"Almost Perfect" $100 Paint Job - Tractor Paint On A 1957 Chevy Convertible?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 апр 2022
- Well, time to put my money where my mouth is. My 1957 Chevy convertible is getting top coated with $70 a gallon red implement paint.
Red, the car had to be red! Well I learned red automotive paint is EXTREMELY expensive so I tried my luck with some Massey Fergusson tractor paint.
We started off pretty good, a few runs along the way didn't help but overall an adequate paint job. Wet sanding and polishing will bring this paint job from "okay" to "fantastic"!

haha the hood is the important part as you have to stare at it the whole time your driving it around.
Good to see you here
Lol
Hood, drivers door and fender. A clean windshield.
Very true, good hood and Pablo riding shotgun.
Hey HK... I've heard that line before 😎
As my Dad would’ve said,”you’ve successfully made a silk purse from a sow’s ear”. Nice job, super cool!
That’s one hell of a accomplishment on so many levels , from four door , then two door and now a convertible. Simply fantastic work Dan .
Cheers
That is for sure
IF your sanding and buffing you should do 4 coats. But I would sand it down and respray it one more time. Color sand it with 400 then respray it will look like glass. Second spray coats lay down really smooth. 2 more coats then sand and buff.....if your going that direction.
From a beat down 4 door destined for the crusher to this very presentable topless 57 two door is a huge accomplishment! My hats off to you brother and you’re going to get plenty thumbs up when she hits the road!
At the end of the day, that is what the hobby is about. Keeping cool cars on the road with what you have at your disposal
Yeah…..Dan is a man of many talents when it comes to automobiles…..
Most people would be shocked to see what he started with but we watched him do it ,👍👍
On paint where I don't have a spec sheet showing me exact recommended mixes, I have an old school method of creating a nice spraying and finishing mix. I add reducer to the mix slowly, stir it in and then lift the stir stick and allow paint to fall from it back into the pot. When the bubbles created by this come back to the surface in about two seconds, it's good to go.
That's a how a old school painter taught me mixing the paint correctly for a good flow. One thin coat, let it sit for 10 minutes until it's tacky, then a second coat with precision making it flow to a mirror shine. Then wait 10-15 minutes and third last coat laid down same as second, heavy taking notice what distance you holding the gun, check every panel before going to next one for any dry spots. Painted a lot of cars, 18 wheeler's, show cars during the years using this method. Water in the line or dirty paint gun has only created a few problem, but never the mixing method.
It is all about flow. Wait on the tack coat (actually touch a tapped part to make sure it is tacky) then by coat three you can add more reducer and open the material control a little, move a little faster to flow out the paint. Add 50% overlap and that is the best way to get between orange peel and runs. Nice work.
Yep, a painter friend of mine called the final top coat a HOT COAT. Mostly reducer with a little color in it. You have to be careful not to put it on too thick because it literally will sag the paint and cause runs. But a hot coat makes the previous coats smooth out and flow. Brings out a high gloss in enamel paint. Practice on an old door or hood to get the technique down.
Yall have made me realize theres a whole class of painting i have yet to be introduced to
Turn your fan wider. And it will atomize the paint better and lay down better. Don’t over reduce the paint it will make the shine dull after a few days
Personally since he had the orange peel I would have sanded it and retacked it after each coat then added the hot coat on top.. Then after the clear coat is added you ca mirror shine it on the clear
Seat upholstery?
You remind me of our good OLD high school days. ❤
The tractor paint did a lot better than I expected. I may try that myself next time I need a budget paint job.
I'm so happy to see a Dan car with a full paint job there is a tear in my eye😢. Looks good!
Ya, seems crazy. But I'll take it.
Weather is not cooperating down here either. Excellent job Dan, and like to title of the game show....the price is right!
From where that car was at you 1st started working on it to where's at now there's no comparison you've done the hell of a job with that car. The only person you have to impress is you. The car looks great!!
There is a point where the paint looks perfectly smooth and wet. That is the sweet spot. Ant more it will run, any less it will orange peel. Looks great overall.
The Tractor paint laid like a prom date ! , lookin mighty fine in my eyes Dan . excellent !!!
