As a precaution you can place a piece of thin rubber under the plastic intake pipe, then if leaks occur the oil will exit down the outside of the turbo not leaking into the swirlmotor thru its connector. Also use the revised black rubber skal on plastic inlet.

So glad my Merc mech advised me to avoid these engines and the v6 petrols. I’ve got a R129 SL320 straight 6. He told me to avoid the V12 as it would cripple me financially. Wish I’d bought the R129 SL72
M112 v6 petrol was a tank. 272 was ok. Yes I’m not a v12 fan either. Sl 72 is something very special though. R129 with a m113 v8 is the best combo in my opinion
This vid gave me flashbacks of when I did the cooler seals on my R class. It was fortunate that I did it during furlough as it took me a couple of weeks (a lot of that was waiting for parts though). I found the previous owner had done the resistor mod to delete the swirl flap motor. I took the opportunity to reinstate the flaps with a new motor and an aluminium rod kit. The previous owner had also fitted a chineseium actuator to the turbo but I ordered a genuine refurbed one from the states. One little mod I added was I added a shroud made from an old drinks can to cover the swirl flap motor as even though I was replacing the turbo inlet seal, I have only ever known them to leak. The shroud is shaped to guide any oil that drips down behind the flap motor and into the V. I'd be curious to know if you have a definite fix for the red seal leaking?
What does a turbo replacement run to? I have the bucking issue you showed in the vid. At much lower revs though. Have fired the parts canon at it, well everything except a turbo.
An oil catch can circuit between CCV & turbo inlet would reduce substantially amount of oil that cascades down into valley from batwing turbo inlet seal. In my opinion, that is true source of most car om642's oil leaks. It soaks swirl flap motor, splashes all over turbo pedestal & then pools around oil cooler before draining through that weep hole in valley near bell housing. These issues don't really exist on 642s from Sprinters because they have a much better air intake system & larger oil pan that can accept 5 more quarts of oil. Every time I see another om642 oil leak video, I thank my lucky stars that I still have an om648 w211 on the road.
I am in Texas USA and on the subject of the OM642, it would be great to hear your comments on the Bluetec Settlement. I know that MB had to settle in the UK and Europe so I'm sure you're familiar with this. Thanks!

Hi Amazing tutorial, I had exactly the same problem with oil cooler seals, and also the same wear in the inlet manifold swirl flap arm. It was all fixed by a very competent local mechanic but I took it to Austria last year and the Turbo would cut out and would always reset when ignition switched off/on. I still haven't got to the bottom of this problem and wondered if you have any ideas! I was thinking maybe an Actuator or Map sensor but It's really just a guess. I have had the codes cleared and the only code I have now is 2783, which is friction of torque converter lockup clutch is too high. When I got home from Austria the following codes were stored. 2783 friction power of torque converter lock up clutch is too high. 0741 actuation of torque converter lockup clutch is not possible 129700 Dpf filter is defective (although soot/Ash lever zero) 14Ac00 Component B19/11 temp sensor upstream of turbocharger has internal fault 15FD00 Lower limit value of component B28/8 Dpf differential pressure sensor has not been reached. I have all the faults you’ve covered on my ml320, I had the oil cooler done a year and a half ago, at over a £1000 , but it would appear that my mechanic stitched me up it is now leaking water and a bit of oil not as much oil as before, so it’s lying in my driveway now doing nothing , being a pensioner I can’t afford to get it done again, I also had a new turbo fitted 4 years ago and the car started the kangaroo bit when I accelerated hard, but again couldn’t get anyone to diagnose the problem at the time, 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ but thanks for your video very informative cheers 🙏👍👍👍
I have the same surging intermittent as only does it every so often from what I have gathered from different forums it could just be the turbo actuator needing replaced and not full turbo unit?
Hi, I have a CLK 320 CDI and when accelerating it gave me the same jerk. Then driving along a slightly uphill road the car didn't go beyond 100 kilometers per hour, I thought it was the turbo actuator and I had to downshift with paddles on the steering wheel. A few months earlier between February and April I always found oil stains on the ground but the Mercedes workshop told me that it wasn't the oil exchanger but that the oil was coming out of the turbo and seeping from the plastic manifold in front of the turbo which I then changed. While for the tugging the workshop told me that it could be the exhaust manifolds, where it carries a double chamber and from here small pieces come off and hit the turbine wheel, but in any case they say that my turbine is still good, why did you change the turbine? Don't you have problems with the exhaust manifolds? I have to have the exhaust manifolds changed in September.
