always refuse tow truck drivers who just show up, get your own
Not as easy to refuse, with a broken femur...Luckily, they are honest near me, and only charged $80...Got a customer for life. Anything I need towed, and I call James Jr( His dad retired)...
Call your insurance company first and find out where they want the car towed to.That is if it needs to be towed . kIf the vcar still rolls and the radiator holds water you probably can drive it.Slowly with flashers on. You might just drive it to your house until you talk to you insurance company . They may want to evaluate it first.
@@burtburt2263 I call AAA
tell me about it. I am an insurance adjuster and body shops and tow companies hold cars hostage. They even trick drivers right after they wreck to sign paperwork to get them to take it to their body shop. Its a big scam. Imagine being in your first accident, standing in the middle of the intersection waiting on police and all you want to do is just go home. The tow driver comes with a smile and says he will take care of everything for you. He has you sign paperwork right then and there while you are still upset and havent had time to research body shops. He then takes it to the body shop that they have deals worked out with and gets a piece of the action.
Believe it or not but most big name insurance companies are on your side. Its the body shops and tow companys that are the swindlers and tricksters. The body shops that are partnered with the insurance companies are among the best. We want our customers to be happy in the end so we only partner witht the best shops.
Also notice I said BIG name insurance companies. The little insurance companies are nightmares for their customers and take months to inspect your car.

I'm sure a lot of armed robbery suspects say the same thing.
nah it's an actual concern, people have families and things happen. Not sayng what they do is justifiable but it's apart of a bigger issue.
How is this not investigated and how is this legal.
That's why only smart and responsible should PLAN to have kids!! Yeah you're not supposed to raise a family on minimum wage. just to the closest wide spot on the road and figure it out the next day

I wonder how these towing companies would feel if, in addition to being fined, THEIR tow trucks were towed away for breaking the law? Hmmm. Towing fees, storage fees, the fine itself, loss of income, court appearance.....

I'm in the US and I've been in the bodywork industry for about ten years now, I have seen this done a few times and we confronted the customers about it and then contacted the authorities. Needless to say, the tow dudes lost their jobs and fined. what I'm seeing here just makes me sick to my stomach and severely angry.
Maybe the Cop should start writing tickets??
Instead of just giving a warning to everyone, or just letting them go!

The cop needs to stop giving these drivers breaks and ticket them every time they see them..
Most "nice" cops (or cops in a good mood) will actually give you a verbal warning, but that one who wanted to argue, if I was a cop there, I would have asked "are you seriously trying to push your luck?, you really want a ticket/fine?"
or the cops can help release the vehicle of poor victims who fall for this scamm ... the problem is the laws do not support intervention of police in such matters .. which is why scammers win ..
Why when he takes half their profits? Why do you think truck drivers behave like that? Your cops are cockroaches
@reshi p Not all of them, but most take cash where it gets to. There are some very good police men and honests, but it's very rare to run into a good, nice and honest man and if he'd thrived in business they always push them to ruin... It's very difficult to survive and stay honest and normal, there's a lot of pressure from all sides...

Why would you ever accept a tow from someone you never called...
Exactly my thought process
U didn’t call them, but they are there, that spells CROOK! Js!
most people are naive to the laws, with the operator claiming the company has a contract with the police. Isn't misrepresentation for gain illegal? Especially if you claim to be with the police?
@@1foolishcaribou195 they are not naive only to the laws, they are naive in general. People still tend to trust others, even when they know they just can´t trust anyone. But its easy and comfortable to let others help me, even if i don´t need their "help".

So glad they exposed these scammers. Im glad I got to share my story on this segment. Another tip for everyone in GTA area. if you get into an accident, and the car isn't drivable (such as mine) and a tow is available, and you choose NOT to take it, the cops can give you a ticket after a couple hours for impeding traffic or some BS. so your very first call should be to CAA or insurance and get a tow on its way. not only will you be protected by cops that pressure you (like mine did) can be kept at bay. safe driving everyone.

+Abdallah Timuroglu how did the car end up there in the first place? If you took it there, go to the court house literally down the street from them, and file a lawsuit or complaint. They cannot hold it hostage. If you signed a work order and the insurance isn't involved, you might need to speak with a lawyer as that can make things difficult.