That turned out really nice! Can't wait to see it with all the trim on!
DUDE. It's refreshing to see someone just get in there and give it a shot. Watching the experts is sometimes confusing and intimidating, looking over your shoulder while you attack with your "it's just frikken paint" makes we feel like giving it a shot. I got this cool old Dune Buggy body that I was going to take to Maaco but hell, I can do this
You can do it man, go for it 👍
With the tractor paint you are not out much if you need to redo.
Love it Dan!!!! Great job! You know if you don't point out the little stuff 99% will never see it . It's not a show car it's a GO CAR!!! Absolutely love it
Scott at Cold War Motors can do some serious painting amoung other cool stuff! He did some amazing work to the Boogie Van paint job and anything he paints! Enjoy watching your videos and Cold War Motors
Looks good Dan!, I don't really know why you never fixed that RR quarter dent, but like you said the trim will hide it..haha.
Looks really good Dan. I'm going to do that to my old Pontiac. Red with black top. I'm looking for a good 20 footer that I can cruise in. Can't wait to see it with the trim.
Man, Both the Heavens and Dan have transcended. Can you believe he actually painted one? Looks great! Good times ahead!
Dan looks good, you happy with it is all that counts ...
Greetings from the USA🇺🇸. Love your channel and Coldwarmotors. Both are very informative and entertaining.
Looks nice. After seeing some color on it I’d rethink that plaid seat
Looks like a 1957 Chevrolet convertible to me! A neat trick to get rid of those runs is to take a good glaze auto body or finish putty thin coat over the runs let dry good then da the glaze putty with 800. grit paper un till the putty is gone and so will the runs. Old painters trick. I have done this for years and try it, form advice of a 75 year old watcher and 40 year painter
Looks fantastic. Brings back memories of me at 16 and second car I bought a 62 Tbird convertible we fixed up and painted with IH red paint in a small lean to and it turned out fantastic Keep the Videos coming us old folks remember them day's 👍
Next video you should post before and after pictures. Nobody would believe it. Well done Dan! I hope this encourages you to paint more cars in the future.
dude ! cruisin around this summer under the sun and stars, maybe even a drivein!!
Nice work brother!!!
Never mind the runs/curtains, they can be sanded away. Looks good 👍
Nice work Dan Thanks for sharing
It's pretty cool watching you get in to this painting with a regular spay gun instead of a rattle can. You seem sincerely excited. Don't get me wrong, I love the Rat Rod look but it's good to see something painted every now and then. Nice work brother!
Silicone near any auto paint is a big NO, at some point you'll find that lesson out. A sealer would definitely help with all the cut thru areas, sand scratch swelling and possible lifting on those edges, especially due to the other paint applied under the primer. Hope it turns out half way decent.
sweet golden goodness in one place keep up the good work love y'all shows
As long as they don't steal it while you are grabbing that "bag of chips" , you'll be ok ! Considering what you started with , that looks great ! A little polish after hardening & the trim , & 'Pow" ! Nice job . I could see a really nice reflection in the side of the car you were standing next to when you finished to vid .
Dude get a viscosity meter, a very cheap and it helps you get the paint at the proper reduced state. Very helpful when temperature changes
You should be pleased....thats a really nice paintjob Dan
Looks great Dan!
Wow. Red. With the chrome on it will stand out nicely
Looks like your gonna be just in time for summer on this one…….good shit!!!
Dam that car is sharp Dan you did one hall of a job just think $100 dallor paint job it is a mazzin with wat you started with and now wat you have you have a daily that people would love to drive you did a great job Dan keep up the great content thank you 👍
it looks a hell of alot better than when you started on it for sure i think its awesome
What I like about this is you can paint the barn the same color and when you park the car inside it disappears in the background Now if you pinstripe the car you will have a huge job pin striping the barn. Of coarse if you painted flames on the car, it will make putting flames on the barn alot easier, just light a match.
After seeing water drops appearing outta nowhere, I discovered a little sweat was dripping out from the gloves.
Now I tightly wrap tape around the wrists to contain the sweat prior to spraying.