Mine does the very hard judder/kangerooing. Its quite intermittent. Its had a new accutator on it before i got it , would it be best to try a new one and if still not good then turbo ??
Great video! Do you have the parts list for the UK at all guys? The one you have listed is US and the site does not show the W164 ML280 CDI on their list. TIA 😊

I did all these jobs. my self. yes a biiiggg job. but the turbo is still running more than 90 000 km.. even when that turboproblem shows. but a restart and it all good for weeks...sometimes mnd. just love that strong engine. and love the torque.
Great video, only one I have seen which details the job and is uk based 👍 I had the EGR mapped out on my s211 om642, kangorooing went away, replaced actuator and exhaust back pressure sensor prior to that.
Well done guys. Mine 2011 350 CDI CLS have done 83000 miles and I believe at one point, I will have the same problem.
I believe that from 2010, Mercedes started factory-fitting the new upgraded (purple) oil cooler seals to all new OM642 engines, so you should actually be ok. At least with the oil cooler problem described here!
Nice job. Now I’m glad I have the OM648 inline 6. :) On that I have replaced the heat exchanger seal in half an hour.
I'm actually in a market for an 06' E320 CDI with an OM648. I would never consider this one what so ever, unless you don't care about your money:)
What a star !! Saved me 2 grand !!!! We can eat this month thanks for this super tip !
I just sold my 2012 W251 R350 Bluetec and I past your video to the new owner. Thank you for your great video!
I had a c350 cdi (276) before my C63 , both w204's , it was a great car , really pulled well , had to change the thermostat though at around 75K , they seemed quite common for failing
great content , really being enjoying it - thankyou
So glad my Merc mech advised me to avoid these engines and the v6 petrols. I’ve got a R129 SL320 straight 6. He told me to avoid the V12 as it would cripple me financially. Wish I’d bought the R129 SL72
M112 v6 petrol was a tank. 272 was ok. Yes I’m not a v12 fan either. Sl 72 is something very special though. R129 with a m113 v8 is the best combo in my opinion
@@sprautos
My straight 6 Petrol has been bomb proof as half of V12 used in many other cars.
Goodness, I have this repair ahead in my 2011 W212...
Well done, there not easy on an r class, it’s probably the hardest one along side a Vito. So well done, plus you’ve addressed loads of other issues.
What does a turbo replacement run to? I have the bucking issue you showed in the vid. At much lower revs though. Have fired the parts canon at it, well everything except a turbo.
Excellent Job & Very Professional Gentleman !
Great informative videos always keep it up mate u are getting better n better by the day
You are a professional person at what u do
Thanks, will do!
What a great video guys, my 221 is going to get the same treatment shortly. Nice tidy setup and professional.
Just done mine and some in house flaps delete, enjoyed the video, thanks.
What’s the pros of deleting the swirl flaps?
@@johnscott-collett2813i am wondering the same
I am in Texas USA and on the subject of the OM642, it would be great to hear your comments on the Bluetec Settlement. I know that MB had to settle in the UK and Europe so I'm sure you're familiar with this. Thanks!
you thing if they install a catch can, it will stop all that oil in the intake and going into the turbo?
After discovering your channel and watching the videos i will definitely drive my Merc from Leeds to this garage to get it serviced. Great job guys keep it up.
Very informative, i really like your attention to detail top notch. I like your aluminium linkage upgrade for the swirl flaps and inlet motor replacement, i would not get the same attention to detail at my local Mercedes specialist. Great work!
Great Job,and forward thinking for sure
Looks like the owner has neglected a lot of regular maintenance
All the best cheers Frank
Hi can u tell me where is the fuse for the glowplugs located?
What was up with turbo?
Had same issue, changed actuator and was good as new
Very informative video, we have a C350 AMG estate with the V6 engine which needs stripping down 😕 so looking to sell it on as now have a replacement car, wish we lived closer to you as would love to see it on your channel!
What's the issue with it, and what year? Looking for a 350 estate but want a face-lift model.
