the oil filter housing gasket is leaking. They tend to go around the same time. My advise is to remove the oil filter housing and change both gaskets at the same time. I believe that job may be easier than this one because it does not require removing the p/s reservoir etc. Also, you can replace the thermostat at the same time so killing three birds with one stone.
I also replace the P/S reservoir o-ring when I do these three things to make it a fourth bird. That one tends to start leaking about as often, at least on my engine. And while you're at it, there might even be other things to replace, like a belt tensioner, so give everything an inspection.
I saw one a forum someone recommending to replace the housing and cooler when doing this job because they warp over time and cause the leak. Do you think that would be overkill? Mine just started to leak. Can't really tell if its just the cooler or the housing but I was gonna do both anyway.
You can be a good teacher, you explain so good really pleasure to see how you work.
Thanks, SeRo! Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
This is one of the best videos I have seen for working on my w211. I was worried this was going to be a nightmare and after watching this video, I feel much better. Thank you for your help and please keep up the good work.
Love the M272 content!! Bring in as much as possible!
Glad you love it, MainlyManny!
I am learning these tricks for my M276... same engineered failures carried through 🤗
Great video. This is also a great time to replace the camshaft position sensors/magnets as well as the gasket at the base of the oil filter housing
Great point, Mark! Glad you like the video!
As a youngster (like you are) I did lots of DIY maintenance on the lively, enjoyable Alfasuds I then owned. Now I'm beyond 60 years and prefer someone with your type of competence and experience to work on my non-update E350 / M272. I use a great specialist shop who have shown me evidence of their competence to tackle jobs like that awful balance shaft replacement which requires engine removal, etc. However, I'm making notes during your W211 presentations to remind me of jobs I should ask them about and the products you recommend. Thank you for the helpful and knowledgeable 211 videos! Please keep them coming :-)
You are very welcome, Keyyyyzzzz! We will keep the videos coming!
You know this guy knows these engines. I like the way he makes these off comments about random parts that will fail 😁
Kyle has experienced most all of these things on his own cars, thats why he knows so well 😆
It's like you guys are reading my mind! I needed a video JUST LIKE THIS! And again very well spoken and very thought out review. The videos are getting better and better! Keep up the good work!
Maybe we can read your mind....🤨 Glad you like the video, Michael. We are always working on improving our DIYs and its nice to hear our efforts are recognized. Thanks for watching!
Just had this same problem! Wish i had this great video at the time when i was fixing it. for me i did not have to remove the steering fluid housing, i was able to still get to all the bolts!
Nice Charles, it is doable with some time and patience to slip the bolts out! We wanted to show people the slightly more straightforward method, and this way incase you have to service the cooling system and p-steering system you know how!
@@fcpeuro I like how you point out the plastic serpentine idlers and camshaft phasers and oil leaks.
This helps wrap multiple repairs into one! Txs
👍
Great explanation of how to perform this task. Thanks, Kyle.
You're welcome, G Kelly!
A large part of why I finally switched from Acura to Mercedes is because of fcp. Had tons of homework to do, & you guys consistently had exact info available that I needed (also on e90/e92's). Just noticed this leak on my c207 & feel good about getting into it this weekend. I can't rebuild an Acura transmission, or rebuild a $2,000 vsa modulator but I can handle some fluid drains & gasket replacements. Also, looks like I only need to remove my belt & hose connecting thermostat to radiator. Cam sensor (I believe) is more obstructing than my power steering res. M272.988 3.5L. Thank you!! Respect!!
That's really awesome to hear, RothBeyondTheGrave! Let us know if you need anything!
@@fcpeuro already ordered what I need for this job, but I'll be back for more! Stay up!
As has been mentioned by @ReMark, replace the entire oil cooler assembly or replace all of the gaskets. When you buy the oil cooler assembly you get the assembly, gaskets and an oil filter. The job does require you to drain the coolant and the oil. If your car is ageing, it's also time to replace the thermostat, belt, idler pulley and belt tensioner. Replacing the oil cooler requires removal of all of these parts anyway. It's easier than fiddling with the power steering reservoir and all of the gaskets should be changed at the same time or you will have to return to do the job again for the gaskets you didn't replace.
