I came back after 2000 miles, and he asked me if I wanted to see when he changed so that I could do it myself one day if I wanted, but he would gladly change it for me always if I wanted.

I've always done my own maintenance. A few years back, my brakes started to squeal, so there was some urgency to change the pads. I bought a set and changed them that evening. While I had the wheels off, I noticed that the tyres were getting close to the end as well, so after putting in the new pads, I took it for new tyres the next day. The mechanic raised it on the jack, appeared to look behind the wheel, and said "Your brake pads need changing." I asked how bad they were, and he said "They're completely shot" (having driven all for 20 miles!)

Actually, this kind of things are pretty common in Japan too thoguh most customers don't know. So, basically, I usually does most maintenance by myself. But, I have to ask some shops to do legal vehicle inspection once in 2 years in Japan though we can do it by ourselves though it is not really feasible for those who have a job. Only in such cases, I need to argue with the shop mechanics or sales persons not to do anything unnecessary things to pass the legal vehicle inspection. It is really troublesome... Also, in the cases in the video, the shop charged several hundred dollers but in Japan such shops charges several thousand dollors. I also used to live in the US before but number of such shops are fewer than those in Japan as long as I know...

In Europe you get a bill on which they need to wright down the date, the type of car, platenumber, and how much km. the work has been done, and even the mecanic has to sign his name under the bill, so they never can say they didn´t work at yr car.
Things have changed a lot in 8 years. Working at valvoline we get paid by the hour and show you the fluids or a slide shows of services you need done and explain it. You can’t just walk in and just say yes to everything for the sake of dramatic development then question it after the services are done. There are cameras everywhere watching you as you work with microphones. There is an average you are expected to sell every month but there is no incentive for doing so. All the prices are set. If you’re going in to pay the least just say to the person you just want the cheapest oil nothing else and they will leave you alone and if they don’t just say it’s too expensive for you and they’ll let you leave. And most of the time if you ask where coupons are we will just help you find it. No one is holding a gun to your head. Stop slandering technicians just like anything else there are good and bad.
This is a perfect example if "you need something done, learn it, practice it, and do it yourself".