Nice job btw 👍
Danni is going to love those "pink" highlites in those golden locks! 😉
Awesome job. That color rocks that car.
57’ Chevy…Still the most beautiful car ever made!!! And a convertible at that!! This one is gonna look pretty nice! If I’m not mistaken, the original red that Chevy used was “Matador Red”. The red you’re using looks pretty close! I used to have one but had to sell it. 😢 I hope to have another one some day before I die! 🤷🏻♂️🙏🏻. Cool video!
I've painted for 35 years in a shop like yours with a fan and wet the floor but wet sand is the very best block it out 2000 gritt lots of water and put a drop of dish soap in the water bucket It cleens the shit out of the sandpaper I love the 57 my new Ryde now is my 57 pontiac Laurentian
Dan - Awesome Job! This will be so fun to run this 57 around town this summer and turn heads! Many of us use your efforts to fulfill
our auto dreams through your efforts.
BIG Thumbs Up,,,Great Video !!
Wooooo that is one reddddd. 57 man. Getter done man👍
That paint actually looks pretty decent for what it is, good job. But Man... Those seats need to be black ;)
Dan thanks so much for making me feel like Chip foose
Driver quality Dan. You got it. No Perfect trailer queen that one doesn't want to drive for fear of dust on thousands of dollar parts. This is a driver in which one can drive and enjoy. If you have a run, so be it. Let the good times roll and many approvals at your accomplishment.
That's gonna be a cool looking cruiser this summer and you built it from nothing. Great job Dan, I knew you could do a paint job 👍👍
That paint will cure up pretty good with hardener. It still cures slower than auto enamel but will be pretty durable and color sand out just fine. I painted the transom - sea well area of my 40 year old lake boat nearly ten years ago and it still looks new, even resistant to fuel spills! Cheap can still be good!
57 Chevy looks great man! It turned out very nice and I like the color alot. Later man ✌
Dan the floor pan man happy to see you paint a car looks good keep it up.
Try this dan, waite about 10+ days, wet sand it with 800 and rubber pad to get all orange peel flat and get all the runs flat as well, then wash the car and rinse it over & over. Then on a better, much warmer day ( 65+ degrees ) in 2+ weeks or so, mix up another batch of the same red paint with more hardener and reduce it as much as you did for the second coat that you though was to thin. Also it's a good idea to let the fully mixed & reduced paint sit for about 20 minuets to let everything melt tougher as a unit before putting finished product in the gun. Re prep the car & shop as before, blow the car out real good again and wet the floor, put a ground chain on, & wipe car with tack rag. Then put 2 more coats of red on, one medium coat and one lite coat with reduced paint. Don't be afraid to use even more hardener.
What you should always be doing is trying to keep reducing the paint MORE with each coat. "Never add " extra paint to make it thicker or it will go flat on you every time. If you feel you need the paint just a little thicker, add MORE hardener, never more paint.
It would seem you are starting to listen to my advice, ( it's about time as I am a tool to be used) Your doing good, just keep asking questions and I will give you the correct answers .
You the man wish I had your ambition amazing what you get done in that shop!!
We always opened the trunk, hood and doors and painted the jams the day before. Then close them up and giver a good spray like you did the next day.
Excellent job and any flaws ain’t nothin a Blind Man on a Fast Motorcycle would ever notice lol and I always refer to mine as my 55 mph paint jobs looks great truckin down the road 👌
That looks like a respectable 10 footer. Great job.
Amazing craftsmanship!👍👍
Dan, from where I'm sitting, your paint job looks fine....the more you paint, the more you learn, I have a buddy that has been doing garage paint jobs for years....his paint jobs look much better than some booth paint jobs....be safe!!! God Bless!!!!
Hey Dan
It sure looks to me.
Really hope to see her driving around ThePeg this summer.
i am very impressed, enjoy you attitude and abilities, i am inspired
Great job Dan always enjoy your videos
Looking good Dan can’t wait to see more results. Keep up the good work.
Just got to say .I like how you try to fix what needs to be fixed. I work with what I have that surrounds me all the time and try to make it look decent for me.
Dan it's fine, it's RED . Enjoy it and drive it!