Excellent info! When the gasket is really bad, it will leak oil into the expansion tank as well. Then some shop tell you it's a blown head gasket.
Good point, Tiku! Thanks for watching!
@@fcpeuro I had this happen on a family member's 211 without an external oil leak from the oil cooler. When I went to replace a leaking cam phaser seal I had to remove the oil cooler and found the gasket disintegrated slightly, and connected that with the red particles I saw in the coolant expansion tank. I thought it might be an incompatibility with the coolant the body shop put in there... Needless to say it has MB blue in it now and has been fine since.
Excellent video. Step by step with a tools list as well as captions within the video. Technician was well spoken and easy to understand. Thank you for your talents.
We'll let Kyle know how much you enjoyed him hosting!
Great job! I'm replacing the thermostat and belt tensioner and pulleys on my E550 M273 this weekend. You saved me a ton of time by recommending removing the auxillary fan assembly. Not much room with V8. Love the W211 content lately. FCP is a great resource for the DIY wrench. Thanks Again.
Mark Coomber , I agree, I have a W211 E500 and I am loving all the how to's for it!
@@Okie-Tom Probably need a radiator too, mine does at 150k. Do that and new hoses.Harmonic balancer and tensioner also going in.
Nice video Kyle. I've got an '07 230 Sport with the M272 engine, now at 87K miles. I'm going to replace the oil cooler gasket, and think it'd be good to just replace the power steering reservoir with a new one for good measure.
Thanks, Vic. Glad you like the video! Definitely a good idea to replace the power steering reservoir as preventative maintenance. Nice car!
@@fcpeuro OK, so now have new PS reservoir and gasket on hand. Last night I did a look-see review in prep for this job. I noticed that there's no circlip present on the suction tube. Is this common to see because all other videos I've looked at make note of this circllip. Looks to me like mounting the new reservoir and gasket alone should be OK, but I'd like your opinion before disassembling. Thanks.
@@Aardvark49 Without it you are relying on the friction fit of the reservoir o-ring
.
If you were to remove it and put it back without the clip it will leak
. Some cars have clips that will be extremely dirty, almost black and hard to see, that could be the case here. www.fcpeuro.com/products/mercedes-power-steering-reservoir-retainer-genuine-mercedes-0009941903
thank you for being a great Kyle like we all should be haha
It would been nice if you stated the torque spec, it would been elevated the video and procedure to professional level, never the less keep up the good work guys!
great video. going to tackle the job on my 2008 e550 m273 v-8
Thanks, Warren! Let us know how it goes!
Good video ,,,just to let you know ,,this job can be done without removing the power steering reservoir and the coolant reservoir , which saves a lot of time and trouble. Simply use a small diameter wobble extension with a T30 socket bit.. you need to remove the p/steering reservoir cap to get clearance to access to one bolt. Use a magnet to pull the bolt out ,,,and use gum or blue tac to hold the bolt when replacing it.
Although it is good to see how to remove the other things as well.
Thanks for the tips, LE544! Glad you liked the video!
Great video....my 2011 c300 has oil in the reservoir...hope this is my problem 👌....great video
Did this several months back on my 07 W219. Didn't pull the power steering reservoir or remove the fan assembly. Had to replace the VVT magnet so I resealed the oil cooler adapter and oil cooler to adapter housing to prevent any leaks. Used FPC Euro for all my parts.
Thanks for your support, Kyle!
You are great teacher.
Fun and informative video! Thank you very much!
Thank YOU John! We appreciate the love
How about a wobble extension instead of T27? I am too scared of stripping the bolt head.
Great detailed video.
16:49 that fleet data logging haha
There is a 46mm Nut holding the oil filler housing to the lower mechanism and so since the cooler is attached cant you just lift it out by removing the hose from the cooler and in that way you can avoid relocating the power steering reservoir....In that way also you can replace the seal at the bottom of the oil filler tube as well
Thanks alot .. if u could do diy about the balance shaft for the same engine and whats the difference between balance shaft sines and magnets and sensors camshafts
The most common leak I see on M272/M273 is an oil filter assembly gasket. It leaks even more than the oil cooler. I always replace both at the same time.
