$69 Clear Coat Instantly Fixes A BAD paint Job - 1957 Chevy Rag Top

  • In the last few videos I have been messing around with cheap implement paint on my 1957 Chevy convertible. Any at home paint job will have its fair share of problems, dirt in the paint, poor lighting, fighting the weather ect.
    My original plan was to wet sand and buff the single stage paint to a nice shine. Well that was just going to be to much work! Instead I sanded down the entire car in 800 grit, wiped it down, borrowed a fancy paint gun from my old man and layed down a cheap coat of clear.
    69 dollar 2 stage clear was the best option for me in this situation. It saved me a pile of time and I ended up with a perfect finish.
    Now roast me in the comments about top coating single stage paint with clear coat. So far it hasn't peeled off in sheets, so I'm calling it a win!

    Been a bodynan/painter for 30 years and experimented with all sorts of cobble togeather paint setups. I find a single stage with a clear was something we done many times. No troubles. Think the car looks deadly for a $200 paint job. Well done. One think I can say is your not afraid to try it and fool it up. It's the best way to learn. Well done

      I spray at the pressure that gives me the best finish surface. I don't care if I have overspray if the paint lays flat. U have to use what's available to you, even if it's a $20 Harbor freight paint gun and $100 materials. I've used cheap guns and material my hole life. I even use the little nozzle, I think it's a 1.2 tip for base and clear. Some time you have to crank up the pressure to get the material out. I can meet or beat most people's work with sub par tools and materials.

  • @SweatyFatGuy
    @SweatyFatGuy 2 года назад +41

    Dan for future reference, when you are getting that much fog while spraying, you have the air pressure to the gun too high. The HVLP is supposed to minimize the overspray like that, when I started shooting with the lowest possible pressure at the gun I started getting better paint jobs and using a hell of a lot less material to do it. More ends upon the car than in the air.
    I need a Murr to hold a light for me, I can't see a damn thing when I am shootin paint, mostly because I like medium to dark colors. That is looking great Dan, and as long as the single stage flashed enough, and you color sanded it, the clear should stick no problem.

    • @tiporari
      @tiporari 2 года назад +3

      Spot on. Way too much pressure at the nozzle. Turn the air down and the paint up. Runs are annoying, but correctable. Dry clear that doesn't flow and level out... That requires a repaint.

    • @SweatyFatGuy
      @SweatyFatGuy 2 года назад +4

      @@tiporari keeping it moving, not laying down thick coats, having the material thinned out just enough that it doesn't run or sag but flows easily is the hard part. Once you figure it out though, you can repeat it often. The temp makes a big difference in how well it covers, flows and resists runs and sags.
      I am still figuring it out, and I try to keep as much overspray out of the air as I possibly can, other than coverage and finish, limiting the overspray is my big concern. I want it on the car, not floating around my shop coating everything.
      I have a Devilbiss gun with a regulator, I run 40psi to the gun and then turn the gauge on the gun down to where it doesn't make lots of overspray. Its one of the best investments I ever made, I think it was around $350 or $400. That clear really messes me up when it gets on my skin or I inhale a bit of it.. so I can really anal about it.

    Ive painted tractors for 9 years now. Ive used everything from Tractor Supply Magic paint to Manufacture paint. Ive done LOTS of sanding and respraying. It is true about the uv protection. Even using more hardner than called for it will fade over few years time. Spend the $ buy good quality paint etc and save yourself the time and stress!!! It looks better, lays down like a dream saving countless priceless time and will last a lifetime and allow you to save on the lifetime of your mental and physical health. I use Shopline paint products by PPG. Once you go two stage you wont go back! When its weather permitting I actually prefer to paint outside, compared to in the shop. Alot less trash in the paint, and visibility is unbeatable. I use a Eastwood Concourse 1& 2 gun and love both. Paint society is a great channel to learn from.

    Speaking as a painter, a good way to try and control dry spots and runs is to move faster across the panel and overlapping your strokes more. When moving slowly you tend to dip in too close and pull back too far away when compensating for muscle fatigue. Also a good way to tell when you’re ready for the next coat of clear is to touch the masking paper next to the panel with your fingertip. If it’s tacky but doesn’t pull strings of clear it’s ready. Coats too close together can cause runs or solvent pops because the first coat hasn’t flashed it’s solvents out enough.

    Dang!! Awesome daily driver! I'm proud of you on your work painting this car! Great painting video! Not everybody has a red 57 Chevy, you deserve a pat on the back!!! Talk about El cheapo tractor paint came out looking like a million bucks!!!😎👍

    What a painting hack job! It turned out great! Exactly what I need, because I'm doing my 57 Bel Air and 67 Camaro the same way. What people don't get is these old cars have lots of bumps and repairs that always need fixing. These will be family heirlooms we actually drive. If you do a $5,000 paint job it's eventually going to get nicked or repaired. I'd rather have a 'good enough' job I can sand and repaint when needed.

    I sprayed single stage, mid coat and three clear coat layers. Paint is over 10 years old and still gets complements all the time. Zero issues.

    Dan the man...watching your vid reminds me of the troubles I had when I was learning....and after all the years have gone by with (mostly) successful paint jobs I've now came to the conclusion that we humans have certain things we are good at and also have things we are not so good at... mostly due to impatience and lack of research and practice. In other words some people are "naturals" and the rest of us have to work harder and be determined to get it right...or make a decision to let someone else (a natural) do the things we have a hard time with. If your heart's not into it, it probably won't turn out so good or it will take twice as long to do something. Plus the thing I 've noticed over the years is that it is important who we get advice from and to not take-on too many advisers. Choose someone who has been successful and stick with them...and throw away your pride and LISTEN. "Too many captains means the ship will probably sink" Yes there are a lot of tips here in your comments (including mine) but too many will only cause confusion...as you already know. My hat's off to you for persevering.
    Oh, if you used a catalyst with the tractor paint I think most catalyst has UV protection in it...I was told it does by an auto paint store (Wesco) where I got it...but I don't know if all catalyst has UV protection in it.
    The clearcoat you put on looks great!

    Using many brands of hardware store enamel, I can absolutely say that colors are vibrant for a year and then quickly dull out when left outside.

    Interesting, and it worked quite well. But now you have cleared your entire shop including Merv's head 😆 I think that there may actually be a reason for extraction fans. Can't argue with the results of your clear coating, looking good...sanity not withstanding.
