  • Dive boat RV Emma May, Captain Howard with crew Harry, Frank and Joe out of Barnegat Inlet New Jersey, headed to a secret shipwreck Captain Howard calls the South Wreck. It is a typical New Jersey wooden shipwreck. Low lying wooden ribs are perfect habitat for Lobster, Blackfish, Fluke and Sea Bass. Over the years, the South Wreck has been broken up by commercial fishing trawlers and is now spread over a large area. Unfortunately, remnants of fishing net are scattered about the wreckage. Known as ghost nets, they continue to catch and kill fish.
January SCUBA diving in New Jersey can be a challenge. The weather and sea conditions this day were marginal. There was fog, the air temperature was 50 F, the water was 45 F and the seas were about 5 foot. Underwater the visibility was an outstanding 20+ feet.