I really wish I did. Like a fool, I only did cooler last oil change cuz filter housing was still dry. Not anymore! Something to add to this oil change along with thermostat while I'm in there
He said couple of teaspoons of coolant lol
Nice job 👍🏽
What I think you were saying at 5:57 is "relatively simple compared to a &^*&*%! Audi!" and I couldn't agree with you more. When I replaced the serpentine belt of my W212 E350 for the first time after years (decades) of Audi ownership, there was a light from above and angels were singing. Soooooo much easier on the Merc. Like they'd designed it to be replaced or something.
So, no torque spec, just snug?
Or a little tighter than snug?
How about a list of torques and part numbers.
I would just do the oil filter housing and not touch the PS system. Oil filter housing gasket will fail as well.
Great video. Do you have any video on how to replace an oil cooler gasket on a 2014 CLA250 Sedan? I greatly appreciate if you do. My situation is that there's an oil leak from my CLA250, and oil is going to the coolant reservoir. I never had this issue since I bought the car in 2014. Only three weeks ago I brought the car to get the coolant reservoir replaced and got the front brake pads replaced for a total of $2800. I didn't drive the car for one week because I went on vacation. But when I returned home and drove the car, I can clearly see the oil leak mark on the driveway. I asked the mechanic who did the work, and he diagnosed it as a blown head gasket, and that I shouldn't be driving the car because "it's dangerous". It felt suspicious at that point. I told him straight up that I am not paying $8,000.00 for another job. I searched the internet for "how to replace an oil cooler gasket on a 2014 CLA250 Sedan" to no avail. Thank you in advance for your response. My location is Pacifica, California, USA. GOD bless and thank you to anyone with a good heart and an honest character who'll respond to this.
Hey there pbcone! With your M270 engine, there is a real possibility that there could be an issue of coolant mixing with the engine oil due to a head gasket issue. The first thing we'd recommend would always be anything that can 100% confirm a diagnosis; there are a ton of inexpensive at-home tricks you can use to test for a bad head gasket, from color-changing paper test kits that aim to detect exhaust gasses in the coolant reservoir, to similar combustion leak detector kits. If those can verify your head gasket issue, you'd at least have a compass.
The engine oil filter housing may be worth investigating, and isn't too tricky to get to. However, I'd also keep the transmission cooler in mind as a slightly less-obvious option. There's a cooler mounted on the filter housing for your DCT, and if the internal seal has failed for this, it could be your source of oil and coolant mixture. If you haven't noticed any engine oil decrease, I'd look into this.
For reference and if this is your issue, the replacement transmission cooler is 2465010501. The seal is 0229977845 (and is one-time use, so any time the cooler is removed it must be replaced), and you'll also want two of 0229977945 to round out the reseal. The new housing/cooler combination should include a new filter, but if not, the filter is 2463772300 and the O-ring it uses to seal is 0229978045.
The four bolts that hold the cooler to the transmission are torqued to 8nm. Make sure you keep in mind though, Mercedes recommends that the cooling system is drained to create minimal spillage when you disconnect the coolant lines from the cooler. You'll want some new coolant on-hand, and you'll also want to make sure you top off the transmission after a service.
Again, double-checking to rule out the head gasket prior to another service is wise, but it may be a location worth investigating to remedy your leak!
Let us know how it goes. Good luck!
What tool did you use to stop the tensioner? What hex mm size was it?
I’ve always just used a long snap on hook to take the C clip off the PS reservoir without having to move the coolant tank 🤙
Brownballers562, very valid method, just takes a little finesse 👍💪
FCP Euro you got that right 🤙
Did you need to bleed air from the cooling system since it was open?
Is it harder to do on a 09 clk550? Mine is leaking 😩
Thank you for professional video! I was just wondering if you would recommend an easier way to empty the coolant tank from liquid? Would using a siphon pump work? Thank you,
Needed this for a v8
Noted!
Is there also a trasmition oil cooler in these cars or there is just one for both engine and transmition?
Nice video like always, cuestión how much cost that work???
My car is a w220 engine. Is there a oil cooler kit
I have a v8 is it worth doing this myself or should I take it to the dealer. Not sure what the cost is to do this service.
And the torque settings for the bolts for the oil cooler was how many nm exactly?