All of those things are so simple a child can do it. I mean you dont HAVE TO but it will save you loads of money over your life
@Q M V I mean all of my grandparents did there own oil until the day they died so 😂😂
Parents should also teach kids the difference between “there” and “their”.
I complete my own oil and oil filter changes on my '38 Chev coupe and my '67 Chev C-10 stepside pickup truck. Since i don't have a "lift," I have to use ramps to raise up the front end for access to the oil drain plugs. A tight squeeze, but at least I know that the cost will be only for the supplies, and I don't have to worry about screw-ups or outright fraud from oil-change shops.
I took the truck to Econolube for lubrication several years ago. The oil was changed, but the technician failed to tighten the drain plug properly. Later that day while parked nearby in a large box store parking lot, I noticed a large puddle of oil beneath the truck. After checking the problem (a loose drain plug), I tightened it and added oil required to bring the level to the proper mark on the dipstick. Econolube or other oil change companies will never touch these classic vehicles again.
That's why I do all my maintenance myself if possible.
When I was young and broke, I got ripped off by places like this. Makes me angry because I was struggling to make rent and I just wanted to make sure I could keep my car going. Thanks for this report.
buy a book and do it yourself ,
Megan Makeuptosh......That's the real problem......this does not just effect people who can afford it.....they usually rip off people who are just trying to get back and forth to work and have no extra money to buy the owner a 70 thousand dollar Range Rover......he should be jailed.
they did that to me i had to pay $487
@@belladonnanightshade2332 You need more than just a book you need tools also, and for some people they want that peace of mind knowing the job was done right to avoid catastrophic damage.
@@Promethium666, I know females who went to classes that im sure were free to learn basics of mechanics , my brother did his own exhaust , yes over the years I have gathered quite a lot of tools , I fixed my washing machine lots of times rather than pay someone as they charge a call out fee plus job price , and its amazing how easy it is as long as you always pull the plug from the wall , imust stress that , I have added electrical sockets switching off at the mains , the only thing I wont touch is gas as in gas not petroleum fuel , I leavethat to my brother or If its the boiler a company , failing that get to know the price of a job and find a garage that's nearest to that price and stick with that garage , if you don't know things you are at the mercy of rip off merchants , I had to get the tv aerial guy to go up on roof and replace the lnb box and cable , cost me £200 and that was only replacing half the cable , I got him to bring dish down and attach to side of house ,which was the only reason I took him , I know the cost of a roll of cable , I bought a roll of cable and did it myself again and it cost £20 , but im ok going up a ladder 20ft not the roof , I don't mind paying for a job but I hate getting ripped off , of course there are jobs that is just too big and you cannot get out of paying but the more you know and small jobs you can do yourself the more you learn to do other jobs, lots of helpful videos on youtube but check more than one post and libraries are good too , tobe fair my dad had tools but I now have more than he ever had
i neither own a car nor live in Canada. why was this recommended to me and more importantly why did i watch it all the way through?
Same haha
But did you learn something? Don’t trust those quick lube places.
same... but i sent this vid to my dad and now hes all serious watching the video lol..
everyone watches shows from other countries, especially that type of detective-style show, no matter the subject
U want likes?
When go to jiffy lube or any other place. Make sure they put the right milage in computer. If they put the wrong milage and make the reading higher it can affect your insurance!!
please continue to expose EVERY shop u can! GOD bless u
Even dealerships rip you off. I got ripped off at a Lexus dealership for service that was not needed. It's tough ti find honest mechanics.
That's one benefit of being Hispanic honestly. We know most of our mechanics like brothers so you know for sure they won't rip you off. If anything we get deals as well
CycleCruza 600 DOUBLE ARRRRR!!!
Eric is correct, I know a good 3 friend mechanics who I reach out to whenever I need advice on something with my car or when I don't know exactly the cause of a problem with it
CycleCruza I know right. A pep boys told me I needed a left tie rod when I didn’t actually need one. Other garages can just screw your car up. I had my 2001 Acura TL serviced at a garage in the city and came out with an exhaust leak. How did I get an exhaust leak after I had my wheel bearings done? I mean that’s nonsense. The mechanic worked on my car acted like he didn’t know. Worst part is, the shop didn’t even tell me there was an exhaust leak before they brought out my car. I’m working on my own car next time. These mechanics are mediocre.
NissanSucks99xVT well they may have loosened a header bolt so it would leak eventually and have you come in to change the exhaust gasket. or could be a coincidence it was about to rattle loose. and mechanics suck today because everything is done with computers now. there's very few old school mechanics left. they plug in a computer it tells them what to change. they have another computer for the repair and tells the step by step with video and pictures on how to change it. so it's not very hard to become ase or nase certified anymore. almost no cars are repaired anymore that don't have a obd1 or 2 sensor under the dash anymore. they started those like 25 years ago
Never stepped foot in a mechanic shop I’ve always done it myself or a trusted mechanic that works on his own
most brake, coolant and power steering fluid is good for 5 years from the factory .
This happens at almost every automotive shop. Finding honest mechanics that know what they're doing is difficult.
Oh they know what they're doing