Stop warning them. Give them a TICKET. The city needs money and as a result, you can drop property taxes.
they wont drop property tax, a fixed and reliable income for the gov, for variable income that is inconsistent. gov is money hungry
Both of you are right.. It's to much like right for both sides to be honest
The issue is every ticket they issue is a court case, eventually it just gets too impossible for the officer with 2000 cases a month to deal with them all, or they take too long and the ticket gets thrown out because it took so long and isn't a "fair trial".
City needs to start crushing these tow trucks instead of tickets and then city gets tax from new tow truck sale

This happened to my elderly dad 2 yrs ago. He rear-ended a car, minor accident. But the lady wouldn't get out of the car, and instead called a tow truck, who insisted he take my dad's car, even though both cars were totally fine. Dad, being 85, was nervous and complied. He didn't call me till later. When I talked to the tow truck driver, he said the car was in a lot, and that his people have to fix it. When I went there, the car was parked in the back behind so many cars, and he said you can take your car but we're not moving the other cars. I threatened to call the cops. Anyways, long story short, we finally got the car. So yes, be very careful with tow truck drivers.

AAA? This is Canada! LOL
The Hartford as well
I was in a accident back in 1995, and the officer asked who I would like for the tow, and I told him the body shop that I used, and that shop came right out, remember if you use a shop, they ( the police ) will try to work with you, otherwise use the police (Duty Tow), lots of areas, police duty tow is rotated so often between different shops, or they have regs regarding fees, etc..
I've only been towed twice in my driving life, both times were with CAA in Canada, and both times were free. Both times towed to my house, one of the times with almost 100km away, obviously they were accidents, one my engine blew and the other was with a flat and had no spare tire with me or flat fix kit
Those tows weren’t free
My son hit a deer not long ago, the tow bill was 800.00. I found out it is in how they write it up so insurance companies will pay. They list it as a "recovery" not a simple tow. After finding this out I called a different tow company and said I broke down and needed car to be towed home from same location to very near the location where sons car was towed. Was quoted 145.00.
The tow truck companies are committing Insurance fraud and getting away with it.
Is he alright?
That is quite a bit for the deer accident, and your broke down car, but as a tow truck driver myself people don't take into consideration the company has to bill for fuel, time and they have to have really good insurance due to some people having super nice vehicles and that way if they were to get into a wreck or something else happen they can cover the charge through insurance. I do agree some tow companies charge wayyyy too much, but that's why you do your research and see who is priced the best!
@@cardboardtruck1009 yes he was fine thank you for asking.
I know I am late to this, but I'm curious as to what the itemized charges, not the amounts, just the list of charges, were on the tow bill for the accident. Also, were the police the ones that called the tow company, or did you call them yourself? If the police called, it considered a non-consent tow, and the fees are usually higher then a "private" tow for a broken down vehicle. The term "recovery" can be very broad. The tow company I work for, in order for it to be considered a recovery, the vehicle must not be drivable, and has to be winched up onto the flatbed.
@@prestonlaston2981 being you tow, I have video up on it that you can look at.

In Australia, a tow truck must tow ti ot an impound lot until you or your insurance have nominated a body shop. Always call your insurance, as they will assign a tow truck themselves and take it to a body shop. Normally, its safer this way cause insurance company has a special cotnract with particular body shops
Always have your car taken to your home or to the tow lot.
Never have your car taken to where the tow truck driver says
Also call ahead to your insurance company and ask who their prefered providers are and keep that information with your registration and proof of insurance.
This is rampant in the US also. Always contact your insurance first if not injured. Let them handle it for you, that’s why you pay them.

The practice of holding a car until payment is common, our company does that as well, however, the way they go about it is sketchy... Normal tow fees are much lower, A normal crash call is 160.50 taxes included for our company, our storage is 25 a day, winch out is 50-100 an hour additional, if it goes to our shop you pay when you pick it up, including storage or you don't get it back and we file for title, we have to be paid for our jobs, however, I will tell you ahead of time if I will only be giving you the option to go to our shop (depends on the circumstances) usually at night I will only give you the option of going to my shop, In which case I will tell you and you can choose if you want to continue or not, and we will see if the police will allow it or if you are a road hazard and need to be towed either way, although a lot of times you also have the option to choose where you are towed to and you will pay when I drop it, the idea of just showing up towing the car to a shop and holding the car hostage with a 500-1000 dollar bill is dishonest and seems like it would be illegal.
Khôi Huỳnh yep he should had sued
I get the by-laws thing. But why wasn't this officer ticketing these drivers...
He probably did since they stayed and other guy ran. He probably their to wait for the other officers to show up and just scare away tows. Kinda like if a ambulance reaches the scene they have to wait for police to clear it before entering. there should not even be a conversation it should just be here is your ticket. That's what happens to everyday drivers when they break the law.
Make sure you always get a solid quote initially before allowing anyone to do work on anything, especially with a car. Get it in text or writing, then if they up the cost like this later and refuse to release your vehicle to you unless you pay, sue them.
Some year ago something like that happened to me. One time you car is hooked, the bill is done by the trick company, and not for you. Also, the truck driver said he was working for the loco police, and that statement was not true. I didn't know what to do, or where ask for advice, or good help.
If a tow company did this in California they would have their business license revoked.
uh huh..
dumbass this been happening for decades even in cuntfornia
yea that's true
My dad owns a company that tows tractor trailers and my cousin got in an accident last week in her car and the company that towed her made her pay more than he charges to tow a semi 45 miles. Their tow was very short and I drove the car the next day to shop so the car didn't even need to be towed and they charged her for storage. So this happens in America.
Actually most of this is against the law in the states now but the thing is most of this could have been avoided with a swift kick in the arse to a eager tow truck driver
I knew it! That male friend is more than a friend!!

