It flowed well and you must have cut plenty of fat out of it. Normally 1hr is too long for some viewers (not for me!) but in this case there were so many things to fix that it fully justified it.

I commonly change ATF and Filters with Fuchs Titan ATF 4134 on the 722.6 Transmissions which has been common on all rhe Mercs I've had with the exception of the Manuals. And always replace quantities then test at 80*C with a Dipstick.
Actually on the s500 w220 I had oon after buying it, it would go into limp mode if you floored it, but if you used the "Tiptronic" it would behave. I checked the ATF and found it to be just over a litre low on ATF. Topped it up and hey presto, no more limp mode! You live and learn....lol.

I used to have an old VW Karmann Ghia many years ago and all the Brakes were adjusted like that. On the Front it had 2 because of the Double Leading Edge Shoes but on one on the Rears. But on them it was fully locked then off until you could turn the wheel, it was usually 3-4 Clicks. A laborious job...lol. But I was young and loved it. Missed the bit about the tap. As an apprentice one of my jobs was to tap 2 holes in components 10 ba. A very good chance of snapping taps even using a tapping block. I was careful not to break any taps, but other appentices were not. We kept all components with broken taps until one day a sales person called with a machine. A tap o matic. I think it was called. It sparked eroded all the components with broken taps which were then accepted to gauge. The moral is find some one who can spark erode broken taps if you can’t remove and need to save the part.

When looking to buy my W221, I looked into why the original owner wanted the car.
99% of these cars are purchased to go to work, I noticed a common theme, Silver, black trim, std wheel bases, diesel, basic spec, always cheap, mainly used for airport runs etc, in general looked tiered.
On the other hand, black, long wheel bases, light trim, petrol, large engines, fully loaded, also went to work, maybe for a bank etc, but in general are better looked after.
The 1%, brighter colours, mid spec, new private purchase, maintenance done by the book, not on mileage.
They then slip, down the food chain, which makes them super desirable, however, owners in general are not prepared for the upkeep.
Hence multiple owners, also noticed maintenance history is no indication of condition.

My shop owner took me aside and advised that should I purchase one, between the cost of parts and the extra gadgets on an S class I would probably never leave the shop without a 4 digit bill. Enough said. On the other hand, my first convertible was a well sorted, pre owned 98 SLK230. Lots of fun for not a lot of money!

If that gearbox bolt that snapped, went right through, and you could access the top of the tapped hole, then 50/50 acetone and ATF dripped on and repeated would very likely free it off.
I've done that loads of times with steel bolts seized into alloy, and though slow, it's always worked.

Wow, the SPR schedule really is off the scale this week with Wednesday breakfast and a Friday evening upload too!! I'm not looking at the editing etc. the nuances of which are beyond me, what I'm after is facts and information which is something you deliver in large quantities every time and without fail. I did feel for you when the bolt snapped on the SLK especially as you had already said it was not an uncommon occurrence. As an R129 owner I was surprised when you started with the relay for the roof issue but I guess that just shows how little I know...I would also really like some details on the resistor hack (sorry, couldn't think of a better word) for the OM642 inlet port shut off motor as I think I might need to do similar for my 2010 ML350 which has the same engine and just needs to be kept on the road for now. Thanks again for all your videos - they are so informative and interesting. EDIT - checked the actuation of my motor with my SDS and it is working fine (at least for now).

  • @77CJJ

Love this video, your best one to date Sam. Great stuff..
What type of resistor did you put into the inlet port plug?
I’ve got the same issue with my W209 CLK which has the same OM642 engine in it as this S Class. It’s done 138,500 miles, I’ve hit the sporadic kangarooing under hard acceleration, then goes into limp mode, then have to stop , switch off and switch on again to rest it, which is a bloody pain!
Going to get the intact seals changed but don’t wanna dive into changing the inlet port motor, turbo or cooler seals as it’s just not worth the expense. Like you say, they are old smokers now! The resistor sounds like an easy fix.
    Much appreciated….

As an owner of Mercedes cars for many years and the current owner of a 2007 CLS 320 cdi family car and a 1999 R129 S320 fun car I wished I had SPR locally as I have struggled to find an independent I can trust to keep me out of the clutches of the main dealer network!

I used to enjoy servicing my own car but a few occasions of issues like snapped bolts or broken studs was enough to give in and leave it to the garage rather than being stuck on the side of the road...

Great video Sam, nice and long too! When we had our SLK the rule was if it was dry, the roof was down, airscarf on😎 the S350 was like watching a cliff hanger movie. Seized bolts the nemesis of car repairs! Some garages have invested in the induction heaters to free seized bolts, but I believe they are very expensive to buy? The video very clearly shows your practical and logical approach to repairing these cars without wasting money. Very enjoyable hours viewing.👍😎

It's a wonder the cowboy who worked on the rear brakes very recently ( springs like new ) didn't leave his stetson on the back seat. Good job you know what your doing SPR. Been watching Matt for ages, glad I came across your site. Got a new subscriber, cheers Mark.

Hi, great video again. At 48.55 into the video, you mention that the brake adj is 10 notches on this car. What would it be on a 2007 CLS 320cdi, please?

Great video. My long term daily driver is a w220 S500L and old S classes are needy but rewarding. Look after them and they look after you. Be stingy and Neglect them and they become like a rabid old dog just wanting to bite you at every opportunity .

Excellent work very enjoyable to watch you, I had a BMW with swirl flaps in the inlet, but they can come off and end up damaging the pistons etc, took mine out never noticed any difference, something to do with low down torque and emission I was told, same hand brake shoes on my C class coupe, foot pedal operated thankfully, but even all new and working, NOT great, MOT guy said they are all poor. Thanks for sharing and your time, still a cheap luxury car, better than spending £5K on a Focus lol.