Cam chain we think, it’s a 2013, 62 plate
I think you should explain to the customers what you do and why you do it, like in this video.
They’ll appreciate you more for it.
Some do. Some don’t 😂 we try.
Great idea that Sam about putting all the particular job bits in a folder.
Presumably you restock after every job? 👍👍👍
I too do many jobs on Rover 75's which the owners don't even know about , we find many faults which they were not even aware of ⚠️
They will only thank you when they have not been let down by the car 5 years later 😅
Yes we replace as we go.
Haha we do all sorts don’t we that go unnoticed. But it’s a nice feeling for us when it’s back together knowing we have done what we can to make it the best we can.
Why did you change the turbo?
wow, excellent job !!! may I ask where do you get the flap bars/kits ?
RE the swirl flap rod, great when you get one over on the Manufacturer who won’t just sell the part you need but the whole assembly 😀
Haha it is good your right. You get a nice feeling knowing you’ve saved a good few quid
Did you do a full clean of the inlet manifold, looked full of carbon, or is it not recommended?
We do the best we can with the time we have. If we cleaned everything until it looked brand new it would double the labour.
Hi
Amazing tutorial, I had exactly the same problem with oil cooler seals, and also the same wear in the inlet manifold swirl flap arm.
0741 actuation of torque converter lockup clutch is not possible
129700 Dpf filter is defective (although soot/Ash lever zero)
14Ac00
Component B19/11 temp sensor upstream of turbocharger has internal fault
15FD00
Lower limit value of component B28/8 Dpf differential pressure sensor has not been reached.
Many thanks in advance, any info would be greatly appreciated.
I have a 2011 e350 with latest om642 engine 265hp.
250'000km and I changed only the thermostat
I think the latest iteration I have is much more robust, with all these problems solved.
But now at 260000km, I start to have some oil drops...oil cooler probably 😅
Will do it next holidays
BMW have swirl flap issues as well. I see there are kits to remove the swirl flaps altogether …. Any good for these Mercs?
Use heavy oil on om 642. Use 10w60 , or 15w40 weight oil minimum and you’ll be very happy with this engine. It’s after several engine seized.
..do you really reassemble with leaving the intake ports 80% clogged ? Video at 9:19
not everything is on video
Hi bud, I'm going to buy a 2010 Mercedes 350 cdi v6 with 60000 miles and full service history. When does this problem usually occur and are they generally solid cars. Just a bit worried because of the age.
Real masters of their craft -😎 great to see
Good Day, I am from RSA and do find a jerky ride on a random base. I suspect a turbo problem as you explained. No fault code,no white smoke, jerky ride once-off with hot engine and not again until engine is switched off, adblue deactivated and start and idle, smooth. 2014 ML 350 om 642 with 100 000 km.
Any advise?
Great work guys! Any chance of getting a list of parts /gaskets /orings like you have the magic folder listed here ? W211 owner with OM642 (225000miles ) perfect running condition never had the issue above but trying to stay in top of things always:)
The list is to long 😂 if you search the web there are lists knocking about
My problem that the Mercedes workshop suspects should be the one you show at minute 12:03.
Great videos, find myself watching them even though I don’t have a Mercedes 😅
You don’t need one to be part of our channel buddy. Welcome 🙏
At first, I thought that you were going to be working on a failed radiator/trans oil cooler which was what put paid to my E211 270 transmission - good old Valeo rads! Enjoyed this one though!
Yea used to do a few of those back in the early 211 days. Think I still have the test kit to test the trans fluid
@@sprautos The only time that I have ever traded in a car knowing that it had a fault - to the dealer that sold it to me 18 months earlier. That 2003 E class was the most unreliable car that I have owned!
I have this issue on my ML280cdi (OM642) I had the back pressure sensor fault, my dad who's an ex mechanic thought he'd sorted it. He's 74 bless him, if I'd known this earlier I wouldn't have had him do what he did to try and solve it. I'll be booking it in here and getting it sorted 😢wasted around £200 on parts as it's started again with the kangaroo hops 😩
Well it won’t all be a waste as if he has replaced the back pressure sensor we would have recommend that also anyway. Good on him for Giving it a go. And it caught me out the first time also.
Do you clean the swirl flap and valve ports from the carbon deposit?
Put Xado stop leak on radiator, it will help avoid oil and water mixture.
