  • I went scuba diving solo in Key Largo off my sailboat and found a cool old ship wreck. I brought my speargun and tried to spearfish but lucked out..... again, lol. Went sailing around the Florida Keys, did some night sailing and gave a rundown on how I sail my liveaboard sailboat

    Awesome channel. Ive been following sailing channels for about 5 yrs now as i dream of doing it someday. You dont need all the fancy editing and music and crap that other channels have. They are all becoming the same. What i like about yours is that you are talking about all the trials and issues you are running into. All the stuff everyone else cuts out. Your channel feels more real because of it. The only issue i have is some of the shaky camera. I get motion sickness watching if its too shaky. I know gopros reduce that a bit. But otherwise, good stuff. You have a new subscriber.

    Make some hatch screens out of nosseum mesh, and if you don’t have a wind scoop for your forward hatch they’re a godsend on hot nights for funneling extra air down the hatch. Just found your channel this morning and I love what you’re doing! Keep up the good work

    Good episode... Anchoring out in the middle, especially at night leaves you vulnerable to idiots on power boats with autopilot engaged, hitting you... An anchorage is not a thoroughfare... Safer to sleep...

    you can put the dingy on the fore deck - many cruisers do it at night to avoid thievery.

    • @OffgridOceanLife
      @OffgridOceanLife  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yea I started off doing that but it was just to much work to do every day and made a mess on my boat, I’m looking into the dinghy davits though right now

    I recommend putting up the main before weighing anchor. Gives you control of the vessel.

    • @OffgridOceanLife
      @OffgridOceanLife  9 месяцев назад +1

      I get it all the way so it’s jst a pull or 2 away,I don’t see why not to go all the way though really I’ll give it a shot :)

    • @EdG8r
      @EdG8r 9 месяцев назад +1

      Getting it all the way gives you control. The sail acts like an airplane wing. I was out one day and couldn't tack (catamaran, so it's a little different). Discovered my mainsail was just a little loose. No propulsion. @@OffgridOceanLife

    Congratulations on your new boat and life. The hardest part is taking the plunge. The fact that you are learning by doing is also great stuff.
    A few pointers from a long time sailor here.
    Except for certain specific conditions go with one anchor. You have seen what a cluster two anchors can be. In poor conditions use more scope to improve the holding of the one anchor. As you mentioned, it is good to keep the spare on board in the event you loose the primary. You have a higher risk of losing both because they will get tangled and that will increase the risk of snagging on something.
    Use your halyard to keep the dinghy up out of the water when not in use. Make up a three point bridle and hoist it up against the side. It will stay clean and also deter thieves.
    Try not to buy anything for a year to really figure out what is a need vs a want. Boats can be expensive but they don’t have to be.
    Cheers.

    • @OffgridOceanLife
      @OffgridOceanLife  9 месяцев назад

      Awesome advice man I’m slowly learning everything u said,using the mast to store the dinghy and engine isn’t bad for the mast? I’ve never seen that,I’ve seen people use it to boost it onto the deck but that’s about it.

    • @northchannelsailor
      @northchannelsailor 9 месяцев назад +2

      Not an issue at all. Just think about it this way. The forces on the rig are massive under sail. It is designed for much much bigger loads. In a swell it might be an issue in securing it so it’s not a nuisance. To be clear this is only for anchoring.
      As far as towing in rough conditions the motor should be stowed and the dinghy can be towed in rougher conditions up to a point. Then it needs to be stowed as well.
      One other thing about anchoring. Making sure that you have a good solid set gives you the confidence in one anchor. It’s tricky being solo especially in wind and current. Back down hard to make sure you are holding and adjust scope according to space or conditions.
      Lastly for me I call the new generation anchors a need not a want. If you know; you know. So much less stressing about your safety and security.

      These things take time to figure out and prioritize as you go. Ground tackle needs to be a priority and bomb proof when living off of it. It’s your lifeline and last line of defence. Your home may depend on it some day when things go pear shaped.

    Maybe leave a line with a fender over the side while you're swimming. If it get's a bit dangerous you can grab the line and get yourself back onboard. Be careful. 🙂