i had that doubt too
Its sad that some tow truck companies give all of us a bad reputation. I don't try to ruin someones day I'm here to help you.
I used to run an auto body shop , and this is all true. I was always sure to help the people because the people were already having a lot of trouble , .the fines are not high enough and not enforced
imagine a government car got towed by these scammers LMAO
How in the world is that even legal? How can those businesses even operate?
"Legal" means nothing when there's no cops around.
Criminals have a free pass in Canada. I've been legally robbed for $5000 in the last 8 years in Ontario. You can't fight, you lose. Courts don't ever say a company was wrong. Even with evidence. You wouldn't believe how easy it is to get a judgement and wage garnishment. You cant do nothing, if they even tell you about it. I got my wages garnished with 2 days notice
Capitalism.
It isn't technically legal.
If your confused worried and don't know what to do just after a crash, just make sure you agree a price for a tow and the destination is your home (if that is possible). Once you have calmed down at home, and had a chance to call your insurance company and or found a reputable body shop to repair the car - then get it towed by them from your home to their shop for an agreed fee. Although it seems like double handling - actually towing is cheaper than paying over priced towing and storage and then waiting 90 days for over priced repair work. Certainly much cheaper than getting caught in scams like those shown. A tow fee in a city should be $100-$250 - if its more - be concerned
When I drove a wrecker in Memphis, TN wrecker companies had to meet a certain criteria to be on approved list and they were called in rotation by the police unless the owner wanted a specific tow company and the owner always chooses where it’s towed to.
This is why we have AAA .
We don’t get stuck nowhere...
The next videoes on autoplay for me is "The $445 SCAM at Mcdonald's-How AAA Breakthrough Towing is Cheating People of Their Cars and Money"
Planet Earth That’s a different company. AAA (just AAA, nothing else) is a subscription service that truly is useful to have. Locked car, dead battery, flat tire, anything. AAA is actually worth the yearly payment compared to what you’d pay for any of this otherwise.
@@JohnDoe-zq1ho Look for the AAA shield, or in the case of my employer for many years, the ACSC, Auto Club of Southern California with the AAA shield. We're trained, professional, and are held to a higher standard.
Canada doesn't have AAA
@@MiggyCR I thought they had CAA or something similar. Maybe not.
let me make this whole video simple: DONT ACCEPT A TOW THAT YOU DIDNT CALL FOR NO MATTER WHAT
Lol not to mention you should never pay for a tow truck. NEVER! Either use another car you or your spouse owns, or have a friend who owns a truck and or a trailer come help. That simple. Shouldn't even be a thing to get towed in my opinion I mean what's the point?
@@rileyesmay or have AAA
@@rileyesmay Many insurance providers cover the cost of a tow truck. Just call your insurance company when you get in an accident
@@ericmorgan372 NO! Just tow it yourself, then when the junkyard guys come to get the car from your house it is all free. And you get a hefty check from the insurance company too, I got at least $200 extra for my car just for towing expenses. They yes will pay for it, but you can literally make money towing it yourself
@@alexwood99 Look at my response to another guy above. Buying AAA isn't worth it unless you're a loner and don't know anybody, then it is worth it
This is Canada. But in the states, a tow truck place kept my car for five weeks. After that I called the Better Business Bureau. I got my car in two days...NO CHARGE!!
Awesome report
in my country, the netherlands, when you crash you call your insurance company. they send a tow truck to you free of charge and you can choose where you want your car to go. if you don't want to get it fixed you can take the damaged car home. If you want to get it fixed immediatly you can choose which repair shop they have to bring your car to. as long as it is whitelisted ( which almost every shop is) insurance will handle everything from there on, even a rental car is usually free of charge.
Jules
It’s like that where I live in the US. I’ve gotten into multiple accidents and I call police first the insurance second. “Free” tow for me yaaaaay!
Most people in Canada also have some sort of roadside assistance. It's just these tow trucks are literally there within minutes usually before the police because they sit on the shoulder of the highways illegally. So most people just accept their tows out of convince and regret it later on. These guys are also pretty intimidating too.
Yup, most insurance policies in Canada will cover the tow. You're also free to use whatever repair shop you choose, the insurance companies do have preferred shops they deal with. But you're under no obligation to use them and are free to use any shop you choose as long as they are licensed. You can even have a quote provided from a licensed shop and choose to do the repairs yourself, so long as you prove they are completed and do not exceed the initial quote.
same in America, as well as Canada
Jules It's the same in the US, and in Canada. These people got scammed.
Can people not sue in Canada or something? Sounds like that is one of those report it stolen and then sue them.
they're too nice
call the police and report it as being stolen
They tow truck drivers trick you into signing the work order. You can't sue because you gave them permission and accepted the terms and conditions of the contract without realizing it. Also, that 190 dollar ticket is garbage. It needs to be 1000 dollars for it to work. Each tow truck driver can make anywhere from 800-1500 per accident tow they bring to the body shop. Who cares about the 190 dollar ticket... it's still well worth it for the tow truck drivers to not follow the law.
sue cost more and it is you agree to have the service which is hard to defence.
In the states you can be shot for stepping on a an overhanging blade of grass on the sidewalk. In Canada you can't sue intill you have already been killed.
Excellent information!
thanks to this documentary I learned something today
So give them the damm tickets. Why warn over and they know it’s a law so more warnings.. cops are at fault also.
Tickets for a reason
nev ets I was thinking the same thing. Break the bylaw you get a ticket
It's probably because running a business isn't against the law...Especially when they pay their taxes. Funny we never hear of this problem at a strip club...
The bylaw is just recently introduced at that time period so they prefer educating them or warning them until the law becomes in full effective.
Also do you really want to deal with an accident and ticket 7 tow truck drivers at the same time? Some already fled when the cops showed up.
Armor23OnPatrol Nice try, all tow truck company’s and drivers were told about the law weeks before it was going to be enforced
@@Armor23OnPatrol I'm not sure how they do it in Canada but I live in Florida tow truck driver and they have us on a rotation system which the police control if there is an accident and they assessed the vehicle cannot be moved safely or driven then they call whoever is next in line that has already been certified by either the local police are handling it or the state police and by certified I mean everybody's IDs been ran that runs with them all the trucks of inspected to make sure they are safe proper impound yard must be established and all fees our uniform set buy them the state police or the County Police that's how you stop that crap real quick
Life hack: if a business holds your property or disappoints you, fire bomb their property from far away. Disclaimer: this is only legal in Nigeria.
Lol! Would a Molotov work?
+SVGamer Absolutely. 1 part oil; 9 part gas. Ingredients for a long lasting bonfire if you need to make on legally that is.