Love your content, keep up the great work!
I have the turbo symptoms.
But part in the turbo is broken?
I have the same surging intermittent as only does it every so often from what I have gathered from different forums it could just be the turbo actuator needing replaced and not full turbo unit?
Yea good chance it’s just the actuator. In our case we wanted a full turbo because of the high mileage of the car and to supply a good warranty
I have to have the exhaust manifolds changed in September.
im so glad channel found it in australia, your customers must be so happy ,what a bout a branch workshop in sydney australia ,we need one.
Mine does the very hard judder/kangerooing. Its quite intermittent. Its had a new accutator on it before i got it , would it be best to try a new one and if still not good then turbo ??
On my second one of these engines. Current whip has 28k on it.
Are the later oil seals more robust?
Lovely wafty engine with plenty of go
It’s a great engine plenty of power/torque
I would like to think so but time will tell I suppose.
@@sprautos absolute Merc fan. Not feeling the love for everyone/hybrid ones at all though
Great video! Do you have the parts list for the UK at all guys? The one you have listed is US and the site does not show the W164 ML280 CDI on their list. TIA 😊
What about the exhaust manifolds?they will ruin the new turbo
I heard about deleting this flaps and motor???
Will be taking my GLB to you guys for servicing soon
What is total cost of the replacing parts? I have some leakage somewhere of fuel on top messing around stuff. But then you need to get to fueljets its apart anyway so i consider this as well
Hello I have a vibration starting at 50mph and going through to 80mph. Looked at wheels and tyres, changed propshaft, diff and drive shafts, engine mounts, Any ideas, please? Thank you,
How much to have this/these jobs done,I think my cls 320 cdi has these issues (does the kangaroo) and loses power like the turbo isn’t boosting
Questions out the box. Can fabric a oil cooler out sited. And fuel filter out side. ? Love to know possible. For everyone. God bless 👍
Mick Australia 🇦🇺
At what mileage should the oil cooler seals should be done? Do they have a fixed mileage when they fail? Or they can fail any time? Big fan of 642
I haven’t found a pattern tbh, I’ve seen it at low miles and also high. So I would say it can happen anytime.
did mercedes fix the oil cooler seal? If yes at what year? Thinking of my 2012 R class
@@BarrySims-w7p the newer type (Viton) seals were fitted on cars after 2010 but as previously mentioned they can fail.
My previous Chrysler 300C with the OM642 engine had no problems but I have had to change the seals on my 2013 S Class with the same engine.
Thankfully Mercedes didn't fit the dreaded swirl flaps in all the OM642 motors.
My
Cut my teeth on these in the early 2010's....did sooo many exhaust manifolds on the 642 for metal pieces coming apart and mashing the turbo...That and the 272 balance shaft tear wearing off, Good old Crank/CAM correlation. I miss my days at a Mercedes dealer, Now I'm meddling with Audi...😂
Great video, I have learnt a lot, I spend too much time watching your videos! At what mileage do you usually see these parts fail? I got a CLS 219 with the OM642 at 73k miles. Would it be worth doing the jobs in the video as a prevention at some point or just wait till one of them fails and do the whole lot? Thanks.
I had an E320 straight 6 from new, put 200k miles on it without a single issue. Then I had TWO of these W211 V6 CDI's. They both had Oil leaks, Swirl Flaps. EGR Valves, DPF Filters, Turbo Actuator and eventually both turbos all replaced on these absolute shit boxes. Genuinely wouldn't take another one of these for free.
Great video, as always. Very interesting and informative. Keep them coming.
Alright pal any chance you could one of your reviews or overview of a OM646 engine please?
Hi after putting oil cooler the engine is vibrating why
A very strong engine, I had a 320 and now a 350, fortunately never had the oil leak issue (Yet), but the 320 did have the swirl flap issue!
Lovely to see Sam and John doing the job properly. Most garages would likely only tie the flaps open and make do.
I speak from experience!
Keep doing what you do, and as you do SPR.
See you in March.
👍🏻👍🏻
Adding $3k-$5k (AUD) to my mental calculations in looking at cars that have the OM642. Exactly how badly do I actually need that much torque...

What's the cost of the oil cooler seal replacement?
£1200 plus vat on this model. Parts and labour included
Nice job guys