Not really if ur in the industry yeah we all have a few tricks to make a couple extra bucks like when a new customer comes in for a bulb we change it in like 3 minutes let it sit for 30 min then get paid for 30 min of work little scams like that to new customers is common but if u go to a shop over and over again youll get benefits rather than scammed
Not the shop I work at
No it's not. People just don't want to pay for quality work. If you car about your car so little that you'd bring it to one of these places, then it's on you.
@Larry Capoya Yes Larry. Of course my 80 year old Grandma DESERVES to get ripped off for not changing her headlight bulbs herself 🤣🤣
Don't forget the turn signal oil, it's need to be changed every 2 weeks
Are you jus trolling
What do you think!
i think im gonna have to change my oil
+Cristian Lopez and the headlight oil..
and the snake oil...
Thank you for the heads up 😊
Many dealerships do the same thing, especially charging you for work they haven't done. Thieves.
Hidden camera specialist that guy would be a scary friend to have
@Lzb Lmvm Yo you hop in the bath and I'll hand you the toaster ok buddy?
only if you are doing something wrong, only unethical people would be afraid of that
I'm dead hahaha
Lzb Lmvm ...
lol
I finally started changing my own oil this winter. It didn't take 10 minutes, but it was cheap and I know it's good stuff.
Wish i could do my ram. Sadly its a $2500 ticket where i live and $10,000 if i do my peterbilt. So im forced to pay these scammers.
Don't forget, no matter the year make or model of vehicle, it takes 75w-90 gear lube😂
@@arcticfox5118 why
@@arcticfox5118 What horrible place do you live???
King Tonberry!!
Honestly, this is why everyone should just do their own maintenance. A lot of it is super easy, yes some require special tools, but RUclips is a hell of a drug
Had some dealings like this with a Goodyear place saying the battery was low. My sister said replace it. They broke a piece of metal off the car. Tried calling around places to find replacement part, no luck. Manager said he would drive himself to pick up part, never happened. He said they would pay for rental. Took several days to get part and fix it. I was told over the phone higher ups weren't going to pay for rental after they said they would. When I picked it up, employee said she heard what happened and felt it wasn't right since she heard they would pay for it and didn't...so she gave me the keys and said she wasn't charging me for the oil change or battery. Still had to pay for the rental. They tried to tell me the shocks needed replacing too when I had it in for brakes. Car still rides fine.
Can we talk about how poor the censorship for the former employees was😂
I have no idea who they are. 🤔
Alex Collazo if the ceo where to have saw this video, he/she would have easily recognized the em
Carson Brown I think it was more-so to not discredit their current businesses based off them doing shady work in the past.
I'm so hungover
Some clowns that quit their minimum wage job hoping to cash in on RUclips fame.
Not a single time did an oil drain pan go under any of those cars.
Power Out. That was the trusted person making sure nothing was wrong with the cars before the experiment.
Wow. I always just assumed these places didn't know anything. I didn't realize they actually prey on people
This is why I only travel via magic carpet.
RalphsLegend Uh, you need your magic fibre restraightened and your floatation fluid changed. $69 for the fibre and $89 for the fluid.
Strììder Eclipse don't forget the magic genie lamp lube
Bernie Sandals of course how could I forget
RalphsLegend your thread is looking a little worn. I can replace that for ya $19.99!
Berrymango aka flying fish truu
The owner should be put on trial and charged with fraud. Simple as that.
@Keith bengermin dont bring race into everything. Your just giving yourself a reason to be pissed at everything
Keith bengermin you over here preaching about white America about a Canadian scam please get help, hatred is a disease
What does the American way have to do with Ontario?
Keith bengermin This is in Canada dude, what does being white or American have to do with any of this.
@Keith bengermin Lowest IQ comment ever especially when this video is about a Canadian company lol.
This is why doing your own maintenance is so worth it. I spent $50 on tools and can do my own oil changes that I know are done 100% right with the best oil I can find.
You can see the look on the kids face that he's lying ( nervous ). He should DEFINITELY be charged with fraud and theft even though the boss forced him too they should BOTH be charged. The investigators should go through all of their paper work with receipts and find every single customer and pay them back from how much the company stole.
3,000 dislikes are oil change employees
WeLikeBread now 4,000
newfiesig, exactly! They think they're disliking what's been presented on the video. Of course, who wouldn't? Not how its been presented.
HAHAH ... I like that ..

newfiesig they must feel like they're in a pretty bad world where 70k people like scams!
“So we did your oil change but it turns out you were low on blinker fluid so that total comes out to $219.00...Thank you, see you next time!”

Just had an oil change done on my 2003 F150. Was told I had a rear seal out. I said no there isn’t, that someone (my bil) sabotaged my truck. Just do the oil change. I did need new wiper blades and new air filter which I had replaced. Oil change got done and I left, checked my oil at 100 miles and had to put in2 quarts, I was thinking I may possibly have that leaking rear seal. I kept a close watch on the oil level for the next 1300 miles. Guess what my oil level never went down at all. This tells me that I was being scammed about the rear seal! Will I go back HELL NO! This was 5 min oil change in Terre Haute, In.

I'm not even a mechanic and I still fix everything on my own car lol
HazzardAllUltra I hate being a woman at the mechanic ... a single (divorced) woman. They do not listen, assume I have no idea what they are doing or what they say that I know sounds odd. Then if I say they need to be good with me because I am a nurse and the tide could be reversed, they laugh ... but I usually get a pretty good job at less than the original price!