Paint has come a long way since this car was new. I think it looks pretty good and is accurate for the time. I’m sure it will look great when you have a chance to wet sand it.
Heck yeah Bud, that thing is looking great. U come a long way man and that red is like icing on cake ,niccccee.
Prep is everything, looks like an earl shrieb job scotch brite and spray lol
Dan, your the MAN, bud !! No guts, no Glory.... Keep up the Great work !!
Not going to lie that’s bad ass can’t wait to see it with all the trim going down the road
Looks great from here. Next one you paint, might try starting at the panel farthest away from exhaust fan, so your overspray doesn't drag across the fresh paint, how this one was set up, trunk, rite 1/4, rite door, left 1/4, left door, rite side hood, rite fender, left hood and finish with left fender at exhaust fan. My 2 cents.
great job. enjoy it every day, YOU did it ,better than just paying someone else ,BECAUSE YOU DID IT if you just paid to have it done your enjoyment would end 24 hours later now as long as you own the car you will enjoy it, ,,and believe me you will remember that joy for the rest of your life... I painted a 68 Mustang Fastback ( I was 21 ) the same way 74 now and watching your video makes me happy again.....
I love watching your videos!
Don't forget the lower rockers that's an easy one to forget and under the Fender Wells Sucks when you're paints all done and you go looking at it and you go to touch that up and it shoots over spray all over your shiny paint
Not bad for the first time painting a car. Cool car 😊
Good job Dan the man
I think it looks great Dan. It's all red, shiny, and it cost about as much as a tank of gas. That's a win. Plus, this is a car you can drive, enjoy, and not worry too much about. All the fun of a 57 Chevy convertible without stressing over it's value.
This car build has been a journey that I feel thankful I got to see
Thanks for the videos! I'm getting ready to paint my 93 F150! Gloss Black with Halographic black glitter in the clearcoat!
good job i love a poor boy paint job most is about the 10 feet drive by I painted my 62 nova gasser in the driveway and wet sanding a single stage paint job and buff to a wonderful body shop look keep your money in your pocket I love it the trailer queen cars are out of hand now adays these cars were right with single stage paint jobs your the man .
Right on Dan the Man! That ol red Chevy is going to look great with all that shiny chrome on it. Great job!😎💯
Love the mention of Scott from Cold War Motors. I love his channel as well (being a fellow Albertan hasn’t influenced my opinions). I just enjoy Canadian humour and modesty.
🇨🇦🤘🤓🤘🇨🇦
One of my favorite things to do.. paint after all else is done.. finishing touch.. Looks great.
Looks great Dan it’s definitely will be a Head turner
I watched this in 1080 p on my 740p 40" TV. The color looks tomato red. I rewatched it on my 5g phone and it looks more red. 2 thumbs up.
You won't have any trouble finding your car in a parking lot. Love the color and look forward to seeing it with the trim.
After a full day of coaster riding at Cedar Point, I found myself trying to unlock my Toyota Tercel. No luck. Then my Daughter notices that it dosen't have my bumper sticker on it. Good thing she saw it, I was getting ready to jimmy the door open.
Looking forward to seeing this one done with all trim etc. What a great transformation. I usually don’t like red but this one I like 👍
Yep..awesome..you did great...you had fun..how else are you gonna learn..practice ..practice..practice..I'm happy with that too
Looking good movie quality I love watching every episode can't wait for more Dan o u r living the dream way cool 😎
There's a lot to be said about this job. I like it because it is old school, this us what car guys did back in the day: tear down a car and paint it in their driveway, or barn, or garage (if you had one), pull engine under shade tree, rebuild it under the same tree because it was too heavy to move elsewhere. The restoration companies are for those who have money but no skills. This is your car, and after all, a cheap trophy given to those high priced restorations only collect dust. Hope you enjoy this project when cruising to the Quik-Stop. I applaud your efforts to keep a 57 on the road.
Lookin good Dan cheap great look way to go 👍👍
Well I think Your gal is going to love it. And your proud of your job. That’s all that matters. Thank you for sharing
I love it it looks great be proud to have you for myself somebody else don't like it and ask him where his is

No way I could live with that 1/4 panel but looks good for what it is
