When you trust someone else to take care of your car, can you trust that they're not taking you for a ride? Our undercover investigation reveals ripoffs at a popular oil change chain. We're going in for the advertised $19.99 oil change, but you won't believe the charges we end up with. And did they even do the work? I live in Norway. I went to my local Car Mechanic and asked for an oil change. He asked me when it was changed last, and if the filter also was changed. He then told me "come back when you've driven another 2000 miles and we will change it for you, it's still good"
I came back after 2000 miles, and he asked me if I wanted to see when he changed so that I could do it myself one day if I wanted, but he would gladly change it for me always if I wanted.
    I now work there.

Anyone wishing to learn, practice, or even enjoy the love of simple cars, get a pre 2000 model. pre pollution mostly. Think classic not plastic, well not quite but more or less. I've always done my own maintenance. A few years back, my brakes started to squeal, so there was some urgency to change the pads. I bought a set and changed them that evening. While I had the wheels off, I noticed that the tyres were getting close to the end as well, so after putting in the new pads, I took it for new tyres the next day. The mechanic raised it on the jack, appeared to look behind the wheel, and said "Your brake pads need changing." I asked how bad they were, and he said "They're completely shot" (having driven all for 20 miles!)
Needless to say, somebody else got the job of changing my tyres.

I’d HIGHLY recommend that everyone take a community collage course on basic automotive repair. You don’t have to be a pro, but it teaches you the basics to protect yourself from rip offs like the ones in the video. I’ve owned dozens of cars over the years, and have called out so many mechanics trying to rip me off, I lost count! Because it gives the rest of us a bad name. You ever went above and beyond to make sure a car was done right, the whole time the customer is making an angry face at you and judging you because they think you're ripping them off.
Just yesterday a lady came in for a headlight bulb and her brake pedal went to the floor with no stopping power applied. Replaced her bulb and checked the brake fluid. It was empty. She refused service, so I at least topped it off and pumped the brakes a bit to get the warning light off and get somewhat of a pedal. She then loaded up her kid in the car seat and drove off.

Actually, this kind of things are pretty common in Japan too thoguh most customers don't know. So, basically, I usually does most maintenance by myself. But, I have to ask some shops to do legal vehicle inspection once in 2 years in Japan though we can do it by ourselves though it is not really feasible for those who have a job. Only in such cases, I need to argue with the shop mechanics or sales persons not to do anything unnecessary things to pass the legal vehicle inspection. It is really troublesome... Also, in the cases in the video, the shop charged several hundred dollers but in Japan such shops charges several thousand dollors. I also used to live in the US before but number of such shops are fewer than those in Japan as long as I know...

  • @AntonyFantano

Things have changed a lot in 8 years. Working at valvoline we get paid by the hour and show you the fluids or a slide shows of services you need done and explain it. You can’t just walk in and just say yes to everything for the sake of dramatic development then question it after the services are done. There are cameras everywhere watching you as you work with microphones. There is an average you are expected to sell every month but there is no incentive for doing so. All the prices are set. If you’re going in to pay the least just say to the person you just want the cheapest oil nothing else and they will leave you alone and if they don’t just say it’s too expensive for you and they’ll let you leave. And most of the time if you ask where coupons are we will just help you find it. No one is holding a gun to your head. Stop slandering technicians just like anything else there are good and bad.

Even if a fluid looks new, if its been 80k miles and the transmission was never services, and it requires a service at 80k, we recommend it. This being based off of manufacturers recommendations. We generally looked over the vehicles fluids, judged them by color or smell, then checked the intervals using carfax and our own records, then went to make sales. Occasionally we didn’t need to check intervals because the color was extremely bad, but almost all of the employees got real pissy when upper management began to nag us for not making as many sales. Why are we going back and forth about oil change time....none of this matters. The point is an oil change is simple and anyone who owns a car (minus disability) should be at least able to
      Change oil
      Change tires
      Change filters

I complete my own oil and oil filter changes on my '38 Chev coupe and my '67 Chev C-10 stepside pickup truck. Since i don't have a "lift," I have to use ramps to raise up the front end for access to the oil drain plugs. A tight squeeze, but at least I know that the cost will be only for the supplies, and I don't have to worry about screw-ups or outright fraud from oil-change shops.
I took the truck to Econolube for lubrication several years ago. The oil was changed, but the technician failed to tighten the drain plug properly. Later that day while parked nearby in a large box store parking lot, I noticed a large puddle of oil beneath the truck. After checking the problem (a loose drain plug), I tightened it and added oil required to bring the level to the proper mark on the dipstick. Econolube or other oil change companies will never touch these classic vehicles again.

CycleCruza I know right. A pep boys told me I needed a left tie rod when I didn’t actually need one. Other garages can just screw your car up. I had my 2001 Acura TL serviced at a garage in the city and came out with an exhaust leak. How did I get an exhaust leak after I had my wheel bearings done? I mean that’s nonsense. The mechanic worked on my car acted like he didn’t know. Worst part is, the shop didn’t even tell me there was an exhaust leak before they brought out my car. I’m working on my own car next time. These mechanics are mediocre.

    • @JamesSmith-lt5zz

NissanSucks99xVT well they may have loosened a header bolt so it would leak eventually and have you come in to change the exhaust gasket. or could be a coincidence it was about to rattle loose. and mechanics suck today because everything is done with computers now. there's very few old school mechanics left. they plug in a computer it tells them what to change. they have another computer for the repair and tells the step by step with video and pictures on how to change it. so it's not very hard to become ase or nase certified anymore. almost no cars are repaired anymore that don't have a obd1 or 2 sensor under the dash anymore. they started those like 25 years ago

Had some dealings like this with a Goodyear place saying the battery was low. My sister said replace it. They broke a piece of metal off the car. Tried calling around places to find replacement part, no luck. Manager said he would drive himself to pick up part, never happened. He said they would pay for rental. Took several days to get part and fix it. I was told over the phone higher ups weren't going to pay for rental after they said they would. When I picked it up, employee said she heard what happened and felt it wasn't right since she heard they would pay for it and didn't...so she gave me the keys and said she wasn't charging me for the oil change or battery. Still had to pay for the rental. They tried to tell me the shocks needed replacing too when I had it in for brakes. Car still rides fine.

I kept a close watch on the oil level for the next 1300 miles. Guess what my oil level never went down at all. This tells me that I was being scammed about the rear seal! Will I go back HELL NO!