directions weren't clear enough I'm now in jail
+fba90130 well don't hit your car with a molotov. Parking lots don't burn but if your car and everyone else's car burns; class action lawsuit. $$$$$
strangely the tow truck drivers for the most part actually just lay it out how it is, that yes it's scummy, and that they got bills to pay. Most other scams don't ever disclose any information under any circumstances.
Nope. They didn't tell the guy straight up how much it'll cost and continue to hold his car for 90 days! That's not telling it like it is
@@missdaydreamss I’m talking about when they were on camera
It's so messed up that they try to take advantage of you as much as possible because they know you're a one time customer, not a repeat customer they actually need to satisfy. Heavy tow dealing with big rigs is even worse. They give you ridiculous pricing and obvious gouging knowing you have no choice
“I got kids to support”. Not my fault dude!!! 😂😂😂😂. Keep it in your pants and you won’t have that problem!!!

Lol I do it to every business on this show
My fiancé's dad got him AAA as a gift when he got his license and he just renewed it every year since. I always found it a bit of a silly expense since we didn't really drive that much until we were T-Boned. We were 30 miles from home at a doctor's appointment and the car had to be towed out of the intersection, held at a yard for a few hours, and then later towed to a different junkyard. We decided to junk it in the city it was demolished in but AAA would have towed it back home if it was salvageable for free. They also offered some coverage for the expenses of it all even though I was the passenger but the cars insurances covered it. I will NEVER question that bill again. We've since had our battery jumped on the side of the road late at night too. I haven't driven since the accident but he paid to put me on the account as well, just in case. I don't know if they have it in Canada but it really is a lifesaver.
This show is awesome.