What is the torque spec. for the oil cooler bolts and the pump reservoir . Important to know.
Oh come on! I’d like to see you change the typicality pre 2011 OM642 engine oil cooler gaskets. I wonder if you can beat my 1:07:18 record?
Does the OM642(06'-09') uses same oil cooler type, and does it has same leaky gasket like the M272
Would that cause A/c issue?
a torque wrench would be useful for this work
I'm getting a similar slight oil smell after I drive on my W212 2014 E350 4Matic Sport. Shouldn't it be the same, due to the use of the same V6 with more power. Unless they changed the "plastic" seals?
What about using AT-205 Seal? I'm sure the gaskets hasn't been replaced in 70K miles, although it has been very well maintained with proper A+B services. B service just a month ago. (It also concerns me when one of the most reputable Mercedes Service centers doesn't reset the service computer after a B Service. All fluids, filters and oil was serviced)
To sum up: My Lexus ES350 doesn't have any smell whatsoever after driving .. I was wondering if the Mercedes E350 oil smell is just age and common? It smells like oil/mixed with brake dust. (Description) Just wondering if that is just typical from this engine?
Dont mind me, I'm just that random guy peaking through the double doors.
It has two gasket up down
How much torque wrench you need??
No replacement of o-ring on ps filler?...jc
SUPER!!!!Th.
How many miles check oil calling
Great video...Need a lot of patience eh?...jc
Patience is key! Glad you like the video, JC!
I'm have jet oil Im think hose conect oil filter is close the termost is lot Im was fixe sensor . Magnet balance I'm have 350 ml 2006 is old I 'M WAS FIXE THE COOLER GASKET I'M THINK NEED REMOVE CHECK AGAIN THANK
Hi there,
What about the oil cooler housing? do i have to remove anything additional or same procedure.
Also would it be possible if i do the job without removing the oil and coolant and just juck up the front of the car so car lean back and oil and coolant doesnt leak?
You might be able to do that, but its probably best to just drain the oil and coolant.
I did this job last weekend and I replaced the gasket at the crank case. Now I’m seeking a small amount of oil in the coolant reservoir. Does that mean the gaskets didn’t seal or is it that some oil got into the ports when it was opened?
Hi Erik, it's definitely possible some oil got into the ports when it was opened. I would keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get worse!
Yes it is probably just left over oil from the job or before...clean it out with rags or paper towels ,,,and then monitor it , it should gradually become less and less with time.
you definitely don't want mayo lube in your engine but a little oil in coolant will make the pump seal last longer
how did you know it needed replacing....visible leak or does it throw a code?
Shaun Salley no code , take a clean towel and wipe under the oil cooler , any oil stain means you have to replace it
Does FCP have a DIY shop that enthusiasts can go to and work on their Mercedes with FCP experts overseeing their work ? If not , WHY ???!!!!
When can we get some e63 work
very soon, Kyle has some projects lined up for his personal E63 that we will be shooting soon!
I don't really understand, why do you need to remove the power steering pump reservoir? I meany, yes, that bolt on the bottom is in a stupid place but it's possible to take them out without even touching the reservoir. A lot of unnecessary work...
And ignition coil ignite
Hi I have a 2007 e63 amg and I’m planning on resealing the upper and lower oil pan gasket I have a few issues before I decide to do the job. One is if I drop the subframe is there anything special I how depressurization of the hydraulic system and if I can skip that step. Also is there anything I have to do to avoid damaging the air struts. Also is disconnecting the the steering column involve any special tools?
No lube on the gasket?.....jc
Another symptom of a bad cooler gasket is oil in your coolant reservoir...
You’d think Mercedes would be made with better materials…lines you can’t touch or they break, where the line connects breaks off,…etc. 1 project turns into 4 just bcoz you breathed on them smh
spare parts Mercedes-Benz 350 Black engine
I need fanRadiator ac radiator bully pcv And another

How much this
Thank you
If you need more information about shows a number I can send you
Comebackkkkk.... oil filter housing is warped. Thing will leak again in no time. Do the complete housing next time
what do mean it's warped... is it made of plastic or was yours defective ??
I changed the gasket and mines still leaking. How can you tell if the housing is warped?
